00:00:21Welcome in baseball fans and here in New York, baseball from the big city, the house that
00:00:27Ruthville. The show brings you a matchup of division rivals. It's the Toronto Blue Jays
00:00:33taking on the New York Yankees. First pitch coming your way next.
00:00:46Just about set to go and starting for the Yankees, the right-hander, number 21 at Singie.
00:00:53He's one of the most dominant arms in all of baseball. Very dominant his last time out.
00:00:58Picked up the win. Only allowed one run. These guys would love to see him back on his game in
00:01:03this one.
00:01:09Leading off the afternoon for Toronto, the second baseman, number 12.
00:01:21The wind of the pitch. And he lays down a bunt.
00:01:26Bare hands it. Tough play. Fires over to first. Got him trying to bunt for a hit.
00:01:34Let's take a look at the lineup for the Blue Jays.
00:01:37Batting second, a really important guy for them.
00:01:40Tony Fernandez.
00:01:42And Boog, he's a fun at bat to watch. I mean, definitely a threat whenever he's got that bat in
00:01:47his hands.
00:01:47But for me, it's all about the mechanics. They're so sound.
00:01:50And when he gets his foot down on time and starts his swing, so much consistency.
00:01:55That bat stays in the zone for a long time. And he squares up the baseball a lot.
00:02:07Tony Fernandez takes a ball here as he stands in now.
00:02:19Left-hand batter waits.
00:02:22And the slider catches the zone. Is there a little wrinkle to that? I think there was.
00:02:27Yeah. A little slider action.
00:02:36No score just getting started top of the first.
00:02:42Next pitch misses outside.
00:02:44And the count is 2-2.
00:02:52Kicks and fires.
00:02:55And it's filled up.
00:02:59One down. Base is empty.
00:03:03Fouled off again.
00:03:05And it remains 3-2.
00:03:12And the 3-2.
00:03:14And that's ball four.
00:03:22Man at first with one gone.
00:03:24Carlos Delgado will hit next.
00:03:28And that's in there for strike one.
00:03:44There's a strike.
00:03:45All right.
00:03:46Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire's calls.
00:03:50But at this point, he's going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the
00:03:55zone.
00:03:55Move over to first.
00:03:56Trying to keep him close.
00:04:06Righty to the plate.
00:04:08Squirts away a little bit.
00:04:10And an excellent job keeping it right there.
00:04:14Fernandez over at first with one away.
00:04:30And a 1-2 again.
00:04:32Run around the goal.
00:04:33Pitch misses.
00:04:34Safe at second.
00:04:35And he easily steals the bag.
00:04:38Well, a nice lead and a nice steal there to get into scoring position with the heart of the order
00:04:42at the plate.
00:04:43That might just lead them to pitching around these hitters a little more because of the open base.
00:04:47But it's early in this ballgame.
00:04:49Can't imagine it'll change the attack plan too much.
00:04:54In the air.
00:04:55Right field.
00:04:57Jackson racing over to make the catch.
00:05:01Lefties can definitely be a little pull-happy up there, especially with pitches that they see pretty well.
00:05:06That was a good example.
00:05:07He hooked an outside pitch.
00:05:09Hit that ball in the air to right.
00:05:10Just not with much authority.
00:05:12Jose Batista now at the plate.
00:05:16Batista hitting better against right-handers this year.
00:05:19So some reverse splits there.
00:05:28In there for strike one.
00:05:31Two outs and one in scoring position.
00:05:36Next one off the plate inside.
00:05:39And the count is one and one.
00:05:47And a pitch.
00:05:50Lifted in the air right center field.
00:05:52Jackson.
00:05:53Couple of steps in.
00:05:54No trouble here.
00:05:55Puts it away for the out.
00:05:57And that is the inning.
00:05:59Blue Jays held in check.
00:06:00And now the Yankees will see what they can do.
00:06:03No score.
00:06:04It's Major League Baseball and it's on the show.
00:06:13Bottom of the first and today on the hill, David Wells.
00:06:17Chris, it's a little more common these days, but still, he's a strikeout per inning type of guy.
00:06:23Well, I hear you about the strikeouts.
00:06:25A lot more guys striking out today.
00:06:27But when you consider having the ability to get that strikeout, particularly when you need it.
00:06:31A man on third, less than two outs.
00:06:33Situations where, yeah, maybe you're not a real high strikeout guy, but just knowing you have the swing and miss
00:06:39stuff in a big spot, I think it's real critical and he's got it.
00:06:50And he's down 0-2 as he swings through it.
00:06:56The wind of the pitch.
00:06:59That misses the zone.
00:07:00Ball one.
00:07:01That's a really good job of laying off the 0-2 high fastball.
00:07:06It's going to make that pitcher really have to respect this hitter, even though he's behind in the count.
00:07:10Makes the grab.
00:07:11One away.
00:07:17And timed out to check out the New York Yankees lineup.
00:07:36Joe DiMaggio stepping in now for the Yankees.
00:07:46In there and it's 0-1.
00:07:48Out there on the mound, he's setting the tone early with the fastball.
00:07:5298 miles per hour up on the scoreboard.
00:08:04Next offering misses, and that is ball one.
00:08:23And now the lefty, in the air, right field, pulls it down and there's two gone.
00:08:36Batting third.
00:08:37Next is the designated hitter, Babe Ruth.
00:08:44He's a left-handed batter who still comes up with good contact and a good average against left-handed pitchers.
00:08:53All right, so you hit lefty.
00:08:55Left-handers, they just seem to have different arm angles.
00:09:01So to keep that front shoulder in there and really discipline yourself can be tough sometimes.
00:09:05But the guys that do it well, man, I tip my cap to them every day.
00:09:11Two outs.
00:09:20Two outs.
00:09:22So a foul ball makes it one and two.
00:09:35Tap to first.
00:09:38The flip to the pitcher covering.
00:09:40Three up, three down.
00:09:41Inning over.
00:09:43Down in order.
00:09:44Goal to Yankees.
00:09:45We played an inning, no score.
00:09:56Top of the second, and now number 20.
00:10:00Leading off for the Blue Jays, the first baseman, number 20.
00:10:13The wide to kick the pitch.
00:10:16There's the strike.
00:10:17Well, triple digits on the gun.
00:10:19I know there are more guys that can reach that now than in the past, but it's still impressive to
00:10:24watch.
