00:00They've won four out of their six qualifying matches and go safely into next Thursday's semi-final at Bombay.
00:07They beat Pakistan in Pakistan.
00:10West Indies 258 for seven, Pakistan 230 for nine, West Indies winning by 28 runs.
00:18And so the final positions in Group B look like this.
00:21Pakistan win the group with 20 points, England are second with 16 points,
00:26West Indies third with 12, although they have the best run rate in that group.
00:31One match played today in Group A, Australia beating Zimbabwe by 70 runs.
00:37Australia 266 for five, Zimbabwe 196 for six.
00:44Osworthy beaten finalists in the very first World Cup final against the West Indies in 1975.
00:50Pakistan have twice failed previously to get beyond this semi-final stage.
00:55Our commentators for this first semi-final are Ray Lingworth, Jack Bannister, and first of all, Tony Lewis.
01:01So the teams for this semi-final, Pakistan lining up with a familiar line-up.
01:08Mudassar Nazar was written off before the match.
01:12He had a stiff neck and was not considered for selection.
01:15So Pakistan read Rameez Raja, Mansur Akhtar, Salim Malik, Javed Miandad, Ijaz Ahmed, Imran Khan, Salim Yusuf,
01:23Wazi Makham, Abdul Qadir, Torsif Ahmed, and Salim Jaffa.
01:27And Australia, by now a settled line-up.
01:31Jeff Marsh, David Boone, Dean Jones, Alan Border, Mike Valletta at five, Steve Waugh, Greg Dyer, Simon O'Donnell, Craig McDermott, Tim May, Bruce Reid.
01:41Australia won the toss and decided to back first the umpires Dickie Bird and David Sheppard from England.
01:48To join the Australian innings, it's the second ball of the match, no runs on the board, and Imran Khan is bowling to Jeff Marsh.
01:58That's a chance, no it's not, it's a half-volley chance really, it's a second slip.
02:03Didn't quite carry, but a false shot by Jeff Marsh.
02:07There's no footwork there at all.
02:10Very exciting for the crowd here.
02:11Wazi Makham to Marsh.
02:23And a glorious throw up this time by Marsh.
02:26Wazi Makham is overpishing a little there and onto it like a shot and through covers for four.
02:33Australian now moving on to 55th for nought and we're in the 12th over.
02:37Nimran Khan calling up Tazi Vahmed, the off-spinner.
02:44Malik!
02:46Marsh a direct hit, out!
02:52Sally Mewsup, Sally Malik the fielder.
02:58Sally Malik gets the congratulations from his teammates.
03:02And the first Australian wicket falls, Jeff Marsh has run out for 31, 73 for 1, the Australian score.
03:11Well as often happens in one day cricket, it's a silly run out that turns the game.
03:16And Australia there going along beautifully, 73 for no wicket in the 18th over, no real problems.
03:22And then a silly little run out like that.
03:24Incoming batsman now will be Dean Jones.
03:30Well this is a fascinating confrontation now between Abdul Qadir,
03:35who has been such an effective bowler with 12 wickets in this competition,
03:41and Dean Jones, the outstanding stroke maker in the Australian line-up.
03:45Well, I don't know about your feeling, and there's a certain amount of theatre about Sally Mewsup behind the stumps.
04:04Well, well worth a shout.
04:06Dean Jones playing well outside the line there, the ball running on,
04:09and possibly just missing that leg stump.
04:11Oh, that's a glorious shot.
04:18When David Boone puts back the ball, he makes it look so very easy.
04:30Oh, dear, I know, I think Sally Mewsup might have been hurt there.
04:34The ball might well have hopped up off Dean Jones' pad,
04:40and that's a very difficult situation for a wicketkeeper,
04:43but the ball flies off the roll of the pad,
04:46and has clearly hit him in the mouth.
04:50That's Qadir now certainly getting a bit of bounce with that googly.
04:56And again, you see that catching right at the top of the pad,
05:00and looking to catch Mewsup over the front of the right eye, I would think.
05:04It's an extra bounce that Qadir's been getting there.
05:07You can see that ball well over the top of the stumps,
05:09and I suppose Mewsup was pretty unsighted,
05:12the ball comes between bat and pub.
05:15So poor Sally Mewsup retreats with a very nasty bang in the mouth,
05:21quite a lot of blood to be seen there,
05:24and it's Javid Miandad,
05:25the man you can never keep out of the action,
05:28who's donned the keeping gloves,
05:30and he looks as ready for action as a keeper,
05:32as he ever does as a batsman.
