00:00:00Oh, the land of the free, and the home of the brave.
00:00:17Festivities wrapping up.
00:00:26The crowd is electric, and we'll be back to get it going right after this.
00:00:42And welcome into the ballpark.
00:00:44Happy to have you with us.
00:00:45We've got the American League Championship Series on the show.
00:00:50It's the Oakland Athletics taking on the New York Yankees.
00:00:58With Chris Singleton, I'm John Chomby.
00:01:00We're looking forward to what's sure to be a dramatic Game 3, Chris.
00:01:05And, Boog, this is as close to an elimination game as you can get without it actually being one.
00:01:10Going down 3-0 with more or less just in this thing.
00:01:13So, this game's going to tell us whether we're going to have a real series in store for us or if we're just going to be packing our bags and going home.
00:01:20A lot of people feel these teams are more evenly matched than the first two games would indicate.
00:01:24So, we'll see if we get a bounce back performance in this one.
00:01:27All right.
00:01:27We'll be back to get this one started after this.
00:01:30First pitch moments away.
00:01:42Today's starting pitcher, Ron Guidry.
00:01:45Chris, what should we keep an eye on here with him?
00:01:47Very dominant his last time out.
00:01:49Picked up the win.
00:01:50Only allowed one run.
00:01:52These guys would love to see him back on his game in this one.
00:01:55Ready for baseball here in New York.
00:01:57Striding to the plate now for Ole.
00:02:01And a pitch.
00:02:04That one's in there.
00:02:06So, we're off and running in game three.
00:02:16And he deals.
00:02:19In there at the knees for a strike.
00:02:21All these guys were shut out in the previous game.
00:02:24And I'm really interested to see what did they talk about in that hitters meeting that's going to translate into the game and help them be able to get on the scoreboard.
00:02:32Swing and a miss.
00:02:44Struck him out.
00:02:46And that's the first out.
00:02:47Tell you what.
00:02:48Those are the types of guys pitchers really like to punch out when they're on the mound.
00:02:51Because if they get on, just the distraction that they create with all that speed over on the base pass, it can take away your focus from the next hitter.
00:03:01And that's the last thing you want to do is serve up a pitch that a guy hits over the fence.
00:03:05And it's a multi-run home run.
00:03:07And first off ring is fouled off.
00:03:16One down, base is empty.
00:03:19And a foul ball.
00:03:22Looked like you got a little excited on that fastball.
00:03:24Got to think to yourself, you want to stay up the middle.
00:03:27That way, if you're a little bit early, you hit it out of the ballpark, you're a little late.
00:03:30Opposite field knock.
00:03:32Next off ring down low and in the dirt.
00:03:34No score just getting started, top of the first.
00:03:41That hits the dirt.
00:03:42It's two and two.
00:03:48Ground ball to the right side.
00:03:51The flip to the pitcher covering.
00:03:53Quick start here this evening.
00:03:55Two out, top of the first.
00:03:57Head time now to check out the A's lineup.
00:03:59Chris, this is a lineup offensively that could be really good for years to come.
00:04:04They're deep, first and foremost.
00:04:06But the way that they can manipulate their personnel for matchups and everything else,
00:04:11it's very intelligent, the way that they use their team.
00:04:15And I think it creates a little bit of uncertainty for opposing teams,
00:04:20especially in a big game, big series.
00:04:21Jimmy Foxx, in the box here, lets that one go for a ball.
00:04:32The lefty, the 1-0.
00:04:36That's down and in.
00:04:37And now 2-1.
00:04:45That one pushed foul.
00:04:55In the air, right side.
00:05:10Mack on the run towards the line.
00:05:12No trouble here.
00:05:13Puts it away for the out.
00:05:15And that is that.
00:05:17A's go quickly and quietly there.
00:05:19And now the Yankees will see what they can do.
00:05:21No score.
00:05:22It's Major League Baseball on the show.
00:05:24We go to the bottom of the first.
00:05:33On the hill and coming off a great start.
00:05:35Eddie Plank.
00:05:37A really doubting for him last time.
00:05:38Scattered two runs.
00:05:40Was attacking hitters.
00:05:41Getting ahead in the count.
00:05:42Great performance.
00:05:44And stepping in for the Yankees, Phil Random.
00:05:47We talk about guys with good speed.
00:05:49And definitely he has it.
00:05:51But pushing the offensive side for just a second, Chris.
00:05:55It's the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most.
00:05:59But 1-0.
00:06:06And that's outside.
00:06:07But he gets to balls that get by most people at that position.
00:06:12Just really impressive because there's certain times the ball comes off the bat.
00:06:16Automatically that team that hit it thinks that they've got a base hit.
00:06:19Or they may have extra bases.
00:06:21And he just takes it away.
00:06:23Tosses to first.
00:06:24And a quick out number one.
00:06:26Okay, let's check out the lineup.
00:06:28And the key to victory for them here, get their starters some run support early.
00:06:31If they can get in that run support early, it's likely the other team folds because they know how dominant he can be once he gets settled in.
00:06:41So put pressure on that other team right away.
00:06:44Jump out to a lead early and a few runs is going to feel like 30.
00:06:48Joe DiMaggio watches that one for a strike.
00:06:51Standing in here with one down.
00:06:53Next one misses.
00:07:04And a count even one and one.
00:07:06And what makes him even quicker is the fact that he's so dialed in on the pitch as it's moving through the hitting zone.
00:07:11He can see how that hitter's lined up, what he's trying to do, and where that pitch is going to end up.
00:07:16Which gives him that really quick first step.
00:07:18And that's why he makes so many great plays.
00:07:20The next offering misses.
00:07:23Three and one.
00:07:36Three and one.
00:07:37And he couldn't come up with it.
00:07:39Well, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot.
00:07:42Hitter didn't offer at it.
00:07:44Now he has somebody to worry about over at first.
00:07:47Stepping in, the long ball threat, Babe Ruth.
00:07:50Swings through that one.
00:07:52Oh, and one.
00:08:05Next offering is down low.
00:08:12DiMaggio at first, one gone.
00:08:14Next pitch misses, and it's two and one.
00:08:28Oh, now this is blasted.
00:08:30Way back there.
00:08:31On its way.
00:08:32Gone.
00:08:37A two-run homer, and they add a pair.
00:08:40It's two-nothing.
00:09:01Looks like this guy was looking out over the plate.
00:09:03But he was ready to turn on the inside fastball.
00:09:07So direct to the pitch.
00:09:09Absolutely blasted out of this ballpark.
00:09:17Lou Gehrig stepping in now for the Yankees.
00:09:20Good contact guy.
00:09:21Good defender.
00:09:24First pitch.
