00:00Because we're at training camp, but it'd be better if the Phillies had won that game last night.
00:04It was, to a certain extent, entertaining.
00:06We've got to at least acknowledge that.
00:08It was a bummer of a loss.
00:10And Lazardo, there's got to be some concern on him.
00:13So, look, we'll get to the Phillies.
00:14Trade deadline, by the way, if you don't know now, in one week.
00:17Thursday of next week, 6 p.m.
00:18So, we are one week away.
00:19We'll do a deep dive on the trade deadline today.
00:22We'll also do a lot on the Eagles.
00:25As we broadcast from training camp where the Bears practiced yesterday, will again today.
00:29Zach Vaughn will join our program at 7 o'clock.
00:31We look forward to talking to the Eagles star linebacker.
00:34We'll hear from Vic Fangio, his boss.
00:36Fangio at 940, a press conference later today.
00:39So, a lot to do.
00:40All of it with you on the phone lines at 215-592-9494.
00:45Rich Rich.
00:46Hello there, Joe.
00:47Hello there, Johnny.
00:48China did not win its first Olympic medal until 1984.
00:53Now, how do you explain that?
00:55They were boycotting.
00:56Oh, well, then that makes sense there.
00:59Yeah.
01:00They had, there was a rocky relationship with the International Olympic Committee, and they
01:07were, you know, in and out, in and out.
01:09They didn't want to participate.
01:10So, that Mal guy, Mal was not pro-Olympics.
01:13Oh, I don't think so.
01:14It does not appear that way.
01:16The Olympics may not have been pro-Mal.
01:18Probably not.
01:19But that was, L.A., 1984, that was such a big Olympiad for so many reasons.
01:27I didn't realize it at the time.
01:29Little Johnny Richie watching in Mechanicsburg, PA, on WGAL-TV 8, you know, with the rabbit
01:38ears.
01:39I really had to use the rabbit ears to get those to come in.
01:42Those Olympics meant a lot.
01:45That's a wild, that was a great Olympics, by the way.
01:47All right, we've got a great football team, obviously.
01:50We hope they repeat.
01:50We'll see if they can and will.
01:52Jordan Milano was something very interesting yesterday.
01:54We're not defending anything.
01:56He actually said we're not the defending champs.
01:58He doesn't want them to think in terms of defending.
02:00He wants them to obviously think in terms of, go get it again.
02:02As soon as he said that, Joe, I thought of you.
02:05Well, I didn't say that.
02:06I said they're the defending champs.
02:07I said they're not the champs.
02:09But you're, right, right, where, you know, they're no longer champions.
02:12I was like, ah, Joe's going to appreciate you.
02:14Even I would say they're the defending champs.
02:16There's a huge difference between what the players say and what the fans say.
02:19The players should say that.
02:20The fans don't have to.
02:21That's the difference.
02:22Oh, that's great.
02:22All right, so we'll get to that as we move through.
02:25We'll do a lot on the trade deadline out of the gate,
02:27but let's just start with last night.
02:30Good Lord.
02:31First off, if you look at the box score,
02:32you see 37 different Phillies pitchers pitched,
02:35and there's a reason for that.
02:37You know, Jesus Lizardo didn't go too long.
02:40Now, it wasn't one of those two-inning starts, but, oh, man.
02:43Yeah, so how concerned are we on Lizardo?
02:45It all fell apart so quick.
02:47It fell apart quick.
02:49John, how concerned are you on Lizardo?
02:50Not until the fifth inning on the bright side.
02:52The fifth inning, what happened was he just no longer could locate,
02:58and it wasn't by much.
03:00But doesn't it feel like the season?
03:02Didn't that inning to you feel like it?
03:04Because for me, it did.
03:05Yeah, because he was so exceptional for about two-and-a-half months this year,
03:09and then in the last month, it's like, what are we doing here?
03:12And so, I mean, look, my antenna's up on him.
03:16I think he's probably a bullpen guy in the postseason, but who knows?
03:20I mean, that's still to be determined.
03:22Remember, you've got to go through two more months keeping guys healthy.
03:24That includes Wheeler, right?
03:26That includes, you know, getting Nola healthy.
03:28Because if Nola doesn't get healthy,
03:29Lizardo starts in the postseason, I think.
03:32So I will just put out there my antenna for Lizardo concern has ratcheted up.
03:39And, by the way, that's a short-term, long-term thing.
03:41Short-term, I'm talking about October.
03:44Long-term, I'm talking about, like,
03:45is he the guy I'm hitching the wagon to for the next, you know,
03:48four, five, six years instead of Ranger or instead of, you know, whomever?
03:54Am I trading Painter?
03:56Am I trading Abel?
