The Drive's Clint Stoerner and Ron "The Show" Hughley discuss the latest report on Texans running back Joe Mixon's injury.
Transcript
00:00All right, report this weekend, Ian Rappaport, that Texans running back Joe Mixon,
00:07who is on the non-football injury list, is expected to be out an extended period of time
00:14with a frustrating foot injury.
00:17Sources say he could be out for the entire preseason, is what sources are saying.
00:24So that became very serious.
00:25We wondered. We have not seen him since any kind of offseason program has started.
00:32And that is your lead back, and it makes the Nick Chubb signing even bigger.
00:37But this was D'Amico today.
00:40D'Amico, Ryan's the head coach, addressing the Joe Mixon reports.
00:46Yeah, nothing's changed with Joe.
00:47Joe is still working in the background.
00:50I know we get reports about Joe.
00:52Nothing's changed. He's still working.
00:54Whenever it's time for Joe to be back, he'll be back.
00:56I know a lot of people want to report a lot of things about guys with injuries.
01:01My thing is this, is are you really concerned about our guys?
01:04Are you really just trying to get something?
01:09I always put my players' health and safety first and foremost.
01:13So I care about the guys, so you guys don't hear me talking a lot about injuries
01:17because that's their personal information.
01:18Guys are working through that, and there's nothing to report or get in an uproar about.
01:23Like, our guys are working, and that's always sensitive to me because I've been there.
01:27I've went through that.
01:28So it's not just to report something to report something.
01:31Like, I want people here who truly care about our guys.
01:33I care about our guys and what they're doing throughout their process,
01:37and it will continue to be that way.
01:38All right, that was D'Amico Ryan's Clinton.
01:43He, wow, okay.
01:47He let it be known there.
01:49He was not happy with the reports.
01:51My question is, are they wrong?
01:53Like, are they inaccurate?
01:57That was an interesting spiel to me.
02:00I want people here that care about the team,
02:02and it's not the media's job to care about the guys.
02:06It's the media's job to be the mouthpiece and to keep people informed.
02:11And to report what they find out.
02:13And to report what the hell's going on kind of deal.
02:16So that was interesting to me.
02:18I mean, it sounded to me, we talked about it when I heard it the first time,
02:21it sounds like he's talking specifically to somebody.
02:24It's not, I mean, everybody out there isn't asking questions,
02:29trying to be the first one to announce some level of injury or something.
02:34I don't know if it were Ian Rapoport or it was Adam Schefter or one of those guys.
02:39If it were, then, I mean, I'm curious why the local media caught the brunt of that one.
02:46But if it's the same question that he hears,
02:51it seems like a lot of the questioning from the media a lot of the times is,
02:55there's already a story in place,
02:57and I'm just trying to get a quote from the head coach to plug into my story.
03:00And I could see where that would get old for him.
03:03But it seems like there's a little bit of that as well as the not wanting
03:10or not being happy with the details of injuries getting out.
03:14Because if you remember correctly,
03:16they beat around the bush before the C.J. Stroud thing ended up coming out.
03:19They beat around the bush before this Joe Mixon thing comes out.
03:22I've always said it, Ron.
03:23If you, quote, unquote, beat around the bush in 2024, 2025, I guess it is,
03:31people are going to find out.
03:33There's sources.
03:34There's agents.
03:34There's people that are talking.
03:36If you want to control the narrative, go ahead and get out there in front of it
03:39and be the one that puts the truth out there instead of getting mad
03:44when people report on something that may or may not be true.
03:49Yeah.
03:50Listen, I hope he's all right.
03:52We'll see.
03:52I would, I mean, at least from the reports of people that usually are in the know
04:00and what they're reporting, Clint, this seems like he could be out for long stretches.
04:05This seems like he could be out for, as they said, maybe the entire preseason,
04:11which means right up into the regular season.
04:14And, Clint, that means will he actually be ready for the regular season with all that?
04:18But it sounds like this could be a significant issue potentially early if he indeed is going to be out for that long a stretch.
04:33Absolutely.
04:33Hell yeah, it's a problem for the Texans.
04:35I mean, you go from talking about a one-two punch with Joe Mixon being the tip of that spear
04:39and Nick Chubb, depending on what Nick Chubb you get, being the counterpunch.
04:45And the thought is, boy, I guess the X factor out there or the wild card out there is, boy, how good can Nick Chubb be?