00:10:25Swing and a liner foul off to the right.
00:10:34The 0-2.
00:10:37And a foul ball.
00:10:38He stays alive.
00:10:47Here comes the pitch.
00:10:50That one fouled off.
00:10:59And a pitch.
00:11:02Whoa!
00:11:03They threw that one behind him.
00:11:05One.
00:11:07Hooray.
00:11:17Last minute.
00:11:24The one was fruits and vegetables and vegetables and vegetables.
00:11:27One is the one.
00:11:28One of the pieces.
00:11:30The one is the one.
00:11:38the pitch
00:11:41popped up foul territory behind the plate and a foul ball see how the catcher wanted that pitch
00:11:47up and in want to try to tie him up that's the one thing we're seeing that high fastball
00:11:51you have to get it up there because of how hitters have changed their swings
00:11:57the next offering misses now two and two
00:12:06right-hander kicks deals stays alive
00:12:18a two-two
00:12:23sliced hard but foul quite the matchup we're seeing here six foul balls in this at bat alone
00:12:29really making them work out there the wind in the pitch and there's a foul ball
00:12:43the pitch
00:12:46ripped but a curls foul
00:12:58next one just misses and it's three and two
00:13:15righty delivers got him swinging one away
00:13:21fell that high four seam fastball it's become such a staple as a strikeout pitch over the years and
00:13:27what's so tough as a hitter is that you see it extremely well the problem is the velocity at
00:13:32spin rate just happens to jump by you you expand your zone you don't stay tall on the back side
00:13:38and you're really not even able to make contact if you do many times it's a pop-up george bell
00:13:43takes one off the outside here
00:13:57next offering is in for a strike looks like a really good fastball today you can hear that
00:14:02catcher's mitt popping looking forward to hearing a lot of that one in this one
00:14:08no score here in the second
00:14:15that one catches the zone that strike two
00:14:18love how vocal the umpire is today
00:14:21no doubt in the hitter's mind catcher's mind and even the pitcher's mind
00:14:26as to the conviction in the call whips it to first two up two down on the top of the
00:14:31second
00:14:34batting seven the right fielder number 39 two outs base is empty number 39 next up for the blue jays
00:14:44he's a guy chris's highlights include some of the best throws from the outfield that you
00:14:49will ever see definitely one of the best arms of the sport first pitch and he just misses
00:14:58the 1-0
00:15:01out in front with the swing and that is strike one
00:15:10so now one and two
00:15:12and the one two misses to even the count
00:15:21well he might have to look for a different put away pitch right here two two he's already seen
00:15:26the curveball a couple of times in this at bat so might have it timed up and ready for it
00:15:32next offering upstairs wow that's a tough pitch to lay off
00:15:43kick sandios right through there got him down on strikes and he knew it blue jays go down in order
00:15:52we'll go to the bottom of the second no score this is my grind it's what i'm committed to if
00:15:58it don't
00:15:59sound good maybe back here at the ballpark here's some real power at the plate leading off
00:16:05for the yankee goes without saying one of the biggest legends of the game here in gehrig
00:16:10probably the greatest first baseman of all time first pitch just misses
00:16:17left-hand hitter waits
00:16:20swings through that one in 1929 gehrig slashed 300 431 584 not too bad right well that was maybe
00:16:30the worst season of his career tells you about what kind of player he was
00:16:37next pitch misses and it's two and one
00:16:45so
00:16:53so
00:16:53so
00:16:54so
00:16:54so
00:17:15And here we go.
00:17:23And here it comes.
00:17:26Got him looking.
00:17:27Now one away.
00:17:29So he gets the call and picks up the strikeout looking.
00:17:33Sometimes with a good hitter at the plate, he'll be the one to get the benefit of the doubt if
00:17:36he lays off on a close pitch like that.
00:17:39But just not right there.
00:17:40Strike zone definitely expand a little bit with two strikes.
00:17:44Mickey Mantle stepping in now for the Yankees.
00:17:52First pitch doesn't find the zone.
00:17:55And Gehrig only drove in 125 runs in that subpar 1929 season.
00:18:01This guy was an RBI machine.
00:18:03He held the record for career Grand Slams as well for 75 years.
00:18:09Next pitch downstairs.
00:18:10Ball two.
00:18:18Out to short.
00:18:21Zips it across.
00:18:22Already two out here in the home half of inning number two.
00:18:28Batting six.
00:18:29The right fielder.
00:18:31Reggie.
00:18:33Jackson.
00:18:33Stepping in.
00:18:34Reggie Jackson.
00:18:35Big time power.
00:18:38This lineup's going to have to find a way to make him work a little harder out there on the
00:18:42mound.
00:18:42I mean, he is just mowing them down.
00:18:44He's settling in.
00:18:45You've got to make him uncomfortable.
00:18:47Maybe step out of the box.
00:18:48Call timeout.
00:18:49Do whatever it takes.
00:18:51The lefty.
00:18:52The 1-0.
00:18:54Late with the swing there.
00:18:57Nothing.
00:18:58Nothing here in the bottom of the second.
00:19:03Ground ball right side.
00:19:06And that is the inning.
00:19:10So the Yanks go in order.
00:19:13We'll move to the third with no score.
00:19:15Yeah, I do.
00:19:15I do it all.
00:19:17We ain't talking money.
00:19:19We ain't talking.
00:19:20It's the game.
00:19:22Yeah.
00:19:28Leading off for the Blue Jays.
00:19:30The center fielder.
00:19:31Number 15.
00:19:41The right hander back to work.
00:19:44Now a drag bunt.
00:19:45Third base side.
00:19:48And he beats the throw.
00:19:50Shows off the wheels right there.
00:19:52An infield single.
00:19:53It doesn't surprise anyone when he gets on base by dropping down a bond.
00:19:57I mean, this is just the latest example of him using his speed to his advantage and showing off his
00:20:03skills with the bat.
00:20:04That was very nice.
00:20:06Next to hit, Russell Martin.
00:20:08Next offering is down low.
00:20:11And it's 1-0.
00:20:25And that one missing low.
00:20:27Good speed on the base pass.
00:20:29He handles the bat very well.
00:20:31I wouldn't be surprised if the skipper puts on some type of hit and run or run and hit.
00:20:37Number 15 gets his lead at first with nobody out.