03:57No, because, well, I got Lizardo in my back pocket.
04:00Well, do I?
04:01Like, what do I have in my back pocket?
04:03So I think there's a lot there that's, I'll say, a bit complicated.
04:07Let me be clear.
04:08This is not skies falling.
04:09Lizardo's had a nice season.
04:11But he obviously has been really rocky over about the last month, month and a half.
04:14And I think it's fair to say that, you know,
04:16we've got to put that right on the table, right out of the gate.
04:19Your reaction to last night and him specifically at 2-1-5, 5-9-2, 94-94.
04:25Or, ironically, the bullpen actually pitched pretty well last night.
04:28I think there were five or six relievers that gave up nothing until the last two guys gave up runs,
04:32obviously with the ghost runner starting on second base and extra innings.
04:34So bullpen actually did a decent job.
04:36Lizardo did not.
04:382-1-5, 5-9-2, 94-94.
04:40All right.
04:40Let's get to the trade deadline.
04:42So, really, it's a double banger of a question or questions.
04:45Question one is, if they only get one major move, and I'm going to be honest with you guys,
04:52I think they will only have at a maximum one major move, I think.
04:57I think there's a better chance that they have no major moves than two major moves.
05:01But if they only have one major move, and we know all season we've been a lot of his ping-ponging back and forth.
05:08I mean, I've changed my mind 15 different times between should it be a reliever or should it be an outfielder.
05:13And even the Bryson Stott stuff has, for some people, brought into the focus,
05:18should it be a second baseman, although he did hit a home run last night.
05:21But question one, if it's only an outfielder or a relief pitcher, cards on the table today, which should it be?
05:28And question two, how aggressive do you want them to be?
05:32Because, you know, people have wavered on that as well.
05:34I will tell you this.
05:36The longer this season has gone on, the more my focus has become very clear.
05:41And believe me, I promise you guys, there have been plenty of twists and turns this year
05:44where I've thought relief pitcher is the more important spot for them to attack.
05:48I no longer do.
05:50And not because they actually did a decent job out of the bullpen last night.
05:53Because I think they're just more deficient, as I project, October in the outfield.
05:58I mean, I really do believe, and we've talked about it for a good portion of the year,
06:01and Middleton talked about it a couple days ago,
06:03I think they're going to throw starters into the bullpen.
06:05And I think the bullpen will look very different.
06:08Very, very, very different.
06:09He laid it out there for us, just plain as day.
06:11I laid it out before he laid it out.
06:12But I will say, John, it's predicated on does Nola come back healthy,
06:16which we don't know that Nola comes back healthy.
06:19We don't know that.
06:20You're right, but it's not just Nola.
06:22I mean, you've got a ton to work with.
06:26And meanwhile...
06:27So you think it's outfielder, John?
06:29Absolutely.
06:29And you've got...
06:31And I want to go big.
06:33And I don't know how expensive big, big, big gets.
06:42It can be extremely expensive.
06:43I hate the idea that expensive means that a painter could be by, by, forever.
06:51Like this guy who we've been waiting for so long.
06:53I really do not.
06:54I don't want to trade him.
06:55I'm telling you right now.
06:56If that means that we can get Byron Buxton, you know, a center fielder who I know I can depend upon
07:04and he can generate, you know, he can generate offense and pop and done deal, I'll do it.
07:11I do think that window is now.
07:14So let's go big or go home.
07:16And a bat is what we need, a right-handed one preferably.
07:21So now's the time.
07:23And it will be shocking.
07:26And maybe the name...
07:27I hope that the name is shocking.
07:29I hope that the name is one that we haven't even mentioned and we never would have supposed
07:34would have been wrestled away from someone else's roster.
07:38Well, yeah, I remember when they got Hunter Pence.
07:39I don't remember anyone saying right before that, hey, they might trade for Hunter Pence next week.
07:43So, you know, these things do surprise you sometimes.
07:46I will just tell you, the more of this season...
07:48And we're four months into it now, basically.
07:49I just think it's an outfielder because it's an anti-Marsh, anti-Rohas, anti-Kepler thing.
07:57And I know we can make a similar argument in the bullpen, but I do think they're going to throw two to four starters.
08:03Two to four starters into the bullpen come October.
08:06Now, I don't know for sure which ones it'll be.
08:08We don't know that it'll be Painter.
08:10I think Abel's probably most likely of the young guys.
08:13I think Lozardo is most likely of the established starter guys.
08:18I mean, dare I say, do I believe in Taiwan a little bit?
08:22Not really, but I think I believe in him more than I do Rojas.
08:26If that makes some sense.
08:29Seltzer, where do you land four months into this season?
08:31Which position is more important to attack?