00:09:25Just misses.
00:09:25And Gary can clean up for that famed murderer's row lineup as the Yankees were rolling off
00:09:32one World Series title after another.
00:09:37And a 1-0.
00:09:40Popped up to the left.
00:09:41Into foul ground.
00:09:43And he can't make the play.
00:09:45Here comes the pitch.
00:09:55Line drive.
00:09:56Base hit.
00:10:02Couple of hits in a row for him here.
00:10:04I don't know how he's able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it.
00:10:08That pitch was inside, and he let it get really deep.
00:10:11So, pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it.
00:10:16And next for New York, Mickey Mantle.
00:10:24First offering, and it just misses.
00:10:26Gehrig hit behind Babe Ruth in those murderer's row days.
00:10:29They both have tons of power, but their home runs had much different trajectories.
00:10:39The pitch.
00:10:41Good eye right there.
00:10:43While Ruth hit these high, towering fly balls out of the park,
00:10:47Gehrig just crushes line drives into the stands.
00:10:50I mean, he hit absolute bullets.
00:11:02Next offering misses.
00:11:04They're now 3-0.
00:11:051.
00:11:05The pitch.
00:11:18And ball four to a board.
00:11:21His ability to draw walks has been something that's been part of his career since day one.
00:11:28And up next for New York, Roger Matt.
00:11:30This guy is one of the best athletes in the sport.
00:11:34It's been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position.
00:11:37Some guys just take it to another level.
00:11:40For him right now at the plate, it's like everyone else is in slow motion, and he's in full speed.
00:11:46And first offering is fouled off.
00:11:49Yeah, he can move the ball around, add and subtract, get some weak contact at times.
00:11:55So, you don't worry as much.
00:11:58Runners on the move.
00:12:00Swing and a miss.
00:12:01Throw to third.
00:12:02Save.
00:12:03Double steal.
00:12:04Wow, that's a pretty elite throwing arm right there from the catcher's spot.
00:12:08Pretty daring for him to try to steal third right there, but he gets to the bag.
00:12:12Maybe the element of surprise was what came in, because he's not used to guys running on it.
00:12:16And right there, still in third base, probably caught him off guard a little bit.
00:12:23Got him looking.
00:12:25And there's two away.
00:12:27Just excellent location on that inside fastball really locked him up.
00:12:31And it's a hitter.
00:12:33It's not typically what you're looking for.
00:12:34You're trying to protect away.
00:12:36And then, so you can be a little bit hardy with two strikes.
00:12:39Hard to tell if he was fooled or if he thought it would be called the ball.
00:12:42But either way, that's a really nice pick.
00:12:45And the batter now, Yogi Berry in there in his own one.
00:12:59Two outs, two in scoring position.
00:13:07And ball one.
00:13:08He's so good about trying to drive the ball to the opposite field gap in these situations.
00:13:13If he takes that approach, he could bust this game wide open.
00:13:19And a one-one.
00:13:22Just missed.
00:13:24It's a big opportunity right here, but I love the way he's slowing the game down.
00:13:28He's shrinking his zone, making sure he gets to the pitch that he wants to hit.
00:13:32But two-one.
00:13:35In the air, left side.
00:13:36And Ricky Henderson, the grab.
00:13:41And that is the third out of the inning.
00:13:43Here at a new Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.
00:14:06And now, Reddy Jackson.
00:14:11Guidry back to work.
00:14:14All on there.
00:14:20The lefty, the one-oh.
00:14:23How a miss.
00:14:26Patrick Johnson calling the balls and strikes.
00:14:28Pretty standard zone.
00:14:32And that's important because you've got to make guys earn it.
00:14:35Now, three and oh.
00:14:46And a pitch.
00:14:50And now, three and one.
00:14:51And that one sliced foul.
00:15:11Cut on and miss.
00:15:13Struck him out.
00:15:14One down.
00:15:15Well, that slider wasn't even close to the strike zone, and he got him to chase.
00:15:19That's just a bad approach right there.
00:15:20Either he was looking for something else and got completely fooled,
00:15:24or he was sitting all over the slider and just couldn't resist the temptation.
00:15:27But, man, really expanded right there and didn't have a chance of making contact with that pitch.
00:15:32Another batter now.
00:15:34Mark McGuire.
00:15:46And now the lefty.
00:15:47That one fouled off.
00:15:580-2 now.
00:16:00In the air center field.
00:16:15Puts the squeeze on it.
00:16:16And there's two down.
00:16:17Now, that is it.
00:16:23This is a beautiful.
00:16:24Al Simmons.
00:16:28Al Simmons.
00:16:29This guy has turned into a beast.
00:16:32Obviously, a guy who makes good contact, hits for average.
00:16:37But one of the things in today's game, the value, and the fact that he hits both righties and lefties.
00:16:42This one in the air right field.
00:16:45Squeezes it.
00:16:46And the inning is over.
00:16:48Nothing doing there for the A's.
00:16:50And they're down 2-0.
00:17:01Back at Yankee Stadium.
00:17:03Here's the second baseman.
00:17:04Robinson Cano.
00:17:05They're so reliant on the matchups nowadays, Chris.
00:17:10And it's huge when you don't have to sit a guy or platoon him.
00:17:13When you can hit both sides in terms of pitcher's arms, you're a guy that it's hard to take out of the lineup.
00:17:19And I think it's very important today when everything is under the microscope.
00:17:34Yohan.
00:17:36And the pitch is outside.
00:17:38Ball one.
00:17:43Here's a 1-1.
00:17:46And that one fouled off.
00:17:47Well, on paper, it's favorable to have a fairly quick inning here with two of the three hitters he's set to face,
00:17:54batting from the left side, same side he throws from.
00:18:02And the pitch.
00:18:05In the air out to center, Simmons in position.
00:18:10And it's caught for the out.
00:18:15Batting up.
00:18:16The third baseman.
00:18:20Now the third baseman, Greg Nittles.
00:18:35Leiter sank at first.
00:18:38Up next to me.
00:18:41Up next to me.
00:18:42A shortstop.
00:18:44Yeah.
00:18:45There we go.
00:18:48So, two down now.
00:18:50And here is Phil Random.
00:18:52Kicks and fires.
00:19:07Good eye right there.
00:19:08He wasn't real sharp in the first, got hit around, but really more so, didn't throw a ton of strikes.
00:19:17Well, he's just got to find a way to settle down.
00:19:19He was clearly fighting himself out there, not really finding the strike zone, walking batters.
00:19:24So, we'll see if he can get back on track and fill up the zone a little bit more.
00:19:27Next pitch inside.
00:19:29Next pitch inside.
00:19:30It's two and one.