00:20:44Now this one is smoked down the left field line.
00:20:47And on its way of its fair.
00:20:49Out of here.
00:21:13There he got a splitter that he was able to handle.
00:21:16Allowed that pitch to travel a little bit deeper.
00:21:19And when it was time to commit, his hands exploded through the zone.
00:21:33First pitch, and that's in for a strike.
00:21:35First pitch, and that's in for a strike.
00:21:47Kicks and fires.
00:21:50And it's fouled away.
00:21:53The real threats are coming up.
00:21:55Already giving up a home run in this inning.
00:21:57It's going to really have to bear down.
00:22:00The 0-2.
00:22:03In the air, center field.
00:22:07DiMaggio makes the catch.
00:22:09One down.
00:22:16So up next for Toronto, Tony Fernandez.
00:22:20You talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond.
00:22:24And this guy is at the top of the list.
00:22:31And he swings and misses, and it's nothing in one.
00:22:34Yeah, we go beyond just the fielding percentage and what it looks like, but the ability to have a range
00:22:41and close holes that are normally there against an average defender.
00:22:46But this guy is special, and you can see it in his first step quickness.
00:22:521-1 now.
00:22:55And a swing and a miss.
00:22:57Boogan, the one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump, and defense shouldn't either.
00:23:03Hitting-wise, you can struggle.
00:23:05You can lose your mechanics.
00:23:06But the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you're talented in that
00:23:12way.
00:23:12And this is what this guy does.
00:23:14Drops in for a hit.
00:23:16Couldn't run it down.
00:23:17Round second, digging for third.
00:23:20And he's got himself a triple.
00:23:24Good job of just putting the ball in play with two strikes.
00:23:27Man, I love the hustle out of the box right there to make that triple happen.
00:23:31And just an absolute laser into the opposite field gap.
00:23:35He was digging hard the entire way.
00:23:43So, one gone with a runner at third.
00:23:45Carlos Delgado next up for the Blue Jays.
00:23:51And the first pitch misses for ball one.
00:24:05And a pitch.
00:24:07Good eye right there.
00:24:09Part of the order coming through now.
00:24:11And with one home run already in this inning, they're definitely looking to do some more damage.
00:24:16Runner on at third.
00:24:17One gone.
00:24:22Swing and a miss.
00:24:24And it's two and one.
00:24:43In the dirt.
00:24:44Runner stays put at third.
00:24:53Got him.
00:24:55And now two gone.
00:24:57Typically, that high fastball, if it's close to the top of the strike zone, a hitter who's prepared for it
00:25:03can get to it.
00:25:04But that one just had that little jump at the end, which indicates there's a good spin rate on it.
00:25:09And it didn't decrease in velocity as that hitter's internal clock would expect it to.
00:25:14And that's why you see the swing and miss.
00:25:17Now the Toronto four-hole hitter, Jose Batista.
00:25:200 for 1 with a fly out.
00:25:312 outs with a runner at third.
00:25:342 outs with a runner at third.
00:25:500 and 2 now.
00:25:52And a foul ball.
00:25:54He stays alive.
00:26:05And a swing and a miss.
00:26:07They limit the damage here.
00:26:09But two come across to score in the inning, courtesy of this two-run homer.
00:26:14And it's two zip.
00:26:24As we go to the last of the third, digging in, Alex Rodriguez.
00:26:32Well, on paper, it's favorable to have a fairly quick inning here with two of the three hitters he's set
00:26:37to face, batting from the left side.
00:26:40Same side he throws from.
00:26:42Well, he's so great about hitting the ball the other way.
00:26:45He gets those arms extended.
00:26:47So right there, just trying to straighten him up a little bit so he doesn't have as much outside plate
00:26:52coverage.
00:26:55That one ripped left field.
00:26:57Back there.
00:27:01Makes the catch up against the wall.
00:27:04Try to take on the wind and left field right there.
00:27:07Just a little too much traffic up in the air.
00:27:09Mother Nature won that one.
00:27:11It's hard to say, but I think that might be gone otherwise.
00:27:14At the plate.
00:27:16Number 31.
00:27:17This guy, one of the best defensive catchers going.
00:27:20You talk about framing, the ability to block, catch, and throw.
00:27:24He is at the top of the game.
00:27:26First pitch, and he just misses.
00:27:29Really good athlete.
00:27:30And many times we talk about, you know, the feet of infielders.
00:27:34This catcher as well.
00:27:35Really quick feet.
00:27:37He's able to recognize the pitch, see the trajectory, and get into a spot where he can block those balls
00:27:42and keep them from going to the backstop.
00:27:44Batting nut.
00:27:45The second baseman.
00:27:48Robinson.
00:27:50Two outs, base is empty.
00:27:52And next for New York, Robinson Cano.
00:27:55Good contact guy, good defender.
00:27:59Really impressive with the way he frames, the way that he sets it up, because sometimes those pitches are off
00:28:05the plate.
00:28:06But because he sets up and presents it so well, he steals strikes for his pitcher.
00:28:10And that's in there for strike one.
00:28:15The big lefty turns, kicks, deals.
00:28:18They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away.
00:28:24The one-to-one.
00:28:27Swing and a miss.
00:28:28He was late.
00:28:29Strike two.
00:28:35Next offering way off the plate.
00:28:38Had some cut action to it.
00:28:39Velocity pretty good on that slider.
00:28:41So far, moving the ball around nicely.
00:28:52The pitch.
00:28:55And a swing and a miss.
00:28:57And that's that.
00:29:00Yanks held in check.
00:29:02They're still down.
00:29:03It's 2-0.
00:29:12Out of the fourth.
00:29:14And now the first baseman.
00:29:15Number 20.
00:29:16Leading off for the Blue Jays.
00:29:18The first baseman.
00:29:20Number 20.
00:29:28And the pitch.
00:29:31Down the inside corner for a strike.
00:29:45That's outside.
00:29:47And now it's even one and one.
00:29:52The pitch.
00:29:55Late that time.
00:29:56And it's strike two.
00:29:57Just not able to catch up to that velocity.
00:30:03Next offering in the dirt.
00:30:04And the count's even at two.
00:30:10And down on strikes he goes.
00:30:12And that's the first out.
00:30:17Now the left fielder.
00:30:19George Bell.
