00:00Welcome to WatchMojo and today we're looking at the horror films you may have seen once
00:07but wouldn't dare to play back again.
00:0910.
00:12The Substance
00:22This body horror film caught both audiences and critics by surprise, launching an unexpected
00:27run through the awards circuit.
00:28At its core, the substance portrays how women in Hollywood are pushed aside in favor of
00:32younger faces, but the approach to its subject matter isn't exactly clean or comfortable.
00:51Most of the film features eye-popping, graphic, and overall grotesque visuals that will make
00:55you squirm in your seat.
00:57The unfiltered approach is a deliberate choice, forcing viewers to explore themes of vanity
01:01and desperation in all their visceral ways.
01:04And while we can appreciate its artistic merits, it's the farthest thing from a pleasant experience.
01:08I can't stop.
01:09She just...
01:10I...
01:11I...
01:12The balance just needs to be respected.
01:15So respected.
01:169.
01:17Mother
01:18More than a few viewers were left scratching their heads by this allegorical mind-bender.
01:30You didn't need to do all of this.
01:32I wanted to.
01:33You've been working so hard.
01:34Yeah, right.
01:35Mother is a symbolic interpretation of the world.
01:39Jennifer Lawrence represents Mother Earth as humanity's destructive nature ravages her existence.
01:44Although the film's ambitious intent is admirable, its execution is a lot more subjective.
01:49Most of the film unfolds through psychological trauma and disturbing imagery, leaving it up
02:04to audiences to figure out the film's message on their own.
02:07As avant-garde as it gets, Mother is more of an acquired taste than a crowd-pleaser.
02:11No!
02:12No!
02:13That's not for you!
02:14He said to share.
02:15But it's not yours!
02:17They're hungry and thirsty.
02:19Even those who do connect with its thematic undertones might find the constant metaphors
02:24and outlandish content too much to take.
02:278.
02:28Henry
02:29Portrait of a Serial Killer
02:30Did you really kill your mama?
02:32What?
02:33Did you really kill your mama?
02:36I guess I did.
02:39How did it happen?
02:42Most serial killer films glorify the characters to unrealistic extreme.
02:46This one goes the opposite direction, painting its titular character as inherently sick and
02:51demented.
02:52There's nothing stylish or slick here.
02:53It's just a couple of evil guys doing evil things, so sitting through their activities
02:57is as uncomfortable as you'd imagine.
02:59I'd still like to kill him though.
03:01I bet you would.
03:02I'd like to kill somebody.
03:04Say that again.
03:07I'd like to kill somebody.
03:09Must mean you go for a ride, Otis.
03:11Apart from indulging in their twisted desires, Henry and his accomplice Otis actively corrupt
03:16one another in the process.
03:18Far from humanizing either of them, the film exposes the pair for the vile men they are.
03:23The idea behind it is grim and effective, but we'd rather just leave Henry and Otis
03:27alone and never speak of them again.
03:29Guns are easy to get.
03:31I can make a phone call and get a gun.
03:34Anybody can get a gun on Otis.
03:35What do you got in mind, Henry?
03:37What do you think?
03:387.
03:39Tusk
03:40By now, it's clear that whenever Justin Long is in a horror movie, you can expect bad things
03:45to happen to him.
03:57Tusk put this character through one of the worst forms of torture ever conceived.
04:00After falling prey to a deranged man obsessed with a walrus named Tusk, he finds himself
04:04being brainwashed into the creature against his will.
04:07Oh, I've missed you, Mr. Tusk.
04:09How I've missed our merry times together on Pandora.
04:16The film depicts his horrifying transformation in painful detail, as he goes from man to walrus
04:22while clinging to any form of humanity he still can.
04:25Though traces of dark humor provide some moments of levity, Tusk is an unsettling experience
04:29about the maniacal ways a person's inner darkness can manifest.
04:33Are you really mourning your loss of humanity?
04:36I don't understand.
04:39Who in the hell would want to be human?
04:426.
04:43Midsommar
04:44Scenic Swedish landscapes, friendly locals, and an escape from city life.
04:48Sounds like the perfect getaway, doesn't it?
04:50Not when you're in an airy Ashter movie, it's not.
04:53Do you think I don't know what you're doing?
04:56It's actually kind of outrageously unsubtle, the fact that you're being this bald about
05:02it.
05:03I'm honestly kind of impressed.
05:05Midsommar turns daylight into a walking night, throwing its characters into a terrifying ritual
05:09with no escape.
05:10Every form of beautiful imagery is weaponized to create a constant sense of paranoia.
05:15Of course, we reach truly disgusting territory by the end.
05:30Somehow both nauseating and memorizing, the climactic ritual has a hypnotic quality you can't tear
05:35your eyes away from.
