00:14For three days I did my own work, and Thomas Mugridge's too, and I flatter myself that

00:20I did his work well.

00:21I knew that it won Wolf Larson's approval, while the sailors beamed with satisfaction

00:26during the brief time my regime lasted.

00:30The first clean bite since I came aboard, Harrison said to me at the galley door, as he returned

00:35the dinner pots and pans from the forecastle.

00:38Somehow Tommy's grub always tastes of grease, stale grease, and I reckon he ain't changed

00:43his shirt since he left Frisco.

00:46I know he hasn't, I answered.

00:48I'll bet he sleeps in it too, Harrison added.

00:52And you won't lose, I agreed.

00:55The same shirt, and he hasn't had it off once in all this time.

01:00But three days was all Wolf Larson allowed him in which to recover from the effects of

01:04the beating.

01:05On the fourth day, lame and sore, scarcely able to see, so closed were his eyes, he was

01:10hailed from his bunk by the nape of the neck, and set to his duty.

01:14He sniffled and wept, but Wolf Larson was pitiless.

01:18And see that you serve no more slops, was his parting injunction.

01:23No more grease and dirt, mind, and a clean shirt occasionally, or you'll get a toe over

01:27the side.

01:28Understand?

01:28Thomas Muggeridge crawled weakly across the galley floor, and the short lurch of the ghost

01:35sent him staggering.

01:38In attempting to recover himself, he reached for the iron railing which surrounded the stove

01:42and kept the pots from sliding off, but he missed the railing, and his hand, with his

01:46weight behind it, landed squarely on the hot surface.

01:49There was a sizzle, an odour of burning flesh, and a sharp cry of pain.

01:56Oh God, God, what have I done?

02:00He wailed, sitting down in the coal box and nursing his new hurt by rocking back and forth.

02:06Why, it's always come on me.

02:08It makes me fair sick, it does.

02:11And I try so hard to go through life, armless and hurting nobody.

02:16The tears were running down his puffed and discolored cheeks, and his face was drawn with

02:23pain, a savage expression fitted across it.

02:26Oh, ow, I ate him, oh, ow, I ate him.

02:31He gritted out.

02:32Whom?

02:33I asked.

02:34But the poor wretch was weeping again over his misfortunes.

02:37Less difficult it was to guess whom he hated than whom he did not hate.

02:42For I had come to see a malignant devil in him which impelled him to hate all the world.

02:46I sometimes thought that he hated even himself so grotesquely had life dealt with him, and

02:51so monstrously.

02:53At such moments a great sympathy welled up within me, and I felt shame that I had ever

02:57joyed in his discomfiture or pain.

03:00Life had been unfair to him.

03:02It had played him a scurvy trick when it fashioned him into the thing he was, and it played him

03:07scurvy tricks ever since.

03:10What chance had he to be anything else than he was?

03:12And as though answering my unspoken thoughts, he wailed.

03:16I never had no chance, not half a chance.

03:19Or was there to send me to school, or put Tommy in me hungry belly, or wipe my bloody nose

03:26for me.

03:27When I was a kiddie, whoever did anything for me, eh?

03:31Who?

03:32I say.

03:32Never mind, Tommy, I said, placing a soothing hand on his shoulder.

03:38Cheer up.

03:38It'll be all right in the end.

03:41You've long years before you, and you can make anything you please of yourself.

03:46It's a lie.

03:47A bloody lie!

03:48He shouted in my face, flinging off the hand.

03:51It's a lie, and you know it.

03:52I'm already mied.

03:54And made out of livin'.

03:55And scraps.

03:58It's all right for you, ump.

04:00You was born a gentleman.

04:01You never knew what it was to go hungry, to cry yourself to sleep, your little belly

04:05gnawing and gnawing like a rat inside.

04:09It can't come, right?

04:11If I was President of the United States tomorrow, I wouldn't have filled my belly for one time

04:15when I was a kiddie, and it went empty.

04:18How could it, I say?

04:20I was born to suffering and sorrow.

04:22I've had more cruel suffering than any ten men I have.

04:28I've been in hospital all for my bleeding life.

04:32I've had the fever in Aspen Wall, in Havana, in New Orleans.

