00:00The Seawolf, Chapter 5 and 6, by Jack London.
00:07But my first night in the hunter's steerage was also my last day.
00:12Next day, Johansson, the new mate, was routed from the cabin by Wolf Larson and sent into the steerage to sleep thereafter,
00:20while I took possession of the tiny cabin stateroom, which, on the first day of the voyage, had already had two occupants.
00:28The reason for this change was quickly learned by the hunters and became the cause of a deal of grumbling on their part.
00:34It seemed that Johansson, in his sleep, lived over each night the events of the day.
00:39His incessant talking and shouting and bellowing of orders had been too much for Wolf Larson,
00:44who had accordingly foisted the nuisance upon his hunters.
00:48After a sleepless night, I arose, weak and in agony, to hobble through the second day on the ghost.
00:54Thomas Muggeridge routed me out at half-past five, much in the fashion that Bill Sykes must have routed out his dog.
01:04But Mr. Muggeridge's brutality to me was paid back in kind and with interest.
01:08The unnecessary noise he made, I had lain wide-eyed the whole night,
01:13must have awakened one of the hunters for a heavy shoe whizzed through the semi-darkness.
01:19And Mr. Muggeridge, with a sharp howl of pain, humbly begged everybody's pardon.
01:25Later on in the galley, I noticed that his ear was bruised and swollen.
01:31It never went back entirely to its normal shape and was called a cauliflower ear by the sailors.
01:39The day was filled with miserable variety.
01:42I had taken my dried clothes down from the galley the night before,
01:44and the first thing I did was to exchange the cook's garments for them.
01:48I looked for my purse.
01:50In addition to some small change, and I have a good memory for such things,
01:54it had contained one hundred and eighty-five dollars in gold and paper.
01:58The purse I found, but its contents, with the exception of the small silver, had been abstracted.
02:04I spoke to the cook about it when I went on deck to take up my duties in the galley,
02:07and though I had looked forward to a surly answer,
02:10I had not expected the belligerent harangue that I received.
02:15Look here, ump!
02:17He began a malicious light in his eyes and a snarl in his throat.
02:22I want your nose punched.
02:25If you think I'm a thief, just keep it to yourself,
02:28or you'll be finding how bloody well mistaken you are.
02:32Strike me blind if this ain't gratitude for you.
02:35Here, here you come, a poor miserable specimen of oomans' gum,
02:41and I takes you into my galley and treats you handsome.
02:46And this is what I get for it.
02:48Next time you can go out, say I,
02:50and I got a good mind to give you what for anyway.
02:55So saying, he put up his fists and started for me.
02:59To my shame be it, I cowered away from the blow
03:01and ran out the galley door.
03:03What else was I to do?
03:06Force nothing but force obtained on this brute ship.
03:09Moral suasion was a thing unknown.
03:12Picture it to yourself, a man of ordinary stature,
03:15slender of build and with weak, undeveloped muscles,
03:18who has lived a peaceful, placid life
03:21and unused to violence of any sort.
03:23What could such a man possibly do?
03:26There was no more reason that I should stand and face these human beasts
03:29than that I should stand and face an infuriated bull.
03:35So I thought it out at the time,
03:37feeling the need for vindication and desiring to be at peace with my conscience.
03:41But this vindication did not satisfy.
03:44Nor to this day can I permit my manhood to look back upon those events
03:47and feel entirely exonerated.
03:49The situation was something that really exceeded rational formulas for conduct
03:54and demanded more than the cold conclusions of reason.
03:58When viewed in the light of formal logic,
04:00there is not one thing of which to be ashamed.
04:03But nevertheless, a shame rises within me at the recollection.
04:07And in the pride of my manhood,
04:09I feel that my manhood has in unaccountable ways been smirched and sullied.
04:14All of which is neither here nor there.
04:19The speed with which I ran from the galley
04:23caused excruciating pain in my knee,
04:25and I sat down helplessly at the break of the poop.
