00:00:00Five power, you're not a threat, nothing to fight a bitch.
00:00:02But then we was heating up water to cleanse from it.
00:00:04I got three features, a preacher.
00:00:06I've heard a serpent, a sermon, seen an angel.
00:00:08I ain't got to talk.
00:00:13Hello and welcome to Oakland.
00:00:15We're at Ring Central Coliseum.
00:00:18We've got the American League Championship Series on the show.
00:00:22It's the New York Yankees going up against the Oakland Athletics.
00:00:26With Chris Singleton, I'm John Chompey.
00:00:32It's been a heck of a series so far, C.E.,
00:00:34and you have to figure that will only continue here in Game 6.
00:00:38You never want to be down 3-2,
00:00:40but we've seen plenty of teams come back from that,
00:00:43especially when they're playing the last two at home.
00:00:45So it's not an ideal scenario,
00:00:47but playing in your own stadium with your fans behind you
00:00:50probably makes it a little more doable.
00:00:52And on the flip side,
00:00:53you really don't want to let this go to a Game 7.
00:00:56When the crowd's even more fired up,
00:00:58the momentum's against you.
00:01:00They're looking to finish this thing today.
00:01:02First pitch coming your way next.
00:01:11Just about ready to go.
00:01:13And on the hill, the lefty, Vida Blue.
00:01:16Yeah, Booth, he went deep into the game last time.
00:01:18Only allowed one run, but he took a tough loss.
00:01:21Got to bounce back from those quickly
00:01:23and know that today's a new day.
00:01:25You can get that W.
00:01:28All right, ready to get underway.
00:01:30Now it's the shortstop, Phil Randolph.
00:01:35The pitch.
00:01:38And it's fouled away.
00:01:40First pitch, 7-0-5.
00:01:54Next offering is in for a strike.
00:01:57The fastball at the bottom of the zone
00:01:58can be very effective.
00:02:00Just got to keep it on the corners.
00:02:03Next offering way off the plate.
00:02:05The pitch.
00:02:22Well, he might have to look for a different
00:02:24put-away pitch right here, 2-2.
00:02:25He's already seen the curveball
00:02:27a couple of times in this at-bat,
00:02:29so might have it timed up and ready for it.
00:02:31Swag and the miss.
00:02:36The velocity blasted it right past him.
00:02:39Tell you what, those are the types of guys
00:02:41pitchers really like to punch out
00:02:42when they're on the mound,
00:02:43because if they get on,
00:02:45just the distraction that they create
00:02:47with all that speed over on the base pass,
00:02:50it can take away your focus from the next hitter,
00:02:52and that's the last thing you want to do
00:02:54is serve up a pitch that a guy hits over the fence,
00:02:57and it's a multi-run home run.
00:03:10And here it comes.
00:03:13And that's in there at the knees.
00:03:19And he deals.
00:03:24Stays alive.
00:03:27Stays alive.
00:03:32The wind of the pitch.
00:03:35And now 1 and 2.
00:03:41And now the lefty.
00:03:44And a foul ball.
00:03:46He stays alive.
00:03:46Stays alive.
00:03:47next pitch inside two and two this guy's a fun guy to watch taking it bad he just battles up
00:04:04there he doesn't take a pitch off at all makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there you
00:04:09can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away and download strikes he
00:04:14goes quick start here this evening two out top of the first well he should get some fist bumps when
00:04:20he gets back into the dugout because even though he strikes out he saw a lot of pitches and he
00:04:25battled and this is a long haul where you're trying to get that pitch count up as early as possible so
00:04:32gave the guys behind him an opportunity to see what's working for this pitcher or not but i tell
00:04:36you what it's a nice job right there got him on the off-balance throw and that is that we head to the
00:04:43bottom of the first bottom half of inning number one coming up no score after a half inning
00:04:49we go to the bottom of the first and going to the mound in this one for the yankees
00:04:58whitey fourth well last time out picked up the win didn't allow a run pitched extremely well
00:05:04it doesn't have to be perfect but if he can give another performance like last time out
00:05:08his team will be happy bottom of the first here's the left fielder ricky henderson
00:05:14singing you can't ask for anything more this guy checks all the boxes offensively he is the ultimate
00:05:19professional and it doesn't just start at game time it starts in the afternoon the way he prepares and
00:05:25gets ready for the ball game i tell you what his teammates feed off of the leadership that he shows
00:05:29on and off the field
00:05:31and a pitch
00:05:34now one and one that's where you want it's a good miss
00:05:40here comes a pitch
00:05:48and that one just missed off the outside edge
00:05:54guy like this can be tough you know he's not going to try to beat you with velocity but he's
00:05:58going to sink it he's going to change speeds and he's going to pitch backwards at times
00:06:02the throw to first one gone bottom half of the first
00:06:06time now to check out the a's lineup
00:06:12they're dealing with a top level arm of the mound so this figures to be a tough matchup for
00:06:18what's the key to the offense today singing i think when you got a guy that's this talented on
00:06:23the mound you got to find ways to disrupt his rhythm make him uncomfortable a little bit the
00:06:28guys that can handle the bat and perhaps you know blunt but for a base hit get him moving off the
00:06:33mound if you're in the box and he seems to be just in a flow step out mess up his timing somehow try to
00:06:39get his head a little bit and then when he does come in the zone you may only get one pitch you better
00:06:44not miss it
00:06:50next offering misses down and away and singing as a team you need to make the most of the very few
00:06:56opportunities he's going to give you right absolutely and you know if you don't get to
00:07:00guys like this a lot of times early once they really settle in it's going to be the later innings
00:07:05that they hand that ball over to a reliever if they do at all
00:07:12one down base is empty
00:07:17he swings and hits a fly ball center field makes the catch for the out
00:07:26batting third the first baseman
00:07:32two outs base is empty next to hit jimmy fox
00:07:42in there in its own one
00:07:49and a pitch
00:07:53and ball one
00:07:54and a pitch
00:08:03and delivers outside
00:08:14and that one upstairs he really committed to that fastball up at the top of the zone he knows that if
