Uganda’s refugee children face education crisis amid soaring arrivals and funding shortfall

Since January 2025, nearly 600 people—many fleeing conflicts in Sudan, South Sudan, and the DRC—have entered Uganda each day. Among them are thousands of children, many unaccompanied, who dream of continuing their education despite the overwhelming challenges.

00:01Uganda, already Africa's largest refugee-hosted nation, is on the brink of a humanitarian emergency
00:07as the number of refugees nears 2 million.
00:11With over half of them children, education is among the hardest hit sectors.
00:17The class is too full to the extent you, the teachers, you cannot really supervise the learners very well.
00:24Because as a teacher you are teaching, you need to move between the children to check whether they are very attentive.
00:31But this one has not been easy because of the congestion in the class.
00:34And when it comes time for exam, all of them come and you find they sit even outside on the verandas to write their exams.
00:44So congestion in class is really an issue.
00:48Volunteer teacher Abdillah, himself is a refugee from Sudan, expressed concern for the youngest arrivals.
00:54As emergency funds run dry by September, the agency is calling for immediate action to protect the most vulnerable.
01:01I came without families. They have no money, as they say. They have no relatives with them. They are still very young.