04:36I near died of the scurvy and was rotten with it.

04:39Six months in Barbados.

04:41Small pox in Honolulu.

04:43Two broken legs in Shanghai.

04:45Pneumonia in Alaska.

04:48Three busted ribs.

04:49And my insides all twisted in Frisco.

04:53And here I am now.

04:54Look at me.

04:57My ribs kick loose from my back again.

05:00I'll be caught from blood before it boils.

05:04How can it be mied up to me, I ask?

05:08Who's going to do it?

05:09God?

05:10Oh.

05:11How God must have aided me when he signed me up for a voyage in this bloomin' world of his.

05:18This tirade against destiny went on for an hour or more, and then he buckled to his work, limping and groaning, and in his eyes a great hatred for all created things.

05:31His diagnosis was correct, however, and for he was seized with occasional sicknesses, during which he vomited blood and suffered great pain.

05:41And as he said, it seemed God hated him too much to let him die, for he ultimately grew better and waxed more malignant than ever.

05:48Several days more passed before Johnson crawled on deck, and went about his work in a half-hearted way.

05:55He was still a sick man, and I more than once observed him creeping painfully aloft to a topsail, or drooping wearily as he stood at the wheel.

06:03But still worse, it seemed that his spirit was broken.

06:06He was abject before Wolf Larson, and almost groveled to Johansson.

06:11Not so was the conduct of Leech. He went about the deck like a tiger cub, glaring his hatred openly at Wolf Larson and Johansson.

06:20I'll do for you yet, you slab-footed Swede, I heard him say to Johansson one night on deck.

06:27The maid cursed him in the darkness, and the next moment some missile struck the galley.

06:31A sharp rap. There was more cursing, a mocking laugh, and when all was quiet,

06:36I stole outside and found a heavy knife embedded over an inch in the solid wood.

06:41A few minutes later the maid came fumbling about in search of it, but I returned it privily to Leech next day.

06:46He grinned when I handed it over.

06:49Yet it was a grin that contained more sincere thanks than a multitude of verbosities of speech common to the members of my own class.

06:57Unlike anyone else in the ship's company, I found myself with no quarrels on my hands, and in the good graces of all.

07:04The hunters possibly no more than tolerated me, though none of them disliked me.

07:09While Smoke and Henderson, convalescent under a deck awning, and swinging day and night in their hammocks,

07:15assured me that I was better than any hospital nurse, and that they would not forget me at the end of the voyage when they were paid off.

07:22As though I stood in need of their money, I, who could have bought them out bag and baggage and the schooner and its equipment and score of times over.

07:29But upon me had devolved the task of tending their wounds, and pulling them through, and I did my best by them.

07:40Wolf Larson underwent another bad attack of headache which lasted two days.

07:44He must have suffered severely, for he called me in and obeyed my commands like a sick child, but nothing I could do seemed to relieve him.

07:51At my suggestion, however, he gave up smoking and drinking, though why such a magnificent animal as he should have headaches at all puzzles me.

08:02"'Tis the hand of God, I'm telling you," is the way Lewis sees it.

08:06"'Tis a visitation for his black-hearted deeds, and there's more behind and coming.

08:12Or else...

08:13Or else, I prompted, God is not in and not doing his duty, though it's me, as shouldn't say it.

08:22I was mistaken when I said that I was in the good graces of all.

08:27Not only does Thomas Muggeridge continue to hate me, but he has discovered a new reason for hating me.

08:34It took me no little while to puzzle it out, but I finally discovered that it was because I was more luckily born than he.

08:41Gentleman born, he put it.

08:43And still, no more dead men,' I twitted Lewis, when Smoke and Henderson, side by side in friendly conversation, took their first exercise on deck.

08:55Lewis surveyed me with his shrewd grey eyes and shook his head portentously.

09:01"'She's a-comin', I tell you, and it'll be sheets and halyards, stand by all hands when she begins to howl.

09:09"'I have to feel, Eve, it this long time, and I can feel it now as plainly as I feel the rigging, Eve the dark night.

09:20"'She's close, she's close, she's close.

09:24"'Who goes first?' I queried.

