00:00For sailor Kyra Marie Morris, competing at the Junior Pan American Games is another stepping stone to her development.
00:07She has been competing in the sport from a young age and now she is eager to represent her country.
00:12I feel a sense of accomplishment because one of my goals when I was growing up was to represent Trinidad and Tobago at a young age, which I have accomplished.
00:27Thus far, she has been using the opportunities that come her way to get exposure in a sport that she's growing to enjoy.
00:35Last year was my first international competition. I participated in Whale Sailing Youth Whale Championships in Italy, Lake Garda.
00:46Because it was my first international competition, I didn't do so well, but that was not the goal then.
00:57The goal for that competition was to get exposure.
01:01She said competing abroad opened her eyes to a higher level of competition.
01:04I would say I was able to get help in refining sailing skills and understanding tactics and strategies and those kinds of things.
01:16And understanding and getting a feel for big fleet sailing because it was 60 of us, 60 females on the start line.
01:25It was very challenging to get accustomed to it because we really don't have, if we have 10 boats at nationals in Trinidad, we have a lot.
01:36She will be competing in the Junior Pan American Games from the 13th to the 18th of August.
01:42And finishing in the top 10 will be one of her objectives.
01:45There's one specific thing I want to work on when I go down there, which would be my starts.
01:49I have a hard time gauging where the line is.
01:55So I want to try to, I shouldn't say perfect it, but improve it.
02:02I would like to come in the top 10.
02:08Following this competition, she will be targeting a few more races as she aims to improve her performance.
02:14Search it before TV6 Sport.
02:15Bye-bye.
02:16Bye-bye.