00:19:35Kicks, Indians.
00:19:37On the ground right side.
00:19:40And it goes just foul.
00:19:42The pitch stays alive.
00:20:04And the pitch.
00:20:07And now it's filled up.
00:20:12And there's a foul ball.
00:20:25Now he's desperately looking for that swing and miss.
00:20:28He's going to have to just change speeds a little bit.
00:20:30Try to move it around.
00:20:32Create just a little bit of illusion at the end.
00:20:35The other way.
00:20:36Makes the grab.
00:20:37And that's the inning.
00:20:38So, the Yanks go in order.
00:20:40But they're on top to nothing.
00:20:42Welcome back.
00:20:57And now it's going to be home run Baker.
00:21:00Back to work.
00:21:04Back to work.
00:21:07Ball one.
00:21:08No strikes.
00:21:09But why did he kick the pitch?
00:21:27To account great hitter at the dish.
00:21:29If you're going to miss, you're going to miss outside of the zone.
00:21:31You miss inside of the strike zone, you'll be asking the umpire for a new baseball.
00:21:35Nice pitch is downstairs.
00:21:39And there's a strike.
00:21:52And there's a strike.
00:21:58Left-hand batter waits.
00:22:003-2 now.
00:22:023-2 now.
00:22:15The line of the pitch.
00:22:19Foul off again.
00:22:20And remains 3-2.
00:22:22That one is absolutely belted.
00:22:34Way back there.
00:22:35On the warning track.
00:22:37And he holds it in.
00:22:39Trying to take on the wind in left field right there.
00:22:41Just a little too much traffic up in the air.
00:22:44Mother Nature won that one.
00:22:46And it's hard to say, but I think that might be gone otherwise.
00:22:49So here's Murphy now.
00:23:00First pitch, and that's in for a strike.
00:23:02And here it comes.
00:23:09Way inside.
00:23:10Gets out of the way.
00:23:18The 1-1.
00:23:21Swings through that.
00:23:22Wow, no fear right there.
00:23:24I mean, that's why they didn't move to the very last moment.
00:23:28Incredibly difficult to pick that up.
00:23:29Just kind of have to tip your cap on that pick.
00:23:39Only two here.
00:23:42Swing and a miss.
00:23:43Handcuffed him with that slider.
00:23:45And now too long.
00:23:47Man, that slider bearing in your hands like that.
00:23:49It's just so tough to fight off.
00:23:51It's kind of like a cutter.
00:23:52It just can eat you off.
00:23:54Saw you off.
00:23:55Tell you what, hitters have nightmares about that pitch.
00:23:57Perfectly executed out there in the mouth.
00:24:00Two outs, bases empty.
00:24:02Now, Mickey.
00:24:06First pitch, and he just misses.
00:24:19Left-hand hitter waits.
00:24:20He swings and fouls were off.
00:24:32Two down, the way on.
00:24:35That one's in there.
00:24:36One and two.
00:24:37And a swing and a miss.
00:24:45And that's that.
00:24:50And one, two, three.
00:24:51Go the A's.
00:24:52They trail it here to nothing.
00:24:54Bottom of the inning, and now the center fielder, Joe DiMaggio.
00:25:07And the pitch.
00:25:15And ball one.
00:25:16Next offering is foul back.
00:25:33Here comes the pitch.
00:25:35Out to center.
00:25:37Simmons.
00:25:38Has this one sized up?
00:25:40And there's one down.
00:25:41Here at a new Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, and they have this new ballpark that is absolutely gorgeous,
00:25:50but there's still some of that old school feel to it.
00:25:53Ruth.
00:26:11Ruth.
00:26:12The next hit takes foul one.
00:26:17The pitch.
00:26:18Well, usually a high level of confidence when you're facing a young pitcher out there on the mound.
00:26:27In this situation, a head 2-0.
00:26:30He's put himself in a really good spot.
00:26:342-0.
00:26:36And there's the ball.
00:26:37Yeah, you have to connect the past with the present.
00:26:41And they did a really nice job of the monument park out there where you can go and walk through and see the legends.
00:26:47This is New York.
00:26:49It is the greatest city, I would say, in the country, if not the world.
00:26:54So you expect them to build a ballpark that's going to be incredibly rich in that tradition.
00:27:06The pitch.
00:27:09Strike two.
00:27:10What about as a left-handed hitter?
00:27:12And I'm sure that Porsche is in right field.
00:27:15Were you ever tempted to just try and think in terms of leaning on something as a left-handed hitter and just trying to yank it on the right field wall?
00:27:23I don't think I need to be tempted to do that.
00:27:25I think that's all I was trying to do because I didn't have a whole lot of power.
00:27:29For Luke Garrett.
00:27:34Luke Garrett stepping in now for the Yankees.
00:27:36Got him a throwback.
00:27:38No batting gloves.
00:27:40When he steps into the batter's box, the comfort level looks so high.
00:27:44It doesn't matter what kind of delivery that pitcher has, what kind of velocity, what kind of secondary stuff.
00:27:50He is so settled in there.
00:27:52He owns the home plate area.
00:27:54That one is hammered.
00:28:01Right field.
00:28:02Back there.
00:28:05Hauls it in on the warning track.
00:28:08One, two, three.
00:28:08Go to the Yankees.
00:28:10But they hold the 2-0 lead.
00:28:11On the fourth, now here's the leadoff hitter for the A's, Ricky Henderson.
00:28:28The line of the pitch.
00:28:31And a big swing to miss.
00:28:33It's good to be at the top of the order here.
00:28:35You want to get on, see if you can get to stone the base, maybe get around the bases and pick up a run.
00:28:41And a 0-1.
00:28:46And downstairs.
00:28:55And that one ripped in to right.
00:28:57And a base hit.
00:28:59Off to a good start with a leadoff nod.
00:29:04Now that.
00:29:05Look at the ball.
00:29:07Hurt.
00:29:08Taylor.
00:29:08Hurt.
00:29:11Good speed on the base pass.
00:29:15He handles the bat very well.
00:29:18I would be surprised if the skipper puts on some type of hit and run or run and hit.
00:29:23And a 1-0.
00:29:35And a 1-0 off the outside edge.
00:29:38This is one of those situations defensively where you can't try to do too much.
00:29:41You've got to make sure that you feel the ball cleanly and get one out first.
00:29:45It's going to be tough to get two with this kind of speed in the batter's box.
00:29:50Henderson gets his lead at first with nobody out.
00:29:53Pickoff throw.
00:29:55Henderson back in standing.
00:29:56The pitch.
00:30:10Yeah.
00:30:11There's a strike.
00:30:12So important for him to control the heart rate right now.
