On Friday's edition of Zolak and Bertrand, the guys were joined by Patriots right tackle, Morgan Moses following the conclusion of the team's training camp practice.
00:00We now welcome him in after a practice here today, day number two Patriots training camp.
00:04How are you, sir?
00:05Man, I'm blessed to be out here today, man. Thank you.
00:08It's good to have you. Like, we haven't had a chance to talk to you since you became a member of this team.
00:12But it looks like you're going to be the most veteran guy.
00:15And how much do you have to change coming here to learn this system with the way McDaniels calls it, the protections, working with Coach Marone?
00:23How hard is that right now for you, even being a veteran?
00:26I don't think it's much of a change, man, because when you come in the building every day and you're eager to learn and get better,
00:31and you know that your ceiling is still high as a player, no matter how many years you've played, it's the opportunity of growth.
00:38So being able to come here with these guys and learn this offense and see things that, you know, Josh sees.
00:42And then obviously, you know, Mike Rabel going over there has played the game at a high level and coached the game at a high level, man.
00:48It makes you open your eyes and say, hey, look, I got a lot of room to get better.
00:51And so when you step on that field, you have the opportunity of growth.
00:54So every team has their goals in a camp, which I'm sure you guys have covered in your meetings.
00:59But do you have personal goals for yourself, things that you want to get out of a camp, given that you've been through this before?
01:05You're a veteran.
01:05You know how it goes.
01:06What do you do for yourself at this time of year?
01:08I mean, it's a blessing to stay, the greatest is grass every day, man.
01:11You know, so you can't take that lightly.
01:13And then obviously, you know, we got a young group of guys on this team and in our room.
01:18So just being able to come out here and compete and have the opportunity to share, you know, your mindset of the game and guys willing to learn from you is encouraging.
01:27So it's part of the reason why I keep on coming out here because I love the game of football.
01:31So, you know, just being able to come out here and learn every day has been a blessing.
01:35I feel like you got a chance to build something here that you're going to be like one of those first guys that sort of came together.
01:39And I look at it with Vrabel back in 2001, they had 17 or 21, I think, undrafted free agents that Belichick brought in to sort of put that new Super Bowl type team together.
01:48You've got a lot of moving parts here with you, but are you excited to sort of attack it from that way?
01:52No, 100 percent, man.
01:53It doesn't matter where you get drafted or, you know, undrafted, drafted, first round, second, third round.
01:58You know, as long as you get to grace this grass every day, man, it's an opportunity to make this team.
02:02And I tell guys all the time, man, you know, I was a third round draft pick.
02:05You know, I'm probably like one of five that's still left in the offensive line for my class, which means a lot, man.
02:11Just, you know, it means I've been able to do things the right way and play a lot of good football and still be, you know, being able to go into year 12 and be wanted.
02:19You know, obviously that's a blessing as well.
02:20So just being able to come out here and just work with these guys and get better every day is the key.
02:25I've got to break this news to you.
02:27You probably haven't heard you on a practice field.
02:29I don't know much of a wrestling fan here where Hulk Hogan passed away today.
02:32No.
02:33Yep.
02:34Dang, man.
02:34What a downer that is.
02:36You know, I grew up in the world of WCW.
02:40A lot of people don't know what WCW is, you know.
02:42So it's a different culture, you know.
02:45But that's one of the greats, obviously, man.
02:47And, you know, praise out to his family and everything.
02:50And, you know, it's sad to see people go before their time.
02:53But, you know, he's had an exciting life.
02:55And, you know, I think a lot of people are grateful for what he's done in the entertainment business.
03:00So early on in camp, when you guys haven't really put on the pads yet, you're not able to fully do your job the way you do it on Sundays in the fall.
03:08Do you feel the offensive line might be at a disadvantage in some of these practices?
03:12Because the last couple of days, we see defensive players running by, whether it's you or any of the other guys on the offensive line.
03:19How real is that?
03:20Does that simulate the real thing this early in the camp?