05:34That was a brutal blow there from David Boone.
05:52Boone, now let's just take a close look at that.
05:55Well, that might well have been a quarter and bowl,
05:57if Tawseev had had leather, adhesive hands,
06:01but I'm afraid he's done some damage.
06:05Have a look at it again.
06:07You see the awkward height it comes to Tawseev there.
06:12Tawseev having his injured left thumb taped.
06:14And the over-eight slowed considerably by these two interruptions.
06:23Injury to the wicket-keeper Salim Youssef.
06:27Now to Tawseev, just in the 22nd over.
06:3092 for one.
06:32Tawseev to Ball to Boone on 41.
06:34Oh, this offers a new dimension to keeping
06:53and appealing behind the stumps.
06:55Javid Mirandad is the substitute keeper,
06:58and he went up for something.
07:02Salim Jaffa coming back for his
07:04second bowl of the innings.
07:07Started off with a new ball.
07:09Start to the 23rd over.
07:1294 for one.
07:14He'll be bowling to Dean Jones on six,
07:16with Boone on 43.
07:32Ah!
07:34Wonderful, a bit of sprinting that by Dean Jones.
07:41I don't think Javid was ever in danger of
07:43not removing the bails with this one.
07:45It was a very tight run.
07:47Great throw.
07:49You see Javid, the whole lot goes.
07:51That's found a gap.
08:01Nicely controlled shot by Dean Jones.
08:04But one on top of that then.
08:05101 for one.
08:22The 100 coming up off 135 volts.
08:26Another super shot by Jones.
08:43Another super shot by Jones.
08:45Well, Salim Jaffa's just getting Dean Jones in the groove there outside off stump.
08:53Not only his line is straying, but his length too on this perfect pitch.
08:59Changing the Pakistan attack now.
09:02Introducing the sixth bowler, Salim Malik.
09:05And that's 50 for David Boone.
09:23And he's played pretty well this morning.
09:25Set off very confidently against the quicker bowlers.
09:28And he's continued to make runs throughout the morning in a very confident style.
09:37Oh, and that's a bonus for Pakistan.
09:40Javid, absolutely delighted there.
09:43He's got a stump in down the leg side.
09:45You can't control him.
09:48A score of 155 for two wickets.
09:50We're in the 31st over.
09:52And that's David Boone.
09:54Stump behind that bowl.
09:55Salim Malik for 65.
09:57In the swinger down the leg side.
10:05Boone goes walkabout.
10:06Not the quickest bit of stumping, but out goes the middle stump.
10:12And the new batsman, Alan Border.
10:16Starts the 32nd over then in Tarsif Ahmed.
10:19He's bowling to Dean Jones on 38 and 155 for two.
10:28Dean Jones playing one of the more aggressive innings.
10:39But then bowled by Tarsif.
10:42Making room.
10:43Only 46 balls.
10:45Bowled for 38.
10:47Score 155 for three.
10:49And that's Pakistan right back in the game.
10:53Tarsif again.
10:54And the room that Jones makes.
10:56That's his undoing.
10:57Making room to a perfectly straight ball.
11:01A bit quicker perhaps than he thought.
11:03And a big double blow for Pakistan.
11:08And the new batsman, Valletta.
11:12Salim Yusuf there still being treated for the painful blow he received off the roll of the pad when Tarsif was bowling.
11:21News from the dressing room is that Tarsif Ahmed, having rolled his 10 overs, has now gone off to hospital to have his hand stitched.
11:31He took a fierce return blow during his spell.
11:37And instead of him on the field is Manzul Elahi.
11:41And the 41st over.
11:43Australia 203 for three.
11:46The letter on 33.
11:47Border on 14.
11:48And Mancarn is bowling from the college end to Alamborda.
12:01About to flush it that away.
12:03And a vain attempt to full length dive there.
12:06But it wasn't a mackerel.
12:07But the ball speeding away for four.
12:09Run right now.
12:11Over five.
12:12Eight overs left after this.
12:14And still that score of 272-80 beckoning them.
12:18And again that's a fine throw and Alamborda not really troubling to look at the umpire just keeping continuing his run.
12:31There's Alamborda paying the penalty.
12:38Once you take the fielder like Mansur Acta's arm on.
12:43Well a direct hit you're out.
12:46And that's exactly what happened.
