00:00:07Three days of rest, three blessed days of rest, are what I had with Wolf Larson,

00:00:12eating at the cabin table and doing nothing but discuss life, literature, and the universe.

00:00:17The while, Thomas Mugridge fumed and raged and did my work as well as his own.

00:00:22Watch out for the squalls, is all I can say to you, was Lewis's warning.

00:00:27Given during a spare half hour on deck, while Wolf Larson was engaged in straightening out a row among the hunters.

00:00:37You can't tell what'll be happening, Lewis went on, in response to my query for more definite information.

00:00:44That man's as contrary as air currents or water currents.

00:00:48You can never guess the way he's veem.

00:00:51Tis just as you're thinking, you know him, and you're making a favorable slant along him,

00:00:55that he whirls around, dead head, and comes howling down upon you, and ripping all eve, your fine-weather sails to rags.

00:01:06So, I was not altogether surprised when the squall, foretold by Lewis, smote me.

00:01:12We'd been having a heated discussion upon life, of course, and grown over bold,

00:01:16I was passing stiff strictures upon Wolf Larson and the life of Wolf Larson.

00:01:21In fact, I was vivisecting him and turning over his soul-stuff as keenly and thoroughly as it was his custom to do it to others.

00:01:29It may be a weakness of mine that I have an incisive way of speech,

00:01:32but I threw all restraint to the winds and cut and slashed until the whole of the man was snarling.

00:01:38The dark sun-bronze of his face went black with wrath.

00:01:41His eyes were ablaze.

00:01:43There was no clearness or sanity in them, nothing but the terrific rage of a madman.

00:01:49It was the wolf in him that I saw, and a mad wolf at that.

00:01:53He sprang for me with a half-roar, gripping my arm.

00:01:57I had steeled myself to brazen it out, though I was trembling inwardly,

00:02:01but the enormous strength of the man was too much for my fortitude.

00:02:05He had gripped me by the biceps with his single hand,

00:02:08and when that grip tightened, I wilted and shrieked loud.

00:02:11My feet went out from under me.

00:02:14I simply could not stand upright and endure the agony.

00:02:17The muscles refused their duty.

00:02:18The pain was too great.

00:02:21My biceps were being crushed to a pulp.

00:02:25He seemed to recover himself, for a lucid gleam came into his eye,

00:02:29and he relaxed his hold with a short laugh that was more like a growl.

00:02:34I fell to the floor, feeling very faint,

00:02:36while he sat down, lighted a cigar, and watched me, as a cat watches a mouse.

00:02:42As I writhed about, I could see in his eyes that curiosity I had so often noted,

00:02:47that wonder and perplexity, that questing, that everlasting query of his as to what it was all about.

00:02:54I finally crawled to my feet and ascended the companion stairs.

00:02:58Fair weather was over, and there was nothing left but to return to the galley.

00:03:02My left arm was numb, as though paralyzed, and days passed before I could use it.

00:03:07While weeks went by before the last stiffness and pain went out of it.

00:03:11And he had done nothing but put his hand upon my arm and squeeze.

00:03:17There had been no wrenching or jerking.

00:03:20He just closed his hand with a steady pressure.

00:03:22What he might have done, I did not fully realize till the next day,

00:03:26when he put his head into the galley,

00:03:28and as a sign of renewed friendliness asked me how my arm was getting on.

00:03:32It might have been worse.

00:03:34He smiled.

00:03:35I was peeling potatoes.

00:03:36He picked one up from the pan.

00:03:38It was fair-sized, firm, and unpeeled.

00:03:41He closed his hand upon it, squeezed,

00:03:44and the potatoes squirted out between his fingers in mushy streams.

00:03:50The pulpy remnant he dropped back into the pan and turned away.

00:03:53And I had a sharp vision of how it might have fared with me

00:03:56had the monster put his real strength upon me.

00:04:00But the three days rest was good in spite of it all,

00:04:02for it had given my knee the very chance it needed.

00:04:05It felt much better.

00:04:06The swelling had materially decreased,

00:04:08and the cap seemed descending into its proper place.

