Is Patriots Offensive Line a Big Improvement from Last Year?
Transcript
00:00So the thing you guys kept talking about with the past this year
00:03and everything, everyone keeps saying that's going to be like 10
00:05or 11-plus wins, the big jump, because I don't count that fourth
00:10win they won last year, but if they don't have an offensive line,
00:14and I know you guys keep saying like the offensive line got better
00:16and everything like that, but I don't see such a huge jump this year
00:21doing that, but I don't know.
00:24Everything can happen, possibly.
00:26But, again, if you just compare it to last season,
00:30your quarterback should be better.
00:32Like, I mean, you're right.
00:34Yeah, I would say you have a head coach who has at least more experience
00:39and should be better.
00:41Significant up.
00:41Okay, offensive coordinator should be miles better.
00:45Much better.
00:45Right?
00:46I agree with that.
00:47And defense.
00:49Defense should be significantly better.
00:51I don't know if it's a five-game jump based on those things,
00:57but it definitely is, should be.
01:00And your schedule, the schedule is one of the easier schedules in the NFL.
01:04So all those things, I think, should result in wins.
01:08And Drake should be more confident.
01:10He should come into this season better prepared.
01:12We heard that he took it upon himself to make sure that he had work
01:16during the offseason with his receivers and making sure that he knew
01:20how they were getting to work out, where they were going to stay during it.
01:23He's taking control of the team.
01:25And how many wins do you believe the Patriots would have had last year
01:29if Drake May began in week one?
01:33Six.
01:33Okay, so if you're going from six, six to nine, six to ten is not quite the leap
01:40of four to ten, right?
01:41No, it's not.
01:42So it's not that he is all of a sudden making the team six games better.
01:47It's just four games better than they would have been had he played his entire
01:50rookie.
01:50I think if you got six last year and then you upgraded when it came to Mike
01:55Vrabel, then I think you get another couple wins automatically, I would think.
01:59Right.
01:59No disrespect to Gerard Mayo.
02:01No, no, but I would completely agree with you.
02:03And the other thing is that, and people have to look at this,
02:06and I think they have to be honest, this team this year, now granted,
02:11is on paper, but is significantly better than last year's team on paper.
02:16I'll argue with anybody on any subject you want of that if you don't think that
02:23is true, because we just talked about it.
02:25I think Drake May is not going to be significantly better.
02:29Now, listen, when you say that in the Twitch chat or on the text line,
02:34you get the response, which is he only won one game.
02:38No, no, and I don't.
02:40That's a great analysis.
02:41Yes.
02:41Really deep hitting, hard hitting.
02:43Love it.
02:44Just because of the things that we talked about with the offensive coordinator.
02:48Do they beat the Seahawks in week two of Drake May is the starting quarterback?
02:51They had the ball on the plus 25.
02:53I think they do.
02:54Yeah, but do you beat Cincinnati in week one?
02:56Yeah.
02:56Yeah.
02:57That was, see, I don't, because here's where the significant upgrade comes in.
03:04And Courtney, I think you're spot on because you kind of, you hit the nail right on the
03:07head when you said he has the confidence knowing that he's the guy, the coaching staff
03:14believes in him, the coaching staff is basically saying, here's what we want you to do, Drake.
03:19Here's how we're building the offense around you.
03:21I don't think that happened last year because there were way too many voices on where they
03:29thought Drake May should be, should be.
03:33And we weren't really sold on Alex Van Pelt as putting him in the right situation to be
03:39the right, because he's building an offense for Jacoby Brissett when you should be building
03:46your offense around Drake May.
03:48Yeah.
03:49So it's two different.
03:49That's why I think significantly better for Drake May year two.
03:53Their defense is significantly better.
03:55Their O-line might not be significantly better, but is better.
03:59Your wide receiver room with the addition of Steph Diggs, massive upgrade.
04:04So that's significantly better.
04:05This is a team, when you look at it, and then we obviously talk about the coaches, that you
04:10should be able to go out there with your schedule and get nine wins.
04:15Well, Alex Van Pelt wasn't quite aware positionally of where players had played the previous season.
04:19I forgot about that.
04:21I mean, think about that.
04:22That was a bit of a disadvantage for him.
04:23He was so bad.
04:24But so think of that.
04:26Every position, you're a better coach.
04:28You didn't even know that your most talented offensive weapon could play offense.
04:32Insane.
04:33Right?
04:34I did not even think about it.
04:35That was a communication.
04:36Like, Gerard, he would have gotten that.
04:39He'd ask the question.
04:41Van Pelt can tell you all Chick-fil-A's within five miles of the stadium, but he didn't know
04:45his star defensive player could tell you.
04:48And I don't remember if it was Billy O'Brien or Josh McDaniels because they all run together,
04:52but they utilize Marcus Jones?
04:57Yeah, it was Marcus Jones and it was Billy O.
04:59Yeah, it was Marcus Jones.
05:00So they utilize it, and that is like a great point.