00:08:19he makes a mistake in the zone it gets hit hard by a power guy like this that's a nice miss right there
00:08:28the 3-1 in for a strike full count that fastball even though it's up that's the velocity you want to go
00:08:34after low 90s a lot better than trying to hit the high 90s
00:08:39line drive full extension makes the catch one of the most fun and exciting things you can do as an
00:08:46outfielder you lay out you make a diving catch you in the inning that gets the boys fired up in the dugout
00:08:53and welcome back second inning set to go now here's the yankees cleanup hitter luke eric
00:08:59the pitch
00:09:07foul ball there goes without saying one of the biggest legends of the game here in gehrig probably the
00:09:13greatest first baseman of all time and he'll one
00:09:19that's a strike in 1929 gehrig slashed 300 431 584 not too bad right well that was maybe the
00:09:28worst season of his career tells you about what kind of player he was
00:09:37and a swing and a miss and that's the first out just over matched on that fastball right there and
00:09:43it wasn't like he was set up for it by something off speed earlier in the impact just came right
00:09:48after him with three straight and he had no answer for it
00:09:57and up next for new york mickey mantle
00:10:04and first off ring is fouled off
00:10:14and he'll one
00:10:22and there's a ball
00:10:34and now it's even up
00:10:46second inning here no score
00:10:48and a swing and a miss down on strikes two out well he's really dialed in and this offense is
00:10:58gonna have to do something to try to break that rhythm maybe it's square around the bond step out
00:11:03of the box agitate him a little bit do something that just changes what's happening right now because
00:11:09at this pace it's gonna be a long game so you got to figure it out quickly
00:11:13now here is roger mack and first offering is fouled off
00:11:23the pitch
00:11:32the pitch
00:11:33foul ball
00:11:36no score here in the second
00:11:48on the ground right side throw over to fox third out that ends the frame
00:11:54down in order go to yankees we'll go to the bottom of the second no score
00:12:09bottom half of inning number two now it's the veteran outfielder reggie jackson
00:12:15he's not gonna get cheated up there no he's not he's looking to do damage with every swing he takes
00:12:21swing and a miss the one that looked like a case of deciding to swing no matter
00:12:29what that pitch was way up nice job of the pitcher knowing that this hitter's looking for something
00:12:34up that he can drive but he just expanded the zone to his advantage
00:12:41the lefty ready and a one one
00:12:45he swings and fouls one off
00:12:51the pitch
00:13:00got him and one away
00:13:03well that's always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead in the count
00:13:07and as a pitcher it really allows you to start expanding the zone guys become defensive and all
00:13:13of a sudden for the hitter that plate starts to get really wide and what happens is because of the
00:13:18pressure you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is and that's what
00:13:23leads to the strikeout next to hit mark mcguire and the first offering is not close
00:13:31they say
00:13:44They say he'll win.
00:13:58Next pitch is inside.
00:14:00Two balls and a strike.
00:14:08And another ball.
00:14:13A 3-1.
00:14:25Out into left center for a line drive base hit.
00:14:35He somehow got to that outside pitch and pulled it hard into the outfield.
00:14:39Not exactly what you're supposed to do with that kind of location,
00:14:42but you wouldn't know it by how the ball came off his back.
00:14:46Runner on it first with one gone.
00:14:48Here's the center fielder, Al Simmons.
00:14:51On the ground to the left.
00:14:53And it finds its way through for a hit.
00:14:56Mantle to third.
00:14:58Not in time.
00:14:59He's safe.
00:15:02Man, he used to absolutely turn it on that one.
00:15:04Ripped it down the line.
00:15:05Nice job of staying in his mechanics.
00:15:14Second and third.
00:15:15One gone.
00:15:16Striding to the plate now for Oakland.
00:15:18Frank Baker.
00:15:20It's interesting.
00:15:21He plays kind of a power spot defensively, but runs pretty well.
00:15:26So, when you're looking at that position, you're not expecting someone that has maybe above-average speed, but he does.
00:15:38And first off, Rangis fouled off.
00:15:41And I think that skill set really upgrades the position,
00:15:44because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better.
00:16:07At the belt and fires.
00:16:09Stays alive.
00:16:14McGuire at third.
00:16:17Simmons at second with one away.
00:16:24The next offering misses.
00:16:26One and two to Cal.
00:16:28What about him playing another position on defense?
00:16:30One that would require a little more range.
00:16:33Absolutely.
00:16:34And I think if push came to shove where they had to make a move during a game,
00:16:39it'd surprise a lot of people.
00:16:40You might even be able to put him in center field.
00:16:43Got him!
00:16:44Huge strikeout there.
00:16:46Certainly a strikeout situation right there.
00:16:48The infield playing back, and this pitcher has to step up and get the swing and miss.
00:16:53Really nice job of attacking the hitter at the plate.
00:16:56Pretty big two-out at bat coming up now.
00:16:59Bert Campaneras.
00:17:01Up next for the A's.
00:17:02And that's in there for strike one.
00:17:09And that's in there for strike one.
00:17:13Next pitch is popped up.
00:17:28Garrett settles underneath it.
00:17:30And here's the rookie catcher, Yogi Berry.
00:17:41And this is a guy that doesn't just impact the game defensively.
00:17:45They count on him to deliver offense.
00:17:48He's the first guy at the ballpark.
00:17:50He's got to study opposing hitters.
00:17:53He's got to get familiar with his starting pitcher for that night.
00:17:56And he's getting in the cage to take his swings.
00:17:59That's a whole lot.
00:18:00And so many times goes unnoticed.
00:18:03When you get ahead in the count, there's no doubt that the success rate goes up.
00:18:07And that's what he's been doing.
00:18:08It's made a big impact for him in recent games.
00:18:11Out towards left center.
00:18:16And Ricky Henderson, the grab.
00:18:18One down.
00:18:25Now batting Robinson Cano.
00:18:31First pitch, and that's in for a strike.
00:18:53Cold night tonight, Boog.
00:18:55And that's a pretty firm fastball right there.
00:18:57I tell you what, memories of getting jammed, they're creeping into my mind right now.
