Oregon Ducks Dan Lanning discusses important traits in a quarterbacks and leadership
Transcript
00:00What are you going to put a ball in your stove as a quarterback?
00:07A guy that throws touchdowns, doesn't throw interceptions.
00:11No, I mean, everybody has to be, the one thing that we've done at Oregon that I'm
00:15really happy about is everybody that's come to us has been uniquely did.
00:18They've been there themselves.
00:19But there's some traits of quarterback that are really important.
00:21Decision-making, the ability to take care of the ball,
00:25getting the ball to your weapons, understanding the system.
00:29Part of that's on you as coach is to make sure that you give them an opportunity to execute Iowa.
00:33You mentioned seeking new leaders.
00:34How do you go about that?
00:36Yeah, I've been in a lot of different places.
00:39And almost everywhere has like a leadership group, right?
00:42And for me, the thing that I think gets missed in that,
00:45a lot of times people put their best players, their leader,
00:48are in their leadership group, but they're not necessarily leaders.
00:50So to me, it's about leadership development, right?
00:52And rather than saying, hey, I'm going to have five guys in a leadership group,
00:56why not take 35 guys to a leadership retreat and describe what a leadership looks like.
01:00Have some real honest conversations with each other.
01:04You know, talk about when they felt like they were the best and when they weren't.
01:07You know, talk to them about the difference in leaders.
01:09You know, we studied in the spring with the captain's class.
01:13We talked just about the variety of leadership that exists there.
01:16But all great teams have great managers.
01:18Right, consistent teams.