04:29But the cockney had not pursued me.
04:32Look at him, Ron! Look at him, Ron!
04:34I could hear him crying.
04:36And with a gimelag at that.
04:38Come on back, you poor little mamas, darling.
04:42I won't hit you. No, I won't.
04:45I came back and went on with my work.
04:49And here the episode ended for the time,
04:51though further developments were yet to take place.
04:53I set the breakfast table in the cabin,
04:56and at seven o'clock waited on the hunters and officers.
04:59The storm had evidently broken during the night,
05:02though a huge sea was still running and a stiff wind blowing.
05:06Sail had been made in the early watches
05:08so that the ghost was racing along under everything
05:11except the two top sails and the flying jib.
05:13These three sails I gathered from the conversation
05:17were to be set immediately after breakfast.
05:20I learned also that Wolf Larson was anxious
05:22to make the most of the storm
05:23which was driving him to the southwest
05:25in that portion of the sea
05:27where he expected to pick up with the north trade winds.
05:31It was before this steady wind
05:35that he hoped to make the major portion of the run to Japan,
05:38curving south into the tropics and north again
05:41as he approached the coast of Asia.
05:43After breakfast, I had another unenviable experience.
05:49When I'd finished washing the dishes,
05:51I cleaned the cabin stove and carried the ashes up on deck to empty them.
05:57Wolf Larson and Henderson were standing near the wheel,
05:59deep in conversation.
06:01The sailor Johnson was steering.
06:04As I started toward the weather side,
06:06I saw him make a sudden motion with his head,
06:08which I mistook for a token of recognition in good morning.
06:11In reality, he was attempting to warn me
06:13to throw my ashes over the lee side.
06:16Unconscious of my blunder,
06:18I passed by Wolf Larson and the hunter
06:19and flung the ashes over the side to windward.
06:23The wind drove them back,
06:24and not only over me,
06:26but over Henderson and Wolf Larson.
06:29The next instant, the latter kicked me violently.
06:33As a curse kicked.
06:35I'd not realized there could be so much pain in a kick
06:37reeled away from him and leaned against the cabin
06:40in a half-fainting condition.
06:42Everything was swimming before my eyes,
06:44and I turned sick.
06:46The nausea overpowered me,
06:48and I managed to crawl to the side of the vessel,
06:50but Wolf Larson did not follow me up.
06:52Brushing the ashes from his clothes,
06:54he had resumed his conversation with Henderson.
06:56Johansson, who had seen the affair from the break of the poop,
07:00sent a couple of sailors aft to clean up the mess.
07:04Later in the morning,
07:05I received a surprise of a totally different sort.
07:09Following the cook's instructions,
07:10I had gone into Wolf Larson's stateroom
07:12to put it to rights and make the bed.
07:14Against the wall, near the head of the bunk,
07:17was a rack, filled with books.
07:20I glanced over them,
07:22noting with astonishment
07:23such names as Shakespeare, Tennyson,
07:26Poe, and De Quincey.
07:28There were scientific works, too,
07:30among which were represented men
07:31such as Tyndall, Proctor, and Darwin.
07:34Astronomy and physics were represented,
07:36and I remarked
07:37both in his age of fable,
07:39Shaw's history of English and American literature,
07:42and Johnson's natural history
07:43in two large volumes.
07:46Then, there were a number of grammars
07:47such as Metcalfe's and Reed and Kellogg's,
07:50and I smiled as I saw a copy of the dean's English.
07:53I could not reconcile these books
07:55with the man from what I had seen of him,
07:57and I wondered if he could possibly read them.
07:59But when came to the bed,
08:02I found between the blankets
08:03dropped apparently,
08:05as he had sunk off to sleep,
08:07a complete browning,
08:08the Cambridge edition.
08:10It was opened at in a balcony,
08:13and I noticed here and there
08:14passages underlined in pencil.