00:19:02Top of the third, no score.
00:19:08So now one and two.
00:19:14The wind of the pitch.
00:19:18Swing and a miss.
00:19:19Struck him out.
00:19:20That's out number two.
00:19:22Came inside with that two-strike fastball nicely and just punched him off
00:19:26the ball on the inside part of the play.
00:19:27Couldn't get around on it and catch it out front.
00:19:30Many times if you do, it's a foul ball.
00:19:32And you know a lot of pitchers, they really don't like working inside with two strikes
00:19:35because they do not want to hit that batter.
00:19:38And when they've got him up against the ropes, got to figure out a way to put him away.
00:19:42Did a nice job right there.
00:19:44Stepping in.
00:19:45Greg.
00:19:46First pitch is in the dirt.
00:19:47Left-hand hitter waits.
00:20:02That misses, and it's 2-0.
00:20:04And that one off the outside edge.
00:20:20And it's ball four.
00:20:34He missed down low.
00:20:36One of the things about that two-out walk, the base runner over at first base is going
00:20:39to have a very aggressive secondary lead.
00:20:41So a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two-out RBI, and those are the best.
00:20:47That is, if you are the offensive side of it.
00:20:54Random at the plate for the second time as he takes ball one.
00:21:12Next offering is in for a strike.
00:21:17Pulls out one foul.
00:21:26Looked like you got a little excited on that fastball.
00:21:28Got to think to yourself, you want to stay up the middle.
00:21:31That way, if you're a little bit early, you hit it out of the ballpark, you're a little late,
00:21:34opposite field not.
00:21:38And a pitch.
00:21:41Swing and a miss.
00:21:42And that is that.
00:21:45I think the key is arm action on the changeup.
00:21:47When you can sell it like a fastball, you drop the velocity, you get the swing and miss,
00:21:52and you walk off the field.
00:21:53As we go to the last of the third, digging in for Oakland, number two.
00:22:09The M.O. for him is contact.
00:22:12The guy who's going to deliver average, not a ton of power.
00:22:15He's looking to hit a line drive somewhere.
00:22:17Y'all, that's why it's a team.
00:22:18And when you look at a lineup, he's a great two-hole hitter,
00:22:21or a guy that you could put at the bottom to help turn that lineup over
00:22:24to have some momentum for your top hitters coming up to the plate.
00:22:29Next offering is in for a strike.
00:22:31Well, we call that key-holey.
00:22:33Even though it's right there and looks pretty good,
00:22:36if he doesn't love it, he's not going to swing that early in the count.
00:22:39Oh, why to kick the pitch?
00:22:48In the air to left center.
00:22:51Racing makes the catch!
00:22:54And a quick out, number one.
00:22:59The left field for number 24.
00:23:03Ricky.
00:23:04Ricky Henderson, up next for the A's.
00:23:06We talk about guys with good speed, and definitely he has it.
00:23:11But pushing the offensive side for just a second, Chris,
00:23:14it's the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most.
00:23:19Swings through that one.
00:23:21Oh, and a one.
00:23:22Well, he gets to balls that get by most people at that position.
00:23:27Just really impressive because there are certain times the ball comes off the bat,
00:23:30automatically that team that hit it thinks that they've got a base hit,
00:23:34or they may have extra bases, and he just takes it away.
00:23:38Hard hit left side.
00:23:40Oh, great grab on the dive.
00:23:42And very nicely done for the out.
00:23:44Great cat-like reflexes right there.
00:23:46Lays out, knocks the ball down, and then fires with that rocket arm
00:23:50all the way across the diamond.
00:23:52Man, put this guy in the mouth.
00:23:53Eddie Collins, up next for the A's.
00:23:59Hit it well, but flied out to the deepest part of the outfield his first time.
00:24:04Pitch misses inside, and that's ball one.
00:24:06The lefty, the 1-0.
00:24:20Just off the inside edge.
00:24:22Lissbatter has to understand his job is to get on base however he can.
00:24:27If he gets hit by a pitch, if he walks, maybe even singles,
00:24:30but you want to get the heart of the order up to the plate.
00:24:33The 2-0 is in for a strike.
00:24:50Two outs.
00:24:54And now it's filled up.
00:24:56He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here
00:24:58with three-hole hitter coming up if he's walked.
00:25:03And a swing and a miss, and that's that.
00:25:13And one, two, three, go the A's.
00:25:16Still no score.
00:25:25Back in Oakland, John Chomby with Chris Singleton,
00:25:28and set to lead off the fourth, Joe DiMaggio.
00:25:31Blue, back to work.
00:25:50And takes low for ball one.
00:25:52Now it's one and over.
00:25:56Kicks and fires.
00:25:57And there's a strike.
00:26:05The line of the pitch.
00:26:09And there's a foul ball.
00:26:18And he deals.
00:26:19And a foul ball.
00:26:23He stays alive.
00:26:31The one-two.
00:26:34And a swing and a miss.
00:26:36Lead-off hitter retired in the fourth.
00:26:38Quite the start to this game on the mound.
00:26:40Looking very dangerous to these hitters.
00:26:42Seven punch-outs already.
00:26:44So this lineup hasn't had much success trying to figure him out.
00:26:47I'm impressed with what we're seeing here.
00:26:50And here is Babe Ruth.
00:26:52Got to be careful with this guy.
00:26:54He's got power.
00:26:55He can untie it with one swing.
00:26:58He's kind of an outlier, especially when guys are consciously sacrificing contact to deliver power.
00:27:04Yeah, his swing is so good.
00:27:09It's in the zone a long time.
00:27:11He gets the barrel to it a lot.
00:27:12And that produces more base hits.
00:27:14That one's in there 0-1.
00:27:23The pitch.
00:27:26Way upstairs.
00:27:27And that is ball one.
00:27:35That one missed.
00:27:37When you look at the elite teams in the game right now, there is going to be the slug.
00:27:42No question about it.
00:27:43But the really good offensive teams combined slug with more contact, with less swing and miss.
00:27:51And here it comes.
00:27:55Stays alive.
