Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy said the UK is expected to move towards recognising a Palestinian state, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer due to make a formal statement later today. He pointed to the absence of a ceasefire in Gaza and Israel’s West Bank settlement expansion as undermining peace prospects. Lammy said the decision would align the UK with countries including France and Belgium. Report by Covellm. 00:00I set out in the United Nations, after the Prime Minister spoke to the country about recognition,
00:07that we would move to recognition unless we saw a ceasefire in Gaza
00:12and unless we saw steps towards a new process for peace in the region.
00:20And the assessment that we are making at this time is that it does look like a ceasefire is unlikely,
00:27following the attack by Israel on Qatar a few days ago.
00:32And if we look at the West Bank, the decision to move forward with the E1 expansion of settler homes
00:38runs a coach and horses through the prospects of two states.
00:43And so for all of those reasons, alongside France, of course, Belgium, Australia and Canada,
00:49the Prime Minister will make a statement later on today.