00:30:20Left fielder.
00:30:21George Bell.
00:30:31In there for strike one.
00:30:41And he deals.
00:30:45And a base hit into right center field.
00:30:52You know I was watching his rounds during batting practice today.
00:30:55So impressed with his ability to let the ball travel.
00:30:58Go back up the middle and the other way.
00:31:00Sometimes when you step in the box during the game.
00:31:02You get a little anxious.
00:31:03And you get away from that.
00:31:04But so far I've seen him stay consistent with his pregame preparation.
00:31:08And here is number 39.
00:31:24At the belt and fires.
00:31:26And that skips in the dirt.
00:31:28Well with the amount of pitches that can end up in the dirt.
00:31:32A good secondary lead.
00:31:33Doesn't have to get away from the catcher.
00:31:35But if you're anticipating based off the trajectory.
00:31:38Get yourself into scoring position.
00:31:44Next one misses.
00:31:45Three balls and a strike.
00:31:57And a pitch.
00:31:59And now it's filled up.
00:32:01Back to back fastballs in.
00:32:02That last one called for a strike.
00:32:04Probably go away.
00:32:06But look for him to come back in there to try to finish you off.
00:32:10Bell.
00:32:10Stands at first with one out.
00:32:18This one in the air right field.
00:32:20And that is a foul ball.
00:32:30Here comes a pitch.
00:32:33And that one fouled off.
00:32:46Well struck left field.
00:32:48That one's deep.
00:32:50Makes the patch up against the wall.
00:32:54Well off the bat I thought for sure it had enough to get out of here.
00:32:57But that wind's kind of blowing in from left.
00:32:59And I think that's what made the difference.
00:33:08Man at first.
00:33:10And now the center fielder.
00:33:12Number 15.
00:33:21That's pitch downstairs.
00:33:23And that's ball one.
00:33:29Righty to the plate.
00:33:31On the ground out to short.
00:33:33To second.
00:33:34There's Cano.
00:33:35And that'll do it.
00:33:38One left for Toronto.
00:33:39As they're unable to add to their 2-0 lead.
00:33:52Welcome back.
00:33:53Bottom of the fourth.
00:33:54Now with the plate.
00:33:54Derek Jeter.
00:33:58It's good speed at the top of the order here.
00:33:59You want to get it on.
00:34:00See if you can get a stolen base.
00:34:02Maybe get around the bases.
00:34:04And pick up a run.
00:34:05That's through there for a strike.
00:34:07He's pitching well.
00:34:08But not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes.
00:34:11Usually doesn't work out for success.
00:34:13But he can never predict baseball.
00:34:22Next offering is in for a strike.
00:34:28But why to kick the pitch.
00:34:31Right side.
00:34:32Hard hit.
00:34:34One out in the bottom of the fourth.
00:34:36Well he's doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air.
00:34:39Let's the defense work behind him with another ground ball.
00:34:42Good execution.
00:34:45And now Joe.
00:34:47This guy one of the best contact men in the sport as well.
00:34:52Outstanding on the defensive end.
00:34:56Swing and a high fly ball.
00:34:58Pretty well struck right field.
00:35:00That's back there.
00:35:02Pulls it in on the warning track.
00:35:04It's a really good swing.
00:35:05He just didn't get quite enough of it to beat the wind.
00:35:08It's blowing in from right field right now.
00:35:13And next is the designated hitter.
00:35:15Babe Ruth.
00:35:16Kind of a throwback.
00:35:18No batting gloves.
00:35:24And first offering is fouled off.
00:35:34Two down.
00:35:35Nobody on.
00:35:37Swing and a miss.
00:35:38And that is strike two.
00:35:45The Yanks yet to pick up a hit here.
00:35:51The next pitch misses.
00:35:53Now one and two.
00:36:13Kicks and deals.
00:36:16Stays alive.
00:36:19I want to start that load a little bit sooner because of the good velo.
00:36:29Swing and a ground ball out to short.
00:36:31And it finds its way through for a hit.
00:36:34And that keeps the inning alive.
00:36:36Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle.
00:36:39We saw the numbers coming into the ball game.
00:36:42But all he's trying to do at this point is help his team win.
00:36:47So two down.
00:36:48Lou Gehrig stepping in now for the Yankees.
00:36:53First offering.
00:36:54And it just misses.
00:37:08Check on the runner.
00:37:09And he's back safely.
00:37:20And a 1-0.
00:37:21Just missed.
00:37:23Well, he looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at-bat strikeout.
00:37:31Two outs.
00:37:33There's the strike.
00:37:34Nasty 2-0 slider there for a strike.
00:37:36That tells you he's got a lot of confidence in that pitch.
00:37:42And now the lefty.
00:37:44That one missing inside.
00:37:46Here's an opportunity to do some damage and perhaps unlock this offense.
00:37:503-1 count.
00:37:51Be ready to turn on a fastball.
00:37:54The pitch.
00:37:563-2 now.
00:37:583-2.
00:37:58Two out.
00:37:59Runner on first.
00:38:00A lot of movement in the infield.
00:38:01Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch.
00:38:04Fouled off again.
00:38:06And it remains 3-2.
00:38:15Payoff pitch.
00:38:17Got him looking.
00:38:19And he's down on strikes for the second time today.
00:38:23One left for the Yankees.
00:38:24And they're down 2-0.
00:38:33We go to the top of the fifth.
00:38:35Here's the Toronto catcher.
00:38:36Russell Martin.
00:38:37Leading off of the P.J.
00:38:39The catcher.
00:38:40Russell.
00:38:42Martin.
00:38:43And a pitch.
00:38:46And that gets the inside corner for a strike.
00:38:48Man, this guy's got a great feel for his breaking ball today.
00:39:00Next offering is downstairs.
00:39:09And the righty deals.
00:39:11Good eye in that spot.
00:39:20And there's a ball.
00:39:35And it's filled up.
00:39:37Goodness.
00:39:37I think he just took the best pitch he's going to see in this at bat.
00:39:40You don't get many like that in that location.
00:39:42I don't know if you take that pitch against any pitcher out there on the mound.
00:39:47Righty delivers.
00:39:50And a foul ball.
00:39:51He stays alive.
00:40:02And he grounds one to the right side.
00:40:05Gathers.
00:40:06And throws to first.
00:40:08One away here in the fifth.