12:47So that's the fourth Australian wicket to fall.
12:54Alamborda run out for 18.
12:57215 for four.
13:02And the new batsman Steve Waugh.
13:05The great hero Imran Khan.
13:27In his last match.
13:32On his home patch Lahore.
13:34Has done what the crowd have been longing him to do.
13:37He's uprooted the sumps.
13:38Mike Palletta.
13:40Needn't be too disappointed I don't think.
13:43A very brave little innings that.
13:44A 48 played in perfect tempo with the needs of the side.
13:49But Australia now at 2.36 for five.
13:52And we're in the 47th over.
13:56Beautiful piece of bowling by Imran there.
13:59Right into that leg stem.
14:00Saw the batsman making room.
14:02Followed him.
14:03And right into the block hole.
14:05Absolute suicide.
14:23Simon O'Donnell had been in there two balls.
14:25Steve Waugh called him.
14:28And O'Donnell wanted nothing to do with the call at all.
14:30Wasn't a difficult run out.
14:35But wait.
14:39Wait, wait.
14:40There is something.
14:46That's not on here.
14:47Now the umpires have reversed that decision.
14:50And have said Steve Waugh was not out.
14:53And O'Donnell was.
14:54Which means that the wickets are broken.
14:58Before Waugh had crossed.
15:05Very useful little nick indeed.
15:11Well that's where the runs come at this time of innings.
15:14Little outside edge.
15:16Tips of the wicketkeeper's fingers.
15:18And four runs for Australia.
15:19All too much for Greg Dyer I'm afraid.
15:31No sort of technique.
15:33Not sure if he knew what he was doing.
15:37Well honestly Raymond.
15:38Imran could do no wrong.
15:39Whatever he did here.
15:39Now we just went Australia.
15:42Really want to be accelerating.
15:44Imran Karns.
15:45Showing what a world class bowler is.
15:47Magnificently bowled over.
15:48Really putting the brake on them.
15:50Taking a couple of wickets.
15:51The run out.
15:51He caused the problems.
15:53The lot.
15:53And there again.
15:54You see Dyer completely beaten.
15:56For pace.
15:57Everything there.
15:58Lying the lot.
15:59All the lot going over.
16:00Well what a farewell for Imran Karn.
16:16He says he'll retire after this series.
16:18So this is effectively his last over on Lahore.
16:23The ground where he is brought up as a boy.
16:25And bowled right through his career.
16:27And he says farewell to Craig McDermott.
16:30McDermott bowled Imran Karn for one.
16:352.49 for nine.
16:38The last over then to be bowled by Salim Jaffer.
16:43Jaffer's bowled six overs so far.
16:45North of 45 quite expensively by his own standards.
16:51Steve Waugh is facing.
16:53He's 40 not out.
16:542.49 for eight.
16:56Yeah a little bit of a gamble here by Imran.
16:58Because Jaffer's not bowled particularly well today.
17:01And just to bring him back for this last over.
17:03Could be expensive.
17:06Beautiful strike.
17:07What a lovely shot.
17:09That's six.
17:12There are not many places in the world where you can be hit for six in total silence.
17:16When there are 30,000 on the ground.
17:17But that was quite a shock to the Pakistan system.
17:21What a lovely strike by Steve Waugh.
17:32Beautifully placed.
17:33Now long on has moved straighter.
17:35That's exactly where the ball went.
17:37Six runs to long on.
17:39Steve Waugh is now at 20.
17:40255 for eight.
17:52Another tremendous blow by Waugh.
17:55And that's four runs this time.
17:59Salim Jaffer's just bowing the sort of length that is possible to pick up.
18:03Short of a length.
18:04I'm sure he'd prefer to be bowling a much fuller length altogether.
18:09Well I did say it was a gamble by Imran.
18:11And it's certainly proven so.
18:13Jaffer's just about the right pace when the slogs on.
18:16And unless he gets into a very very full length right into the batsman's feet.
18:19He's absolutely just right for picking up.
18:25So four more balls left.
18:26And Steve Waugh.
18:28Who's involved in that run out at one stage with O'Donnell.
18:30And started to walk out.
18:31Was called back.
18:32Australia might be pleased he was regained out there.
18:38He's going for one.
18:40May is his partner.
18:41Can May turn and run quickly back?
18:43He's got to try.
18:44And he does.
18:47Two more to Australia.
18:492.61 now.
18:51For eight.
18:52They'll try for two.
19:16Two runs.
