00:00But let's also talk a lot of Eagles, which has been our main topic today.
00:04They made the turn yesterday morning from off-season to training camp.
00:11And one of the stalwarts of Philadelphia sports for a really, really, really long time now.
00:17He has won two Super Bowls with the Eagles.
00:19He is a player that I believe will and should be a future Hall of Famer.
00:23But it's not about the past, because I know the messaging with Nick Sirianni and the Eagles.
00:27It's about the next couple of months, not the last couple of years.
00:30We welcome the great Lane Johnson to our program today.
00:33Lane, good morning to you, bud.
00:35Good morning, everybody.
00:36How are you, pal?
00:37Doing good.
00:38Kick off our first practice today, so excited.
00:41We're excited for you, man.
00:43We are, you know, I'm just going to say, you're not going to say it, but we had a Sixers and Flyers season.
00:47That's so good.
00:48So we're looking forward for you guys to crank it up, obviously.
00:51And with the talent on the squad, you have a great shot.
00:54So, Lane, let's go back to last night.
00:55We actually have the audio.
00:56I want to play this, and then we'll get your sense of it.
00:59But we haven't played this yet for our audience.
01:01We have the audio of Nick Sirianni yesterday.
01:03I don't know if it was last night or yesterday afternoon, but addressing you guys.
01:06A little snippet of what he said, setting the tone for the coming season.
01:10Here was Sirianni yesterday.
01:11So, first I want to say, the celebration is over.
01:16Okay?
01:16The celebration is over.
01:18Preparation is here.
01:19Celebration is over.
01:20Preparation is here.
01:21As we continue through here.
01:23Last year, as we came into the 2024 season, there was a lot that we talked about of handling adversity.
01:31Now, it's a little different.
01:33You've got to handle success.
01:34Right?
01:35It's a different animal.
01:37Right?
01:37You've got to handle success.
01:38Everyone right now, right, for the guys that have been here, are telling you how good you are.
01:43Treat praise like perfume.
01:46Sniff it.
01:47Don't drink it.
01:48It's poison.
01:50What was it like, Lane, to be in that room as he delivered?
01:54Because he's got his mantras, can't be great without the greatness of the Father.
01:57So, last night or today, for us, again, the audio disseminated.
02:01Celebration is over.
02:03Preparation is here.
02:05I'm guessing he did not think of those words off the top of his head.
02:08That was very purposeful.
02:10Yeah.
02:10I mean, I think when you look at it, we're in a unique situation.
02:13And, you know, I think how do you repeat success, I think you've got to look at what made you successful.
02:19And I think it goes down to routines, your habits, and things you do daily.
02:24It doesn't matter what people say, the distractions.
02:28You know, if you can do that day by day, it doesn't matter how you feel.
02:31You know, a lot of good things can happen.
02:34But it is difficult.
02:35You know, I think the thing about being where we're at is that there are a lot of distractions.
02:40And I do think that it is probably harder dealing with success than it is failure.
02:45Because failure is the ultimate.
02:46I mean, it's a huge motivator.
02:47But, you know, the other side of the coin is challenging as well.
02:52Was 2018 and 2023, is that part of why you say that?
02:55Because the team did not.
02:58I mean, you were excellent in 23 until you weren't.
03:00In 2018, I honestly never felt you guys were excellent.
03:03You got on a nice playoff run.
03:04But I never felt you played really at the level of 2017.
03:07You've experienced it.
03:08So how real and tough is it to maintain that level of dominance?
03:14Well, each team is different.
03:15So from Super Bowl teams, you lose so many guys.
03:17Free agency.
03:18So, you know, some of that nucleus has broken up a little bit.
03:21But, yeah, what I do remember about that year is we started off not very good in 2018.
03:28Finished pretty good.
03:29You know, had a chance to go to the NFC Championship.
03:30And then 2020 or 2022 or three started off hot and then took a dumpster diving in.
03:39But through both of those, I think what I remember most is just being distracted.
03:45I think, you know, trying to achieve, you know, hit a home run every game.
03:50You know, just trying to be a hero every game instead of just playing the game for what it is.
03:55How do you avoid that trap this time out?
03:59Yeah, I mean, I think it's healthy talking about it.
04:01I think it's human nature to want to experience the relief factor.
04:05Okay, I've achieved my goal.
04:07Now what?
04:07Take a breath.
04:08But the realization is you've got to get back to what made you great, man.
04:13Why are we here?
04:15You know?
04:15And so it goes out of that.
04:17You look like you're in pretty good shape.
04:19I mean, that's part of your equation.
04:20Yeah.
04:21Well, I know that if I'm not, I'm going to get – it's going to be some rough days out there.
04:25So, but, no, I mean, to your point, you know, talking about it and then, yeah, I mean, how do we attack it?
04:33How can we get to, you know, a similar level as last year?