00:04:11Also, the three days rest brought the trouble I had foreseen.

00:04:15It was plainly Thomas Muggeridge's intention to make me pay for those three days.

00:04:20He treated me vilely,

00:04:22cursed me continually,

00:04:24and heaped his own work upon me.

00:04:25He even ventured to raise his fist to me,

00:04:27but I was becoming animal like myself,

00:04:30and I snarled in his face so terribly that it must have frightened him back.

00:04:34It is no pleasant picture I can conjure up of myself.

00:04:37Humphrey Van Whedon, in that noisome ship's galley,

00:04:41crouched in a corner over my task,

00:04:43my face raised to the face of the creature about to strike me,

00:04:47my lips lifted and snarling like a dog's,

00:04:50my eyes gleaming with fear and helplessness,

00:04:52and the courage that comes of fear and helplessness.

00:04:55Yes, I do not like the picture.

00:04:58It reminds me too strongly of a rat in a trap.

00:05:02I do not care to think of it,

00:05:04but it was elective,

00:05:05for the threatened blow did not descend.

00:05:09Thomas Muggeridge backed away,

00:05:11glaring as hatefully and viciously as I glared.

00:05:13A pair of beasts is what we were,

00:05:15pinned together and showing our teeth.

00:05:16He was a coward,

00:05:18afraid to strike me because I had not quailed sufficiently in advance.

00:05:22So he chose a new way to intimidate me.

00:05:24There was only one galley knife,

00:05:26that, as a knife, amounted to anything.

00:05:28This, through many years of service and wear,

00:05:31had acquired a long, lean blade.

00:05:34It was unusually cruel-looking,

00:05:36and at first I had shuddered every time I used it.

00:05:39The cook borrowed a stone from Johansson

00:05:41and proceeded to sharpen the knife.

00:05:43He did it with great ostentation,

00:05:46glancing significantly at me the while.

00:05:49He wetted it up and down all day long.

00:05:52Every odd moment he could find he had the knife and stone out

00:05:56and was wetting away.

00:05:57The steel acquired a razor edge.

00:06:01He tried it with the ball of his thumb or across the nail.

00:06:04He shaved hairs from the back of his hand,

00:06:06glanced along the edge with microscopic acuteness,

00:06:09and found or feigned that he found always

00:06:11a slight inequality in its edge somewhere.

00:06:15Then he would put it on the stone again and wet, wet, wet,

00:06:19till I could have laughed aloud.

00:06:21It was so very ludicrous.

00:06:22It was also serious, for I learned that he was capable of using it,

00:06:28that under all his cowardice there was a courage of cowardice like mine

00:06:33that would impel him to do the very thing his whole nature protested against doing

00:06:38and was afraid of doing.

00:06:41Cookie sharpening his knife for hump

00:06:43was being whispered about among the sailors.

00:06:48And some of them twitted him about it.

00:06:51This he took in good part and was really pleased,

00:06:55nodding his head with direful foreknowledge and mystery,

00:06:58until George Leach, the erstwhile cabin boy,

00:07:02ventured some rough pleasantry on the subject.

00:07:04Now, it happened that Leach was one of the sailors told off

00:07:09to douse Muggeridge after his game of cards with the captain.

00:07:12Leach had evidently done his task with a thoroughness

00:07:15that Muggeridge had not forgiven,

00:07:17for words followed and evil names involving smirched ancestries.

00:07:22Muggeridge menaced with the knife he was sharpening for me.

00:07:25Leach laughed and hurled more of his telegraph hill,

00:07:27Billingsgate, and before he or I knew what happened,

00:07:30his right arm had been ripped open from elbow to wrist

00:07:34by a quick slash of the knife.

00:07:37The cook backed away, a fiendish expression on his face.

00:07:40The knife held before him in a position of defense.

00:07:44But Leach took it quite calmly,

00:07:45though blood was spouting upon the deck

00:07:47as generously as water from a fountain.

00:07:51I'm going to get you, Cookie, he said.

00:07:54And I'll get you hard.

00:07:56And I won't be in no hurry about it.

00:07:59You'll be without that knife when I come for you.

