Be vigilant, and keep your children close at all times. It's the advice coming from Akil DeVignes, the hero who rescued a young child from a ferris wheel at Movietowne on Sunday. Rynessa Cutting has more.
Transcript
00:00When everything happened, and I reached a lot of people, you know, messaging and stuff,
00:05something like that, and I still want to just think about the situation for a moment.
00:09I was like, you know, I post a status on WhatsApp, like, you know, it sort of happened.
00:16He has arrived, not knowing I was there for different purposes,
00:18and I feel I was there, you know, for the purpose of receiving this little boy by God,
00:24and give God glory and praise and thanks for that.
00:26Akeel Devines tells TV6 News what was supposed to be a trip to the mall with his daughters
00:32turned into an impromptu visit to Movie Town on Sunday.
00:37But when he and his daughters got onto the Ferris wheel,
00:41they would never have imagined what would have happened next.
00:56And that he did.
01:22With no safety equipment, Devines scaled the Ferris wheel barehanded
01:26and managed to place the child safely into the bucket.
01:52And just like that, Devines became a national hero.
02:13Now we're seeing people saying they deserve some national recognition for this,
02:18a Commonwealth medal or so.
02:19How do you feel about that?
02:20Of course, I welcome that.
02:22I mean, of course, we're not going to commend people for the brave acts.
02:27And the support from social media, because, you know, national public and the whole,
02:32it's very overwhelming, and I feel very thankful for it,
02:34because I will say right now, you know, there's a lot of negativity going on, right,
02:40in things of crime and stuff, and for something like this,
02:42to see how they're spreading it and they're talking about it.
02:45And it also shows that, you know, the country have hope, you know,
02:48there's good people in the country, and, you know,
02:52you could always strive to be better, the better.
02:54He's sharing the following advice to parents.
02:57Once you have children who's young, you know, they think and impulse,
03:01they do certain things that, you know, in the neck of a moment.
03:06And so you have to be very, you know, you have to be very observant of them.
03:10You have to be very, I mean, for me, my eyes are always on my children,
03:14like when you hear them, you know, it will be out of my eyesight.
03:16I will be here, and I'll be watching them, like, 24-7.
03:19If I realize they're going in danger, I come close to them to protect them.
03:22So it's just, you know, proper parenting and being aware of the protocols
03:27and all the safety rules.
03:30CCTV footage released by Movietown shows the moment the four-year-old child
03:35runs and climbs onto the canopy of the Ferris wheel while it was in motion.
03:40The video also shows park attendants trying to remove him, but to no avail.
03:46Movietown is urging all parents and guardians to keep a close eye on their children,
03:50especially near rides and attractions.