00:30:15He's got to go through the heart of this lineup.
00:30:17And a pitch.
00:30:28And he lays down a bunt.
00:30:31Whips it to first.
00:30:33Got him as he tried to bunt his way aboard.
00:30:35The first baseman, number three.
00:30:41Jimmy Fox.
00:30:48Jimmy Fox now at the plate.
00:30:51Singing he's got a history of coming through in the big spots.
00:30:54I know I like to talk about I'm not sure where their clutch actually exists.
00:30:58But you look at the numbers.
00:30:59And this guy always seems to deliver in those spots.
00:31:03And the first pitch misses for ball one.
00:31:13Tying run at the plate.
00:31:15And another ball.
00:31:17Hitter's got some good opposite field power.
00:31:19What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield
00:31:23is that the base runner at second has a very good read
00:31:26and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit.
00:31:332-0.
00:31:36Good eye right there.
00:31:38Appears they're working around him with the base open, Singing.
00:31:40Well, you know these 2-0 counts, Boo.
00:31:42They're just not what they used to be.
00:31:44And we sound like old guys when I say that.
00:31:46But ultimately, this is a strategic game
00:31:49and you expect to see this type of approach by the pitcher in this situation.
00:31:52Next offering is fouled back.
00:32:10Right side.
00:32:11Mack under it.
00:32:13And puts the squeeze on that.
00:32:15And there's two down.
00:32:16And now the right fielder, Reggie Jackson.
00:32:25He was a strikeout victim his first time.
00:32:41First pitch doesn't find the zone.
00:32:43The only adjustment he needs to make is his target.
00:32:46If you aim at the outside corner,
00:32:48that slider's going to end up way off the plate.
00:32:50Perhaps look a little more down the middle
00:32:52and you get it right where you want it.
00:32:55Next offering is in for a strike.
00:32:58Generally, second, third time through the lineup,
00:33:00you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches
00:33:03and command them.
00:33:04Looks like he's doing a nice job of it.
00:33:05Here's an opportunity to do some damage
00:33:30and perhaps unlock this offense.
00:33:333-1 count.
00:33:34Be ready to turn on a fastball.
00:33:393-1 now.
00:33:41Swing and a miss.
00:33:43And he was fouled.
00:33:44Talk about tying the guy up.
00:33:46That was ugly.
00:33:48Runner second.
00:33:49Two down.
00:33:56Swing and a miss.
00:33:57And that is that.
00:33:59The A's strand won.
00:34:01They trail things here to nothing.
00:34:07Back now in the Bronx.
00:34:09Bottom four.
00:34:10Here's a big power threat.
00:34:11Mickey Mantle.
00:34:12Yankee.
00:34:13The left fielder.
00:34:15Mickey Mantle.
00:34:18The pitch.
00:34:19Save four homers in 22 games at old Yankee Stadium.
00:34:24What do you remember?
00:34:24Well, I remember my rookie year hitting two in one game.
00:34:29And before that game in the clubhouse,
00:34:31there was a gentleman there who owned a suit company
00:34:34there in downtown Manhattan.
00:34:35And he said to me,
00:34:36Hey, kid, you hit a home run in the game tonight.
00:34:38Come over to the store tomorrow,
00:34:40and I'll give you a free suit.
00:34:42Next one misses.
00:34:43And that's ball three.
00:34:45That's a strike.
00:34:56So I went into the game.
00:34:57I happened to hit two.
00:34:58And I walked into the store the next day,
00:35:00and he looked at me and said,
00:35:01You're trying to put me out of business, aren't you?
00:35:03And that was a great, great experience that I had as a rookie
00:35:07playing against the Yankees, playing in New York.
00:35:09Swings and misses, and we're filled up.
00:35:15Well, the hitter looked pretty comfortable on that swing.
00:35:17Pitchers don't like to see that
00:35:19and see how he changes it up on this next pitch.
00:35:24At the belt, he fires.
00:35:27And a foul ball.
00:35:28The punch out there, one away.
00:35:47Roger McMahon stepping in now for the Yankees.
00:35:50Caught looking his first time off.
00:35:54So did Super Joe give you two suits?
00:35:57Super Joe hooked me up with two suits.
00:36:03In there for strike one.
00:36:21Kicks in deals.
00:36:23And it's even up.
00:36:27The lefty ready, and a 1-1.
00:36:33There's the strike.
00:36:34Good pitch to hit.
00:36:35On a tee, off in the zone.
00:36:37I think he was looking for something else right there.
00:36:39And now the lefty.
00:36:50Way back there.
00:36:53Pulls it in on the warning track.
00:36:55It's a really good swing.
00:36:57He just didn't get quite enough of it to beat the wind.
00:36:59It's blown in from right field right now.
00:37:01And now the catcher comes up to him.
00:37:06Yogi Ferry.
00:37:07He's got a nice, short, compact swing.
00:37:10Doesn't swing and miss a whole lot.
00:37:17And he swings and misses, and it's done to get one.
00:37:20Okay, swing now.
00:37:22He had a mind made up.
00:37:23As soon as that ball left the end of the pitcher, he was going to swing at it.
00:37:27The 0-1.
00:37:30There's a swing and a drive.
00:37:33And that one is out of here.
00:37:37The last one out to right is second over in this series.
00:37:41And they add on.
00:37:42It's 3-0.
00:37:43With a low 90s fastball, you have to look on the edges and hit your spot.
00:38:04If you don't, you can hit hard.
00:38:06Really good swing there.
00:38:08Patient, waited for it.
00:38:10It was like BP all over again.
00:38:11So two down.
00:38:13Now Maddie Robinson-Kanoe.
00:38:15First offering, and it just misses.
00:38:31And that's outside.
00:38:41Swing and a miss.
00:38:43That's strike one.
00:38:53Two outs.
00:38:56And now two and two.
00:38:57If he doesn't get a knock right here, that pitch he just took is going to eat at him for a while.
00:39:02You might not see another pitch like that from a top-level guy like this.
00:39:08And he deals.
00:39:10Swing and a pop-off in foul ground.
00:39:13And Ricky Henderson to grab.
00:39:16And that is that.
00:39:17Solo Homer extends the Yankees lead.
00:39:19It's now 3-0.
00:39:29New inning getting started.
00:39:31Here's some real power at the plate.
00:39:34Mark McGuire.
00:39:34He's a guy who does it all with the lack of contact in today's game.
00:39:40This guy is for contacts who delivers average, but there's on-base slug too.
00:39:46The line of the pitch.
00:39:49Yeah, the curve drops in for a strike.
00:39:51Early in the count, you have to be real careful because of that power.