00:08:03So saying, he turned and walked quietly forward.

00:08:06Muggeridge's face was livid with fear at what he had done

00:08:09and at what he might expect sooner or later from the man he had stabbed.

00:08:13But his demeanor toward me was more ferocious than ever.

00:08:16In spite of his fear at the reckoning,

00:08:18he must expect to pay for what he had done.

00:08:21He could see that it had been an object lesson to me,

00:08:25and he became more domineering and exultant.

00:08:28Also, there was a lust in him, akin to madness,

00:08:33which had come with sight of the blood he had drawn.

00:08:36He was beginning to see red, in whatever direction he looked.

00:08:40The psychology of it is sadly tangled,

00:08:43and yet I could read the workings of his mind

00:08:46as clearly as though it were a printed book.

00:08:49Several days went by, the ghost still foaming down the trades,

00:08:54and I could swear I saw madness growing in Thomas Muggeridge's eyes.

00:08:59And I confess that I became afraid, very much afraid.

00:09:04Wet, wet, wet.

00:09:07It went all day long.

00:09:08The look in his eyes as he felt the keen edge and glared at me

00:09:12was positively carnivorous.

00:09:14I was afraid to turn my shoulder to him.

00:09:16And when I left the galley, I went out backwards

00:09:19to the amusement of the sailors and hunters,

00:09:21who made a point of gathering in groups to witness my exit.

00:09:25The strain was too great.

00:09:26I sometimes thought my mind would give way under it.

00:09:29A meat thing on this ship of madmen and brutes.

00:09:33Every hour, every minute of my existence was in jeopardy.

00:09:38I was a human soul in distress,

00:09:39and yet no so, for or aft,

00:09:42betrayed sufficient sympathy to come to my aid.

00:09:44At times I thought of throwing myself

00:09:45on the mercy of Wolf Larson,

00:09:47but the vision of the mocking devil in his eyes

00:09:49that questioned life and sneered at it

00:09:51would come strong upon me and compel me to refrain.

00:09:55At other times I seriously contemplated suicide,

00:09:58and the whole force of my hopeful philosophy was required

00:10:01to keep me from going over the side

00:10:03in the darkness of night.

00:10:06Several times Wolf Larson tried to inveigle me into discussion,

00:10:09but I gave him short answers and eluded him.

00:10:12Finally he commanded me to resume my seat

00:10:15at the captain's table for a time

00:10:16and let the cook do my work.

00:10:19Then I spoke frankly,

00:10:20telling him what I was enduring from Thomas Mugridge

00:10:23because of the three days of favoritism

00:10:25which he had shown me.

00:10:26Wolf Larson regarded me with smiling eyes.

00:10:29So you're afraid, eh?

00:10:33He sneered.

00:10:34Yes, I said defiantly and honestly.

00:10:37I am afraid.

00:10:39That's the way with you fellows,

00:10:41he cried half angrily,

00:10:43sentimentalizing about your immortal souls

00:10:45and afraid to die.

00:10:48At sight of a sharp knife and a cowardly cockney,

00:10:51the clinging of life to life

00:10:52overcomes all your fond foolishness.

00:10:55Why, my dear fellow, you will live forever.

00:10:58You are a god

00:10:59and a god cannot be killed.

00:11:01Cookie cannot hurt you.

00:11:03You are sure of your resurrection.

00:11:05What's there to be afraid of?

00:11:07You have eternal life before you.

00:11:10You are a millionaire in immortality

00:11:12and a millionaire whose fortune cannot be lost,

00:11:15whose fortune is less perishable than the stars

00:11:18and as lasting as space or time.

00:11:20It is impossible for you to diminish your principle.

00:11:24Immortality is a thing without beginning or end.

00:11:26Eternity is eternity

00:11:28and though you die here and now,

00:11:30you will go on living somewhere else and hereafter.

00:11:33And it is all very beautiful,

00:11:36this shaking off of the flesh

00:11:38and soaring of the imprisoned spirit.

00:11:41Cookie cannot hurt you.

00:11:43He can only give you a boost

00:11:45on the path you eternally must tread.