00:40:10Now batting.
00:40:11Number 12.
00:40:17And stepping in is the speedy number 12.
00:40:28In there and it's all in one.
00:40:34The pitch.
00:40:37And takes low for ball one.
00:40:40One out.
00:40:43The wind of the pitch.
00:40:46Swing and a miss as he was late that time.
00:40:49Now he just threw that fastball by him.
00:40:51Elevated.
00:40:52And if you're not looking up at that location.
00:40:54Very difficult to catch up to.
00:40:56Especially with that velocity.
00:40:59And there are two down.
00:41:01Oh, that's what he's looking for with the fastball above the zone.
00:41:04A swing and miss or weak contact.
00:41:06Number one.
00:41:07Shortstop.
00:41:08Tony.
00:41:10Fernandez.
00:41:10Tony Fernandez.
00:41:13Really good piece of hitting last time.
00:41:16Going to the opposite field.
00:41:27First pitch doesn't find the zone.
00:41:32And the right-hander deals.
00:41:36Upstairs.
00:41:45Called strike right there.
00:41:47I got two on the count.
00:41:55Swings and misses.
00:41:56And now two and two.
00:41:57Man, that's just a nasty splitter.
00:42:00Bottom falls out of it.
00:42:01You don't see a lot of guys throw that these days.
00:42:03But I tell you what.
00:42:04He's got a good one.
00:42:13And here's a 3-2.
00:42:16The punch out there.
00:42:18And good work there as he gets a 1-2-3.
00:42:21Down in order go the Blue Jays.
00:42:23They're up 2-0.
00:42:31And welcome back.
00:42:33Digging in is the switch-inning outfielder, Mickey Mantle.
00:42:36For the Yankees.
00:42:38The left fielder, Mickey.
00:42:40Wells.
00:42:41Back to work.
00:42:43And first offering is fouled off.
00:42:45Well, you can't really adjust your game plan for that last pitch.
00:42:48Guy hasn't thrown it very much.
00:42:49You've got to focus on the stuff that he's throwing up there most of the time.
00:42:55Oh, and two as he waves at that one.
00:42:57He got away with one there.
00:42:59But he knows he can't go into that spot very often against a guy like this.
00:43:04The pitch.
00:43:08There's one and two.
00:43:15And a swing and a miss.
00:43:17And there's one down.
00:43:19Got him out on the front foot.
00:43:21Couldn't keep the hands back long enough.
00:43:23And played right into the hands of the pitcher.
00:43:27Reggie Jackson.
00:43:35And up next for New York, Reggie Jackson.
00:43:42And the first pitch misses for ball one.
00:43:54And here it comes.
00:43:58Swing and a high fly ball to left.
00:44:00Pell gliding back.
00:44:02And there's two down.
00:44:07Now batting.
00:44:09Third baseman.
00:44:10Alex Rodriguez.
00:44:13Two outs.
00:44:13Bases empty.
00:44:14And stepping in for the Yankees.
00:44:16Alex Rodriguez.
00:44:18He's a guy who does it all.
00:44:24Well, on the mound.
00:44:26Very efficient.
00:44:27Able to produce an outcome.
00:44:28It seems like within the third or fourth pitch of just about every at bat.
00:44:37And now two and nothing.
00:44:38No, that pitch not even close.
00:44:40A 2-0 count now.
00:44:41He can't be over aggressive.
00:44:43He's got to make sure that pitch is right on a tee for him.
00:44:46The wind to kick the 2-0.
00:44:50In the air to left center.
00:44:53Tracks it down for the out.
00:44:55That is the inning.
00:44:571-2-3.
00:44:58Go the Yankees.
00:44:59They trail it here.
00:45:002-0.
00:45:08Top of the sixth inning.
00:45:10Now it's the Toronto designated hitter.
00:45:12Carlos Delgado.
00:45:14The designated hitter.
00:45:15Carlos Delgado.
00:45:24And the right hitter back to work.
00:45:27All one there.
00:45:29Action in the pen down there.
00:45:31Number 46.
00:45:32Up and throwing.
00:45:34Gomez.
00:45:34Getting loose as well.
00:45:44And there's the strike.
00:45:46Well, that's today's style of baseball right there, right?
00:45:48Big time velo on the bump and big time pop at the plate.
00:45:52The next offering misses.
00:45:54And the count 2-1.
00:45:58The wind in the pitch.
00:46:01Sliced hard, but fouled down the left side.
00:46:15Swag and a miss.
00:46:16The velocity blasted it right past him.
00:46:22Jose Batista next up for the Blue Jays.
00:46:26Jose Batista.
00:46:27Almost 100 pitches through five and a third innings.
00:46:31I'm thinking he's probably done in the next couple of batters.
00:46:36Pitch misses inside.
00:46:38Yeah, that's ball one.
00:46:44Inside corner, and that's called a strike.
00:46:59Ball to strike.
00:47:03Late swing.
00:47:04Fouled off.
00:47:16Got him.
00:47:17Two quick outs to open the top of the sixth.
00:47:21Back-to-back strikeouts to start the frame, and that's now three in a row.
00:47:25Yeah, he's really settling in and getting a feel for his pitches, throwing them where he wants to right now.
00:47:31So we'll see how long he can keep this streak going.
00:47:39Number 20 in the box with two gone, and it takes a look at a called strike.
00:47:54Next pitch misses inside.
00:47:56One and one.
00:48:03Next offering is foul back.
00:48:14The other way, and foul ball.
00:48:24The one-two.
00:48:27That one the other way.
00:48:31Safe at first, and an infield single keeps the inning going.
00:48:51George Bell next up for the Blue Jays.
00:48:54One for two.
00:48:58Swing and a ball lifted left field, and that's the third out.
00:49:028-9-1 scheduled in the bottom of the sixth.
00:49:06Blue Jays two, and the Yankees nothing.
00:49:19Bottom of the sixth.
00:49:20Here's the Yankees catcher now.
00:49:22Number 31.
00:49:23Well, these fans definitely want to get involved in the game.
00:49:27All it's going to take is to get the leadoff man or even a base runner on.
00:49:33First offering misses the mark.
00:49:34All one, no strike.
00:49:46Left-hand hitter waits.
00:49:49Tried to get him to chase on the changeup that time.
00:49:52Two balls, no strike.