04:37And it's a day-by-day process, and it's probably harder now with all the distractions.
04:41What are – we're talking about to start the show what we're most excited about for this season for your team.
04:48What are you most excited about for this season for your team?
04:54Well, I guess for the O-line room, the thing I was excited about the most was Landon got some – not recliners, but some big individual, like, little sofas for us.
05:07No way.
05:08You got, like, petite, like, love seat for each guy?
05:12Yeah.
05:13Well, we got five in right now.
05:14We got to add some more and get the tables organized.
05:16Wow.
05:16Yesterday was day one, so that was the most excited I've been in probably five, six years.
05:19Oh, this is groundbreaking.
05:21That's an incredible idea.
05:22Something so small, yeah.
05:23Because normally, these guys were at just desks, like school desks or, you know, like normal chairs, you know, seats that are in an auditorium-type chairs.
05:33And you're not Devontae's size.
05:34But they're six and sevens.
05:36Yeah, six, seven and six and seven grade chairs in the desk.
05:39They don't work right for guys this size, so that's such a great idea.
05:43And I'm one of the smaller guys, so, like, you know, Jordan Malata goes through a chair.
05:47He may not be able to find all the pieces, you know.
05:49That's unbelievable, man.
05:50I was very excited.
05:52But, you know, just getting back around all the guys, you know, a lot of time in offseason.
05:57We're training, doing our own thing, but getting around the group and, you know, laughing and grinding together, man.
06:02That's what it's really all about.
06:03So, Lane, I know you've got natural leadership, obviously.
06:06We've heard from you for so many years.
06:08But do you also sense that, well, you'll do a lot on your own.
06:11Do you sense that people like Nick and Jeff Stoutland seek you out to say, hey, you've been through twice our team reaching the Super Bowl, as a franchise at least.
06:21I want you to really actively seek out other guys and explain to them the process of the rebound.
06:27Yeah, you know, every year we have a kind of a leadership group, and, you know, we talk about all these things.
06:34So, yeah, you know, we discuss a lot there.
06:37And then, you know, I guess how I lead, you know, I'll do a lot one-on-one.
06:43You know, I'll do some talking in the group, of course.
06:46But, you know, the other way is more my style.
06:48I feel like I can reach guys at a deeper level that way and, you know, do it without eyes or the criticism of other players on them.
06:56So, you know, you do that and attack it kind of day by day, and, man, you can make a lot of ground.
07:01Lane, how does Stoutland lead?
07:04I mean, we know he instructs, and his instruction is incredible.
07:06But take us in the room, him the person.
07:10How does he lead?
07:11Yeah, I mean, it's – I don't want to sound cliche, but, I mean, he reminds me of Burgess Meredith and, you know, being Mickey.
07:19Like, you know, what made Mickey so good is how just, you know, how he was attacking every day.
07:26He was just crazy about training.
07:27And then, you know, how much he cared about his players.
07:31How much –
07:31How much, you know, Mickey cared about Rocky.
07:34It's like how, you know, Stout cares about his players.
07:37So, you know, I think, guys, why he makes – why our teams are so good is just, you know, the second team, third team,
07:44whatever guys are in, whatever their name has been called, they've been treated like the starters.
07:49So, whether we're in meetings, before games, you know, you watch us do our drills out there.
07:54So, everybody's doing the same thing.
07:55It doesn't matter if you're – who you are.
07:57We're all doing the same thing.
07:59And, you know, I think his main – his best trait is how much he cares about players
08:04and how he studies the psychology of how to motivate players.
08:10And, you know, each player is different.
08:11So, he gets behind that and, you know, every player he approaches a little bit differently.
08:16So, we're all curious about how the offense will feel and look different with Kevin Petullo as the play caller.
08:24I know it's only been the off-season, you know, the activities.
08:30But how does the offense feel different right now?
08:34Man, it feels – you know, we'll have our first day running around.
08:38But, you know, Kevin's been here this whole time and he's been side-by-side with whatever coordinator we've had.
08:45He's been in the middle and passing game.
08:47And, really, you know, I see it as a pretty, you know, efficient change of guard.
08:54You know, he's – I feel like he understands his players really well.
08:57How much is the language changing?
09:00You know, there's some changes.
09:02But, you know, a lot of football is staying the same.
09:04And, you know, I think the thing is just trying to mix it up where we're not predictable.
09:08You know, and teams really in the off-season, man, that's where they make a lot of – you know, they're doing everything they can to –
09:13Sure.
09:14So, just knowing that.
09:15But I think, you know, the experience and just his – you know, he's a great communicator with his players too.
09:20So, you know, I'm really – I think this year is going to be really special.
09:24What do you focus on improving individually at this point in your career, at Hall of Fame career?
09:31What can you get better at?
09:33Well, I think being, I guess, more open to my guys, I guess.
09:38I guess I have more fun.
