PRESS REVIEW - Thursday, July 31: We look at reactions to a call by Arab nations for Hamas to disarm in order to establish peace in the Palestinian territories. Also: French Olympic champion Léon Marchand smashes a record at the world championships in Singapore. And: is a new celebrity couple on the horizon? Speculation is rife after singer Katy Perry was seen dining with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau!
Reactions are pouring in to the French–Saudi summit on a two-state solution for Palestine. The UN General Assembly hosted high-level officials earlier this week for the summit, co-chaired by the French and Saudi foreign ministers. Notably absent were Israel and the US, both of which boycotted the event. The summit concluded with a seven-page document signed by attending dignitaries. Among the key outcomes: Arab nations – including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt – called on Hamas to disarm and relinquish control of Gaza, in a bid to end the devastating war in the territory. The Independent described the move as unprecedented and a major shift in policy from Arab nations. It also followed calls by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Canada’s Mark Carney to recognise Palestinian statehood.  The Lebanese newspaper L’Orient le Jour looks at the details of this statement signed by those present at the summit. It includes a 15-month timeline for the creation of a Palestinian state, returning control of the enclaves to the Palestinian authority and upon Egypt’s suggestion, a plan to reboot the economy with the injection of international funds to rebuild Gaza. The Saudi daily Arab News leads with a quote from Jordan’s King Abdullah, who calls the Gaza crisis “the worst in modern history.” In its editorial, ... Go on reading on our web site.

00:00Time now to take a look through the international newspapers with Diptiqa Laurent.
00:03Diptiqa, going to start with reactions to that UN conference that was co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia in New York that just wrapped up.
00:11Yeah, that's right. That UN General Assembly brought together high-level officials earlier this week,
00:16co-chaired, as you said, by Saudi Arabia and France, notably their foreign ministers.
00:22It did not include Israel or the US, however, because both those nations boycotted the summit.
00:27The Independent here noting that one of the big conclusions from that summit was this,
00:33Arab nations urging Hamas to disarm and end its rule in Gaza in a bid to end the devastating war in the territory,
00:42a move described as unprecedented and a major shift for Arab nations.
00:48It also follows calls, of course, from the British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and now Canada's Mark Carney
00:53to recognize Palestinian statehood.
00:57Now, in Lorraine Le Jour, a French-language Lebanese paper,
01:00it really goes into detail about what that seven-page report from that summit entails.
01:08It includes a 15-month timeline for the creation of a Palestinian state,
01:14returning control of the enclaves to the Palestinian Authority,
01:17and then, upon Egypt's suggestion, a plan to reboot the economy there
01:22with the injection of international funds to help rebuild Gaza.
01:26OK. Meanwhile, Edebjika, you've noticed that on the Arab News, the Saudi daily paper,
01:32they have the King of Jordan on the front page on the issue.
01:35Yeah, they're quoting King Abdullah, as you see here,
01:39who said that the Gaza crisis is the worst in modern history.
01:44It comes, as you see there, after settlers cut off West Bank Village water supply
01:48and dozens of Palestinians killed amid starvation that is pervading through the strip.
01:55In its editorial today, the paper says that countries should act unilaterally in recognizing Palestine
02:02and that it should not be an act of defiance but a pledge to uphold human dignity
02:07and end decades of suffering.
02:10And inside Arab News today, there's this page on page three,
02:14looking at all the celebrities taking a stand against the crisis in Gaza,
02:18including, you see there, Angelina Jolie, Susan Sarandon,
02:21and also Dua Lipa, the British Kosovo pop star.
02:25OK. Meanwhile, Edebjika here in France, somewhat of an unusual front page for Manny.
02:30It's a sports star, a swimmer, taking over.
02:33Yeah, Léon Marchand, the French Olympic swimmer,
02:36who has really splashed across all the pages today.
02:39Let me show you some of them beyond just L'Equipe,
02:41which, of course, here is a French sportswaper.
02:43You also have Le Parisien and also Le Figaro Sport.
02:48Le Parisien, of course, reporting on the fact that the swim champion
02:52smashed a world record in World Swimming Championship semifinals in Singapore on Wednesday.
02:58He beat the record for the 200-meter medley,
03:02smashing the previous record by more than a second,
03:04which doesn't seem like a lot, but it is, I think, in Swimming Eve.
03:08That previous record had been set by U.S. swimmer Ryan Lochte in 2011.
03:13That's why they're going with this headline,
03:15Léon Yssim, on its front page,
03:17and also noting that it comes pretty much one year
03:21after his exploits at the Paris Olympic Games.
03:25In fact, the paper's editor notes that sometimes for many athletes or sporting champions,
03:33the hardest thing is not reaching the top but staying there.
03:37Indeed, for Léon Marchand, he's really consolidated his Olympic wins
03:41with these new exploits in Singapore.
03:44Le Figaro, you see here, calls it a fabulous world record
03:48while he waits to see what happens in the final.
03:54That final will take place this Thursday.
03:56It's why L'Equipe, the French sports paper,
03:59which actually has published that record that he set there,
04:03it says that all eyes will be on Léon Marchand this Thursday
04:07as he competes in the final of the 200-metre medley race.
04:12Here's hoping he might maybe break some new records.
04:15OK, well, good luck to him.
04:16I also feel sorry for the person who lost his record by a second.
04:20It happens.
04:22So a lot of eyes here in France on that French swimmer,
04:24but some also looking across the Atlantic to a former Canadian prime minister.
04:29Yeah, that's right.
04:30Justin Trudeau was seen dining with Katy Perry in Montreal
04:35at an upmarket dining establishment, the New York Times tells us.
04:40Now, the former Canadian prime minister separated from his wife two years ago.
04:45Katy Perry herself is single after her recent split from Orlando Bloom.
04:49They were spotted at this upmarket establishment in Montreal on Monday,
04:55right before her concert in Montreal, which Trudeau also attended.
05:00The New York Times noting that they had dinner,
05:03inviting a serving of speculation about what they were doing together,
05:08how well they know each other.
05:10Is it friendly?
05:11Is it more than friendly?
05:12Is this a new unlikely celebrity couple, Eve?
05:15In any case, for the Canadian broadcaster,
05:18it sort of looks at what skeptics might think about this.
05:22Is it a date, just dinner?
05:23It doesn't matter.
05:25It could have also been a strategic move, the website says,
05:29to rehabilitate their respective public images.
05:32Katy Perry's public image, of course, taken a battering
05:35since that cringy trip to space with Jeff Bezos' wife.
05:39And also the fact that her tour tickets are not selling well.
05:42Trudeau, he, well, he resigned from office amid chaos within his own political party,
05:46but also amid plunging popularity, according to PR experts cited here.
05:52It's clear the couple wanted to be seen,
05:54because they were seated right next to the window
05:56when they could have been seated at the back
05:58to avoid being caught in the public eye.
06:01Anyway.
06:02Okay, I'm going to decide not to...
06:03Each to their own.
06:04Each to their own.
06:04I'm going to decide not to comment anymore on that last story.
06:07Thanks a lot for that look at the international papers.