19:24Mansour Alahi.
19:25The fielder out there.
19:27He's a substitute fielder by the way.
19:29Torsi went off to have a hand repaired.
19:31Fourteen off the over so far.
19:40Last ball of the Australian innings.
19:48That's nicely flicked off the toes.
19:50It'll be...
19:50Oh!
19:50It'll be...
19:51Four.
19:55Well, well.
19:56That went straight to the fielder.
19:58It somehow beat the fielder.
20:00That's four runs for Waugh.
20:01What an invaluable contribution by him.
20:07Eighteen runs came off that last over.
20:10Quite a disappointment for Imran Khan.
20:12And the final total.
20:14Two.
20:15Sixty-seven for eight.
20:17And Steve Waugh ending up with 32.
20:20So Australia and innings,
20:22which began with great promise,
20:23with an opening partnership of 73 with Marsh and Boone.
20:27And then on to 155,
20:29with Boone and Jones going great guns.
20:32Suddenly stumbled and stuttered at 155.
20:34Boone and Jones went for the same score.
20:37It was then a resuscitation, really,
20:39by Valletta and Borda.
20:40But then collapsed again.
20:41O'Donnell nought.
20:42Dire nought.
20:43McDermott won.
20:44And a little flourish by Steve Waugh towards the end.
20:4732 not out.
20:48The Australian score, 267 for eight.
20:52And as for the bowling,
20:53what a marvellous example set by Imran Khan.
20:55His last major bowling stint in international cricket
20:58at the Qaddafi Stadium.
21:00Ten overs, one maiden, three for 36.
21:04Tough going for the young Seamers,
21:06Jaffa and Akram.
21:07But Abdul Qadir and Tosi for spinners.
21:09They did well by their skipper Imran.
21:12Ten overs, nought for 39, Qadir.
21:15And ten overs, one for 39, Tosi.
21:18And so Pakistan to win this match now
21:19have 268 to win
21:21at a run rate of 5.36.
21:26Well, we'll join the Pakistan innings.
21:29The first overs, the third ball,
21:31the batsmen of one each,
21:32Ramiz Raja, Mansur Akhtar,
21:34and McDermott is bowling to Mansur.
21:44He shies.
21:45He's out.
21:47Well, well, what a start for Australia.
21:49A disaster for Pakistan.
21:51Ramiz Raja has run out.
21:56It started with Mansur Akhtar
21:57hitting the ball into the ground,
21:59but to Borda's left hand,
22:00that's the key of this one.
22:01And he was able to fling the ball back,
22:04and Ramiz had gone far too far off the pitch.
22:09So Ramiz Raja has run out for one,
22:12and Pakistan sensationally are two
22:15for the loss of one wicket.
22:18Borda's left hand, the pivot, the turn.
22:23The accurate throw.
22:27Well out.
22:29Salim Malik is the next batsman in,
22:32number three.
22:34Bruce Reid, the bowler.
22:37Oh!
22:37Well, very lucky indeed,
22:39but four runs.
22:45Not a shot that Salim Malik will be proud of,
22:48but somehow just managed to steer it
22:50through that vacant second slip area.
22:59That's a better shot.
23:00Salim Malik can be an absolutely effortless player.
23:11Very annoying over indeed for Bruce Reid.
23:14One minute he's finding the edge,
23:15next minute he's finding the middle.
23:1737 for one, the score.
23:20Mansur is nine.
23:21Salim Malik is 25.
23:23This is McDermott into Mansur Akhtar.
23:25I'm out!
23:26Well, what have I done?
23:28I've done it again.
23:29Batting impossible for Mansur Akhtar.
23:32And well-bowled Cray McDermott.
23:34Over goes the middle stump.
23:36For so long, his line had drifted down
23:37leg side, McDermott's,
23:39and that is absolutely middle to middle.
23:42And so Pakistan,
23:43a great rumble of discontent around the stadium,
23:46lose their second wicket for 37.
23:48We're in the ninth over.
23:50And alongside me is Ray Ellingworth.
23:52Well, that's just the wicket that Australia wanted.
23:55They run out early on, give them a start.
23:58McDermott's been bowling down the leg side,
24:00being plucked up for ones and twos.
24:02But this time getting it just right.
24:03Very full length, right up onto that middle stump.
24:06And that really just set this game up now.
24:08Pakistan needing 268 to win at 5.36.
24:12And with two wickets already gone for 37,
24:15Australia really backing the game.
