We went out into Manchester to ask people on the street about the grassroots music scene in Manchester, and whether the new council grant is a good thing.
Transcript
00:00Hello and welcome to a very wet and windy Manchester.
00:03We've managed to time our visit out onto the streets of Manchester today
00:06to avoid the rain, but there will still be a bit of bluster in the air.
00:11But that's quite alright because it's another lovely week here in Manchester.
00:14My name's Theo Houston-Betz, this is People on the Street,
00:16where I go out and ask people on the street about a couple of topics
00:19that we think are important to Manchester.
00:21And today we're talking about music.
00:23Now you may have seen our video last week where we said that the council
00:25are giving out ÂŁ250,000 to smaller grassroots music venues
00:29following the success of the Oasis gigs
00:31and the way that they managed to generate money for the local economy.
00:34So with that in mind, we're out on the streets of Manchester today
00:36asking people about music, asking why small grassroots venues
00:40are the key to Manchester's music scene
00:42and ask if they're happy as well that the council are doing this
00:46and trying to push small businesses.
00:48So let's go out and see what people have to say, shall we?
00:50I think what's good about the money raised from the Oasis gig
00:55then obviously going into all the smaller Manchester music venues
01:01because it's keeping up for the Manchester music alive
01:04and the culture and the scene.
01:07And it's important we keep it going.
01:08You know, the amount of music that I suppose comes out of Manchester
01:11and it's reached all over the country.
01:14It's important we keep the speciality of that.
01:18Well, it's just, it's nice to go out and like see live music
01:21and then not have to like pay to see it as well.
01:24It sounds awful, but obviously you're already going to like a bar
01:28and you're already like getting drinks and stuff,
01:30so you're paying for that.
01:31But it's nice to like sit down with friends actually just to hear music.
01:33Obviously, like you said, Theo, about the music,
01:35obviously the music in Manchester is pretty special.
01:38But I think even for, you know, I suppose the fashion
01:41and the creativity that comes out of this place,
01:43there's a lot of young creatives saying you think,
01:45oh, everything's all about London, going to London.
01:47And I've seen both scenes.
01:49I've been involved a little bit in both scenes of London
01:51and obviously back home here in the north of Manchester.
01:54And yeah, I think it's like, it's got this energy
01:58that I'd say no other English city has.
02:01I think as well, like music is a lot about inclusivity
02:04and like when it becomes like too big and too gentrified,
02:09like it becomes exclusive and that's not what it's supposed to be about.
02:13So having like grassroots, like faces and like faces
02:17that do take on small artists.
02:18Like firstly, you're giving someone like a chance
02:20to be able to like express themselves
02:23and giving them a platform to do so
02:24because we don't really get that that often.
02:27And also like, I don't know,
02:29do you just see some like really good stuff sometimes
02:32when you go out and it's like super niche
02:34and you wouldn't have seen it otherwise.
02:35I think it, again, it's all about giving to the next generation,
02:39I think, and keeping this place alive,
02:42keeping it, keeping it, you know, fun and interesting.
02:47That's for like care and appreciation.
02:49It's not about like money.
02:51It's not like some like factory sort of like made thing.
02:55It's like human, you know?
02:58It's like, so like people don't learn what they're doing.
03:01It's like, Ipris, you know,
03:03right?
03:03We don't know.
03:05You know, I mean,
03:06I don't care, not because we know what people want to do.
03:07It certainly can be like people to be a teacher in the Hereafter want,
03:09they just go out too.
03:11But we do this.
03:14We don't worry.
03:15You know,
03:16that's February.
03:18I've been telling us here.
03:19I spent one person will tell you I'm gonna come out.
03:22We'll be at a timeى
03:23but when we know what our next generation
03:26is doing well.