00:49:59On a line, base hit.
00:50:10Dominant performance for him today, Boog.
00:50:12Just two hits allowed so far.
00:50:14No runs across either, and he's had an answer for just about every hitter he's faced.
00:50:19So I don't think this hit is going to knock him off his stride too much.
00:50:23Now batting Robinson Cano.
00:50:27Now these guys definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here.
00:50:30Try to close that gap, but you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture
00:50:34that run from first,
00:50:35it feels like it's really important to getting back into this ballgame.
00:50:41First pitch just misses.
00:50:43Looking to get something going.
00:50:45This is the guy you want at the plate.
00:50:47He's been great for this team.
00:50:48He is a professional hitter.
00:50:52Next pitch misses.
00:50:54Two balls, no strikes.
00:50:59Left-hand batter waits.
00:51:02That's in for a strike.
00:51:03It really looks like these hitters have been in between with their timing today.
00:51:07Good fastball, excellent slider, but they've not...
00:51:10Swing, and this one's blasted.
00:51:13It's got a chance.
00:51:14Didn't quite have enough.
00:51:23Now batting.
00:51:24That's shortstop.
00:51:26So the batting order turns over, and now Derek Jeter.
00:51:36First pitch, and that's in for a strike.
00:51:39Good approach right there.
00:51:40You want to get something just a little higher that you can elevate.
00:51:43Stay out on that double play.
00:51:46Next offering is in for a strike.
00:51:48With two strikes.
00:51:49May see some movement over there at first base.
00:51:52Try to stay out of a double play here.
00:51:58Oh, now this one gets away at the plate.
00:52:01Runner holds.
00:52:02Count goes to one and two.
00:52:06The pitch.
00:52:08Swing and a miss.
00:52:09Struck him out.
00:52:10So he's gotten deep into this game.
00:52:13And at least so far, not showing a ton of signs of fatigue.
00:52:18Joe DiMaggio stepping in now for the Yankees.
00:52:22He's got the power, but great contact skills.
00:52:25One of the best contact hitters in the game.
00:52:27And first offering is fouled off.
00:52:38And a pitch.
00:52:40That one drifts inside.
00:52:57That hits the dirt.
00:52:58Two balls and a strike.
00:53:04And he deals.
00:53:07That one fouled off.
00:53:08Two and two.
00:53:20Kicks and fires.
00:53:22And a swing and a miss.
00:53:24That's the inning.
00:53:25The Yanks leave one.
00:53:27They trail things here.
00:53:29Two nothing.
00:53:29Same lines and playing the same game.
00:53:31The same way through the times.
00:53:32Can't things change?
00:53:33Realize the fame games.
00:53:34The demise you're playing.
00:53:35Jane's got to find a new lane for the drive.
00:53:37Hey.
00:53:38Word to Niles.
00:53:39I'm shooting for the stars.
00:53:40Unlabel with them boys.
00:53:41Winning against all.
00:53:43Welcome back.
00:53:44We're in the seventh.
00:53:45We have a new pitcher on the mound.
00:53:46Number 46.
00:53:48It's his job to keep his team in the game.
00:53:52Now it's the right fielder.
00:53:53Number 39.
00:53:55Leading off for the Blue Jays.
00:53:57The right fielder.
00:53:58Number 39.
00:54:00The wind to the pitch.
00:54:03And that's outside.
00:54:12Swings and misses.
00:54:14And the count one and one.
00:54:21That one missed.
00:54:26The big lefty turns, kicks, deals.
00:54:30And another ball.
00:54:31This is a really good feeling for a hitter.
00:54:34At this point in the ball game, you know that they don't want to walk you.
00:54:37So you're going to get a pitch to hit.
00:54:39You just better not miss it.
00:54:41The 3-1.
00:54:44That one catches the corner for a strike.
00:54:47Camer's ball.
00:54:483-2.
00:54:54Swing and a foul back.
00:54:55That's out of play.
00:55:07Swing and a miss.
00:55:08Struck him out.
00:55:09And one away.
00:55:11Oh, nothing too fancy on the strikeout pitch right there.
00:55:13Just a low 90s fastball.
00:55:14And I'm not sure he was trying to challenge him.
00:55:16But that's pretty much what happened.
00:55:18Very hittable location.
00:55:19But he found a way to just get it by him.
00:55:26Number 15.
00:55:27The next to hit.
00:55:32And that's in there for strike one.
00:55:49Up the middle.
00:55:50Cano collects it.
00:55:52Got him on the off-balance throw.
00:55:54Two up, two down.
00:55:58First of all, that's just a nice job to even get to that ball.
00:56:01And then even more impressive was the throw.
00:56:03Off-balance, had to try to, in the air, get his shoulders turned and make a strong throw.
00:56:09Does show off the strength of the arm.
00:56:11We're usually used to seeing that kind of arm strength from the shortstop.
00:56:14Here's the catcher, Russell Martin.
00:56:16His two-run homer back in the third was an important swing of the bat in this one.
00:56:20Yeah, there's no doubt he helped set the tone fairly early.
00:56:22And certainly part of the reason why they've got the lead right now.
00:56:29First pitch doesn't find the zone.
00:56:46Next offering is fouled back.
00:56:55And a 1-1.
00:56:58Swing and a miss as he was late.
00:57:00First ball, two strikes.
00:57:07Comes up empty as he chases that one in the dirt.
00:57:10That completes the strikeout and that'll do it.
00:57:12Midway in inning number seven and it's time to stretch.
00:57:16Blue Jays two and the Yankees nothing.
00:57:22Bottom of the seventh and now the DH, Babe Ruth.
00:57:26This is a guy you got to keep an eye on when he digs in.
00:57:29Definitely been known to drop a drag bunt from time to time.
00:57:32And he's pretty good at it, Chris.
00:57:34Yeah, and he creates a sense of urgency for the defense because of the speed, because of the ability to
00:57:40put down that bunt.
00:57:41Blue Jays bullpen with some action.
00:57:43Number 31, the hard-throwing righty is up and loosening.
00:57:46Number 44, warming up as well.
00:57:54Now you see even sluggers from time to time try and use the bunt really as a way to beat
00:58:00the shift.
00:58:05But why the kick, the pitch.
00:58:08That catches the corner.
00:58:22The pitch.
00:58:27Now in this three-ball count, down in the ball game, you've got to be very selective.
