Dry and fine for most overnight, with some fleeting showers across northern and eastern areas. Some stronger winds with showery rain to the eastern coasts of England during the early hours of Saturday. - This is the Met Office UK Weather forecast for the evening of 01/08/2025. Bringing you today’s weather forecast is Clare Nasir.
00:00Hello there, welcome to your Friday evening weather update from the Met Office.
00:04It's a calm start to the weekend, but all change through Saturday night and into Sunday as a bank of rain moves in
00:12and then storm floris arrives on our shores through Monday named by the Met Office.
00:16More about that in a moment.
00:18A ridge of high pressure though through Saturday, keeping things fine and mostly dry.
00:22This band of cloud and rain will bring some lively conditions with some heavier pulses of rain
00:28extending from Scotland and Northern Ireland down towards England and Wales through a Sunday daytime.
00:34And then things turn a bit quieter yet again through Sunday night.
00:38However, into Monday morning we'll see an area of low pressure move in, deepening all the while.
00:44Now, winds will pick up some strength as outbreaks of rain arrive and they're likely to be heavy.
00:49This is storm floris.
00:51There's a wind warning anywhere from northern parts of England, north Wales and northwards.
00:56So in land, we're expecting gusts to be probably 40 or 50 miles an hour across exposure.
01:01That's the hills, the coasts and the mountains, 60 to 70 miles an hour.
01:05But across northern and northeastern Scotland, excess wind gusts could reach 80, 85 miles an hour.
01:12So some impactful weather coming our way.
01:15It will be windy further south on Monday and you will see some outbreaks of rain.
01:19Heaviest rain always though across central and northern areas associated with this area of low pressure.
01:25Which will track north eastwards as we head into Sunday night.
01:30That's where the strongest winds will be.
01:31That real squeeze on the isobar.
01:33And then some showers in the north on Tuesday as things calm down further south.
01:38Back to Friday evening.
01:40Some fleeting showers continue across this eastern side.
01:44And notice this feature here bringing some stronger winds to the east coast of England.
01:49In particular, we could see a little showery rain just clip east Anglia as well as the south east into the early hours of Saturday morning.
01:56For most though, Saturday will be a dry start to the day.
02:01It will be fine with some sunshine.
02:02But rather cool in places, particularly for Scotland and Northern Ireland, the far north of England.
02:08In land across the glen say temperatures dipping down to single figures.
02:11First thing then on Saturday morning, you can see that showery rain continues just clipping Kent before it clears.
02:19And then for most of the day, it's lovely to be out and about.
02:22Sunny spells, the cloud could build through the middle part of the day.
02:25There's a small chance of a light shower.
02:27A brisk breeze for Shetland.
02:29That strong wind along the eastern side tends to go offshore.
02:33And we'll see a bit more cloud move in across Northern Ireland and Western Scotland later.
02:39Now, through the afternoon, temperatures will rise quite nicely to, I would say, 18 or 19 across Scotland.
02:46You may get a 20 across the central belt, the Inverness area.
02:50So, Murray Firth 21, 21 for Northern Ireland.
02:54And 23, 24 across Mid-Wales down towards the south east.
02:58So, warmer than Friday.
02:59However, through Saturday night, notice dry across England and Wales as that rain rolls in across Northern Ireland as well as Scotland.
03:08Some heavy pulses of rain can't be ruled out.
03:10A stronger wind on the back edge of this rain, even with the risk of thunder as it slides down towards England and Wales into the beginning of Sunday morning.
03:20A trailing front bringing some showery burst to the south west.
03:23And then it clears from Northern England and Wales through the afternoon.
03:27We hang on to more cloud and also some showery rain across the south east, central southern England until much later on.
03:34Temperatures then typically 21 to 23, but feeling fresh in that breeze across the north as well as the west of Scotland, exposed to the far north of Northern Ireland as well.
03:44But that's not the end of the story.
03:46As that rain clears, things calm down yet again.
03:49We have a ridge of high pressure keeping things fairly quiet.
03:53However, into the early hours of Monday morning, that's when we'll see that cloud slowly move in with some outbreaks of rain to Northern Ireland.
04:03And then that rain extends towards more western areas through into the first part of Monday morning.
04:09The winds then pick up some strength initially across Northern Ireland, Irish Seacoast as well as the western side of Scotland.
04:15And then they really pack a punch as we head through the morning into the afternoon.
04:20This deep area of low pressure tracking across the northern part of Scotland.
04:24A trailing weather front bringing blustery conditions and showery bursts of rain.
04:28But it's really in the north where we will see some impactful weather.
04:31And there could be disruption to transport, obviously a risk to high-sided vehicles.
04:36And there could be an issue also if you are travelling by ferry with some high waves.
04:40Those winds then become strongest across the northeast of Scotland as we head through into Monday evening.
04:46In its wake, some showers, but blustery across the north.
04:49Some brighter, fine weather across more southern and eastern areas as we head through to Tuesday.
04:54But please stay up to date with the forecast.