00:39:55But then, if this hitter gets a strike or two on him, he's still very comfortable.
00:39:59Because he has the ability to get the barrel to the baseball, he's a threat deep in the count as well.
00:40:07Next offer in the dirt.
00:40:09And the count is 1-2.
00:40:13The line to kick the pitch.
00:40:16And the 1-2 misses to even the count.
00:40:22And the pitch.
00:40:25And this is inside.
00:40:27Expect for that guy to come right at you with a fastball.
00:40:31Something in his own because he does not want to allow a layoff walk.
00:40:35And here it comes.
00:40:38Swings and misses.
00:40:40And there's one way.
00:40:41Not the best location with a fastball on strike three.
00:40:44But when you're pumping high 90s, you can weigh with some of those more margin for error.
00:40:49You know, the fastball becomes such a huge strikeout pitch in the sport.
00:40:52And I think a lot of it has to do with all the attention and emphasis on improved spin rates.
00:40:56These fastballs are just exploding out of the pitcher's hands and jumping through the zone.
00:41:01And here is Al.
00:41:04First pitch.
00:41:05Just misses.
00:41:07For you growing up in New York City, you're a big sports fan.
00:41:11Tell me about your experience with the Yankees growing up.
00:41:14I really went to Shea Stadium more than I did to Yankee Stadium.
00:41:18I grew up a Phillies fan.
00:41:19There was one game, though, that I went to as a kid.
00:41:22I sat in the upper deck.
00:41:24It was the game that Bo Jackson hit three homers in his first three plate appearances.
00:41:29And then hurt his shoulder, diving for Deion Sanders inside the park home run.
00:41:34That's probably the most memorable game that I ever attended as a fan at an old Yankee Stadium.
00:41:43Two-one pitches in there.
00:41:45The count is even.
00:41:54Kicks and fires.
00:41:57That one just misses.
00:41:59Full count three and two.
00:42:04He swings and drives one out to deep left field.
00:42:28That's back.
00:42:29And gone.
00:42:30That'll fire up the dugout, and they inch closer.
00:42:37It's three-one.
00:42:38That one got in the jet stream on a line drive.
00:42:55You saw the numbers on the backs of the jerseys of the outfielders, which is usually bad news.
00:43:00And all of a sudden, they're back in this ball game.
00:43:03And stepping in is the speedy home run, Baker.
00:43:08He flyed out to the warning track in his first trip.
00:43:11That one pushed foul out of playoff to the left.
00:43:13Next pitch is inside.
00:43:32And one-and-one.
00:43:40That one missed.
00:43:41Left-hand batter waits.
00:43:50Good eye right there.
00:43:51A rare three-ball count here.
00:43:53He's been throwing strikes all day.
00:43:55Got to be ready to hit if you're in the box.
00:43:57Here comes the pitch.
00:44:06And it's ball four.
00:44:08He missed down low.
00:44:15Here's your speed threat, Danny Murphy.
00:44:17First offering misses badly for ball one.
00:44:34Baker, the base runner, first with one out.
00:44:36Next pitch is inside.
00:44:44Two-and-oh.
00:44:45Chris with that distraction and the speedy guy at first.
00:44:49He's in a favorable hitter's count.
00:44:51If nothing else, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in.
00:44:55Two-and-oh.
00:45:08But you want.
00:45:10And there's a breaking ball that drops in there.
00:45:12And a pitch.
00:45:21Got him swinging.
00:45:23And he fell off strikes for the second time today.
00:45:27Stood absolutely no chance on that slider right there.
00:45:30And I couldn't mean to laugh, but that's a tough one.
00:45:33I mean, pretty much a perfect strikeout pitch.
00:45:35It looks like a fastball middle end.
00:45:37Kind of has putter action, and it just bunches you off to where you can't get your hands through
00:45:42and the barrel to it.
00:45:43Not much you can do unless you recognize the spin early and you spin on it.
00:45:49Now here is Mickey McCann.
00:45:52That one's in there on one.
00:46:05And that misses off the outside edge.
00:46:29Next off, he's in for a strike.
00:46:35The pitch.
00:46:48Got him.
00:46:49Good job at damage control right there.
00:46:52And he's getting one back on the soul blast.
00:46:55It's now a 3-1 ball game.
00:46:57Ready to go for the last half of the inning.
00:47:08Here's the third baseman, Greg Nettles.
00:47:11What I get here.
00:47:12The third baseman, Greg Nettles.
00:47:18The pitch.
00:47:20That one off the mark.
00:47:21And that is ball one.
00:47:23And the pitch.
00:47:30That one misses.
00:47:32And that's ball two.
00:47:33He's been raking in recent games, and a big reason why, getting ahead and counts.
00:47:39He's been able to do that consistently, and you see the results.
00:47:42That one drilled left field.
00:47:45He dies, but can't hang on.
00:47:47That's a base hit.
00:47:48Oh, when you fall behind in the count, you've got to come into the zone,
00:47:54and then you guys have a better chance of hitting by the heart like he did right there.
00:48:02And stepping in for the Yankees, Phil Randolph.
00:48:10In there, it's only one.
00:48:12Line drive, base hit right center field.
00:48:33Lead runner to second, so two on and nobody out.
00:48:36That's back-to-back singles for him, I'll tell you.
00:48:39Man, it's such a good feeling when you smoke a line drive into the gap like that.
00:48:44I'm sure, home runs are king, but I feel like nothing makes you feel like a true professional hitter
00:48:49more than a bull the other way.
00:48:51Next to hit, Joe.
00:48:53And first off, Rangis fell off.
00:48:55And there's a curve through for a stride.
00:49:13The Athletics has a movement in action.
00:49:15Tim Hudson, the hard-throwing right, he's up and loosening.
00:49:19Stewart, the hard-throwing right-hander, up as well.
00:49:23First and second here, no outs.
00:49:24In the dirt.
00:49:33Nothing happening on the bases, though.
00:49:39The pitch.
00:49:42And a foul ball, he stays alive.
00:49:53The pitch.
00:49:55That one missing inside.
00:49:57He was looking to come up with the shutdown inning.
00:50:00And off to a shaky start.
00:50:02Two-two now.
00:50:14On the ground, could be two.
00:50:18To second, there's one.
00:50:19On the first double play.
00:50:21Now back to the deputy division, Babe Ruth.
00:50:35Babe Ruth stepping in now for the Yankees.
00:50:38First off, Rangis misses the ball.
00:50:52First off, Rangis misses the ball.
00:51:00Next off, Rangis foul back.
00:51:01Left-hand hitter, waits.
00:51:12And a swing and miss.
00:51:14I think he was sitting on speed there.
00:51:15Here's a one-two.