00:58:31Take your walk if they'll give it to you.
00:58:34And a pitch.
00:58:51That one pushed foul out of play off to the left.
00:59:03Swing and a miss, and he got him.
00:59:05Picks up strikeout number seven.
00:59:07A big first out here in the seventh via the punch out.
00:59:11Yeah, it just does so much to change the outlook of an important inning like this.
00:59:15I mean, you've got the leadoff hitter so critical in setting the table when you've got a tight game like
00:59:20this.
00:59:20So a strikeout really puts them on their heels.
00:59:27Now here's the Yankees clean-up hitter, Lou Gehrig, who's 0 for 2 with a pair of strikeouts.
00:59:33And the first pitch misses for ball one.
00:59:36The Yankees looking to rally.
00:59:49Next offering misses, and it's 2-0.
00:59:52Struggled a little bit in this one.
00:59:54Couple of strikeouts earlier, but doing a much better job in this at bat to get ahead and find a
00:59:59good hitter's count at 2-0.
01:00:01The 2-0 is in for a strike.
01:00:03You get to this part of the order.
01:00:05Yeah, there's some pop there, but more likely there are some base hits.
01:00:09So very important to be patient.
01:00:11Let the pitcher walk you, if he will.
01:00:15And a pitch.
01:00:19Swing and a miss, and he is down on strikes for the third straight at bat.
01:00:24Well, he's showing some pretty dominating stuff out there in this one, not just in terms of swing and miss,
01:00:29but also in terms of command.
01:00:30All the strikeouts, they kind of speak for themselves, but when you don't walk anyone, you're demonstrating that you have
01:00:37the confidence in your abilities to truly go right after opposing batters.
01:00:45Two outs, space is empty.
01:00:47Now, here's the switch hitting power threat, Mickey Mantle.
01:00:52They say he went.
01:00:54He went.
01:01:07Next pitch misses outside, and it's one and one.
01:01:24Kicks and deals.
01:01:27Swing and a miss, one and two.
01:01:29Spin rates outstanding on that high fastball.
01:01:32Really tough to hit.
01:01:35Next offering is fouled back.
01:01:46Down to the dirt, swing and a miss.
01:01:50In time.
01:01:51So the drop third strike doesn't hurt him, and that's that.
01:01:54We look ahead to inning number eight.
01:01:56Blue Jays two, and the Yankees nothing.
01:02:02New inning getting started.
01:02:04Now, here's the leadoff man for the Blue Jays, number 12.
01:02:08The second baseman, number 12.
01:02:11Here comes a pitch.
01:02:13And first offering is fouled off.
01:02:25Now one and one.
01:02:34Next offering is down low.
01:02:43And a foul ball.
01:02:46Really great change of speeds.
01:02:48He goes off the off speed to the fastball,
01:02:50and the hitter doesn't know what's coming next.
01:02:57Swing and a hard hit liner up the middle of the base hit,
01:03:00and the leadoff man aboard.
01:03:03Right there, he does a great job of staying in the big part of the field.
01:03:06Man, there are a lot of hits there.
01:03:10Tony Fernandez.
01:03:18Tony Fernandez digs in now.
01:03:21A switch hitter batting right.
01:03:25That one's in there, all and one.
01:03:40At the belt and fires.
01:03:42And it's even up.
01:03:43This is one of those situations defensively where you can't try to do too much.
01:03:47You've got to make sure that you feel the ball cleanly and get one out first.
01:03:51It's going to be tough to get two with this kind of speed in the batter's box.
01:03:55Number 12.
01:03:56Aboard here at first with nobody out.
01:04:02Next offering is in for a strike.
01:04:11Move to first, and he's backstanding.
01:04:25The pitch.
01:04:26Runner on the goal.
01:04:27Next offering is foul back.
01:04:39And the pitch.
01:04:42Ground ball right side.
01:04:43Could be two.
01:04:44Garrett to second.
01:04:45Back to first.
01:04:46Double play.
01:04:52For me, that's one of the toughest double plays to turn on the infield.
01:04:55The first baseman has to get inside, create a throwing lane to hit that middle infielder
01:05:00to start the double play, and then from there, completing it back to first.
01:05:04Really good job all the way around.
01:05:14And next for Toronto, Carlos Delgado.
01:05:17This guy has turned into a beast.
01:05:21In there for strike one.
01:05:34Two down, nobody on.
01:05:37And that's outside.
01:05:43And now the lefty.
01:05:46Going to count one and two.
01:05:47Been a solid inning so far in relief.
01:05:49Getting them through this inning.
01:05:50Only down two could give their lineup a real opportunity to just grind their way back into
01:05:55this game.
01:05:56Oh, this one high and deep.
01:05:58Way back there.
01:05:59Fielding for the wall.
01:06:00Ball makes the catch and foul ground.
01:06:14Bottom of the inning.
01:06:15And stepping in for the Yankees, Reggie Jackson.
01:06:18Leading off for the Yankees.
01:06:21The right fielder.
01:06:22Reggie Jackson.
01:06:25Wells back to work.
01:06:28Pitch misses there.
01:06:301-0.
01:06:36Good eye right there.
01:06:422-0.
01:06:46And that one ripped to left.
01:06:48Just inside the line.
01:06:50And it's down for a knock.
01:06:51Around first.
01:06:52Digging for two.
01:06:54And the bottom of the eighth starts with a double.
01:06:57Love how he let that ball travel.
01:06:59Trusted his hands.
01:07:00Nice job of going the other way.
01:07:08Now the third baseman, Alex Rodriguez.
01:07:11Now batting.
01:07:12Third baseman, Alex Rodriguez.
01:07:16First pitch.
01:07:17And he just misses.
01:07:19Hitter's got some good opposite field power.
01:07:21What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base
01:07:26runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on
01:07:31that base hit.
01:07:32Next one misses.
01:07:34Yeah, that's ball two.
01:07:40Yeah, there's the strike.
01:07:55That to right.
01:07:56Number 39 gets there.
01:07:58He's under it.
01:08:00Halls it in.
01:08:00And there's one away.
01:08:02Wide throw.
01:08:02And it gets away.
01:08:03The run comes in from second.
01:08:06And now they trail by one.
01:08:08Well, that right there is a pretty clear example of why making a clean on-target throw back into
01:08:13the infield is so critical.
