The UK will recognise the state of Palestine in September unless Israel takes “substantive steps” to end the “appalling situation in Gaza”, Sir Keir Starmer has said. The UK and its allies need to see “at least 500 trucks entering Gaza every day” to deliver aid, the Prime Minister added. Report by Gluszczykm. 00:00On the 7th of October 2023, Hamas perpetrated the worst massacre in Israel's history.
00:08Every day since then, the horror has continued.
00:13The hostages are still being held today.
00:16The Palestinian people have endured terrible suffering.
00:20Now, in Gaza, because of a catastrophic failure of aid,
00:25we see starving babies, children too weak to stand,
00:31images that will stay with us for a lifetime.
00:35The suffering must end.
00:38Yesterday I discussed this with President Trump,
00:41and we're mounting a major effort to get humanitarian supplies back in, by air.
00:48And UK aid has been airdropped into Gaza today, and crucially, by land.
00:55We need to see at least 500 trucks entering Gaza every day.
01:01But ultimately, the only way to bring this humanitarian crisis to an end
01:07is through a long-term settlement.
01:11So we are supporting the US, Egyptian and Qatari efforts to secure a vital ceasefire.
01:17That ceasefire must be sustainable.
01:22Our goal remains a safe and secure Israel,
01:27alongside a viable and sovereign Palestinian state.
01:32But right now, that goal is under pressure like never before.
01:38I have always said that we will recognise a Palestinian state
01:43as a contribution to a proper peace process
01:46at the moment of maximum impact for the two-state solution.
01:51I can confirm the UK will recognise the state of Palestine
01:56by the United Nations General Assembly in September,
02:01unless the Israeli government takes substantive steps
02:04to end the appalling situation in Gaza,
02:08agree to a ceasefire,
02:09and commit to a long-term sustainable peace,
02:13reviving the prospect of a two-state solution.
02:16And this includes allowing the UN to restart the supply of aid
02:20and making clear that there will be no annexations in the West Bank.
02:26Meanwhile, our message to the terrorists of Hamas
02:30is unchanged and unequivocal.
02:34They must immediately release all of the hostages,
02:38sign up to a ceasefire,
02:40disarm and accept that they will play no part in the government of Gaza.
02:45Thank you very much.