00:51:21Swing and a miss.
00:51:22Struck him out.
00:51:24That's out number three.
00:51:25One left for the Yankees.
00:51:27As the lead remains, 3-1.
00:51:28And welcome back.
00:51:39Start of the 6th, John Schombie with Chris Singleton.
00:51:42And leading off, Ricky Henderson.
00:51:44Giddery, back to work.
00:52:02Swing and that ball smashed on the line.
00:52:05Drops in for a hit.
00:52:07Couldn't run it down.
00:52:10And that's a leadoff double.
00:52:12Oh, no waiting around right there.
00:52:14He was ready to swing it on the first pitch.
00:52:16Fastball pretty much middle-middle.
00:52:18And that's what you fall asleep dreaming about as a hitter.
00:52:21So no surprise, he put a great swing on it.
00:52:33Burt Campanaris up next to the A's.
00:52:36He's turned into one of the best shortstops in the game.
00:52:42Bunting, and it's right in front of the plate.
00:52:47He's got it.
00:52:48And there's one down.
00:52:49And here is Jimmy Fox.
00:53:04He's got the power, but great contact skills.
00:53:07One of the best contact hitters in the game.
00:53:10First pitch, he has to get out of the way.
00:53:20Looking to get something going.
00:53:21This is the guy you wanted to play.
00:53:23He's been great for this team.
00:53:24He is a professional hitter.
00:53:26The pitch.
00:53:35Foul ball.
00:53:37Well, he knows.
00:53:39They don't want to give him anything to hit.
00:53:41But when you've got opportunities to drive and run, you've got to expand the zone.
00:53:45He's capable of going out there and doing damage with it.
00:53:48Out of the belt and fires.
00:53:50Swings through that one for strike two.
00:53:52Just an outstanding job of spinning the baseball, moving it around, doing what he does.
00:54:00Swing and a miss, and he struck him out.
00:54:04So he's gotten deep into this game.
00:54:07And at least so far, not showing a ton of signs of fatigue.
00:54:12Reggie Jackson, the next to hit.
00:54:14Fall off foul.
00:54:410-1 down.
00:54:42Anderson stands at second with two gone.
00:54:55Next offering is way upstairs.
00:54:58Pretty standard high 0-2 fastball right there.
00:55:02If you're smart, you'll look for something down in the zone, but not too far.
00:55:05You want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt.
00:55:07And a swing and a miss.
00:55:09It's a slider in the dirt.
00:55:10Got him.
00:55:11Ending over on the strikeout.
00:55:13To the bottom of the sixth we go.
00:55:14Four, five, six.
00:55:16Coming up.
00:55:17Yankees three and the A's one.
00:55:19A's one.
00:55:20A's one.
00:55:21A's one.
00:55:21A's one.
00:55:22A's one.
00:55:22A's one.
00:55:22A's one.
00:55:22A's one.
00:55:23A's one.
00:55:24A's one.
00:55:24A's one.
00:55:25Out of the sixth.
00:55:25Now here's the Yankees clean up here.
00:55:28Luke Gehrig.
00:55:31That goes without saying, one of the biggest legends of the game here in Gehrig.
00:55:34Probably the greatest first baseman of all time.
00:55:37And the first pitch misses for a ball one.
00:55:40Bullpen activity starting up now.
00:55:42A lefty up and throwing out there.
00:55:44And the one.
00:56:03And strike two.
00:56:05In 1929, Gehrig slashed 300, 431, 584.
00:56:10Not too bad, right?
00:56:11Well, that was maybe the worst season of his career.
00:56:15Tells you about what kind of player he was.
00:56:21And the pitch.
00:56:23About to short.
00:56:25Campaneros handles.
00:56:27Gets it to first.
00:56:28One away.
00:56:29Bottom of the sixth.
00:56:33The left here.
00:56:34Number seven.
00:56:36Mickey.
00:56:38Mickey Mantle.
00:56:39Stepping in now for the Yankees.
00:56:42This guy makes great contact.
00:56:44One of the best in the game.
00:56:46At putting bat on the ball.
00:56:47He's got such quick hands.
00:56:48And he's gaining pitch recognition.
00:56:50That keeps him square to the plate.
00:56:52There's a good chance that his bat stays in the zone a long time.
00:56:55And that produces solid contact consistently.
00:57:00Kick, Cedius.
00:57:02And another ball.
00:57:03And here it comes.
00:57:18On the ground of the third.
00:57:19It's through for a hit.
00:57:21So, and the board now will go away.
00:57:30Here comes the manager out of the dugout.
00:57:32And he'll make a move to the bullpen.
00:57:34Any plane will depart.
00:57:36As he heads off, we'll step aside for a minute.
00:57:38Back with a new pitcher after this break.
00:57:40Tim Hudson into the game.
00:57:51And he'll do his best to keep this close.
00:57:53About this point of the ball game, we're talking about middle innings.
00:57:56And a little length out of this arm coming out of the bullpen.
00:58:01We'll see just how many outs he's able to get his skipper.
00:58:04Roger Mack stepping in now for the Yankees.
00:58:08A guy who makes an impact not just at the plate, but also in the field.
00:58:11That misses the zone.
00:58:27Ball two.
00:58:28Last two pitches have been down in the zone.
00:58:30Pitcher clearly trying to get that ground ball double play.
00:58:32But in this count, we're going to have to give in.
00:58:35Elevate his pitches and get back into the sit-back.
00:58:38Swing and a miss.
00:58:40And it's two and a one now.
00:58:41And it's two and a one now.
00:58:52Comes up empty.
00:58:53That's strike two.
00:58:55From a pitcher's perspective, that's a beautiful splitter right there.
00:58:59So Henry, you don't like it.
00:59:00But he's commanded his fastball in that same tunnel.
00:59:03That splitter comes and the bottom just falls out of it.
00:59:09Right into the plate.
00:59:11Bounce to the right.
00:59:15And he picks it up in foul territory.
00:59:23Here comes the pitch.
00:59:24There goes the runner from first.
00:59:26There's the ball.
00:59:27Throw to second and he's out.
00:59:29Right into the kick, steals.
00:59:52Stays alive.
00:59:53A line of the pitch.
00:59:54Good play to appearance there.
01:00:07Able to take the walk.
01:00:08One of the things about that two-out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead.
01:00:14So ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two-out RBI.
01:00:19And those are the best.
01:00:21That is if you are the offensive side of it.
01:00:23Barry in the box again.
01:00:26Takes a strike.
01:00:28Some guys are just more confident.
01:00:29They can track that first pitch out of the hand of the pitcher.
01:00:32They don't care if they fall behind 0-1.
01:00:33Right into the air left field.
