Curtis: "Stef Diggs is exactly what you need"
Is Diggs the WR vet leader this group has needed? What should we expect from Diggs production/stat wise?
Transcript
00:00coming off of the knee injury but the knee knock on wood doesn't seem to be bothering him much at
00:04all uh but he is not going to ride the roller coaster he's there to work and everything that
00:08you've heard from players from coaches even his tone when speaking to media it seems like everyone
00:14is on board and loving him yeah yeah Steph yeah I feel like this is the at this point you can only
00:21compare you know apples to apples so at this stage of last year you had Judon embarrassing Gerard
00:28Mayo in front of everybody with the organization totally not having his back and this year you
00:34have the video whichever that was six weeks ago however long ago where he's doing something that
00:40whatever you want to say about it was bringing some questions to his off-season training
00:45immediately Vrabel addresses it with Karen Karishian the next day and then 72 hours later he's at
00:53Gillette Stadium smiling waving to the fans and the media that is what you do now it's a
00:59difference with Vrabel in charge who has the support of the organization and he has the respect of the
01:03people that he's coaching and last year and that to me is obviously it's not going to make them win
01:09games or lose games but last year they lost a lot of games instead of really winning them like last
01:16year they gave opportunity after opportunity to opponents they didn't line up right they were
01:20getting priest pre-snap penalties they were on discipline they were perfect way to put it and
01:25i don't know if this team's going to be great i think they're going to win 10 games but steph diggs
01:30is exactly what you need he's a guy that is incredibly talented has a hell of a lot to prove and this is
01:37it he's 32 31 years 32 years old so that's young for everybody except an nfl receiver because if he
01:44shows out this year and he plays well and he's a leader he's going to get one final shot at it
01:50but i think the biggest thing is and i didn't cut you off curtis but i think the biggest thing is
01:54this year because it's it it's interesting that you say like you you you fast forward a year from
02:02last year to where we are now if you go back the biggest thing for me is that there are no more
02:08questions like big glaring questions you know who your quarterback is you know what your offensive
02:15coordinator is right you know what your head coach is and what he's been able to do like
02:20there's no like oh how's van pelt like what's his look like as a play call or what's that gonna look
02:27like how's mayo gonna deal with you know when this happens or in a game was their offensive line coach
02:33not around last year or is that two years ago uh i thought the offensive line coach he left right
02:39left right no that was under bill adrian clem is that who that was clem with that was on the bill
02:43okay yeah they had last year was the o-line uh okafor the player who all right so you have the left
02:49tackle your big offseason acquisition right you like you know what you're or like you can pencil in what
02:55your left tackle is you brought up steph diggs like if steph diggs is healthy you know what your
02:59number one receiver should be i think that's the biggest thing this year is there's no more of these
03:05questions for now it's just okay can drake be good enough under mcdaniels can the defense the only
03:13question to mock i would say is the health of the defensive i was just going to say that because
03:19he's back mike rabel said he's fully back okay and players have said he's been amazing like whether
03:25they're in pads out of pads like he wants your 100 all the time and so i think health wise everything
03:31that may have gone on we're not sure it seems like it's in the okay so if now if your questions
03:36about your d coordinator who's going to be calling the game on sundays who's going to be the guy out
03:42there talking to whoever's wearing the green dot on the defense side of the football those questions
03:47are answered and i think that's the biggest thing of this year is like you know a lot of the questions
03:52that we had about last year's team at least we can say here are the answers now let's see how it
03:59plays out and i know shy was going to try his best but there are no more excuses for the quarterback
04:05there they have the coordinator who has got the the history on his side we know what he did with
04:11mac jones who we all believe to be an inferior quarterback to drake may some good highlights
04:16from him out in san francisco though of drake may you mean mac jones mac jones sorry i i missed that
04:25but i will definitely did you see them you mean an underthrown ball no no i saw some good slow-mo
04:30nice highlights well that was actually real speed that's no no i'm saying yeah i'm just saying i mean
04:37i don't know if kyle shanahan gets can't get something out of you then there's a reason justin
04:42fields got 20 million dollars a year and mac jones got three and a half i'm gonna i'm gonna find the
04:46highlight i saw because brock purdy got paid so mac jones is just there to hold the clip the number that i
04:51care about is 22 touchdowns 11 interceptions that's what mac jones had in his rookie season
04:55with this coordinator with lesser weapons around him i saw some throws by drake may over the week
