Thousands rally in Sandakan, Tawau demanding justice for Zara

Thousands of people had gathered in Sandakan and Tawau on Friday (Aug 8) evening to demand for justice for Zara Qairina Mahathir, a 13-year-old Form One student.   The peaceful gatherings were organised to show solidarity and sympathy for Zara Qairina and her family. 00:00Thousands had gathered in Sandakan and Tawau on Friday evening, demanding justice for 13-year-old Form 1 student Zahra Kairina Mahathir.

00:11In Sandakan, the rally at Harbor Square drew crowds as early as 6 p.m.

00:16Participants carried banners, read poems, and offered prayers for Zahra Kairina,

00:21while several activists and local people's representatives addressed the gathering.

00:25Chairman of Masjid Wasatya Lupak Meluas, Muhammad Jarif Aizat Samsuddin,

00:32said the gathering was meant to express solidarity and sympathy for Zahra Kairina.

01:12Meanwhile, in Tawau, the rally at the Chester Knight Market roundabout also saw people dressed in black as a show of solidarity.

01:22Earlier on Friday, the Attorney General's chambers announced that Zahra Kairina's grave would be exhumed for a second post-mortem.

01:30The AGC also said that it had returned the preliminary investigation report to the police,

01:35along with further instructions to proceed with the exhumation and ensure that all aspects of the probe are carried out thoroughly.

01:43Zahra Kairina was pronounced dead at a hospital in Sabah on July 17,

01:49a day after she reportedly fell from the third floor of her school dormitory.

01:54Her family believed that her death was linked to bullying.