01:00:42Henderson under it.
01:00:44Makes the catch.
01:00:46And that is that.
01:00:48The Yankees lead one.
01:00:50And the score stays 3-1.
01:00:52We go to the top of the 7th.
01:01:04Now the 8th designated hitter, Mark McGuire.
01:01:09Mark McGuire.
01:01:17And he is.
01:01:18And that is downstairs and outside.
01:01:37Oh, that got away from him.
01:01:39And he is going to reach a hit-by-pitch to lead off the inning.
01:01:43Police is glad he got hit with an off-speed pitch there instead of a fastball.
01:01:46Oh, man, that would have hurt a lot more if it had velocity.
01:01:59Now, this guy is definitely looking for a big swing to the bat right here.
01:02:03Try to close that gap.
01:02:04But, you know, at the very least, if you can find a way to manufacture that run from first,
01:02:08it feels like it's really important to getting back into this ballgame.
01:02:11Kicks and fires.
01:02:21There's a strike to the knees.
01:02:22And the count is 0-1-2.
01:02:24And that lefty.
01:02:31And this way it is.
01:02:35One way.
01:02:35You hear people talk about letting the ball travel so often in terms of a hitting approach.
01:02:40And that's a great example of why right there.
01:02:42If he's willing to let that curveball get a little deeper in the zone before he commits,
01:02:46he's way more likely to recognize that it's making a beeline for the dirt.
01:02:50On the other side, still a nice two-strike pitch, though.
01:02:54Next up for the A's, home run Baker.
01:02:57He's 0-1.
01:02:57First pitch doesn't find the zone.
01:03:12Book wire over at first with one away.
01:03:22That one drifts inside.
01:03:27Next pitch misses inside.
01:03:443-0.
01:03:44Tying run to the plate.
01:03:58That just missed.
01:03:59He walked him on four pitches.
01:04:01He's making things difficult for himself right now out there on the mound.
01:04:04But his confidence should still be high enough to get out of this.
01:04:08But he's going to have to buckle down right here.
01:04:10Manager out of the dugout.
01:04:12And he's going to make a change.
01:04:13Ron Guidry departs two-run ballgame as he heads for the dugout.
01:04:18And will be back with a new pitcher.
01:04:25Wade Ha.
01:04:26On the pitch out of the pen here.
01:04:28And he'll work on holding his lead.
01:04:31Wade Ha.
01:04:33First and second, one out.
01:04:44Danny Murphy digs in now.
01:04:54And he swings and misses at the initial offering.
01:04:57Runners at first and second with one gone.
01:05:09Runners at first and second with one gone.
01:05:16On the ground, two ball.
01:05:19Off-balance beat.
01:05:20There's one.
01:05:20Return throw to first.
01:05:22Got him.
01:05:22Double play.
01:05:23And that'll do it.
01:05:24Tidy work out of the Yankee bullpen there.
01:05:27Midway in inning number seven.
01:05:29And it's time to stretch.
01:05:31Yankee's three.
01:05:32And the ace won.
01:05:39Back at the Bronx.
01:05:41Spot on the seventh.
01:05:41And now Robinson can come.
01:05:44And the Yankee.
01:05:45To the second base.
01:05:47All that is good.
01:05:49Cut.
01:05:49Oh.
01:05:57The winded kick the pitch.
01:06:00Ball one there.
01:06:02Oh, with both starters out of the game, this quickly becomes a bullpen game.
01:06:06And this is something we see more and more in the game today, especially in the postseason.
01:06:11Throw to Fox and one away in the bottom of the seven.
01:06:18Now that's the third baseman.
01:06:21Greg Nettles.
01:06:24Greg Nettles.
01:06:38First pitch.
01:06:39Just misses.
01:06:41Good eye right there.
01:06:48Good eye right there.
01:06:54The winded to the pitch.
01:06:58And a foul ball.
01:07:00Makes the count two and one.
01:07:02Swing and a line drive caught.
01:07:13No batter number 10.
01:07:18Cooked off.
01:07:19Phil Randall.
01:07:21There you go.
01:07:23So the batting order turns over.
01:07:26Now the play.
01:07:27Phil Randall.
01:07:28First pitch.
01:07:37First pitch.
01:07:38And he just misses.
01:07:39Two outs.
01:07:42Two balls and no strikes.
01:07:50And righty deals.
01:07:54In the air out towards right center.
01:07:57Jackson.
01:07:57Out of the move.
01:07:58And he flies back.
01:08:00Makes the grab on the run.
01:08:01And that'll do it.
01:08:03Yanks held in check.
01:08:05But they still lead in 3-1.
01:08:06Ready to begin the 8th.
01:08:16And now here's the 8th catcher.
01:08:17Number 2.
01:08:19Here comes the pitch.
01:08:23Lifted in the air right field.
01:08:29Matt.
01:08:30Moving on to this long.
01:08:31Pulls it in.
01:08:32And it is one away.
01:08:42Goose Gossage.
01:08:44Gets the rock out of the pen.
01:08:46And he'll do his best to hang on to this lead.
01:08:50Number 54.
01:08:52Goose.
01:08:53Goose.
01:08:53Goose.
01:08:59Ricky Henderson.
01:09:00Up next for the A's.
01:09:02Great speed.
01:09:03And great power.
01:09:05A great athlete.
01:09:06Quite simply.
01:09:08He's like Mike Trout.
01:09:10You figure whatever you put in his hand.
01:09:11Whether it's a bat.
01:09:12Whether it's a golf club.
01:09:13Whether it's a basketball.
01:09:14He can do it.
01:09:15And get it done.
01:09:16And a rare talent.
01:09:18So much fun to watch.
01:09:19Activity in the bullpen for the Yankees.
01:09:21Mariano Rivera.
01:09:22Gossage steals.
01:09:29Gossage steals.
01:09:31Swing and a miss.
01:09:32And it's on two.
01:09:34And it's on two.
01:09:42Next offering is foul back.
01:09:44Gossage ready.
01:09:53And a foul only stays alive.
01:09:57Going two now.
01:10:07Just misses the mark outside the zone.
01:10:12And that's awfully close.
01:10:13I don't know how you take that.
01:10:14He's seeing the ball out of the pitcher's hand really well right now.
01:10:17And down on strikes he goes.
01:10:20And there's two away.
01:10:22Well that's always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead in the count.
01:10:26And as a pitcher it really allows you to start expanding the zone.
01:10:29Guys become defensive.
01:10:31And all of a sudden for the hitter that plate starts to get really wide.
01:10:35And what happens is because of the pressure you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is.
01:10:41And that's what leads to the strikeout.