05:36As Horga takes, so Horga also gives.
05:40Thus, for every new blood sacrificed, we will dedicate one of our own.
05:48By the end, you'll rethink that trip to Europe and probably settle for a day at Disneyland
05:53instead.
05:54Number 5.
05:55The Human Centipede 2.
05:56Full Sequels.
05:57Anyone who saw the first film wondered who this was even made for.
06:01I was really drawn to the film because of the medical aspect of it.
06:04If you were a surgeon, you could actually perform that surgery.
06:08It's just so scary.
06:09Turns out, it was the main character of the sequel who decides to recreate it himself,
06:14front to back, as it were.
06:15Ditching any attempt at thoughtful commentary or subtext, The Human Centipede 2 is a body
06:20whore for the sake of it, consisting completely of revolting, heinous, and cringeworthy material.
06:24You don't need to see beyond the title to know where this is headed.
06:33But if you do, you'll have to sit through 90 minutes of content that is designed to make
06:37you gag.
06:38Forget re-watching.
06:39It's impressive if you can even get through the whole thing the first time around.
06:43I'm sorry.
06:44I'm going to have to go.
06:45There's nothing to worry about.
06:47I'm sure it's just a passing phase.
06:50Number 4.
06:51A Serbian Film.
06:52Truth be told, you don't need to watch this a second time.
07:04Not when every frame will be seared into your mind.
07:07A Serbian film presents itself as an allegorical take on control and exploitation.
07:11But you'll mostly remember it for scarring you for life.
07:14It's brutal, relentless.
07:15And so, over the top, you'll start to wonder if there's supposed to be a story here in
07:19the first place.
07:32Framed around a struggling actor lured into filming an unlawful kill tape, what little plot
07:36it has runs thin quickly.
07:37Instead of thinking about a second viewing, you'll more than likely be mourning the
07:41person you were before you ever watched this film.
07:44You're the only one.
07:45You don't want to die.
07:46You don't want to die.
07:47You don't want to die.
07:48You don't want to die.
07:49You don't want to die.
07:50You don't want to die.
07:53Number 3.
07:54Cannibal Holocaust.
07:55While found footage became mainstream through films like The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal
07:59Activity, Cannibal Holocaust is one of the first entries in this genre.
08:02Things like this happen all the time in the jungle.
08:04It's survival of the fittest.
08:05Still among the most controversial films ever made, it was met with outrage upon its release.
08:10The story follows a film crew exploiting Amazonian tribes, only to suffer a terrifying
08:15retribution after their staged and sensationalized content is exposed.
08:18If you think the violence comes across as intensely raw and real, that's because some of it actually
08:33is.
08:34The film was banned and condemned for its cold disregard for animal safety, prioritizing shock
08:38value over innovation.
08:39Cannibal Holocaust is more of a film you try to forget than one you want to remember.
08:43Number 2.
08:56Martyrs.
09:06Reaching a higher state of understanding takes many forms.
09:09In its device of psychological horror, it comes through pain and suffering.
09:12The film follows a traumatized woman and her friend's revenge on her former captors, uncovering
09:17far more sinister plans in the process.
09:31While that sounds intriguing on the surface, most of the movie feels like an endless torture
09:35Latin montage.
09:36After what feels like the 60th blood-soaked frame, there's no real emotional payoff.
09:41Martyrs remains highly polarizing, with some appreciating its profound themes while others
09:45are put off by all the horror on display.
09:47Either way, it's hard to see many people lining up for another round.
09:50Another round.
09:51Another round.
09:57I swear to you.
09:58I swear to you.
09:59I swear to you.
10:00I swear to you that she can't see what there is around you.

10:17Salo or The 120 Days of Sodom
10:21While most of the films we've mentioned use pain to serve their narrative, in Salo,
10:26it's the whole story.
10:27Corrupt elites capture 18 young people just to inflict some truly terrible torment.
10:31Now it's time to take a proper look at them, don't you think?
10:35Take your clothes off.
10:36As hard as it might be to believe, that's basically the whole story.
10:40Director Pierre Paolo Pasolini, who, in a twist of tragic irony, was murdered just weeks
10:45before the film's release, uses vicious brutality to critique the threat of unchecked power.
10:50The four friends have the right to interrupt at any moment and as often as they wish.
10:56The purpose of these stories is to inflame the imagination and any form of lust will be permitted.
11:03Despite generally positive reviews for its gritty and unflinching depiction of human cruelty,
11:07Salo is far from most people's rewatch lists.
11:10Although banned and censored in multiple countries,
11:13it ultimately influenced similarly transgressive films for decades to come.
11:17Is there a scary movie that makes your skin crawl?