05:03The fact that your offensive coordinator did not realize that you had a guy that could
05:09contribute on offense just goes to show you how bad it was last year.
05:16Bill O'Brien back on the show throughout the college football season, so I'm very excited
05:21about that.
05:22Does BC have a chance to win the ACC?
05:25They've always got a chance.
05:26Well, I mean, you know.
05:27Well, I think I've heard that they've looked good, that their recruiting has been really
05:31good.
05:32AVP, what's one word you would use to describe today's show?
05:35Wow.
05:36Um.
05:39Sean, are you getting a play-in from Billy O this season?
05:43I hope so.
05:44I mean.
05:44He promised.
05:45Yeah.
05:45You know.
05:47It was supposed to be last season.
05:48Couldn't do that.
05:49Couldn't even do it in spring practices.
05:51Have you finished the design?
05:53Oh, I'm ready.
05:54Yeah.
05:54Okay.
05:55I'm locked and loaded, baby.
05:56I feel like once the spring game.
05:57What are we calling it?
05:58What are we calling it?
05:59I think Wiggy came up with Shime's potatoes.
06:03They need to put it in week one, because we should be beating Fordham by a wide margin.
06:07I'm on Shime Island.
06:08But the problem is, once the spring game got scrapped, unless Shime, I know he's got a
06:14lot of time coaching soccer in the summer.
06:16When's that start?
06:17Not until like August 30th.
06:18Okay.
06:18Well, BC's probably starting, like a lot of teams are today, at fall camp.
06:24So, Shime's going to have to, right after the show's over, head down to Chestnut Hill
06:28and see if he can get out there for a couple days so we can get this play in early in camp
06:33and tweak it in any way we need to tweak it.
06:36How about UMass?
06:37Week one Temple.
06:38How are the boys looking?
06:39Well, you know what?
06:40They start today.
06:40So, it's going to have a great opportunity.
06:44New coach.
06:45New locker room.
06:46I'm excited.
06:47I'm excited for Curtis's one college game lock weekend, because you crushed that last season.
06:52Yeah, I'll give my picks in advance.
06:54Very excited.
06:55Yeah, BC Fordham, right?
06:55That should be a good game to break out Shime's potatoes.
06:59Are we going to do a show UMass-Tillgate?
07:01Let's do it.
07:02They're down for it.
07:03Are they ready to go down there?
07:05Yeah, definitely.
07:06I gave all the stuff to Ken, you know?
07:08Okay.
07:08Can we use Shime's brother's pork butt?
07:12As long as they're health inspector.
07:13UMass would love it.
07:14Their new head coach, you know, they would love it, you know?
07:17So, it's...
07:18I love college football.
07:20Wow.
07:22I completely forgot.
07:24You didn't know he had a player on defense.
07:26Wow.
07:26So, I'm excited about college.
07:29I can't wait to see.
07:30Between UMass and my boys, between Bill Belichick and UNC...
07:35We got, what, Texas-Ohio State week one?
07:36Yeah, between Billy-O and BC, because, you know, we talked to Billy-O, like, college football.
07:42I'm excited.
07:43Arch Manning, can't wait to see what he's going to look like.
07:47And I am excited about college football.
07:49Notre Dame at BC, going to be a big weekend for that.
07:52Oh, when is that one?
07:55Early.
07:56Or, no, Thanksgiving.
07:57Thanksgiving.
07:58Thanksgiving.
07:58They haven't...
07:59Speaking of reading into camp things, are you surprised that Travis Hunter has been about equal when it comes to snaps?
08:08I am.
08:08I don't know what they're doing in Jacksonville.
08:10I think this is a huge, huge mistake.
08:13Wow.
08:13And I'm just...
08:14I mean, maybe he had a deal with them and told them, listen, I'm doing it.
08:21And you gotta...
08:21You have to acquiesce.
08:23Yeah, but what's the head coach down there?
08:24Is it Liam Cohen?
08:25Liam Cohen's the new head coach.
08:26Okay, you gotta know...
08:27Duval.
08:29Yes.
08:29You gotta see how the NFL works.
08:32And you got two years...
08:33Duval.
08:35...as a head coach.
08:37So I don't think you want to put yourself in a position where you're going to allow a player to come in and go, okay, dictate how much playing time he's going to get.
08:45And if you look at Travis Hunter, he's a little bit of a slender built.
08:48That's going to be too much wear and tear for this guy to be able to say, okay, I gotta go, you know, from covering whether it's Jamar Chase, Justin Jefferson, to now going out there and having to go up against, you know, Patrick Sertain Jr.
09:06Like, these all-pro defensive backs, and I'm not saying he's playing these guys, but that's what he's going to have to do week in and week out.
09:14Shut down the best wide receiver and then go against the best corner.
09:19How are you...
09:19Well, luckily he won't draw the best corner because Brian Thomas Jr. is there, but I understand what you're saying.
09:24Right, so I just think that just put him at one position and you, unlike Alex Van Pelt, know who he is and utilize him in situations.