00:27:56Yeah, and the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen, perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end.
00:28:20The 3-2 is off the outside edge, and that is ball four.
00:28:24What a battle.
00:28:25It's not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch.
00:28:28And I tell you what, he earned that walk.
00:28:31One of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins,
00:28:36the longer a played appearance goes for a batter, the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter.
00:28:42Garrett, batting with one down, takes a strike.
00:28:45Now moved to first.
00:28:51And he dives back in safely.
00:28:53All in one down.
00:29:04All in one down.
00:29:05Just missed.
00:29:06And Garrett can clean up for that famed murderer's row lineup as the Yankees were rolling off one World Series title after another.
00:29:15The kick in the pitch.
00:29:16Runner goes.
00:29:17That's in for a strike.
00:29:19Throw to second.
00:29:20Tag.
00:29:20And they got him.
00:29:21The Yankees still looking for their first hit in this one.
00:29:38Chases the changeup in the dirt.
00:29:43Up with it.
00:29:43Fires to first.
00:29:45That completes the strikeout.
00:29:46Inning over.
00:29:47On now to the bottom of the fourth.
00:29:49We're tied.
00:29:50Nothing, nothing.
00:29:51Bottom of the fourth.
00:29:55And now the first baseman, Jimmy Foxx.
00:29:58This guy makes great contact.
00:30:00One of the best in the game at putting bat on ball.
00:30:03He's got such quick hands.
00:30:05And he's gaining pitch recognition.
00:30:07That keeps him square to the plate.
00:30:08There's a good chance that his bat stays in the zone a long time.
00:30:12And that produces solid contact consistently.
00:30:15Kicks and deals.
00:30:17Jack Swing went around.
00:30:21And a count even at one.
00:30:23Garrick hit behind Babe Ruth in those murderers row days.
00:30:26They both have tons of power.
00:30:27But their home runs had much different trajectories.
00:30:34Next offering is in for a strike.
00:30:40And a pitch.
00:30:44And that skips in the dirt.
00:30:45While Ruth hit these high towering fly balls out of the park.
00:30:49Garrick just crushes line drives into the stands.
00:30:52I mean, he hit absolute bullets.
00:31:03And a pitch.
00:31:07Got him.
00:31:08And now one away.
00:31:10Man, that slider bearing in on your hands like that.
00:31:13It's just so tough to fight off.
00:31:14It's kind of like a cutter and just can eat you off.
00:31:17Saw you off.
00:31:18Tell you what.
00:31:19Hitters have nightmares about that pitch.
00:31:21Perfectly executed out there on the mound.
00:31:27Reggie Jackson up next for the A's.
00:31:33In there for strike one.
00:31:35Oh, one's a count.
00:31:46The pitch.
00:31:50And that one fouled off.
00:31:51Next offering is fouled back.
00:32:12And now the lefty.
00:32:13Left-hand batter waits.
00:32:27And a swing and a miss.
00:32:31That's his second strikeout.
00:32:33Back-to-back strikeouts to start the frame.
00:32:37And that's now three in a row.
00:32:38Yeah, he's really settling in and getting a feel for his pitches.
00:32:42Throwing them where he wants to right now.
00:32:44So, we'll see how long he can keep this streak going.
00:32:46McGuire in the box here lets that one go for a ball.
00:32:58The 1-0.
00:33:17The guy's going this good.
00:33:19He's retired seven in a row.
00:33:20You got to step out of the box.
00:33:22Fake butt.
00:33:22Do something to break it up.
00:33:24Swing and a miss as he was out front that time.
00:33:30The pitch.
00:33:33That misses the zone.
00:33:35It's two and two.
00:33:39Two down.
00:33:40Nobody on.
00:33:44Hold down.
00:33:44Three, two.
00:33:54And he walked him.
00:34:00Didn't miss by much right there.
00:34:02Just couldn't get the call off the inside corner.
00:34:05Al Simmons up next for the A's.
00:34:08Pitch misses inside.
00:34:21Ball one.
00:34:21Come on, let's get it.
00:34:48McGuire.
00:34:49Off the first with two away.
00:34:51Next offering is in for a strike.
00:34:58Generally, second, third time through the lineup.
00:35:00You want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them.
00:35:04Looks like he's doing a nice job of it.
00:35:06Next pitch just misses.
00:35:08And it's two and two.
00:35:09In the air, out towards left center.
00:35:19Mantle racing over to make the catch.
00:35:21The A's strand won.
00:35:23And we are still scoreless.
00:35:25We go to the top of the fifth.
00:35:35Here's some real power at the plate.
00:35:37Mickey Mantle.
00:35:38Late on that fastball.
00:35:50Love to see it.
00:35:51Power versus power right there.
00:35:55And he's down 0-2 as he swings through it.
00:35:58Just not able to catch up to that velocity.
00:36:04Next offering is fouled back.
00:36:06That hits the dirt.
00:36:18Going to count one and two.
00:36:200-2 count.
00:36:20You got the opportunity to expand the zone.
00:36:22Could get the chase there.
00:36:23Let's see what he comes back with next.
00:36:25The wind of the pitch.
00:36:31Tapped softly on the ground.
00:36:34Whips it to first on the run.
00:36:36And the leadoff man sat down in their half of the fifth.
00:36:40The right fielder, number nine.
00:36:42Roger Mack.
00:36:45And next for New York, Roger Mack.
00:36:55And that's in there for strike one.
00:36:58Well, he's been incredibly efficient in this one.
00:37:00First pitch strike percentage over 70%.
00:37:03That's well above league average.
00:37:05And that's what's allowed him to pitch well up until this point.
00:37:14That one drilled left field.
00:37:16And Ricky Henderson, the grab.
00:37:18Two up, two down.
00:37:20The batter.
00:37:21The catcher.
00:37:23Yogi.
00:37:24Jerry.
00:37:25And here's the catcher.
00:37:26Yogi.
00:37:27He's over one.
00:37:36First pitch.
00:37:37And that's in for a strike.
00:37:39Goodness.
00:37:39I think he just took the best pitch he's going to see in this at bat.