08:18Further, letting drop the volume
08:20during a lurch of the ship,
08:21a sheet of paper fell out.
08:23It was scrawled over
08:24with geometrical diagrams
08:25and calculations of some sort.
08:27It was patent that this terrible man
08:30was no ignorant Claude,
08:32such as one would inevitably suppose him
08:34to be from his exhibitions of brutality.
08:37At once, he became an enigma.
08:41One side or the other of his nature
08:43was perfectly comprehensible,
08:44but both sides together were bewildering.
08:47I had already remarked
08:48that his language was excellent,
08:50marred with an occasional slight inaccuracy.
08:52Of course, in common speech
08:54with the sailors and hunters,
08:55it sometimes fairly bristled with errors,
08:57which was due to the vernacular itself,
08:59but in the few words he had held with me,
09:01it had been clear and correct.
09:04The glimpse I had of this other side
09:07must have emboldened me,
09:08for I resolved to speak to him
09:10about the money I had lost.
09:12I have been robbed,
09:13I said to him a little later,
09:15when I found him pacing up
09:17and down the poop alone.
09:19Sir, he corrected,
09:21not harshly, but sternly.
09:23I have been robbed, sir,
09:25I amended.
09:26How did it happen, he asked.
09:28Then I told him the whole circumstance,
09:30how my clothes had been left
09:31to dry in the galley,
09:32and how later I was nearly beaten
09:34by the cook when I mentioned the matter.
09:36He smiled at my recital.
09:38Pickings, he concluded.
09:39Cookies pickings.
09:41And don't you think
09:41your miserable life worth the price?
09:43Besides, consider it a lesson.
09:45You'll learn in time
09:46how to take care of your money
09:47for yourself.
09:48I suppose up to now
09:49your lawyer has done it for you,
09:51or your business agent.
09:53I could feel the quiet sneer
09:54through his words,
09:55but demanded,
09:56how can I get it back?
09:59That's your lookout.
10:00You haven't any lawyer
10:01or business agent now,
10:02so you'll have to depend on yourself.
10:04When you get a dollar,
10:06hang on to it.
10:07A man who leaves his money
10:08lying around the way you did
10:09deserves to lose it.
10:11Besides, you have sinned.
10:13You have no right
10:13to put temptation
10:14in the way of your fellow creatures.
10:15You tempted Cookie,
10:18and he fell.
10:19You have placed his immortal soul
10:21in jeopardy.
10:22By the way,
10:24do you believe in the immortal soul?
10:27His lids lifted lazily
10:29as he asked the question,
10:32and it seemed that the deeps
10:33were opening to me,
10:34and that I was gazing into his soul.
10:37But it was an illusion.
10:39Far as it might have seemed,
10:40no man has ever seen very far
10:43into Wolf Larson's soul,
10:45or seen it at all.
10:46Of this, I am convinced.
10:49It was a very lonely soul,
10:51I was to learn,
10:52that never unmasked,
10:55though at rare moments
10:56it played at doing so.
10:57I read immortality in your eyes,
11:02I answered,
11:02dropping the sir.
11:04An experiment,
11:05for I thought the intimacy
11:06of the conversation
11:07warranted it.
11:08He took no notice.
11:10By that, I take it,
11:11you see something
11:11that is alive,
11:13but that necessarily
11:14does not have to live forever.
11:17I read more than that,
11:19I continued boldly.
11:21Then you read consciousness.
11:24You read the consciousness
11:24of life that is alive,
11:26but still no further away.
11:28No endlessness of life.
11:32How clearly he thought,
11:33and how well he expressed
11:34what he thought.
11:35From regarding me curiously,
11:37he turned his head
11:37and glanced out
11:38over the leaden sea
11:39to windward.
11:41A bleakness came into his eyes,
11:43and the lines of his mouth
11:45grew severe and harsh.
11:48He was evidently
11:49in a pessimistic mood.