04:55Is it old Nick Chubb?
04:56Is it 75% of the old Nick Chubb?
04:59And then how does that work with a one-two punch in Houston?
05:02And now, all of a sudden, the dynamic is, well, if Joe Mixon is hurt and to any degree he's going to miss a huge chunk of training camp,
05:09which is what it sounds like, you're one Nick Chubb injury away from, guess what, Daria Gumbawale.
05:17Yeah.
05:17Guess what, British Brooks, Jawad Jordan.
05:20I mean, you're, you're, you know, you're, there's Woody Marks.
05:23Yeah, Woody Marks could jump in there.
05:25I mean, you're, you're, we're back to square one in a sense of, boy, that damn trusty, that damn trusty,
05:32Gumbawale is all of a sudden, all of a sudden the running back again.
05:36This is, this is a problem in Houston, no doubt about it.
05:39Yeah, because right now, you know, the, the Damian Pierce situation, he has not practiced and been back yet,
05:46which brings him into the fold.
05:48So like, you know, now, right, Clint, even with the numbers, and I'm sure they can work this out,
05:53but you gotta, they're going to, they're going to potentially, depending on how this heals.
05:58Now, now, as D'Amico said, nothing's changed, and maybe there isn't going to be that much of a difference,
06:07and he's on track or off, and he, and he's back quicker than that.
06:12But it does feel like, like, I don't, I don't know that you can get rid of any of these guys
06:18if Joe Mixon potentially isn't, you know, isn't ready week one.
06:24And if you are, if you're going to miss the bulk of the training camp, and maybe all the preseason,
06:30then I, I think it's at, at the very least up, you know, up for debate if you're going to be ready
06:35for the regular season against the Rams.
06:37And if that's the case, right, it feels like they gotta probably keep almost all these guys.
06:42And I think somewhere between Darre, Woody, Pierce, Chubb, Mixon, like, all of them,
06:50they weren't going to keep five backs.
06:52So this, this may potentially, you know, look at their numbers as well because of this injury
06:58and, and, and not knowing how long it may be.
07:00Well, here's the beauty of it is, is, well, really it's, it's the double-edged sword of Nick Chubb here, Ron,
07:06because Nick Chubb's going to factor in a major way to, if, if, if this is a,
07:10we're going to miss the bulk of camp, we're talking about a lower leg injury.
07:13We're talking about, um, a ramp up period that's going to be necessary.
07:17You know, who, I mean, this is a, this is a serious deal for the Houston Texans
07:22with Joe Mixon missing, the way that he's missing, the time that he's missing,
07:26the fact that they're installing an offense.
07:28This is, this is a major issue.
07:29Now it's a double-edged sword with Nick Chubb though, right?
07:33You got no Joe Mixon.
07:34So everybody, the eyes are squarely on Nick Chubb.
07:37Now, yes, he is injury prone, so to speak, or he is coming off of an injury.
07:43The flip side of that is, D'Amico talked about it today, Ron, is,
07:48this guy is the path of protection.
07:51I mean, when it comes to installing an offense and listening, retaining,
07:54and applying an offense, Nick Chubb has got that licked, right?
07:58So you, you do have a, a positive situation there.
08:01You would just rather that be the counterpunch and not relied so heavily upon.
08:05No, Nick, Nick Chubb, I mean, maybe staring at it, Nick Chubb may have to be,
08:11especially, Clint, if they're, if they're looking to try to really be a run team
08:15and run the football, Nick Chubb may potentially have to be called on to play
08:21starter caliber reps.
08:24At the very least, like, you would think Joe'sness not going to be a full regular workload.
08:30You remember last week, Joe, last year, Joe Mixon carried the ball 30 times in week one.
08:34Ron, I will be shocked if, if, if week one Chubb isn't depended on with, with, with,
08:42with RB one as being RB one.
08:44I would think right now.
08:46Yeah.
08:47I mean, the way the reports are.
08:48Yeah.
08:48I would think because this isn't just a, this isn't just a comeback and everything's fine.
08:52I mean, now this is, this is a NFL running back.
08:55That's up in age a little bit that, that runs a certain style.
08:57That's going to need to be ramped up.
08:59That's I mean, hell it's yeah.
09:01It's an issue.
09:01Yeah.
09:02He's not, yeah.
09:03He's not going to have suited up for a while since last year.