00:37:42You don't get many like that in that location.
00:37:45I don't know if you take that pitch against any pitcher out there on the mound.
00:37:51Sliced hard, but fouled down the left side.
00:37:55And that's pitches downstairs.
00:38:06His understanding of the strike zone, very impressive.
00:38:09If that was a very close 0-2 fastball.
00:38:12I just don't know how you take that.
00:38:17Next one is off the plate.
00:38:19Ball two.
00:38:20The Yankees hit list so far in the game.
00:38:26Swung on.
00:38:27Belted.
00:38:27That one's back.
00:38:30Pulls it in on the warning track.
00:38:32One, two, three.
00:38:35Go the Yankees.
00:38:36And we're still knotted at zero.
00:38:38We'll see a lot of things that they want.
00:38:40Things that they want to.
00:38:42Man, what you gonna do?
00:38:43What you gonna do?
00:38:45Man, what you gonna do?
00:38:46Bottom of the inning.
00:38:49Here's a speed threat.
00:38:50Frank Baker.
00:38:51He is quite an athlete.
00:38:53I mean, you look around the other sports.
00:38:55Basketball, football.
00:38:57You feel like he could thrive in one of those sports, too.
00:39:00Here comes a pitch.
00:39:04Swing and a ball popped up.
00:39:09Garrett makes the grab.
00:39:11One pitch and one out.
00:39:12Well, that was a pitch you gotta crush.
00:39:14Unbelievable that he missed it right there.
00:39:16And I'm telling you, he is gonna be frustrated with himself until his next at-bat.
00:39:22Well, on the mound, very efficient.
00:39:24Able to produce an outcome, it seems like, within the third or fourth pitch of just about every at-bat.
00:39:36That one the other way.
00:39:38Makes the catch for the second out.
00:39:41The catcher's number two.
00:39:43Mario.
00:39:46Missed.
00:39:47Two outs, space is empty.
00:39:49And now the catcher comes up to him.
00:39:51Mickey McCann.
00:39:59That one's in there 0-1.
00:40:01That one's in there 0-1.
00:40:01On the ground to third.
00:40:23In time to Gehrig.
00:40:25Oakland goes quietly.
00:40:27We're through five.
00:40:28And we still have no score.
00:40:34Welcome back.
00:40:35Top of the sixth inning.
00:40:36And stepping in for the Yankees.
00:40:38Robinson Cano.
00:40:39Well, on paper, it's favorable to have a fairly quick inning here with two of the three hitters he's set to face batting from the left side.
00:40:49Same side he throws from.
00:40:50And that one is lifted in the air.
00:40:55And Ricky Henderson, the grab.
00:41:02Now that third baseman.
00:41:05Greg.
00:41:06And up next for New York, Greg Nettles.
00:41:10Worked a walk in his first trip to the plate.
00:41:13When you talk about elite defensive third baseman, this guy is at the top of the list.
00:41:22Next pitch downstairs.
00:41:241-0.
00:41:25Stud.
00:41:25When you look at players like this, you play that hot corner.
00:41:28Got to be pretty courageous over there with the way balls come off the bat.
00:41:32That's the kind of guy that every year you expect to be in the all-star game and have a gold glove, if not a platinum glove.
00:41:42The wide of the pitch.
00:41:53And a count one and two.
00:42:06And a one-two misses to even the count.
00:42:09So what are the skills you look for that make a really good defensive third baseman that elite?
00:42:16One of the things I think about immediately are just the feet.
00:42:19Does he have good feet?
00:42:20Is he able to quickly react?
00:42:22And when you have good feet, you've got soft hands.
00:42:25And soft hand defenders are able to make tough plays look easy.
00:42:32Here's the Yankees leadoff hitter, Phil Random.
00:42:35On the ground out to short.
00:42:41Throw over to Fox.
00:42:43And that'll do it.
00:42:44So he's through six.
00:42:46No-hit innings now.
00:42:47Top of the order.
00:42:48Two up in the home half of the sixth.
00:42:50And we still have no score.
00:42:52Back here at the ballpark.
00:42:58Bottom of the sixth inning.
00:42:59And now, Ricky Henderson.
00:43:02Singing, he's a guy that covers both sides of the plate about as well as anyone in the sport.
00:43:07How difficult is that to do?
00:43:09Oh, just look at the back of my bubblegum card.
00:43:10You'll see how hard it is.
00:43:12These guys are great, man.
00:43:13They have the ability to look out there, but also to be able to turn on the inside pitch.
00:43:18Those that can really sharpen things on the outer half, those are the ones that become elite.
00:43:25Eddie Collins.
00:43:26Up next for the A's.
00:43:27In there, and it's 0-1.
00:43:38And it really looks like these hitters have been in between with their timing today.
00:43:42Good fastball, excellent slider, but they've not been able to commit to one velocity and stay there.
00:43:55But why did it kick the pitch?
00:43:57Rolled slowly to first.
00:44:01And foul ball.
00:44:08And a pitch.
00:44:12Out towards left center.
00:44:16Mantle pulls it down.
00:44:17Two-way down.
00:44:18The first baseman, number three, Jimmy.
00:44:28Two outs, base is empty.
00:44:30Next up for the A's, Jimmy Fox.
00:44:40First offering misses badly for ball one.
00:44:43You can expect this hitter to be looking for something on a tee.
00:44:46He can get up in the air and untie this ball game.
00:44:53Next pitch is outside.
00:44:55Two-a-count.
00:44:55Great hitter at the dish.
00:44:57If you're going to miss, you've got to miss outside the zone.
00:44:59When you miss inside the strike zone, you'll be asking the umpire for a new baseball.
00:45:03One-a-counted ball.
00:45:23And fouled off.
00:45:24The pitch.
00:45:36Cut on and miss.
00:45:37Struck him out.
00:45:38And good work there as he gets a one-two-three.
00:45:42Nothing doing there for the A's.
00:45:44Still no score.
00:45:58And welcome back.
00:45:59Top of inning number seven.
00:46:00And now it's going to be Joe DiMaggio.
00:46:07Blue.