09:39I guess I walk around kind of uptight.
09:43Serious, I guess.
09:43You forget to have fun?
09:44No, I mean, I talk about in practice.
09:46Practice is real serious.
09:47But when it's over, just, you know, enjoying my time that I have more.
09:52Sure.
09:53But for me, it's really, you know, keeping the body up, having the routine.
09:56I think just, you know, bringing the guys that are in the room with me.
10:01Do you think about the Hall of Fame lane?
10:05Yeah, I mean, it's a certain possibility.
10:08But it's something that's going to be, you know, after I retire and have many fishing trips and many vacations.
10:13So it'll be at a different point in my life.
10:15But, yeah, it would be special.
10:18But it's something that I know is, you know, in the distance.
10:21Just make sure you have an August weekend five years after you retire.
10:26Just have August open five years later.
10:28Yeah, August has been a, John, you know, August has been a somber month for a lot of athletes throughout the lifetime.
10:37So, yeah, it'll be a different perspective.
10:39That's awesome.
10:40So, Lane, speaking of different perspectives, we can get, because I'm an athlete.
10:44You know, John knows him.
10:45You know, John was an athlete.
10:46I'm an athlete.
10:47Devin, yeah, a little bit.
10:48But, Lane, athletes like you and me, I mean, we go through the battles.
10:53You shouldn't talk like that.
10:55I've got a groin-ish injury, and maybe the psoas might be the ad doctor.
10:59I had to get the injection two days ago.
11:02Some people are denying that I got the injection.
11:04I got the injection.
11:05We know you've dealt with some groin injury.
11:07What advice would you give?
11:08Because I've got a big tennis match next Tuesday against Jack Fritz.
11:11So what advice would you give me in battling through the injury?
11:16I'll get Dr. William Myers a call.
11:18He's probably half a mile down the road.
11:22He fixed me up well.
11:24He's my doctor.
11:25Lane, he's my guy.
11:26I think, yeah, what you're going to experience, you're going to experience some scar tissue popping,
11:30and you're going to think, ah, did I re-tear it again?
11:32You know, and you'll be okay.
11:34And then, yeah, you just take it day by day.
11:35And I'm going to whoop Fritz's ass, right?
11:38Yeah, hey, yeah.
11:39Hey, sometimes it doesn't matter what the injury is.
11:41You don't have to agree, Lane.
11:42Okay.
11:43Look, more importantly, it's you guys whoop the Cowboys' ass opening night.
11:47I've got two ideas for you.
11:48Lane's got to go because all the festivities with the birds are cranking up soon.
11:51Two ideas for you opening night.
11:53You may not publicly embrace them, but I'm going to say them.
11:56Number one, with the unveil of that thing that says the Super Bowl champions, right?
12:03Because if you remember, last time it's a cloth is removed, and then there it is.
12:06So, idea number one, cloth is removed, and first it says Dallas sucks.
12:12And then another cloth is removed, and then it says Super Bowl champs.
12:16I'm just putting that one out.
12:17I just want you to consider taking that to the Howies and the Lories and the Sirianis.
12:20Idea number two, right before kickoff, a little ceremony, a little coin flip, the whole deal.
12:26Brandon Graham ambles out to midfield, a ceremonial captain.
12:30He's holding not one, but two Lombardi trophies.
12:34Now, I know Nick might say that's not our thing.
12:37I just want you to know that's the Hammers thing.
12:39Again, just for your assessment, recommendation, take it to the crew if you want.
12:44Yeah, I mean, I'm not sure how much jurisdiction he has over BG now.
12:48I think he can get those trophies.
12:50He's got to do whatever he wants to.
12:51I don't want you to put bulletin board material out there for Dallas.
12:54All right, I'm trying to protect you.
12:56I'm just saying those are ideas from me to you to the organization.
13:00Man, I remember, as long as they don't, I remember one year we had, like, two 2013 division champs up there.
13:05And I was like, nobody looked at that before it's hanging up for two years?
13:09It took people two years to change this banner up here?
13:11Yeah, that was up.
13:12That was up.
13:13I don't know if I have a picture of it, but I was going.
13:16It bugged me so much, I wanted to stay to the stadium clear to go up there and change it myself.
13:20That's funny.
13:20As long as they don't do that.
13:21Get that downplay up there.
13:22That's great.
13:23Hey, Lane, stay well.
13:25We admire you.
13:26We appreciate you as Philadelphia sports fans.
13:28We wish you the very best of luck, both with, you know, good health this year
13:31and excellence to get on the field for you individually and the squad.
13:34And go get it, man.
13:35Good luck, pal.
13:36Yep.
13:36Thank you all.
13:38And see you all at practice soon.
13:39You got it.
13:40Lane Johnson, big guy, future Hall of Famer, and obviously one of the greats in Philadelphia sports.
13:45Let's go back to the phones.