11:51Then, to what end?
11:53He demanded abruptly,
11:55turning back to me.
11:56If I am immortal, why?
11:59I halted.
12:00How could I explain
12:01my idealism to this man?
12:03How could I put into speech
12:04a something felt,
12:05a something like
12:06the strains of music
12:07heard in sleep,
12:08a something that
12:09convinced yet
12:10transcended utterance?
12:14What do you believe, then?
12:16I countered.
12:17I believe that life
12:20is a mess,
12:21he answered promptly.
12:23It is like yeast,
12:24a ferment,
12:25a thing that moves
12:26and may move for a minute,
12:28an hour, a year,
12:28a hundred years,
12:30but that in the end
12:31will cease to move.
12:33The big eat the little,
12:34that they may continue to move.
12:36The strong eat the weak,
12:38that they may retain
12:40their strength.
12:40The lucky eat the most
12:42and move the longest.
12:43That is all.
12:45What do you make
12:46of those things?
12:47He swept his arm
12:48in an impatient gesture
12:49toward a number
12:50of the sailors
12:51who were working
12:51on some kind of rope stuff
12:53amid ships.
12:55They move.
12:56So does jellyfish move.
12:58They move in order to eat,
12:59in order that they may
13:00keep moving.
13:01There you have it.
13:02They live for their belly's sake,
13:04and the belly
13:04is for their sake.
13:06It's a circle.
13:07You get nowhere.
13:09Neither do they.
13:10In the end,
13:11they come to a standstill.
13:12They move no more.
13:14They are dead.
13:16They have dreams,
13:18I interrupted.
13:19Radiant, flashing dreams
13:20of grub,
13:22he concluded sententiously.
13:25And of more grub,
13:28of a larger appetite
13:29and more luck
13:30in satisfying it.
13:31His voice sounded harsh.
13:33There was no levity in it.
13:35For look you,
13:37they dream of making
13:38lucky voyages,
13:40which will bring them
13:40more money,
13:41of becoming the mates
13:42of ships,
13:43of finding fortunes,
13:44in short,
13:45of being in a better position
13:46for preying on their fellows,
13:48of having all night in
13:50good grub
13:50and somebody else
13:51to do the dirty work.
13:52You and I
13:53are just like them.
13:54There is no difference,
13:55except that we
13:56have eaten more
13:57and better.
13:58I am eating them now,
14:00and you too.
14:01But in the past,
14:03you've eaten more
14:03than I have.
14:04You have slept
14:05in soft beds
14:06and worn fine clothes
14:08and eaten good meals.
14:10Who made those beds
14:11and those clothes
14:12and those meals?
14:14Not you.
14:15You never made anything
14:16in your own sweat.
14:18You live on an income
14:19which your father earned.
14:21You are like a frigate bird
14:22swooping down
14:24upon the boobies
14:25and robbing them
14:26of the fish
14:26they have caught.
14:27You are one
14:28with a crowd of men
14:29who have made
14:30what they call
14:31a government,
14:32who are masters
14:33of all the other men
14:34and who eat the food
14:35the other men get
14:36and would like
14:37to eat themselves.
14:38You wear the warm clothes.
14:41They made the clothes,
14:42but they shiver in rags
14:44and ask you,
14:45the lawyer or business agent
14:46who handles your money,
14:47for a job.
14:49But that is beside the matter,
14:52I cried.
14:53Not at all.
14:56He was speaking rapidly now
14:57and his eyes were flashing.
14:59It is piggishness
15:00and it is life.
15:02Of what use or sense
15:03is an immortality
15:04of piggishness.
15:06What is the end?
15:07What is it all about?
15:08You have made no food
15:08and yet the food
15:09you have eaten or wasted
15:10might have saved the lives
15:11of a score of wretches
15:13who made the food
15:14but did not eat it.
15:15What immortal end
15:16did you serve?
15:17Or did they?