00:46:08Back to work.
00:46:11And that one fouled off.
00:46:13Comes up empty on the swing.
00:46:260-2 now.
00:46:27Now.
00:46:33Comes up empty on the swing.
00:46:380-2 now.
00:46:43The line of the pitch.
00:46:46And that's down and away.
00:46:55The pitch.
00:46:59Sling and a miss.
00:47:00And he is down out.
00:47:01Strikes for the third straight at back.
00:47:04They've had a great plan of attack for him tonight.
00:47:06I mean, finding all the holes in his swing and his approach.
00:47:09Just frustrating for him up there.
00:47:11You strike out a guy three times in a game.
00:47:14I think that guy's got to go back and really study some video with his hitting coach.
00:47:17Figure out how they're beating him.
00:47:19Make this adjustment really quick.
00:47:20Because word will get around the league in a hurry.
00:47:23And the batter now.
00:47:24Babe Ruth.
00:47:26That hits the dirt.
00:47:27And that's ball one.
00:47:28You know, he's been so great today.
00:47:30Really just throwing whatever the catcher puts down.
00:47:32I mean, hasn't shaken off the catcher very much at all today.
00:47:38And he deals.
00:47:39And it's even up.
00:47:52And a 1-1.
00:47:56Line drive.
00:47:57Come on.
00:47:57And now, Lou Gehrig.
00:48:11Still no hits on the board.
00:48:13One out away from taking the no-no into the eighth.
00:48:19First offering.
00:48:20And it just misses.
00:48:23The Yanks yet to pick up a hit here.
00:48:27Next offering misses.
00:48:30And that's ball two.
00:48:32When you get to this part of the order.
00:48:34Yeah, there's some pop there.
00:48:35But more likely, there's some base hits.
00:48:38So very important to be patient.
00:48:39Let the pitcher walk you, if he will.
00:48:41Swing and a miss.
00:48:42And it's 2-1.
00:48:44And he really sells the changeup with that arm action.
00:48:49Next offering is downstairs.
00:48:52Well, these guys have had a hard time scoring in this one.
00:48:55The guy up there on the mound wants to keep attacking.
00:48:57Make sure that they don't get any confidence.
00:49:013-1.
00:49:02And he couldn't come up with it.
00:49:04Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there.
00:49:07Pretty much gifted in first base with a quick free pass.
00:49:11And next for New York, Mickey Mantle.
00:49:23First offering.
00:49:24Misses the mark.
00:49:25Two gone.
00:49:34The possible go-ahead run at first.
00:49:37Next offering is in for a strike.
00:49:44Good pitch to hit.
00:49:45On a tee.
00:49:46Up in the zone.
00:49:47I think he was looking for something else right there.
00:49:50Two outs.
00:49:52There's a strike.
00:49:53Well, you can't really adjust your game plan for that last pitch.
00:49:56Guy hasn't thrown it very much.
00:49:57You've got to focus on the stuff that he's throwing up there most of the time.
00:49:59Next one off the plate inside.
00:50:03The count now.
00:50:04Two and two.
00:50:16Kicks and fires.
00:50:17And a foul ball.
00:50:19He stays alive.
00:50:20And a foul ball.
00:50:22Next pitch misses.
00:50:37And the count's full.
00:50:38Three-two.
00:50:39Two out.
00:50:39Runner on first.
00:50:40A lot of movement in the infield.
00:50:42Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch.
00:50:44Garrett, the runner at first, with two gone.
00:50:52Foul off again.
00:50:54And it remains three and two.
00:51:06And a pitch.
00:51:08Swing and a miss.
00:51:09And he struck him out.
00:51:11That ends the frame.
00:51:13The Yankees lead one.
00:51:14And we are still scoreless.
00:51:23Back here in the East Bay, here's a big power threat.
00:51:27Reggie Jackson.
00:51:28The right hit.
00:51:30Reggie.
00:51:31And a pitch.
00:51:32Jackson.
00:51:35Strike on the outside corner.
00:51:37And it's all in one.
00:51:43They say it went.
00:51:57Next pitch misses way outside.
00:51:59Left hand hitter waits.
00:52:29Stays alive.
00:52:32Stays alive.
00:52:43And a pitch.
00:52:47And a foul ball.
00:52:48He stays alive.
00:52:49And here it comes.
00:52:58That one to first.
00:53:03Off-balance throw.
00:53:05In time.
00:53:06One away.
00:53:07Big timeout.
00:53:08Leading off the home seven.
00:53:09Identicated hitter.
00:53:11Mark McGuire.
00:53:14Mark McGuire.
00:53:16He's a big, strong guy.
00:53:17Can untie this game with one swing.
00:53:20First pitch, not close.
00:53:28Well, it's been a very impressive outing so far.
00:53:31His command has been a big part of it.
00:53:33Even when he misses, he misses outside the strike zone, which is exactly what a pitcher wants.
00:53:38The pitch.
00:53:56Ripped to third and caught!
00:54:05The center fielder, number seven, Al.
00:54:09Al Simmons, up next for the A's, one for two.
00:54:22And the first pitch misses for ball one.
00:54:25Kicks and deals.
00:54:32There's the strike.
00:54:42Next pitch misses inside, two and one.
00:54:45This one in the air right field.
00:54:54Mack makes the catch and that'll do it.
00:54:57A's go quickly and quietly there.
00:54:59And we're still knotted at zero.
00:55:09Ready to begin the eighth and stepping in for the Yankees, Roger Mack.
00:55:14The pitch.
00:55:22That's in for a strike.
00:55:26Some guys are just more confident.
00:55:27They can track that first pitch out of the hand of the pitcher.
00:55:30They don't care if they fall behind 0-1.
00:55:390-2 as he waves at that one.
00:55:41Well, it looks like he just got out of himself a little bit right there.
00:55:44He's looking for a ball in and to attack that pitch.
00:55:48Looks like a half-hearted swing.
00:55:49Next offering in the dirt.
00:55:51Now one and two.
00:55:52The lefty closing in on a hundred pitches.
00:55:54Ripped, but it curls foul.