03:23When I tell guys all the time, you know, obviously, it's hard to block these guys in jersey and shorts.
03:30But if you can get it done, man, it just makes the opportunity better when they got pads on.
03:34But you can't complain, man.
03:34You know what it is.
03:35Every day you come out here and, you know, Mike's done a great job of, you know, helping us out and helping us adjust to this game.
03:44And, you know, for us, man, it's a technique foundation game.
03:47And so you just got to keep on.
03:48You know, I tell guys all the time, they're like, hey, man, my hands are late.
03:50My hands are late.
03:51And I'm just telling them, man, it's time.
03:53And, you know, Rome wasn't built over in one day, you know.
03:55So we got to set the foundation and we got to build off of that.
03:57We got to have growth.
03:59We can't make the same mistakes that we made yesterday.
04:01And that's how you get better.
04:02And I do think there were plays today, you guys, in team periods working on some short passing stuff where Drake is hanging on to the ball on purpose because it feels like you guys kind of want to go through some of the motions of seeing things, visualizing things.
04:16And it's less about execution.
04:18It's more about install there.
04:19Is that a fair thing to say?
04:21No, 100%.
04:21You know, it takes all 11 to play football, man.
04:24You know, it takes the five offensive linemen to operate, the tight ends to get in there, which they're a part of the offensive line sometimes as well, the quarterback to operate, the running backs to pick up the secondary glitches and things like that.
04:34So it's just us five, you know, up front, man.
04:37It takes all 11 to operate the way you want to operate.
04:39And the more we can get out here on this grass and do those things, man, they'll become a well-oiled machine.
04:45How's Will Campbell doing?
04:46Man, love the guy, man.
04:47Love the guy, man.
04:48He's eager to learn.
04:49He's eager to just be great, man.
04:51And, you know, being a veteran guy, just having a guy in the room like that, man, it makes you want to come out every day and learn.
04:57Because he raises the bar, man.
04:59Like, he's intense.
05:01He wants to learn, man.
05:02You know, he's eager to learn.
05:04He's always pushing 1,000 miles per hour.
05:07So you love that out of a rookie.
05:08They got his locker next to you?
05:10Yeah, for sure.
05:10I mean, I got to tell him to move them big-ass cleats on the side.
05:14Hey, one of the biggest topics around the draft was the arm length of Will Campbell.
05:19How big of a deal do you think arm length is for tackles in the NFL?
05:22Man, as long as you can get to the spot, man, that's all that matters, man.
05:25And he's done a great job in these last couple of days.
05:27And we got a plethora of rushers up front that you see every day between Keon, Harold, Clavon, you know, all those guys that's out there every day that's giving their effort, man.
05:37So he's doing a hell of a job just from the classroom and taking it on the field and asking questions to me and getting work after practice and things like that.
05:46So, you know, he's definitely coming along, man.
05:48It's excitement from everybody to see what he's doing.
05:52And he's got all that energy like one of those puppies that were out here yesterday.
05:55Yeah, no, for sure, for sure, 100%.
05:57Yeah, you dog guy, Morgan?
05:58No, 100%.
05:59Yeah?
06:00You liked the dogs yesterday?
06:02Yeah.
06:02Look, my sons are probably like, Dad, when are we going to get our dog, man?
06:05So I told them after the season we're going to get one, so.
06:07Nice.
06:08Awesome.
06:08Appreciate your time.
06:09Always, man.
06:10Thanks for stopping by.
06:10Blessings, man.
06:11Appreciate y'all.
06:11Yes, sir.
06:12All right, Morgan Moses after practice here today in Foxboro.
06:1634 years old.
06:18He's a vet.
06:18He's done it a million times.
06:20And his passion for the game is what he said in the offseason was why he's here.
06:25Because he does not want to give it up.
06:26He loves football.
06:27He wants to keep playing.
06:28And that's why he's here.
06:29And they need him, quite frankly.
06:31And he said that.
06:32He goes, it's nice to feel like a team wants you and needs you.