15:18Consider yourself and me.
15:20What does your boasted
15:20immortality amount to
15:22when your life
15:22runs foul of mine?
15:24You would like
15:25to go back to the land
15:26which is a favorable place
15:28for your kind
15:29of piggishness.
15:30It is a whim of mine
15:31to keep you aboard
15:32this ship
15:32where my piggishness
15:34flourishes
15:34and keep you.
15:36I will.
15:37I may make or break you.
15:38You may die today
15:39this week or next month.
15:40I could kill you now
15:41with a blow of my fist
15:42for you are
15:43a miserable weakling.
15:45But if we are immortal
15:46what is the reason
15:48for this?
15:49To be piggish as you
15:50and I have been
15:51all our lives
15:52does not seem to be
15:53just the thing
15:54for mortals to be doing.
15:55Again
15:56what's it all about?
15:59Why have I kept you here?
16:00Because you're stronger
16:03I managed to blurt out.
16:05Ah
16:06but why stronger?
16:07He went on at once
16:08with his perpetual queries
16:10because I am a bigger
16:11bit of the ferment
16:12than you.
16:13Don't you see?
16:15Don't you see?
16:17But the hopelessness
16:18of it
16:19I protested.
16:20I agree with you
16:21he answered.
16:22Then why move at all?
16:23Since moving is living
16:24without moving
16:25and being part of the yeast
16:26there would be
16:26no hopelessness.
16:27but
16:29and there it is
16:30we want to live
16:32and move
16:33though we have no reason to
16:34because it happens
16:35that it is the nature of life
16:37to live and move
16:39to want to live and move.
16:41If it were not for this
16:42life would be dead.
16:44It is because of this life
16:46that is in you
16:47that you dream
16:48of your immortality.
16:50The life that is in you
16:51is alive
16:51and wants to go on
16:52being alive forever.
16:54Bah!
16:54An eternity
16:56of piggishness.
16:58He abruptly
16:59turned on his heel
16:59and started forward.
17:01He stopped
17:01at the break of the poop
17:02and called me to him.
17:04By the way
17:04how much was it
17:06that cookie got away with?
17:07He asked.
17:08A hundred and eighty-five dollars
17:10sir
17:10I answered.
17:11He nodded his head.
17:13A moment later
17:13as I started down
17:14the companion stairs
17:15to lay the table
17:16for dinner
17:17I heard him
17:18loudly cursing
17:19some men
17:19amid ships.
17:22Chapter 6
17:23By the following morning
17:25the storm had blown itself
17:27quite out
17:27and the ghost
17:28was rolling slightly
17:29on a calm sea
17:30without a breath of wind.
17:32Occasional light airs
17:33were felt however
17:34and Wolf Larson
17:35patrolled the poop
17:36constantly
17:37his eyes
17:38ever searching the sea
17:39to the north eastward
17:41from which direction
17:42the great trade wind
17:43must blow.
17:45The men were all on deck
17:45and busy preparing
17:46their various boats
17:47for the season's hunting.
17:49There are seven boats
17:50aboard the captain's dinghy
17:51and the six
17:53which the hunters
17:54will use.
17:55Three
17:56a hunter
17:57a boat puller
17:57and a boat steerer
17:59compose a boat's crew.
18:01On board the schooner
18:02the boat pullers
18:02and steerers
18:03are the crew.
18:04The hunters too
18:05are supposed to be
18:05in command of the watches
18:06subject always
18:07to the orders
18:08of Wolf Larson.
18:09All this and more
18:10I have learned.
18:11The ghost is considered
18:12the fastest schooner
18:13in both the San Francisco
18:15and Victoria fleets.
18:16In fact
18:17she was once
18:18a private yacht
18:18and was built for speed.
18:20Her lines and fittings
18:21though I know nothing
18:22about such things
18:23speak for themselves.