24:17So 37 for two.
24:19Salim Malik is 25.
24:21Javid Meandar taking guard.
24:22And the bowling figures,
24:24McDermott is in his fifth over.
24:27He has conceded so far.
24:3016 runs.
24:32One for 16.
24:33And read four overs,
24:34north for 20.
24:36Well, look at that.
24:37Well, it would certainly have been a struggle there
24:39if I hadn't had gone,
24:40but Meandar'd send Salim Malik back.
24:43But Craig McDermott will certainly have to bowl
24:46on that leg stump to Javid Meandar,
24:48though he certainly will be whipped away on that leg side.
24:50But that's nine overs now completed.
24:5338 for two.
24:55Salim Malik on 25.
24:56And Meandar just off the mark with that single.
24:58And that's out.
25:09Steve Waugh's first delivery there.
25:12And Salim Malik is looking to play a little bit early
25:15and the ball just lobbing up to mid-off.
25:18And Craig McDermott took the surprisingly simple catch up mid-off.
25:24So Salim Malik has gone
25:26and Pakistan are in some sort of trouble.
25:30There's Salim Malik now,
25:32caught by Craig McDermott.
25:36Bowled by Steve Waugh
25:38for 25.
25:40And the score now on 38 for three.
25:43And we're in the 11th over.
25:45The new batsman coming to the wicket
25:47is the Pakistan captain, Imran Khan.
25:51But at the moment, Pakistan in deep trouble.
25:52There's a shout straight away for LBW.
25:59And that must have been pretty close.
26:01A slower delivery.
26:07Yes, that was very well bowled by Steve Waugh.
26:09Well, that was the wicket that Australia wanted
26:20and Bruce Reid there getting Mayandad to edge that.
26:24But in one day cricket,
26:25a lot of the slips go very, very wide
26:27and certainly Boone is exceptionally wide there.
26:29But that would have been a straight forward catch for first flight.
26:32As it is, just four runs.
26:33And that edge in that, genuine edge
26:37and really slipped this up to be awfully wide there.
26:45Scoring rate up to six and a half and over now.
26:48Tremendous pressure on Pakistan.
26:50As Steve Waugh comes into ball.
26:53To Imran.
26:54Digging by the roar.
27:02That's gone for four runs.
27:03And down the wicket there, Imran.
27:23And taking a chance.
27:24Didn't get there.
27:25Slow ball.
27:27The ball going over mid-wicket for four runs.
27:29But not a very positive shot.
27:31Now, that's four more runs.
27:52Sam Rodolfich is just a little short there.
27:54And Imran's really quick on that.
27:56Cracking it away just behind the square on the offside.
27:58So, Imran now begin to open his shoulders.
28:01Begin to look for runs.
28:02One of the bachelors has got to take chances.
28:04And I think Imran will be the one to do it.
28:06Leaving Javid to play the anchor role.
28:11Switching the bowling from the college end to the pavilion end.
28:15Here's O'Donnell.
28:16Big shout for Abu Dhabi then from Simon O'Donnell.
28:25But leg by signal by David Shepard.
28:28Seem to be drifting down the leg side.
28:30There's a ball a very full length.
28:38So, I've got O'Donnell excited.
28:41Hitting meandered straight on the toe.
28:44But no doubt slanting down leg side.
28:48Oh, well.
28:50Shall we call it a drop?
28:51I don't know.
28:52Tremendous effort to get anywhere near that.
28:54A dive.
28:55Outstretched right hand.
28:59A really brilliant effort by Alan Border at cover.
29:02Yes, it was.
29:03And who knows what effect this will have on the match.
29:07Marvellous attempt.
29:08And to his wrong right side.
29:11One of those that sometimes stick.
29:13That's a delightful shot from Imran Khan.
29:25A model.
29:29Now he should wait for the ball to come onto the bat.
29:31And he just eased that wide at mid-on.
29:34And between mid-wickets.
29:37So the 100 comes up now.
29:39101 for three.
29:43Simon O'Donnell now to go to Imran Khan.
29:53And that's what most of the crowd came here to see.
29:57Imran Khan moving on to 50.
30:00Coming off 73 balls.
30:02With four fours.
30:04Had a little bit of fortune when he first came in.
30:06Could well have been LBW first ball.
30:08Another shout next ball.
30:09But since then he's played pretty well.
30:13Tim May to bowl to Imran.
30:16126 for three.