00:55:59Well, that ball is hit pretty hard and sure had home run distance.
00:56:05But if you're the pitcher out there on the mound, you execute it.
00:56:08Just a long strike.
00:56:09You go after him and finish him off.
00:56:14Swing and a pop-up.
00:56:15Foul territory for the catcher.
00:56:17Going up on down.
00:56:18And up next for New York, Yogi Berry.
00:56:30This is where the no-hit bid really starts feeling real,
00:56:33but still a long ways to go.
00:56:40In there for strike one.
00:56:42I'm impressed that he went right after him on that first pitch.
00:56:45That's the key.
00:56:46Try to get ahead in the count, and you can play around a little bit more
00:56:49as the bat expands.
00:56:51You'll want.
00:56:54Just missed.
00:57:00Ball to strike.
00:57:04Out to short.
00:57:05Campanaris handles the chance.
00:57:07Sends it across the first.
00:57:09Two up, two down here in the top of the eighth.
00:57:16First pitch doesn't find the zone.
00:57:36Left-hand batter waits.
00:57:39That's inside.
00:57:40Boog.
00:57:41He never moved because he never had time to.
00:57:43But that kind of velocity, you'd prefer that pitcher work away.
00:57:52Next pitch is in the dirt.
00:57:53And that's ball three.
00:57:55And now the lefty.
00:58:06That just missed.
00:58:07He walked him on four pitches.
00:58:09You know, Boog, it's been said these guys are savages in the box.
00:58:12You can see it right there with such tight plate discipline.
00:58:15And that's in there for strike one.
00:58:31Oakland's bullpen has some movement.
00:58:34A left-hander appears to be getting ready.
00:58:48And a pitch.
00:58:51Perhaps not quite ready to hit.
00:58:53First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes.
00:58:56Now back is against the wall.
00:58:57He's going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly.
00:59:04Swing and a pop-up in foul ground.
00:59:07Nobody can get there and it's a foul ball.
00:59:09The pitch.
00:59:19The pitch.
00:59:21The count is one and two.
00:59:23On the ground right side.
00:59:40Fox takes it to the bag.
00:59:42Out number three.
00:59:43Eight down.
00:59:44One to go.
00:59:45Still a zero in the hits column.
00:59:47Home half of inning number eight straight ahead.
00:59:50And we still have no score.
00:59:56On to the bottom of the eighth.
00:59:58Striding to the plate now for Oakland.
01:00:00Frank Baker.
01:00:02It's good speed at the top of the order here.
01:00:04You want to get it on.
01:00:05See if you can get a stolen base.
01:00:07Maybe get around the bases and pick up a run.
01:00:10That first offering is fouled off.
01:00:18The pitch.
01:00:23Bounced up the middle.
01:00:24Fires to first on the run.
01:00:26One gone at the bottom of the eighth.
01:00:28And stepping in is the speedy Burt Campanaris.
01:00:40Feels like it's less common today that you see a guy like this.
01:00:45The speed component.
01:00:46The contact component.
01:00:48But lack of power.
01:00:49And he lays down a bunt.
01:00:51And he grabs it.
01:00:52Foul.
01:00:53The wind to the pitch.
01:01:10And a strike in there.
01:01:11The punch out there.
01:01:21Picks up strikeout number seven.
01:01:23Really love the pitch sequence right there.
01:01:25I'm telling you what.
01:01:26Pitcher and catcher on the same page right now.
01:01:28Here's the catcher.
01:01:41Number two.
01:01:47First pitch.
01:01:48And he just misses.
01:01:49Two outs.
01:02:04And a foul ball.
01:02:13The wind and the pitch.
01:02:19And a good eye there.
01:02:20Three one is on the way.
01:02:24High fly ball out of the left center field.
01:02:43High fly ball out of the left center field.
01:02:49DiMaggio racing over to make the catch.
01:02:51And the A's are gone in order.
01:02:53Still no score.
01:03:04We go to the ninth.
01:03:05And now the shortstop, Phil Random.
01:03:08You talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond.
01:03:12And this guy is at the top of the list.
01:03:17And first offering is fouled off.
01:03:26The pitch.
01:03:30And that drops in for a strike.
01:03:32You can only imagine the nerves that some of the defensive players have right now.
01:03:37You've got to have the mindset, I want the ball hit to me.
01:03:39But in front of that, you hope that he strikes the hitter out.
01:03:43They keep a big threat off the bases.
01:03:45Huge in a tie game like this.
01:03:48One out.
01:03:48First of all, that's just a nice job to even get to that ball.
01:03:51And then even more impressive was the throw.
01:03:54Off balance.
01:03:55Had to try to, in the air, get his shoulders turned and make a strong throw.
01:04:00Does show off the strength of the arm.
01:04:01We're usually used to seeing that kind of arm strength from the shortstop.
01:04:07DiMaggio at the plate now.
01:04:10That's ball one.
01:04:14The line of the pitch.
01:04:16That one lifted to left.
01:04:20Henderson under it.
01:04:22He's got it.
01:04:23There's two away.
01:04:25Just pulled off of it a little bit right there.
01:04:28That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed.
01:04:31If he does that, he's going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority
01:04:35instead of a fly out to left.
01:04:37And next is the designated hitter, Babe Ruth.
01:04:40First off ring, misses the block.
01:04:57In there, base hit.
01:05:00And the bid for history is gone.
01:05:03Here comes the throw.
01:05:04The throw to second is offline.
01:05:10Manager out of the dugout, and he's going to make a change.
01:05:16Vita Blue won't go any further tonight.
01:05:18And he was a tough knock to crack.
01:05:20Pretty stingy from start to finish.
01:05:23Back with a new arm after a quick break.
01:05:33Number 13 takes over on the mound.
01:05:35He'll try to strand the runner at second.
01:05:37Number 13.
01:05:40Go ahead, run on base.
01:05:52So now the Yankees clean-up hitter, Lou Gehrig.
01:05:57First pitch, and that's in for a strike.
01:05:59Oh, man.
01:06:00At the belt, and fires.
01:06:16Base hit!