09:26"'Not fat old Lewis, I promise you,' he laughed.

09:29"'For tis in the bones, Eve, me, I know, that come this year next, I'll be gazing in the old mother's eyes,

09:36"'weary with watching Eve the sea for the five sons she gave to it.'

09:41"'What's he been saying to you?' Thomas Muggeridge demanded a moment later.

09:47"'That he's going home some day to see his mother,' I answered diplomatically.

09:53"'I never had none,' was the Cockney's comment, as he gazed with lusterless, hopeless eyes into mine.

10:01"'Chapter fourteen. It has dawned upon me that I have never placed a proper valuation upon womankind.

10:11"'For that matter, though not amative to any considerable degree so far as I have discovered,

10:16"'I was never outside the atmosphere of women until now.

10:19"'My mother and sisters were always about me, and I was always trying to escape them,

10:23"'for they worried me to distraction, with their solicitude for my health,

10:27"'and with their periodic inroads on my den, when my orderly confusion upon which I prided myself

10:33"'was turned into worse confusion and less order, though it looked neat enough to the eye.

10:38"'I never could find anything when they had departed, but now, alas,

10:42"'how welcome would have been the feel of their presence,

10:45"'the frou-frou and swish-swish of their skirts which I had so cordially detested.

10:50"'I am sure if I ever get home that I shall never be irritable with them again.

10:54"'They may dose me and doctor me morning, noon, and night, and dust and sweep,

10:59"'and put my den to rides every minute of the day,

11:02"'and I shall only lean back and survey it all,

11:05"'and be thankful in that I am possessed of a mother and some several sisters.

11:10"'All of which has me wondering,

11:12"'where are the mothers of these twenty and odd men on the ghost?

11:15"'It strikes me as unnatural and unhealthful that men should be

11:18"'totally separated from women and heard through the world by themselves.

11:22"'Coarseness and savagery are the inevitable results.

11:26"'These men about me should have wives and sisters and daughters.

11:31"'Then they would be capable of softness and tenderness and sympathy.

11:35"'As it is, not one of them is married.

11:37"'In years and years not one of them has been in contact with a good woman,

11:40"'or with the influence or redemption which irresistibly radiates from such a creature.

11:45"'There is no balance in their lives.

11:47"'Their masculinity, which in and of itself, of the brute, has been overdeveloped.

11:53"'The other and spiritual side of their natures has been dwarfed, atrophied, in fact.

11:58"'They are a company of celibates grinding harshly against one another

12:02"'and growing daily more calloused from the grinding.

12:06"'It seems to me impossible sometimes that they ever had mothers.

12:09"'It would appear that they are a half-brute, half-human species,

12:13"'a race apart, where there is no such thing as sex.

12:16"'They are hatched out by the sun like turtle eggs,

12:20"'or receive life in some similar and sordid fashion,

12:24"'and that all their days they fester in brutality and viciousness,

12:27"'and in the end die as unlovely as they have lived.

12:31"'Rendered curious by this new direction of ideas,

12:34"'I talked with Johansson last night,

12:36"'the first superfluous words with which he had favoured me since the voyage began.

12:41"'He left Sweden when he was eighteen,

12:43"'is now thirty-eight,

12:45"'and in all the intervening time has not been home once.

12:49"'He had met a townsman a couple of years before

12:52"'in some sailor boarding house in Chile,

12:55"'so that he knew his mother to be still alive.

12:58"'She must be a pretty old woman now,' he said,

13:02"'staring meditatively into the binnacle,

13:05"'and then jerking a sharp glance at Harrison,

13:07"'who was steering a point off the course.

13:11"'When did you last write to her?'

13:14"'He performed his mental arithmetic aloud.

13:18"'Eighty-one... no, eighty-two, eh?

13:21"'No, eighty-three.

13:22"'Yes, eighty-three, ten years ago,

13:24"'from some little port in Madagascar, I was trading.

13:26"'You see,' he went on,

13:29"'as though addressing his neglected mother,

13:31"'across half the girth of the earth,

13:33"'each year I was going home,

13:35"'so what was the good to write?

13:37"'It was only a year,

13:38"'and each year something happened,

13:40"'and I did not go,
