00:00On August 7, the church celebrates Saint Gaëtan, a 16th-century Italian priest and founder of the Theatine Order.
00:09A man of fire and faith, he dedicated himself to the spiritual reform of the church, in a period of great turmoil.
00:18Gaëtan de Tienne, born in 1480, in Vicenza, into a noble and pious family.
00:25He studied civil and ecclesiastical law at the University of Padua, then entered the service of the papal court in Rome.
00:35But very quickly, he became disappointed by worldly life and aspired to a more evangelical path.
00:42Ordained a priest in 1516, he settled in Vicenza, then in Naples, where he cared for the sick, visited prisoners and lived in voluntary poverty.
00:55He founded with other senior clerics the Congregation of Clerics Regular, better known as the Theatines, from the name of the first co-founding bishop.
01:07The goal of this order is to live like the apostles, in simplicity, prayer, service and without depending on a fixed income.
01:18The Theatines wanted to reform the clergy by example, not by criticism.
01:24Saint Cajetan is a precursor of the Catholic reform, which culminated in the Council of Trent.
01:30He did not write a great treatise, but his life itself is a testimony, austere but radiant, demanding but joyful.
01:41He died in Naples in 1547, exhausted by a life of self-denial, but surrounded by an immense reputation for holiness.
01:51He was canonized in 1671 by Clement X.
01:58Today, he is prayed to especially by those seeking employment, financial stability, or renewed trust in Providence.
02:11Saint Cajetan reminds us that true reform of the Church begins with ourselves.
02:17He did not denounce evil from the stands, he fought it with the holiness he lived every day.
02:25Let us pray to him to help us remain faithful in trials, confident in God's Providence and zealous in our service to the poorest.
