01:42I'm like, oh, shoot. And so we're like trying to like fight with the guy and he's, you know, he's very Parisian, which is even more than French, you know?
01:50And we're fighting with the guy. He's not having it. And then we're making phone calls.
01:55Like, we swear you're on the list.
01:56Our manager was with us.
01:57Our manager was talking to them.
01:58I'm inside trying to like figure it out.
02:01You're like, what's the deal? And like the band's like about to go on.
02:04And finally our manager was there and he got real like a manager on.
02:06And he's like, listen, these guys are on the turnstile list.
02:10And the guy goes, turnstile, you're at the Peaches show.
02:15I didn't know that.
02:17Yes.

02:17Oh my God, it was the one next door.
02:19Yeah, there were venues like back, they were right next door to each other.
02:22We've been fighting to get out of the Peaches show.
02:25You had actually pointed out like the crowd that was going into the Peaches show were dressed like it was not a hardcore punk crowd.

03:15Was it like an old high school reunion or what did it feel like to be back?

03:20Yeah, I would say it was kind of like, well, you guys go.
03:22I mean, we saw some old friends, you know, stagehands, people from catering, people that,
03:30you know, worked in the merch world.
03:33It was great to see a lot of friends.
03:36How was it different?
03:38You know, it was because it was a mixture of like a lot of old faces, like Brandon said,
03:42and then a lot of just new people, you know.
03:44I think, you know what made it different is that we did an acoustic thing in the middle
03:50of it, and afterwards, a guy walked up to me with a picture of the four of us, kind
03:55of an old picture like that, and it was the four of us with this guy holding a baby, and
03:58he's like, check out this picture, like, can you sign it?
04:00I was like, yeah, I'd be happy to sign it.
04:01And then this guy goes, I'm the baby.
04:04Oh, my God.
04:06And his dad, his dad looked like he was 12.
04:11I go, and to the point where I said, is that your dad?
04:14And by the way, this guy, and I said, how old are you?
04:16And he goes, I'm 19, and that means his dad still probably looks very young.
04:20I was like, is that, I go, how old's your dad?
04:22He goes, oh, dude, he's old.
04:22He's like 41.
04:23Oh, my God.
04:26Jesus Christ.
04:27There's a girl that came up to me earlier who I've been getting into Rise Again shows
04:30since she was this big.
04:32Rebecca.
04:33Rebecca, yeah.
04:34Yes.
04:34I was going to, I was like, anyways, and I was like, she looks familiar.
04:37She's saying hi to me.
04:38She's like, I'm 30 now.
04:39And I was like, what the fuck?

04:46So I just, I've been, I just went, I need to delete, I'm going to drop this.
04:49I just went to the Oasis show at Wembley Stadium.
04:53And the reason I'm saying it is because I don't know what it was about this particular show.
04:59It was very emotional.
05:00It was very healing.
05:01It was very chaotic.
05:02Like, it was all of these things and nostalgic.
05:05And for some reason, nostalgia is very healing at the moment.
05:08Have you noticed that there's a trend in like all these nostalgic acts just bringing people
05:13together?
05:15I mean, yeah, it's happening for sure.

05:17I never thought about it that way.
05:18Like something that's like almost like a, like a comfort food kind of thing.

05:22Because back in the day we were way better off.

05:27But another thing that hit me, because I was really staring at, like, it hit me how happy
05:33people are at shows.
05:35Do you guys, does it ever hit you the immensity of what you do and how people travel to see
05:40you because they want to feel good in a room that you're playing?
05:45Like, does it ever hit you?
05:46Because it hit me at Oasis.
05:47I'm like, even as a fan, I take for granted those spaces.
05:51And you play so much that maybe sometimes you don't understand what you're able to give
05:56to us.
05:57It's a big fucking deal.
06:00Yeah.