00:11:48Or, if you do not wish to be boosted just yet,

00:11:51why not boost Cookie?

00:11:52According to your ideas,

00:11:54he too must be an immortal millionaire.

00:11:56You cannot bankrupt him.

00:11:58His paper will always circulate at par.

00:12:00You cannot diminish the length of his living

00:12:02by killing him,

00:12:03for he is without beginning or end.

00:12:05He's bound to go on living somewhere, somehow.

00:12:08Then boost him.

00:12:09Stick a knife in him and let his spirit free.

00:12:12As it is,

00:12:14it's in a nasty prison.

00:12:15And you'll do him only a kindness

00:12:19by breaking down the door.

00:12:21And who knows?

00:12:22It may be a very beautiful spirit

00:12:24that will go soaring up into the blue

00:12:26from that ugly carcass.

00:12:29Boost him along

00:12:30and I'll promote you to his place.

00:12:33And he's getting forty-five dollars a month.

00:12:36It was plain

00:12:37that I could look for no help or mercy

00:12:40from Wolf Larson.

00:12:41Whatever was to be done,

00:12:43I must do for myself.

00:12:44And out of the courage of fear,

00:12:46I evolved the plan

00:12:47of fighting Thomas McGridge

00:12:48with his own weapons.

00:12:51I borrowed a whetstone from Johansson.

00:12:55Lewis, the boat steerer,

00:12:56had already begged me

00:12:57for condensed milk and sugar.

00:12:59The lazarette,

00:13:00where such delicacies were stored,

00:13:02was situated beneath the cabin door.

00:13:04Watching my chance,

00:13:05I stole five cans of the milk

00:13:07and that night,

00:13:08when it was Lewis's watch on deck,

00:13:10I traded them with him

00:13:11for a dirk as lean and cruel-looking

00:13:13as Thomas McGridge's vegetable knife.

00:13:17It was rusty and dull,

00:13:19but I turned the grindstone

00:13:20while Lewis gave it an edge.

00:13:23I slept more soundly than usual that night.

00:13:26Next morning, after breakfast,

00:13:27Thomas McGridge began his wet, wet, wet.

00:13:30I glanced warily at him,

00:13:31for I was on my knees

00:13:33taking the ashes from the stove.

00:13:35When I returned from throwing them over sight,

00:13:36he was talking to Harrison,

00:13:38whose honest yokel's face

00:13:39was filled with fascination and wonder.

00:13:43Yes,

00:13:44Muggridge was saying,

00:13:46and what does his worship do

00:13:47but give me two years in reading,

00:13:49but lie me if I care?

00:13:50The other mug was fixed plenty.

00:13:52I should have seen him.

00:13:54Knife just like this.

00:13:56I stuck it in,

00:13:57like into soft butter.

00:13:59And the way he squealed

00:14:03was better

00:14:04and a two-penny gaff.

00:14:07He shot a glance in my direction

00:14:08to see if I was taking it in

00:14:11and went on.

00:14:13I didn't mean it, Tommy.

00:14:15He was sniffling.

00:14:16So help me God,

00:14:18I didn't mean it.

00:14:20I'll fix your bloody well right,

00:14:46interrupted the gory narrative

00:14:47and Harrison went aft.

00:14:50Muggridge sat down

00:14:50on the raised threshold

00:14:52to the galley

00:14:52and went on

00:14:53with his knife sharpening.

00:14:54I put the shovel away

00:14:55and calmly sat down

00:14:56on the coal box

00:14:57facing him.

00:14:58He favored me

00:14:59with a vicious stare.

00:15:00Still, calmly,

00:15:02though my heart

00:15:02was going pit-a-pat,

00:15:03I pulled out

00:15:04Lewis's dirk

00:15:06and began to wet it

00:15:07on the stone.

00:15:09I looked for almost

00:15:10any sort of explosion

00:15:11on the cockney's part,

00:15:12but to my surprise,

00:15:13he did not appear aware

00:15:14of what I was doing.

00:15:16wetting his knife.

00:15:18So did I.