18:24Johnson was telling me
18:25about her
18:26in a short chat
18:27I had with him
18:28during yesterday's
18:29second dog watch.
18:30He spoke enthusiastically
18:31with the love
18:32for fine crafts
18:33such as men feel
18:34for horses.
18:35He is greatly disgusted
18:37with the outlook
18:37and I am given
18:38to understand
18:39that Wolf Larson
18:39bears a very unsavory
18:41reputation
18:42among the sealing captains.
18:44It was the ghost
18:45herself
18:45that lured Johnson
18:46into signing
18:47for the voyage
18:48but he is already
18:49beginning to repent.
18:50As he told me
18:52the ghost is
18:53an 80 ton schooner
18:55of a remarkably
18:56fine model.
18:57Her beam or width
18:58is 23 feet
18:59and her length
19:00a little over 90 feet.
19:02A lead keel
19:03of fabulous
19:03but unknown weight
19:04makes her very stable
19:06while she carries
19:07an immense spread
19:08of canvas.
19:09From the deck
19:10to the truck
19:10of the main top mast
19:13is something
19:13over 100 feet
19:15while the foremast
19:17with its top mast
19:18is 8 or 10 feet
19:19shorter.
19:20I am giving
19:21these details
19:21so that the size
19:22of this little
19:23floating world
19:23which holds
19:2422 men
19:25may be appreciated.
19:27It is a very little
19:28world, a moat,
19:29a speck
19:29and I marvel
19:31that men should dare
19:31to venture the sea
19:32on a contrivance
19:33so small
19:35and fragile.
19:36Wolf Larson
19:37has also a reputation
19:38for reckless
19:39carrying on
19:40of sail.
19:41I overheard Henderson
19:42and another of the hunters
19:43Standish, a Californian,
19:44talk about it.
19:46Two years ago
19:47he dismasted the ghost
19:48in a gale
19:49on Bering Sea
19:50whereupon
19:51the present mass
19:51were put
19:52in which are stronger
19:54and heavier
19:54in every way.
19:56He is said to have
19:56remarked when he put
19:57them in
19:58that he preferred
19:58turning her over
19:59to losing the stakes.
20:01Every man aboard
20:02with the exception
20:03of Johansson
20:04who is rather overcome
20:05by his promotion
20:06seems to have an excuse
20:07for having sailed
20:08on the ghost.
20:09Half the men
20:10forward
20:11are deep water sailors
20:12and their excuses
20:13that they did not
20:14know anything
20:15about her
20:15or her captain
20:16and those who do know
20:18whisper that the hunters
20:19while excellent shots
20:20were so notorious
20:21for their quarrelsome
20:22and rascally proclivities
20:24that they could not
20:25sign on any decent schooner.
20:28I have made the acquaintance
20:29of another one
20:30of the crew
20:30Lewis he has called
20:31a rotund
20:32and jovial faced
20:33Nova Scotia Irishman
20:35and a very sociable fellow
20:37prone to talk
20:37as long as he can
20:38find a listener.
20:39In the afternoon
20:42while the cook
20:43was below asleep
20:44and I was peeling
20:45the everlasting potatoes
20:47Lewis dropped
20:48into the galley
20:49for a yarn.
20:51His excuse
20:51for being aboard
20:52was that he was drunk
20:53when he signed.
20:55He assured me
20:55again and again
20:56that it was the last
20:57thing in the world
20:57he would dream of doing
20:58in a sober moment.
21:00It seems that he had
21:00been seal hunting
21:01regularly each season
21:03for a dozen years
21:04and is accounted
21:05one of the two
21:07or three
21:08very best
21:09boat steers
21:10in both fleets.
21:11Ah my boy
21:13he shook his head
21:13ominously at me
21:14tis the worst schooner
21:16ye could have selected
21:17nor were ye drunk
21:19at the time
21:20as I was.
21:22Tis sealing
21:23is the sailor's paradise
21:25on other ships
21:27than this.
