00:00Vigil Strange I Kept on the Field One Night
00:03By Walt Whitman
00:05Vigil Strange I Kept on the Field One Night
00:09When you, my son, and my comrade, dropped at my side that day.
00:14One look I but gave which your dear eyes returned
00:18With a look I shall never forget.
00:21One touch of your hand to mine, oh boy,
00:24Reached up as you lay on the ground.
00:27Then, onward, I sped in the battle.
00:30The even-contested battle.
00:33Till late in the night, relieved to the place at last again,
00:38I made my way.
00:41Found you in death.
00:43So cold, dear comrade.
00:46Found your body's son of responding kisses never again on earth responding.
00:52There'd your face in the starlight.
00:54Curious the scene, cool blue the moderate night wind.
00:58Long there and then in vigil I stood.
01:01Dimly around me the battlefields spreading.
01:05Vigil wondrous and vigil sweet.
01:08There in the fragrant silent night.
01:10But not a tear fell.
01:11Not even a long-drawn sigh.
01:14Long, long, I gazed.
01:17Then, on the earth partially reclining.
01:20Sat by your side.
01:22Leaning my chin in my hands.
01:25Passing sweet hours.
01:28Immortal, mystic hours.
01:30With you, dearest comrade.
01:32Not a tear.
01:35Not a word.
01:37Vigil of silence.
01:39Love and death.
01:41Vigil for you, my son.
01:43And my soldier.
01:45As onward silently stars aloft,
01:48Eastward new ones upward stole.
01:50Vigil final for you, brave boy.
01:53I could not save you.
01:54Swift was your death.
01:55I faithfully loved you and cared for you living.
01:59I think we shall surely meet again.
02:02Till at latest lingering of the night,
02:04Indeed, just as the dawn appeared,
02:06My comrade I wrapped in his blanket.
02:09Enveloped him well his form.
02:12Folded the blanket well,
02:14Tucking it carefully overhead.
02:16And carefully under feet.
02:18And there and then,
02:20And bathed by the rising sun.
02:22My son in his grave.
02:25In his rude-dug grave I deposited.
02:29Ending my vigil strange with that.
02:32Vigil of night.
02:34And battlefield dim.
02:36Vigil for boy of responding kisses.
02:39Never again on earth responding.
02:42Vigil for comrade swiftly slain.
02:45Vigil I never forget.
02:48How as day brightened,
02:50I rose from the chill ground,
02:52Unfolded my soldier well in his blanket,
02:54And buried him where he fell.