00:15:18And for two hours

00:15:19we sat there

00:15:20face to face,

00:15:22wet, wet, wet, wet,

00:15:24till the news of his

00:15:25spread abroad

00:15:26and half the ship's company

00:15:27was crowding the galley doors

00:15:29to see the sight.

00:15:31Encouragement and advice

00:15:32were freely tendered,

00:15:34and Jock Horner,

00:15:34the quiet,

00:15:35self-spoken hunter

00:15:36who looked as though

00:15:37he would not harm a mouse,

00:15:38advised me

00:15:39to leave the ribs alone

00:15:40to thrust upward

00:15:41for the abdomen,

00:15:43at the same time

00:15:43giving what he called

00:15:44the Spanish twist

00:15:45to the blade.

00:15:49his bandaged arm

00:15:55paused once or twice

00:15:56at the break of the poop

00:16:10only two cowardly

00:16:26who would have interfered

00:16:29in a death struggle.

00:16:32was laughable and childish,

00:16:42this was the most

00:16:43inconceivable.

00:17:53was reinforced

00:17:54by a seeming kettle

00:17:55of water,

00:17:56and at sight of it

00:17:57the sailors

00:17:57scrambled out of the way.

00:17:59This was a sort of victory

00:18:00for Thomas Mugridge,

00:18:01and enabled him

00:18:02to accept more gracefully

00:18:03the defeat

00:18:04I had given him,

00:18:05though, of course,

00:18:06he was too discreet

00:18:06to attempt to drive

00:18:07the hunters away.

00:18:10I see Cookie's finish.

00:18:12I heard Smoke say to Horner,

00:18:14You bet,

00:18:15was the reply.

00:18:16Hump runs the galley

00:18:17from now on,

00:18:17and Cookie pulls in

00:18:18his horns.

00:18:20Mugridge heard

00:18:20and shot a swift glance

00:18:22at me,

00:18:22but I gave no sign

00:18:23that the conversation

00:18:24had reached me.

00:18:25I had not thought

00:18:26my victory was so far-reaching

00:18:27and complete,

00:18:28but I resolved to let go

00:18:29nothing I had gained.

00:18:31As the days went by,

00:18:32Smoke's prophecy

00:18:33was verified.

00:18:34The cockney became

00:18:35more humble

00:18:36and slavish to me

00:18:37than even to Wolf Larson.

00:18:38I mistered him

00:18:39and served him

00:18:40no longer,

00:18:41washed no more greasy pots

00:18:42and peeled no more potatoes.

00:18:44I did my own work

00:18:45and my own work only,

00:18:47and when

00:18:47and in what fashion

00:18:49I saw fate.

00:18:50Also,

00:18:51I carried the dirk

00:18:51in a sheath at my hip,

00:18:53sailor fashion,

00:18:54and maintained

00:18:55toward Thomas Mugridge

00:18:56a constant attitude

00:19:02and contempt.

00:19:06My intimacy

00:19:07with Wolf Larson

00:19:08increases

00:19:09if by intimacy

00:19:10may be denoted

00:19:11those values

00:19:12which exist

00:19:12between master and man,

00:19:14or better yet

00:19:15between king and jester.

00:19:17I am to him

00:19:17no more than a toy,

00:19:18and he values me

00:19:19no more than a child

00:19:20values a toy.

00:19:21My function is to amuse,

00:19:23and so,

00:19:23as I amuse,

00:19:24all goes well,

00:19:25but let him become bored,

00:19:26or let him have

00:19:28one of his black moods

00:19:29come upon him,

00:19:29and at once

00:19:31I am relegated

00:19:32from cabin table

00:19:33to galley,

00:19:34while at the same time

00:19:35I am fortunate

00:19:37to escape with my life

00:19:38and the whole body.

00:19:40The loneliness

00:19:40of the man

00:19:41is slowly being borne

00:20:34it is from a humor

00:20:40and it is a sadness

00:20:42as deep-reaching

00:20:42as the roots

00:20:43of the race.

00:20:44It is the race heritage,

00:20:46the sadness

00:20:47which has made

00:20:47the race sober-minded,

00:20:49clean-lived,

00:20:50and fanatically moral,