30:22Well that was a bit of a head-up shot.
30:24And thick inside edge down to McDermott a deep square.
30:27But the field's been changed again.
30:29And I think Alan Border's getting nearly right now.
30:32He's got himself a short cover and deep mid-off.
30:34But he's still got that man in front of square.
30:39On the cover boundary.
30:40And I wouldn't be surprised to see Jabba Mjanda play the reverse sweep for long.
30:44If that's the field that we're going to keep.
30:45There it goes.
30:54As Raymond Dillingworth has forecast.
30:57I don't think you can really afford to leave well over 90 degrees in a field like this unmanned.
31:04And really Border's getting himself into quite a tangle with his offside field for young Tim May.
31:13Alan Border coming on himself to bowl to Imran Khan.
31:16Yes, he's giving him out, caught behind.
31:24We were thinking of shouting for stumping at first because the keeper whipped the bales off.
31:28But in fact he's being given out by umpire Dickey Bird at the far end.
31:32So Imran Khan departs, caught by the wicket-keeper Dyer off Alan Border for 58.
31:45He's scored 150 for 4 and we're in the 36th over.
31:50Having a big swing.
31:53Just the faintest of edges, decided umpire Bird.
31:58Imran Khan getting a huge reception.
32:02On what he says will be his last appearance on this ground.
32:09The new batsman.
32:11Left-hander Wazim Akram.
32:17And that's 54 Java Melnod.
32:22How well he's played.
32:25Take no chances.
32:26But never miss an opportunity to score.
32:29Score moving on to 154.
32:31Score for four.
32:34And the 50 made from 79 balls with four boundary hits.
32:46Oh, that's a massive hit.
32:49Miles in there.
32:51Over long off.
32:52Six runs.
32:53And that just shows what a dangerous hitter Wazim Akram is.
33:06Craig McDermott, not the slowest bowler.
33:08But that went to many a mile and carried 20 yards over the rope.
33:12And they all shouted sixer, sixer.
33:16But it did go a long way.
33:18A very high do.
33:25That's a massive hit for six there.
33:28Swept away over mid-wicket.
33:29And that's just what Wazim Akram came in for.
33:32And Dermott now to Wazim Akram.
33:45And yes, that's the wicket that Australia wanted.
33:47Wazim Akram looking really dangerous.
33:51But there he is now.
33:53Wazim Akram bowled Craig McDermott for 20.
33:56The score on 177 for five now.
33:59And we're in the end of the 39th over.
34:01Full length Yorker right into the leg stump there.
34:13That's exactly the right place to bowl it.
34:15And all great to McDermott.
34:21And this brings to the crease Ejaz Ahmed.
34:25Just 19 years old.
34:27His 21st one day international.
34:31What a splendid way to get off the mark.
34:5376 off nine overs.
34:55That will take some getting even with a world-class player like Javid Meander.
34:59The scoring rate of nearly eight and a half, 8.44.
35:05That's in the air.
35:07It's caught.
35:10Ejaz Ahmed has been caught.
35:13At deep backwards square leg.
35:16Now the feeler himself is right in the sunshine as far as I'm concerned down there.
35:20It looks like Dean Jones.
35:24I'm sure it is.
35:25And the handshake's all around.
35:27Well, you hear wickets.
35:28Well, you don't hear the wickets.
35:30All you hear is silence when the trailers strike.
35:33But now I think the truth is getting through to Pakistan.
35:36That this is a considerable target.
35:39And Ejaz Ahmed, therefore, is out.
35:41Caught by Dean Jones.
35:43Bowled by Reid.
35:441.92 for six.
35:50Huge cheers around the ground as wicketkeeper Salim Youssef comes to the crease.
35:56Steve Ball comes back at the pavilion end.
36:02Beautifully placed.
36:03And a lovely stroke of contrast.
36:05Valletta's the fielder.
36:06Might have gone for three.
36:12Javid settles for two.
36:14The 200 comes up.
36:17200 off.
36:20255 balls.
36:23The score, 201 for six.
36:25Oh, well, that was an invention.
36:38We won't call that a stroke.
36:40We'll call that a total invention by Javid Mjandad.
36:44He plays the reverse sweepers if it's just a five-finger exercise.
36:47Well, Jack Bannister will know more about strokes like that than I do.
36:50I think I do.
36:50This one went beyond the realms of improvisation.
36:53Let's see what happened here.
36:55There we go.
36:56The upper edge.