06:04I, I would, I'll tell you this.
06:07It is hard for me to grasp what we do and how it affects people until I look at it through
06:12the filter of a fan because I'm a fan of so many bands.
06:15And so I know what my favorite bands do for me.
06:19And so when I can finally, like, sort of, like, tell myself, oh, dude, there's somebody
06:23out there who feels the way you feel about Fugazi, that's the way they feel about your
06:29band.
06:30And then it's like, oh, right.
06:33Oh, I get that.
06:34Yeah.
06:34And that's a, that's a humbling thing to, like, sort of absorb.
06:38It's a beautiful, magical thing.
06:39And let's, we just have to recognize him for a second.
06:41Let's recognize him, Ozzy Osbourne, because I know he's a fan.
06:44I was just about to.

06:45We need to, we need to bring that guy into the room.
06:48I, I streamed the entire Back to the Beginning event.
06:52That's what he's telling me.
06:53I'm not a sports guy.
06:54And that was, it was like my, my Super Bowl, you know?
06:57I started it and all the men, I even drove, I had to run errands because I was home and
07:02I would just have it on my phone and just kind of still be looking at it.
07:05He didn't watch it while he was driving though, right?

07:09No, but I read an interview with Tim where, when it was announced that you were like,
07:13do we go?
07:14Do we buy tickets even if we don't play?
07:15Like, are we going?
07:17We were backstage and I looked at all three of them and I was like, we're fucking going.
07:21I know.
07:21And we didn't.
07:22No, same.
07:23We didn't go.
07:23But I will say that many times during that live stream event, I got giddy and teared
07:29up and I went through the whole spectrum of emotions and I did think about that.
07:34I was like, oh wow, we, we might do this for somebody else.
07:37Arguably he's, Ozzy was the biggest, like that guy got away with everything, but also
07:42the most kind hearted, charming man in the world.
07:45What do you think it was about Ozzy Osbourne?
07:47Some people don't even know Black Sabbath.
07:48They just know him from the Osbournes.
07:50What was it about him in particular that people adored?
07:57Yeah, you got to answer this.
07:59It seems like you're the big fan.
08:01We are on a clock, Zach.
08:02Yeah.
08:04Well, I was introduced to Black Sabbath through my father, you know, so it was very important
08:09to me.
08:10And for him, I believe that he was this iconic figure that also showed people that he was
08:16a human being at all times.
08:18You know, because you did laugh with him.
08:20He's hilarious.
08:21You know, he was hilarious.
08:22But then he was Ozzy fucking Osbourne as well.
08:25That's right.
08:25You know, he famously was, you know, drunk and slurred his speech and did all this other
08:30sort of thing.
08:30Snorted ants.
08:30He wasn't so on a pedestal like everybody else was.
08:33That was like, and I think what it, you know, coming from punk rock and things like
08:36that, that was just a very much like assuming the rock star idiom of, you know, you have
08:43to be this superhuman to get up here and do this.
08:45And Ozzy Osbourne was in that league with those guys, but also still showing people
08:50you didn't.
08:50But it's okay to be a misfit.
08:51Yeah.
08:51Like I was just a guy from, from Birmingham that started this thing with my friends and
08:56invented heavy metal accidentally.
08:58You know what I mean?

09:00You're a very outspoken band.
09:01Somehow you, you do it in a way that I don't think you have, have any of you had visas
09:06revoked?
09:07No.