08:33Yeah, I totally feel the ping-ponging thing you were talking about earlier,
08:37where it does feel like I've had weeks where I'm one way or the other.
08:41But I have, like you, absolutely solidified.
08:44I feel incredibly confident.
08:46They have to get a bat.
08:48Like, they absolutely have to get a bat.
08:50A reliever would be nice.
08:52I think they need a guy at the back end of the bullpen.
08:54I would be fine with them going all in at this deadline, truly all in,
08:59and trading, you know, basically everyone but Miller or Painter or one or the other
09:03and, like, actually moving one of those guys for the right deal.
09:05Like, I'm willing to go in on this team.
09:08I think they have a real chance to win the World Series.
09:09And I think that it's so clear what they need.
09:12I mean, it's rare that you come into a deadline and say,
09:14this is exactly what this group needs.
09:17They need a right-handed bat.
09:19Like, they need desperately a bat, period, but ideally right-handed.
09:22But I'll take a bat.
09:23Let me ask you this question, James.
09:23And ideally a reliever as well.
09:25Well, yeah, ideally all of it, but it's not going to happen.
09:27But bat first, bat first, primary, they have to get a bat.
09:29So, James, if they get an outfield bat, which is more likely, in your opinion,
09:34right-handed hitting four-hole hitter,
09:35or it could be a righty or a lefty six- or seven-hole hitter.
09:39Well, no, so based on the guys on the market,
09:42I think it's more likely it's like a two-hitter type guy, you know?
09:46And I think Schwerber drops down or something like that in that range.
09:49Because the guys have been talked about mostly,
09:50if they're going to go for a big outfielder, and they might not,
09:53but the two biggest names that have made the most sense
09:55are Steven Kwan and Jaron Duran, who have been thrown out.
09:57They're both left-handed bats.
09:59They're both really good hitters who would make this lineup better,
10:02but they are left-handed bats.
10:03I bring up that four-hole hitter because I think you guys, you know.
10:06Well, I think that's ideal.
10:07It's been such an issue in October.
10:09Byron Buxton's the only one who, like, fits that,
10:11and he has, like, made it very clear.
10:13He has a no-trade clause.
10:14He's not leaving Minnesota.
10:15Like, he has put it, like, who knows where you can sweeten pots, whatever.
10:19He has made it clear he does not want to be traded.
10:21So, like, other than him, I don't know that there is a right-handed bat that makes sense.
10:25There are other rated bats, but not one of the level of those three guys we're talking.
10:29Like, I just kind of tend to think it's going to be an Austin Hayes kind of guy.
10:33I mean, maybe that's just because—
10:34If I had to bet, Joe, I would bet it's probably something like that.
10:37A little better than Hayes, but, like, that idea.
10:39But you know what?
10:40Like, I would be okay with that.
10:42Austin Hayes, I will say, and I'm not trying to give Dave Dombrowski excuses,
10:46he did come in and immediately had, you know, sickness and illness.
10:51Like, he was in the hospital for a week.
10:53So, Philly's had bad luck.
10:54You look at what Austin Hayes is doing this season.
10:56Pretty good.
10:57So, if that's all taken into consideration, it actually would be a good move
11:00if it was an Austin Hayes-type player just in that he could produce offensively.
11:03We'll ask you where you stand.
11:05I mean, there's really two different issues here.
11:07One is how aggressive do you want them to be?
11:09Put another way, are you willing to put the prime prospects on the table?
11:14And the primest of prime is Andrew Painter.
11:16But there's a couple other, you know, like Aiden Miller and Crawford and others,
11:20Abel, that are pretty, you know, pretty solid prime.
11:25But, and then there's the which position should it be.
11:28It's interesting.
11:29You know, we're kind of solidifying here on the bat,
11:32but let's not act like the bullpen hasn't been a fiasco at times.
11:35And let's, I'll say this, I don't think the Phillies can count on Aaron Nola.
11:38On two different fronts.
11:39One, we don't know if he'll be healthy.
11:40Two, we don't know if he'll be good.
11:42Yeah.
11:42Because earlier this year when he pitched, he was not good,
11:45and he hasn't been healthy for like two, two and a half months.
11:48He's been out a long time, man.
11:492-1-5, 5-9-2, 94-94.
11:52Where do you stand on it?
11:53We're going to do a ton on the Eagles.
11:55That includes Zach Vaughn at 7 o'clock.
11:57Great chance for you to get in early.
11:59Get in.
11:592-1-5, 5-9-2, 94-94.
12:02Your chance to win tickets to an Eagles practice during training camp.
12:06How cool is that?
12:08We'll give you that chance coming up next as well.
12:10Joe DiCamera and John Ritchie along with Devin and Seltzer
12:12from training camp today.