01:08:15But so many times it's easily overlooked.
01:08:17You can't be careless about it as an outfielder.
01:08:20It doesn't matter if you're throwing to a base or a cutoff man.
01:08:22You have to give them something that they can handle.
01:08:25That cost them a run as a result.
01:08:34Dwayne Ward gets the ball now.
01:08:37And this guy can bring it velocity-wise.
01:08:40Dwayne Ward.
01:08:50And next for New York, number 31.
01:08:54The battle.
01:08:56Number 31.
01:09:00Next pitch downstairs.
01:09:01Ball one.
01:09:15Right-handed reliever.
01:09:17That's off the mark.
01:09:19And the count is 2-0.
01:09:34Looking to get the tying run on base.
01:09:37And a foul ball.
01:09:49And a 2-1 on the way.
01:09:52Out towards left center.
01:09:56Bell makes the play.
01:09:57And there's two down.
01:10:03Now batting.
01:10:04Second baseman.
01:10:06Robinson.
01:10:07And up next for New York.
01:10:09Robinson Cano.
01:10:10He gets a shot right here against the righty.
01:10:12And he is elite against right-handed pitching.
01:10:16The contact.
01:10:16The average.
01:10:18And delivers the slug.
01:10:20First off ring.
01:10:22Misses the mark.
01:10:30Got it started a little too early.
01:10:32Strike one.
01:10:47The 1-1 is cut on and missed at a pitch upstairs.
01:10:57And a ball evens the count.
01:11:08Next offering is fouled back.
01:11:24Swing and a miss.
01:11:25And he's down on strikes.
01:11:28That ends the inning.
01:11:30Ninth inning coming up.
01:11:31Blue Jays 2.
01:11:32And the Yankees 1.
01:11:43All set for the start of the inning.
01:11:45And now the Toronto cleanup hitter.
01:11:47Jose Batista.
01:11:53The wind and the pitch.
01:11:57Inside.
01:11:58Just missed.
01:12:07The 1-0.
01:12:10Rolled softly.
01:12:11But that goes foul.
01:12:19The lefty ready.
01:12:21And a 1-1.
01:12:22Just off the inside edge.
01:12:29The pitch.
01:12:32And a foul ball.
01:12:41And a pitch.
01:12:44And a foul ball.
01:12:45And fouled off.
01:12:53And here it comes.
01:12:57High fly ball.
01:12:59Right field.
01:13:02Pulls it down and he makes the catch.
01:13:04And there's one down.
01:13:09Now battle.
01:13:11Number 20.
01:13:14Number 20.
01:13:16Getting ready to hit.
01:13:30In the air.
01:13:31Pretty deep out to center field.
01:13:33DiMaggio gets under it.
01:13:34Puts the squeeze on it.
01:13:36Out.
01:13:37Number 2.
01:13:42Up next to the Blue Jays.
01:13:45The left fielder.
01:13:46George.
01:13:47Bell.
01:13:48Two outs.
01:13:49Bases empty.
01:13:50Here's the left fielder.
01:13:51George Bell.
01:13:52One for three.
01:14:00Not looking like they'll be adding any insurance runs heading to the bottom of the ninth.
01:14:04So it's going to be on the bullpen to hold this lead.
01:14:11That one hit to right.
01:14:15Jackson makes the catch.
01:14:17And that'll do it.
01:14:18To the bottom of the ninth we go.
01:14:20Top of the order.
01:14:21Do up.
01:14:22Blue Jays two.
01:14:23And the Yankees one.
01:14:33New arm out of the bullpen.
01:14:35Tom Henke.
01:14:36And he'll work on holding this lead.
01:14:39Number 50.
01:14:42So digging in.
01:14:43Derek Jeter.
01:14:45And there's no doubt that they'll feed off the energy from this crowd.
01:14:49Right?
01:14:49I mean, yeah.
01:14:50I'd say the intensity level has gone up a few notches for sure.
01:14:53Trying to keep good speed off the bases.
01:14:59The tying run at the plate.
01:15:03There's a swing and a miss.
01:15:23Misses.
01:15:23Misses.
01:15:24And a count one and two.
01:15:25These home fans.
01:15:26They are making a lot of noise.
01:15:28Putting pressure on that pitcher out there.
01:15:31And a sling and a miss.
01:15:33And that is a big first out.
01:15:36Well, there's a small sigh of relief right there.
01:15:38I mean, just to keep that speed off the base pass.
01:15:40It's not just the pitcher.
01:15:41It's other guys that have to think about it.
01:15:43From your infielders.
01:15:45Have to think about that runner potentially stealing.
01:15:47But also be in position to make a play.
01:15:49As an outfielder.
01:15:50You're thinking about a base hit to the outfield.
01:15:52I've got to get to it quickly to try to keep this guy from taking an extra base.
01:15:56So, I think everyone just a little more relaxed that he didn't reach base.
01:16:09Crowd locked in right now.
01:16:11One run game here in the ninth.
01:16:16The next offering misses.
01:16:18And a count even one and one.
01:16:20One.
01:16:32Righty delivers.
01:16:37Laser.
01:16:38Base hit.
01:16:39And that puts the tying run on base.
01:16:44Well, that at bat had a lot of pressure riding on it.
01:16:47So, really great job coming through right there.
01:16:49It's got to feel good.
01:16:50I could watch base hits like that one all day long.
01:16:53And so could every hitting coach in the league.
01:16:55Just a nice line drive into center field.
01:16:57Now a huge at bat in this game coming up.
01:17:01Yeah, the batter now.
01:17:02Babe Ruth.
01:17:04Ground ball left side.
01:17:05Could be two.
01:17:06On the second.
01:17:07They get one.
01:17:08That's a double play.
01:17:09The ball game is over.
01:17:11Any day of the week, a pitcher will take two for one.
01:17:13Nice double play to get him out of the jam.
01:17:15They get the W.
01:17:16Way to go, guys.
01:17:18And your final score here today, 2-1.
01:17:21For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB The Show,
01:17:25I'm John Shambi saying so long.
01:17:34Yeah.
01:17:37Yeah.
01:17:39Yeah.
01:17:46Yeah.
01:17:52Yeah.
01:17:53Yeah.
01:17:54Yeah.
01:17:56Yeah.
01:18:00Wait.