05:01they look spectacular uh people said that he was pop douglas popped with drake may right uh whatever
05:07the case is they have a schedule and a coaching staff with a roster that you should be over 500 with
05:15no matter what anybody says if he if drake may has a bad year people are going to be saying damn
05:21you we might have picked the wrong guy right i don't think you can blame the mcdaniels
05:26hey guys enjoy the show i hear curtis and wiggie and you're talking about the pats and i was gonna
05:32ask curtis last year when they had signed gerard mayo uh i hang with a lot of diehard pats fans
05:39and several of them said that was going to be a debacle from the beginning and they were actually
05:43shocked that uh craft and the whole crew would sign up this guy with no experience
05:50on a technical promise whatever and yet many people said oh no give him a chance well we saw
05:56how it worked out and i was just curious whether curtis would say he may have been on board with the
06:01people i know were saying or was he in the other camp saying this probably may work out let's hope
06:07for the best i was just curious what his opinion was of that prediction so i think two things can be
06:13true one gerard mayo did not do a good job last year i celebrated after they beat the bangles i may
06:20have been premature with my victory lap but i would have loved to see what gerard mayo would do with josh
06:27mcdaniels this defensive coordinator uh from the lions that they brought in with steph diggs with this
06:34off season of spending and with the support of ownership because i believe that robert craft
06:40kept his word and then the second gerard mayo was struggling right distanced himself and did nothing
06:47to make it better i thought gerard mayo had a bad year coaching i don't think he's going to coach again
06:52he's clearly not a great coach in nfl but we don't know if he's not a great coach in the nfl they set
06:57him up for failure right that's the biggest problem that's my thing is that it's like i i what robert
07:03craft did was hire a guy too soon and then fired him after one year so it's like you you can't talk
07:10about how you've known this for seven years that he was going to be the next head coach understanding
07:15that he was probably not understanding we all know that the patriots thought belichick was going to
07:20coach for two more years and then they were going to hand the car over to gerard mayo and it was going
07:24to be a team that was left with a lot of talent and ready to keep going in this process where bill
07:30belichick would have broken the shula record the second that that went out the window craft had to
07:36give him a couple years to figure it out and he didn't yeah i'm happy with rabel i think rabel is
07:41going to be a very good coach i think that robert craft had a good off season but i do not and i will
07:46never accept that they treated gerard mayo fairly no no no and and that's the thing when you look at
07:52when you're starting to see like any head coach who this is his first opportunity as a head coach
07:58right you know where you look at rabel he's been a head coach before that's different but a guy
08:03aaron glenn for example with the new york jets first opportunity if ownership is not 100 behind him
08:11to help him in any way meaning hey you can build the staff that you want where are some of the holes
08:18that we have on this roster that we need to fill and we're going to help you do that if ownership is
08:23not willing to do that then there is a very very good chance that that first year head coach is going
08:31to struggle and that's what happened with gerard mayo they didn't do anything to put him in the right
08:37position now if you gave him all the pieces and he struggles then you could go okay maybe we were a
08:44little bit premature on giving him the head coaching job but let's see what he does his second
08:49year they did none of those things and if you had asked anybody four years ago and you said so
08:55belichick's gonna leave the new coach is gonna come in it's gonna be bumpy but they will match their win
09:01total nobody would have said they would fire the coach right bill belichick according to many is the
09:06greatest coach of all time he won four games the next year gerard mayo wins four games gets fired
09:12and i saw a clip uh brady did a um i don't know whether it's his website something was going
09:19around this weekend i know it was recent because his face had had six surgeries since the last time
09:23i saw him he doesn't get surgery um it was uh bro talks um and he was talking about how essential it
09:30is that you have continuity because for him and his career he it was the same offense it was the same
09:36coach and he's like you can only build when you have a foundation to build off of and every year
09:42you get a new quarterback every year you get a new coach every year you get a new coordinator
09:46you're starting from the ground up and he's like that's why the chiefs have been so successful
09:51they're talented yes but while we're installing an offense with a quarterback that's nowhere near
09:56no offense right now what patrick mahomes is mahomes and andy reed are doing organic chemistry and
10:02figuring out a new play but the worst part about the gerard mayo thing is there were some decisions and