09:11Have you ever been scared to say some of the things that you think?
09:16Have you ever been scared to release a political opinion because you might lose a fan or because
09:22you might piss off the masses?
09:23I don't think they have.
09:26I mean, have you heard their records?
09:28I don't think they have.
09:29I think no.
09:30I mean, the answer is no only because like, that's who we are.
09:33It's always, we've always been.
09:34We didn't walk into this room, somebody different and then try to pretend like we're something
09:38else.
09:39You know what I mean?
09:39We didn't pivot to politics or away from politics.
09:44It's just when you met us, this was the band that we were.
09:47This is the band that we are.
09:48We've never been anything different.
09:49And so if nothing else, it must be something in that DNA that has attracted you to identify
09:56with this band.
09:57So not only are we unable to pivot away from it, but like, I don't even think it would
10:03be smart for us to pivot away from it.
10:04Like the people that come into, you know, when their ships find the lighthouse of Rise
10:10Against, you know what I mean?
10:11They want that light to keep shining.
10:13You know what I mean?
10:14So we're just going to keep shining and keep doing it.
10:15That's right.
10:16What do you think of bands like Bob Villain and Kneecap who are being very, very vocal
10:21about how they feel about free Palestine and whatnot?
10:24And they're getting, I mean, they're putting their careers on the line.
10:28They're getting kicked off of festivals.
10:30They're getting visas revoked.
10:32And it's astounding to me because since the dawn of time, musicians have been speaking
10:37out.
10:38So the fact that people are all shocked that musicians are still doing it, I'm baffled by
10:43it, but how do you feel about how far out on the ledge they go?
10:48I mean, I love art as resistance.
10:50You know, I love art when it is resistance, when it's talking about ideas of resistance.
10:55That's my favorite kind of art.
10:56And maybe it's not everyone's favorite kind of art, but it's my favorite kind of art.
10:58So when I see that kind of stuff, I think it's great when you can take music and make it
11:03a vehicle for change and awareness and not just selling tickets or records or whatever.
11:08You know, because music lives in a place like we are so siloed nowadays.
11:15We're polarized.
11:15You know what I mean?
11:16Somebody who thinks one way might exist in a world, whether online or in real life, that
11:23might be completely different than the world that I exist in.
11:25And we might not ever even cross paths in that world, whether it's on the internet or in real
11:28life.
11:29But there are a few things that intersect those things, you know, I think sports is
11:33one of them, you know, but music is another one, like music intersects that polarization.
11:38It gets to people on all walks of life.
11:42So it's one of the last few things that it's still talking to people on both sides.
11:47And so if you feel friction, if people feel friction, it's because that friction is really
11:52there.
11:52And it welcomes conversation.
11:54Like, let's talk about the things.
11:55You two are whispering like schoolgirls.
11:56You don't think I'm going to put you on blast.
11:58You don't think that that didn't distract me from my focus?
12:02I was trying to hand him the microphone.
12:03I know.
12:05And he told me, though, backstage, he doesn't really want to be on the spotlight since he's
12:10in the spotlight all the time.
12:12He'd like for you guys to have it, you know?
12:15What would you tell a young band that wants to be outspoken but is scared of sacrificing
12:20their career for it?
12:23Follow your heart.
12:24Do it anyways.
12:24Yeah, do it anyways.

12:26I think, and here's the thing, too, about when we talk about music and politics and whatever
12:29and the age old, like, shut up and play, you know what I mean, or whatever, and like, people's
12:33problem with it.
12:36Not, as a band that's going to sit here calling ourselves Rise Against and be political, like,
12:41I also don't think that all music or all art needs to be political.
12:46You know what I mean?
12:47Like, it's whatever is in your gut.
12:50Like, I love the Ramones.
12:52You know what I mean?
12:52I don't think we're going to find a lot of political songs in the Ramones catalog.
12:55And if you put it up to me, I wouldn't force that upon the Ramones.
12:59If I could go back and I wouldn't change the Ramones.
13:03Yeah, right.
13:03There's so much art out there that just should be what it is.
13:06And you know what that was?
13:06That was like four guys from New York City following their gut.
13:09This is what we love.
13:10This is the sound we love.
13:11These are the things we like to sing about.
13:12And you saw four people that were true to themselves.
13:16So don't force it.
13:17You know what I mean?
13:17If it's not your thing.
13:18Just follow what...
13:19It's not your thing.
13:20The saddest thing I see is when I meet musicians that are like, man, I wish I could say what
13:25you say.
13:26You can.
13:26Like, when I meet someone who is actively suppressing, like, feelings and thoughts out
13:33of fear, you know, that's the saddest thing.
13:35Yeah, I agree.
13:36And so to that person, I would say you got to follow your gut and you got to wake up every
13:41day and be proud of who you are.
13:42And I think if you do that, ultimately, you will find people who appreciate it and respect
13:47it.
13:47You're tried.
13:47And even if people don't agree with you.
13:48That's fine.
13:49You know what I mean?
13:49Like, we grew up in an era of, like, the 90s was, like, Rage Against the Machine.
13:52I guarantee not all of those...
13:53Right, Rage, yeah.
13:55Like, not all those fans agree to the Rage.
13:57Like, I was there, you know, in those crowds.
13:59But you'll meet people who are like, but I respect them for saying what they do, you know?