01:06:18Runner around third.
01:06:20The throw home.
01:06:22It's offline.
01:06:23The run comes in, and it's 1-0.
01:06:26Well, there you go.
01:06:30The RBI machine.
01:06:32Another clutch run scoring at bat.
01:06:34Yeah, he's been so good in these situations.
01:06:37Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself.
01:06:42Two outs, runner at first.
01:06:44And stepping in for the Yankees, Mickey Mantle.
01:06:47Over to first, and he's safe.
01:06:48That hits the dirt, and that's ball one.
01:07:11Crowd locked in right now.
01:07:12One-run game here in the ninth.
01:07:18Next one misses, and the count is 2-0.
01:07:22Activity in the bullpen.
01:07:24Tim Hudson up and throwing.
01:07:26Now, two balls and a strike.
01:07:38Fooled on that pitch.
01:07:39Got a little anxious.
01:07:48In the dirt, blocked.
01:07:51The tag, and that's out number three.
01:07:53Inning over.
01:07:54So, one run in the inning on this base hit.
01:07:58And a home team down a run.
01:08:10All set for the bottom of the ninth.
01:08:12Now, here's the leadoff hitter for the A's, Ricky Henderson.
01:08:16These home fans, they are making a lot of noise,
01:08:20putting pressure on that pitcher out there.
01:08:22Yeah, the first offering is not close.
01:08:37One-run game, bottom nine.
01:08:41The pit behind with that swing.
01:08:43It's strike one.
01:08:44Trying to keep good speed off the bases.
01:08:47The tying run at the plate.
01:08:52Ready?
01:08:56Check swing.
01:09:10Now, we'll look down to first.
01:09:12No swing.
01:09:13Just held it back there.
01:09:17But why did it kick the pitch?
01:09:21Stays alive.
01:09:22Kicks and fires.
01:09:35Good eye right there.
01:09:37Now, in this three-ball count, down in the ball game,
01:09:39you've got to be very selective.
01:09:42Take your locket.
01:09:42They'll give it to you.
01:09:45And a pitch.
01:09:46Rolled over to third.
01:09:50Down the line.
01:09:51And it's foul.
01:10:01Fought off.
01:10:02Foul.
01:10:02Foul.
01:10:02And so, the lefty allows the leadoff free pass.
01:10:19That could jumpstart an offense that's really struggled to score in this one.
01:10:23Don't want to wake a team up with a free pass.
01:10:25Manager out of the dugout now.
01:10:27And it looks like we'll see a change on the mound.
01:10:30Whitey Ford.
01:10:31Won't go any further.
01:10:32Only two hits allowed for him.
01:10:34So, a great effort.
01:10:35And we'll be back after a quick break to tell you about the new arm.
01:10:38Mariano Rivera.
01:10:39Gets handed the rock out of the pen.
01:10:41And he'll do his best to hang on to this lead.
01:10:46They're not ready to go home quite yet.
01:10:48With a single base runner, because of all the power,
01:10:51they are dangerous to tie this thing up or take the lead.
01:10:56Digging in for Oakland.
01:10:57Eddie Collins.
01:10:59Oh, pretty good speed over there at first base.
01:11:01I think the pitcher's got to slow everything down.
01:11:04Hold the ball a little bit.
01:11:05Step off.
01:11:05Just try to break the rhythm and timing of a potential base dealer.
01:11:13Pickoff throw.
01:11:14Rickey dives back in.
01:11:15Rickey on the move.
01:11:30Pitch in for a strike.
01:11:32And that's a stolen base.
01:11:33Not even close.
01:11:35Well, in the postseason, I'd say we see more teams playing for one run,
01:11:39trying to apply some pressure.
01:11:40And that's exactly the case right here.
01:11:42Speed on the bases, put him in motion, and it worked out.
01:11:45Now time to execute in the batter's box.
01:11:55Strike two.
01:11:56Well, Boog, if you're that base runner at second base,
01:11:59you want to be quiet out there.
01:12:00Not bouncing around, not distracting your teammate, the hitter.
01:12:05Make sure that he can clearly focus on that pitcher and that release point.
01:12:08Oh, and chew down.
01:12:28That's down and in.
01:12:29Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside.
01:12:32Really think the hour half is open.
01:12:34Next pitch is popped up.
01:12:42Brings it in.
01:12:43And there's one down.
01:12:46Well, such a confidence boost for a reliever to come into the ball game
01:12:50and get the first hitter he faces.
01:12:52Just makes everything slow down a little bit.
01:12:55And then from there, can really settle in.
01:12:58Next up for the A's, Jimmy Fox.
01:13:00He gets a shot right here against the righty,
01:13:03and he is elite against right-handed pitching.
01:13:06The contact, the average, and delivers the slow.
01:13:10And he swings and misses at the initial offering.
01:13:13They had a swing and a miss there.
01:13:28Not a swing you want to watch again.
01:13:34Bottom of the night.
01:13:35Down the run.
01:13:36And tying run on second base.
01:13:38And a swing and a miss.
01:14:03The hat trick.
01:14:04And there's two away.
01:14:05Big spot here.
01:14:10Bottom of the night.
01:14:11Down to their final out.
01:14:13Reggie Jackson up next for the A's.
01:14:21And the first pitch misses for ball one.
01:14:25Trying to keep the game alive here in the bottom of the ninth.
01:14:28Next offering is in for a strike.
01:14:47They're down to their final strike.
01:14:49Two strikes.
01:14:50Two strikes.
01:14:51And that one lifted in the air center field.
01:15:04And it's celebration time.
01:15:07They are champions of the American League.
01:15:09Congratulations to the American League champions.
01:15:23These guys have worked hard all season long.
01:15:27And their hard work has paid off.
01:15:29Now, off to the World Series.
01:15:31These guys can't wait to get it started.
01:15:33From my partner, Chris Singleton, and our entire outstanding crew,
01:15:43thank you for watching the American League championship series on MLB The Show.
01:16:17For tonight, first for the Victorian Yankees, one run on two hits.
01:16:22No answers.
01:16:22They left four.
