00:00Aston Villa are entering a carefully managed summer as they look to strengthen the Unai
00:08Emery squad while staying within the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules.
00:13Following a season of significant progress, culminating in another season with European
00:19qualification, the focus is now on maintaining momentum without breaching financial thresholds.
00:26Villa are combining smart recruitment with strategic sales, ensuring compliance while
00:32keeping Emery's plans on track.
00:34Key outgoings have already played a role in balancing the books with homegrown players
00:39moved on for pure profit.
00:41At the same time, the club are export luring new arrivals that add quality without inflating
00:46the wage bill or costs up front.
00:49We spoke to Charlie Haffenden of Birmingham World to get an insight into Villa's financial
00:54position and transfer thinking.
00:57Villa are still expected to be active, but it will be measured as contract renewals, outgoings
01:01and creative signings continue behind the scenes.
01:05The club's leadership believe their current model offers the structure needed to compete
01:10while staying financially secure.
01:13Charlie on Aston Villa and obviously the main headline surrounding them is the PSR and unfortunately
01:20they're a club that, you know, despite all this success they've had on the pitch and Emery's
01:25sort of revival, they do fall into that PSR sort of situation.
01:29They obviously had to sell last summer as well.
01:31In terms of players, they should sell, there's obviously some candidates, Martinez is one
01:37of them, you know, Rodgers is a huge asset that they've got, you know, Jacob Ramsey as
01:41well.
01:42I mean, it's a difficult situation they're in, but if they did have to sell anyone, you
01:47know, who would they sell and then also just break down the PSR situation because it is
01:52quite a bit of a handful and then maybe you look at the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and
01:56you think, why is it not also affecting them, but it is Aston Villa.
02:01Yeah, it's crazy really that Villa are the team in the Premier League affected most by
02:04this, considering they're about to head into their third consecutive season in European
02:08football, which brings in such an incredible income for the football club.
02:12The, in terms of the fan base, the attendances have been higher, the merchandise sales have
02:16been better since they switched to Adidas, it's all, and the sponsorships as well have
02:20been increasing, so how on earth are they still struggling?
02:22And you can also include in that that they sold Diaby for 50 million, they sold John
02:27Duran for 70, Douglas Luiz for 45, how are they still in a situation?
02:32Well, their wage bill is incredibly high compared to a lot of teams in and around them, not in
02:37terms of total wage bill, but in terms of revenue to wages, and that's really been a
02:42struggle for them.
02:43Of course, they've been bringing in players to replace those that have gone, Amador Inanna
02:47costing 50 million pounds was a big outlay.
02:49And you see Jadon Filagin coming back and they're being sold again.
02:53There have been players brought in Mautzen as well as another one, 37 and a half million.
02:57So it's not quite been just sales and then no incomings, it has been quite expensive as
03:02well.
03:03Premier League clubs are only allowed to lose 105 million pounds over a three year period.
03:08I say only, that sounds a bit crazy in itself, doesn't it?
03:10But that is the rule.
03:11And Villa are about 50 million short at the moment, with that deadline approaching quickly
03:16on June 30, if they need to sort out their business.
03:19And Emi Martinez was one name you mentioned.
03:21I think he's probably the favourite to leave.
03:23He could probably fetch between 40 and 50 million for him, given he's still got quite
03:28a few years left in his contract.
03:29He's a World Cup winner, two-time Yashin Award winner as well.
03:34I think maybe that could be a decent sale for them.
03:37But of course, you then got to replace him.
03:39That probably has to be done after the deadline.
03:41And Leon Bailey is potentially another one.
03:43He's not quite as valuable as he once was, but maybe 25 million pounds for him.
03:48And then, as you mentioned, the likes of Morgan Rodgers and Jacob Ramsey.
03:51Villa really don't want to sell either of those players.
03:54If they are going to sell one, it will be Ramsey, I feel.
03:57But how much are you realistically going to get for him?
04:00It's a really complex one.
04:01And Villa fans, rightfully frustrated, given how many years they've been in Europe now,
04:05getting a potential points deduction or a hefty fine.
04:08So, yeah, it's really tricky.
04:10And then there's the UEFA squad cost rules as well,
04:12where you can spend 70% of your revenue on player costs,
04:16which is effectively salaries and bonuses.
04:18Villa are in the 80s of the percents at the moment.
04:21So you'd have to get rid of Martinez.
04:23You'd have to get rid of a Bailey, maybe.
04:25Luca Dean's a high earner, but they want to keep him ideally.
04:28Of course, talks of Rash were coming back completely out the window
04:31because he's on £300,000 a week.
04:33It's a really crazy situation.
04:35So Villa, they want the squad depth.
04:37Emery wants to have two good players in every single position,
04:40but they simply can't afford it unless they bring in youngsters, do you feel?
04:43DEVIL.