14:03And I think that artists need to be reminded of that, that, like, people will respect you for being
14:08true to yourself and being authentic.

14:11Let's get to Ricochet, album number 10, which is, I know that you're a very in-the-moment
14:15guy and you might not wrap your head around, holy shit, we've done 10 albums, but you've
14:19done 10 albums.
14:20And I think that you've paid your dues.
14:22You've proven to yourself that you can pack a room, tour the world.
14:25So when you're recording this, do you finally say to yourself, let's just do whatever the
14:31hell we want?
14:31Or is there any pressure?
14:33Or is there any kind of path you follow?
14:36Why don't you give it to the big quiet one over there?
14:41Well, you don't want to step on your bandmate's toe.
14:44They have a better thing.
14:46No one's in that room but us four.
14:48You know?
14:49And no one, and we are each other's peers.
14:52You know?
14:53And that's what's great about being in a band still.
14:55You still have that thing that, from the first band you were in, I've got this riff, what
15:00you got, you know?
15:01And so when these records are getting written, these songs are getting brought in, it's just
15:04us four looking at each other and holding ourselves to the, our feet to the fire of
15:09what Rise Against is, because only we four know what that is.
15:12And that's never going to change.
15:13And I think as long as it doesn't change, we'll be able to call ourselves Rise Against
15:18and be this band.
15:19What are you the most excited for people to experience on this particular album?
15:24And what are you the most excited to play?
15:27There's probably some curveballs on this record, I think, that people won't expect.
15:30I think going into a 10th record, like, we don't know what people want to hear.
15:35You know what I mean?
15:36Like, we're out here trying to craft, like, hits that will...
15:38You're being true to yourself, and that works.
15:40Yes, that's all we're trying to do.
15:41Like, we wouldn't even claim to guess to know what a 20, 25 world wants in music.

15:48Like, music, the stuff, music surprises us, right?
15:51The stuff that becomes popular, we were talking about Turnstile earlier, that wasn't, that
15:55they weren't crafting the next big hit to, like, one day be headlining a festival.
15:59They were just being true to themselves somewhere in Baltimore.

16:02And we're not in a laboratory crafting things to, like, skyrocket through billboard charts,
16:08whatever.
16:08So we don't know what anybody wants.
16:10All we can do is be true to ourselves.
16:11But I think on this record, we did some things that they won't fit seamlessly into our back
16:18catalog.

16:19They will be unique to this era of Rise Against, you know?
16:23I think you'll find some traditional Rise Against on this record as well, too.
16:27But I think we probably took some risks, like, songs that people will be like, instead of
16:31saying, like, oh, this is Rise Against, people will say, oh, this is Rise Against?
16:35You know?
16:35That happened to me when it got played upstairs.
16:37K-Rock is upstairs.
16:39And my boss played, he's like, just listen to this.
16:41And he puts it full volume.
16:42I'm like, this sounds fun.
16:44I know that voice.
16:45I'm like, who the fuck is this?
16:46This is amazing.
16:48It's like Rise Against.
16:48And I was like, so surprised, but not surprised, if that makes any sense.
16:52Like, yes, that's fucking Rise Against.
16:54But it's, so yes, I know what you're talking about.
16:57I want you guys to experience it.

17:00How do you stay sane with this crazy schedule and always touring and not knowing what time
17:07zone you're on and missing your family?

17:11I had a 20-hour travel day.

17:16But how do you stay, how do you stay sane?
17:20I mean, you're assuming that we do stay sane.

18:24and find the things you love to do and do it as often as you can.