21:28The mate was the first
21:29but mark me words
21:30they'll be more dead
21:31before the trip
21:32is done with.
21:33Hist now
21:34between you
21:35and meself
21:36and the stanchion there
21:37this wolf Larson
21:38is a regular devil
21:40and the ghost
21:42will be the hell ship
21:43like she's always been
21:44since he had
21:46old of her.
21:48Don't I know
21:49don't I know
21:51don't I remember
21:52him in Hackaday
21:53two years gone
21:56when he had a row
21:57and shot four
21:58of his men
21:59wasn't I
22:00laying on the emma
22:02not three hundred
22:05yards away
22:06and there was a man
22:08the same year
22:08he killed with a blow
22:09if his fist
22:11yes sir
22:12killed him dead oh
22:13his head must have
22:15smashed like an eggshell
22:17and wasn't there
22:18the governor
22:19of Kura Island
22:20and the chief of police
22:22Japanese gentlemen sir
22:24and
22:24didn't they come
22:25aboard the ghost
22:26as his guests
22:27are bringing
22:28their wives along
22:29wee and pretty little
22:30bits of things
22:31like you see him
22:32painted on fans
22:33and he was a getting
22:35under way
22:36didn't the fond
22:37husbands
22:38get left astern
22:39like in their
22:40sampan
22:40as it might be
22:42by accident
22:42and wasn't it
22:43a week later
22:44that the poor
22:45little ladies
22:45was put ashore
22:46on the other side
22:47of the island
22:47with nothing
22:48before them
22:49but to walk home
22:50across the mountains
22:51on their teeny
22:52weeny little
22:53straw sandals
22:54which wouldn't
22:55hang together

33:45of him
33:45but hesitated
33:47it was probably
33:49the first time
33:50he had been

33:52johansson who
33:53had caught

34:10yes sir
34:12the mate
34:13acknowledged
34:13submissively
34:14in the meantime
34:15harrison had
34:16started out
34:17on the
34:17halyards
34:17was looking
34:18up from
34:18the galley

34:20trembling
34:21as with
34:21ague
34:22in every
34:22limb
34:23he proceeded
34:24very slowly
34:25and cautiously
34:26an inch
34:27at a time
34:28outlined
34:28against the
34:29clear blue
34:30of the sky
34:30he had
34:31the appearance
34:31of an
34:32enormous

34:33crawling
34:34along
34:34the
34:34tracery
34:35of its
34:35web
34:35it was
34:37a slight
34:37uphill
34:38climb
34:38for the
34:39four-sail
34:39peaked high
34:40and the
34:40halyards

34:43gave him
34:44separate
34:44holds
34:45for hands
34:45and feet
34:46but the
34:46trouble
34:46lay
34:47in that
34:48the wind
34:48was not
34:48strong
34:49enough
34:49nor steady
34:50enough
34:50to keep
34:50the sail
34:50full
34:51when he
34:52was halfway
34:52out
34:52the ghost
34:53took a
34:53long roll
34:54to windward
34:54and back
34:55again into
34:56the hollow
34:56between
34:57two seas
34:57harrison
34:59ceased
34:59his progress
35:00and held
35:01on tightly
35:01eighty feet
35:03beneath
35:03i could see
35:04the agonized
35:05strain
35:06of his
35:06muscles
35:06as he
35:07gripped
35:07for very
35:08life
35:08the sail
35:09emptied
35:09and the
35:10gaff
35:10swung
35:10amid

35:11the
35:12halyards
35:12slackened
35:12and though

35:15see them
35:15sag beneath
35:16the weight
35:16of his
35:17body
35:17then
35:18the gaff
35:19swung
35:19to the
35:20side
35:20with an
35:20abrupt
35:21swiftness
35:21the great
35:22sail
35:23boomed
35:23like a
35:24cannon
35:24and the
35:25three rows

35:28like a