36:56That's what we'll call it.
37:06Oops.
37:07Well, are we now seeing the end of the Pakistan challenge?
37:11Javid Mjandad makes it plain that he did get contact.
37:14But the hero of that particular moment was Bruce Reid, who was cool under fire, kept his rhythm going.
37:20And he's bold, Javid Mjandad, who scored 70.
37:25And the score is 212 for seven wickets.
37:32Well, this was the crude shot that eventually Javid was committed to.
37:38He's placed his innings pretty well while Imran was there.
37:41But when Imran got out, he didn't really ever step up a gear.
37:47And the new batsman, leg spinner, Abdul Khadir.
37:50Is there even more inspiration to come from Abdul Khadir?
37:55Score the most famous eight-knot out against West Indies at Karachi.
37:59And he hit Courtney Walsh for six.
38:01Well, that's the target.
38:02But this is Steve Waugh.
38:03Oh, that's whipped away to the boundary.
38:10One of the rare loose deliveries from Steve Waugh.
38:12Short and down the leg side.
38:13And Salim Yusuf whips that one away.
38:25Tremendous blow.
38:26Four signals.
38:39Four signals.
38:40Four signals.
38:41And a leg by off that over from Steve Waugh.
38:43And the game is opened again.
38:45227 for seven.
38:56He's gone.
39:02Caught behind.
39:03The faintest nick and Salim Yusuf near it.
39:05He was off.
39:06Just pulled down short of that ball by Craig McDermott.
39:09And the little nick taken by Greg Dyer.
39:12What a brave effort that was by Salim Yusuf.
39:15Caught Dyer.
39:16Bull McDermott.
39:1721.
39:18And the eighth cricket goes down now for 236.
39:23Well, I was just saying how sensibly Salim Yusuf had been playing.
39:26And here he has a real crossbar.
39:28Yahoo.
39:29Faint top edge.
39:30Greg Dyer doing the rest.
39:32So Salim Jaffa is the man coming in.
39:37And this is Steve Waugh to Abdul Qadir.
39:42They might take two to Reid.
39:44They hesitate.
39:45They go.
39:47And they make it.
39:51Not the quickest fielder, Bruce Reid.
39:56Four runs.
40:13Inside edge.
40:17And Steve Waugh will be very relieved to see the end of this over.
40:20Well, this is what the four in the circle makes difference.
40:25In normal circumstances like these, you'd have had a fine leg on.
40:28But having to keep four men up, you've got to leave a gap somewhere.
40:31And the gap there is at fine leg.
40:33That's out.
40:40Another faint nick and two to Dyer.
40:43And so Pakistan lose their ninth cricket now for 247.
40:47We're in the 49th over.
40:49And Salim Jaffa just stretching his ambition beyond his talents.
40:54And McDermott good and steady.
40:56Safe line outside of Stump.
40:57Yes, McDermott's bow well today.
41:01Early on, he hurt a little bit on leg and middle.
41:04But since then, he's got that off-stump line just outside.
41:07And there you saw it again.
41:09Just outside of Stump.
41:10Just running away a little bit.
41:12And Salim Jaffa trying to heave it away on the leg side.
41:15And just a faint outside edge.
41:17The injured Tosif Amid comes in as the last man.
41:31Up it goes again.
41:32Five wickets for McDermott.
41:35And that is a moment of tremendous jubilation and achievement, I must say, for Australia,
41:41who have done brilliantly to come into Pakistan, up to Lahore, to get through, to beat Pakistan,
41:50the favourites in the competition, and win the match by 18 runs.
41:57Pakistan never quite recovered from their very shaky start.
42:00That run out in the first over of Ramiz Raja.
42:02And then three wickets down for 38.
42:06The long partnership, of course, resuscitated their hopes.
42:10112 between Imran Khan and by Javid Miendad.
42:14But then they rather limped along.
42:16Miendad, when he went, the score, 212.
42:19Seven wickets down then.
42:21It was rather a forlorn hope.
42:23Some brave hitting by Salim Yusuf.
42:25But in fact, it was all too much for Pakistan,
42:28despite their fine run in the preliminary group stages.
42:31The bowling, McDermott, 5 for 45.
42:35Reid was the next best with 2 for 41.
42:38And so, on to Calcutta go Australia.
42:41The victors here at Lahore by 18 runs.
42:45And the man of the match award deservedly to Craig McDermott for those five wickets.
42:54England field, Anand.