01:10:43Now here is Burt Campanaris.
01:10:47Swing and a pop-up.
01:10:48Foul territory for the catcher.
01:10:51And it makes the catch.
01:10:52And that's the inning.
01:10:54And the A's are gone in order.
01:10:56Score holds.
01:10:57It's 3-1.
01:11:07Back here at the ballpark.
01:11:09Here's the center fielder.
01:11:10Joe DiMaggio.
01:11:12Here we go.
01:11:12You talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond.
01:11:16And this guy is at the top of the list.
01:11:20And the right-hander back to work.
01:11:23Here's the strike.
01:11:24Yeah, we go beyond just the fielding percentage and what it looks like by the ability to have range and close holes that are normally there against an average defender.
01:11:36But this guy is special and you can see it in his first step quickness.
01:11:39One thing about that is speed never goes in the slot.
01:11:51And defense shouldn't either.
01:11:53Hitting-wise, you can struggle, you can lose your mechanics.
01:11:56But the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you're talented in that way.
01:12:02And this is what this guy does.
01:12:04One-two down.
01:12:05One-two down.
01:12:05Got him.
01:12:07And one out now.
01:12:11Babe Ruth, stepping in down for the Yankees.
01:12:19First pitch, and that's in for a strike.
01:12:30Late game, everyone gets a little tighter.
01:12:32Way to get ahead on a really good hit right there.
01:12:38The 0-1.
01:12:41And that's outside.
01:12:53Now you get to this part of the order.
01:12:56Yeah, there's some pop there, but more likely there's some base hits.
01:12:59So very important to be patient.
01:13:01Let the pitcher walk you, if you will.
01:13:02And the pitch.
01:13:14Misses inside.
01:13:17Full count down.
01:13:17Left-hand batter waits.
01:13:30And he walked him.
01:13:31What a battle.
01:13:34It's not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch.
01:13:37And I tell you what, he earned that one.
01:13:38Number four.
01:13:40Run around at first with one gone.
01:13:42So now the Yankees clean up here.
01:13:44Luke Erick for the fourth time tonight.
01:13:46And that's in there for strike one.
01:14:00The pitch.
01:14:02Now one and one.
01:14:05Ruth, the runner at first with one gone in the inning.
01:14:07Next off, he is in for a strike.
01:14:14Well, notice they've been pitching him hard inside.
01:14:17And the key is, if you're going to make a mistake, you've got to make it off the dish.
01:14:20If it leaks out over the plate with this kind of power, we ask it for a new baseball.
01:14:25And the right-hander deals.
01:14:28That smash towards Zetter.
01:14:29Simmons breaks it over to make the catch.
01:14:41And next for New York, Mickey Mantle.
01:14:44One for two.
01:14:54In there for strike one.
01:14:59And there's a ball.
01:15:12The pitch.
01:15:14A little bit low.
01:15:21Here's a two-one.
01:15:22And there he goes.
01:15:24Pitch misses in.
01:15:25Throw the second.
01:15:26Ow, the second.
01:15:27That ends the inning.
01:15:29Well, trying to get in the scoring position with a great catch and throw to end the inning.
01:15:34That's the way to pick up the pitcher.
01:15:39We're back.
01:15:40It's the top of the nine.
01:15:41And there's a new pitcher on the mound.
01:15:43Mariano Rivera.
01:15:44Trying to protect this lead.
01:15:46Mariano Rivera.
01:15:47All set for the start of the inning.
01:15:56And now the first baseman, Jimmy Fox.
01:15:59Well, he's always a threat.
01:16:01Even if this guy is 0-3 for the night with three strikeouts, he can come up that fourth time and do damage because he's that good.
01:16:08And the pitch.
01:16:12That's off the mark.
01:16:13And that's ball one.
01:16:14And who has been dropping off of theлей and has been dropping off of the tunnel.
01:16:29Allowing this.
01:16:40Late-swing foul called roll.
01:16:43So
01:17:11Bitch
01:17:13Guy looking down on strikes and he knew it both saw solid effort out of their starter
01:17:20The bullpen is following suit. It's just a good day as a manager or as a pitching coach
01:17:24You can hand the ball off with multiple arms and get stability from all their performances
01:17:33So here's the cleanup hitter for Oakland Reggie Jackson
01:17:36That one's in the arrow in one
01:18:00Left hand hitter waits
01:18:01Swing and a miss
01:18:03Go to follow this when the office has sputtered
01:18:07Somebody's got to find a way to get on keep the line moving and manufacture at least one run
01:18:12And then you get two or three
01:18:14Heal two
01:18:16Good eye in that spot
01:18:19Really good take, especially with two strikes
01:18:27And a ball and two strikes
01:18:29Stays alive
01:18:32And that chance handled on the first and they're down their last down
01:18:38And that chance handled on the first and they're down their last down
01:18:51Now that's going to be a hit
01:18:55Mark
01:18:57Maguire
01:18:57Two outs, bases empty
01:19:01Mark Maguire up next for the a's
01:19:03This one popped up, foul ground, first base side.
01:19:17Two down, nobody on, that one inside, and it's one and one.
01:19:34And out of the belt, and fires, and then count one and two.
01:19:47Off the outside edge, and now the count is two and two.
01:20:17And the next pitch is way outside.
01:20:31Pressure Mountain right here with the tying run in the on-deck circle.
01:20:36He's got to find the strike zone.
01:20:37Off the middle, and it gets by him.
01:20:54That's tremendous fight from him, and I know it's got the dugout fired up down there.
01:21:00Down to the last strike, and he comes up with a hit to keep the game alive.
01:21:04It ain't over yet.
01:21:07Al Simmons, up next for the A's.
01:21:13One for three.
01:21:31Pitch misses inside, and it's one and oh.
01:21:37The tying run at the plate.
01:21:45Just missed.
01:21:46And the pitch.
01:21:58Slide ball down the line.
01:22:00He's got it.
01:22:01Go game.
01:22:02The Yankees.
01:22:04Playing the win here by some great pitching and defense.
01:22:07These guys have been surely dominated in the series.
01:22:10Up now three games to none.
01:22:12Pretty demoralizing on the other side.
01:22:14You want to get this thing over as quickly as possible.
01:22:17So stay focused.
01:22:18Come back for the next game.
01:22:19And close out this series.
01:22:20Not a ton of offense to chat about as we look at the final numbers, but this was a good one.
01:22:35Yeah, it was a low-scoring game, but sometimes those can be the best, especially this time of year.
01:22:40And your final 3-1 for Chris Singleton and our entire crowd, John Sharpie, saying so long.
01:23:48I'll be right back.
01:23:53James.
01:23:54And we'll be right back.
