Many students are currently going through university clearing. What do you think… is university still the best route for young people, or are trades like plumbing or electrical work a better choice?

00:00Practical courses for practical people. I don't think that the answer to everything is go to university.
00:05I understand why Tony Blair did it, because the number of graduates we have put us so far down the league tables.
00:13But making vocational and practical skills a university course is a waste of time and money, and they just build up a debt.
00:22I don't think it should be as important as it is. It seems like these days everybody goes to uni.
00:26I know both my sons are going to uni at the moment, but I just think you could do yourself far more better.
00:32You could be far better off if you do go into a trade, do an apprenticeship, learn a skill, be a plasterer, a plumber.
00:39Like you say, you can earn a lot of money doing that still, and we still need those people.
00:43So I just think it would be good if people could encourage younger people to diversify a little bit.
00:49That doesn't mean it is the best way. I don't think university is the best way or necessarily ever has been the best way.
00:55It's alright for some, but not for others.