10:07i'm not saying he made great decisions the entire season but we all believe that he think he would
10:11have liked to see drake may from jump right and if he saw drake may from jump there could have been
10:16more wins on that on that season so it would have been better than the season that was and but that
10:20was the other problem right he didn't have enough power correct or at least it seemed like he didn't
10:25have enough power to say okay i want drake made it like to be our guy from day one mike vrabel came
10:32in here and said drake may's our guy from day one but not only that the guy that butchered the draft
10:38outside of drake may look at last year's draft with elliot wolf it's an abomination that guy
10:43kept his job and gerard mayo got fired right the guy that said you can't play drake we all believe
10:50it was elliot wolf right that said you couldn't play drake shot a wolf so elliot wolf according to
10:57mago uh made a decision that you wolf at where you had drake may clearly winning the battle
11:03gerard mayo made it abundantly clear to everybody that drake may won the quarterback contest over
11:09the summer and then you fire him yeah and you retain the guy that decided to do the wrong thing
11:16do you think we'll ever hear from him like will five years down the road is he going to talk to
11:20somebody whether it's karen garigian or write a book like there has to be if i'm gerard mayo and i
11:26understand he's making money and not having to do anything right now but his name has been dragged
11:31through the mud and for for a guy who i'm sure felt like the craps were family were family that
11:38must be really hard to keep your mouth shut and know that you were basically screwed for a season
11:43and and to hear players now say like oh we've got a real coach nothing against mike vrabel like yeah
11:47they've got a real coach now but was he given the opportunity to be a real coach for those guys last
11:52year i appreciate you know thunder and the organization maybe maybe if he if there's ever a chance where he
11:58wants to get back in whether it's college and he goes somewhere and they're asked hey what happened
12:02in new england maybe he says that you know i don't think he goes down the disrespectful road but i think
12:08he goes down more of the respectful road just like things didn't work out the the the when you start to
12:13look at these situations like mike vrabel and that's the difference and i think that's what ownership has
12:19to do is allow the guy who's going to be you know driving that ship staring that ship say okay what do
12:27you need us to do as an ownership group to help you so we can ultimately you know get to where we want
12:34to get to and they're doing that with mike vrabel they're allowing him to do that elliot wolf i think
12:39is probably now just a guy in the corner where his voice doesn't even make a lot like i think that if
12:46if will campbell doesn't perform well i don't think we're sitting here criticizing elliot wolf
12:55ah neutralized bam i think we're sitting here criticizing mike vrabel and his decision to draft
13:02will campbell fourth overall no i think i think wolf becomes the scapegoat i think we might criticize
13:08vrabel but like he won't i think you're both right i think that wiggy and i and whom and others
13:15will say that clearly vrabel was in charge it's his team shefter and reese reported as much but
13:21the organization will use him as oh yeah they'll fire him and i'm not disputing that but i think
13:26every i think 95 percent of patriots fans all think that vrabel is the shot caller up there so if
13:36campbell doesn't pan out they'll fire elliot wolf but i think it'll be well vrabel why did you take
13:42a guy at a position who maybe not might not have been a left tackle if they move him to god or
13:49those sort of things yeah whatever especially if any of the other offensive linemen that were taking
13:53in the next 15 picks are good right yeah i mean i think it what will happen to vrabel is he won't
13:58lose his job but at least not tighter and right i mean if if will campbell can't play left tackle
14:03they are cooked yeah there's some issues there are major issues if you can't because not only if he
14:08can't play left tackle and then you move him down in the god you are now in the territory of
14:13what the hell were you doing wasting your fourth overall pick on a god at least to be fair they
14:18need a left guard too so right but who's wasting at least with bill you can criticize them all day
14:24long and taking cole strange at like number 20 right all right i'll give you if you want to take a
14:29guard there but the fourth overall pick you wasted on a god if that's um that ultimately happens
14:36but didn't they trade out of the trent mcduffie pick to take cole strange they did 23rd that was
14:41one of the dumber picks they could have traded for tyreek hill with the same ammunition they used
14:45to get cole strange so and i'm not saying that that's going to happen but if that's a bridge we
14:50have to cross you know what greg hill will say when when and if we say when and if will campbell's a
14:55bust it's all gerard mayo's fault because had he just lost the last game yeah you're not taking
15:01fourth overall you could have had a dual cotta right who they say looks like a hall of famer
15:06um with the giants exactly all right well we will hear from mike rabel this morning at 10 15 full pad
15:12practice starts at 10 30 at gillette
