02:00From ABC News World Headquarters in New York, this is World News Tonight with David Muir.
02:08Good evening, President Trump under pressure, calling for the release of grand jury testimony in the Epstein case.
02:14The Justice Department filing a motion to do that.
02:17And late today, the president suing The Wall Street Journal.
02:20Here's ABC's Mary Bruce.
02:22Tonight, as President Trump tries to silence an uproar from some of his own supporters,
02:27the Justice Department now asking courts in New York and Florida to unseal grand jury records
02:33in the case of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
02:36Trump saying, based on the ridiculous amount of publicity given to Jeffrey Epstein,
02:41I have asked Attorney General Pam Bondi to produce any and all pertinent grand jury testimony,
02:47subject to court approval.
02:49But that could take weeks or even months,
02:51and would not fulfill his team's promise to release the full FBI files on Epstein.
02:56Here's the problem.
02:58The grand jury testimony is largely about Epstein and Maxwell,
03:02not about all the rich and powerful men who abused, assaulted, and abandoned young women.
03:08Those people are still being protected.
03:10Today, I asked the president why he isn't doing more.
03:14Mr. President, why haven't you ordered Pam Bondi to release the full files?
03:18The president's announcement came just hours after the Wall Street Journal reported that in 2003,
03:23he allegedly sent Epstein a letter the paper described as, quote,
03:27bawdy for Epstein's 50th birthday.
03:30ABC News has not been able to confirm the existence of the letter.
03:33But in an interview with the journal, Trump denies he wrote it.
03:36And tonight, he filed a $10 billion lawsuit against the paper and its conservative owner, Rupert Murdoch.
03:42The president once had a friendly relationship with Epstein, socializing in New York and Palm Beach.
03:48In 2002, he told New York Magazine,
03:50I've known Jeff for 15 years.
03:52Terrific guy.
03:53He's a lot of fun to be with.
03:55It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do,
03:59and many of them are on the younger side.
04:01No doubt about it, Jeffrey enjoys his social life.
04:04When Epstein was arrested in 2019,
04:07Trump said they'd had a falling out and hadn't spoken in 15 years.
04:10Some of Trump's top supporters, including his FBI director, Cash Patel,
04:15and Patel's number two, Dan Bongino, have long promoted shadowy Epstein conspiracies.
04:21I don't trust any story they tell me about Jeffrey Epstein.
04:24There is a reason this client list is hidden.
04:27Earlier this year, Bondi said she had that list.
04:31It's sitting on my desk right now to review.
04:33But over the 4th of July weekend,
04:35the Justice Department and FBI said the list didn't exist,
04:38and that they would not release any more information about Epstein,
04:42leaving some of the president's top supporters disillusioned.
04:46Dan Bongino, who's always, like, shouting from the rooftops,
04:49we're going to get to the bottom of this and find out who these people are.
04:51Everyone's saying, no, no, Epstein killed himself.
04:54No, nothing to see here.
04:55And it's like, okay, well, that's why people are cynical.
04:58And with tonight, some of the president's top supporters are celebrating the president's
05:02decision to release this kind of testimony, though this is a lengthy process.
05:06These kinds of transcripts are usually highly protected,
05:09but some of the president's supporters say this is uniting the MAGA movement,
05:13though it remains to be seen just how much new information will ultimately be released.
05:17Mary Bruce at the White House tonight, thank you.
05:20Ten Americans and permanent U.S. residents seized and held by authorities in Venezuela
05:24are now coming home.
05:26The U.S. Embassy in Venezuela releasing this photo of the Americans.
05:30The United States had considered them to be wrongfully detained.
05:33The Americans also taking this selfie on the plane back home.
05:37In the exchange, El Salvador released more than 250 Venezuelans who had been deported in
05:43the Trump administration's crackdown.
05:45The U.S. had sent many of those Venezuelans to a notorious prison in El Salvador in that
05:50airlift back in March.
05:52ABC's Rachel Scott leads us off with late details just coming in.
05:55Tonight, the White House announcing 10 Americans who were detained in Venezuela are on their
06:02way home after a large-scale prisoner swap.
06:05Their release comes in exchange for more than 250 Venezuelan migrants who were deported by
06:10the Trump administration as part of his immigration crackdown and sent to El Salvador's notorious
06:16mega prison.
06:17El Salvador's president tonight releasing this video of those prisoners boarding planes in
06:21handcuffs, saying we've handed over all Venezuelan nationals detained in our country.
06:27Among those released tonight, 37-year-old Lucas Hunter, who was detained on a surfing trip,
06:32his family pleading for his return.
06:35Bring Lucas home safe.
06:36Also free tonight, Jorge Vargas, a grandfather who was detained last September.
06:41His family says his health has been in decline.
06:43And U.S. Navy SEAL Wilbert Casanita arrested in his hotel room while visiting a friend.
06:49Secretary of State Marco Rubio saying, quote,
06:52Every wrongfully detained American in Venezuela is now free and back in our homeland.
06:58Secretary Rubio thanking El Salvador's president for securing this agreement,
07:03calling it unacceptable that those Americans were detained,
07:06saying all of them are now on their way to freedom.
07:09Rachel Scott, thank you.
07:11Now to the tragic accident that took the life of three sheriff's deputies in L.A. County.
07:16The explosion in the parking lot of an arson explosives detail facility.
07:21Sources say the deputies were handling explosives brought back from a seemingly routine call.
07:26Officers rushing to the scene.
07:28The FBI, LAPD and ATF offering help.
07:31The sheriff's department mourning their worst loss of life in 168 years.
07:36ABC's Trevor All is on the scene.
07:38Tonight, a horrific explosion at a law enforcement training center,
07:43killing three Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies.
07:46This is unfortunately the largest loss of life for us as the L.A. County Sheriff's Department since 1857.
07:56Witnesses reported hearing a massive boom just after 7.30 this morning
08:00at the arson explosives detail facility in East L.A.
08:04An explosion with three down. Fire is also notified.
08:07You can see two covered bodies of those deputies on the ground next to a truck with open doors,
08:13a third body covered by a blue tarp a few feet away.
08:16Sources tell ABC News preliminary information shows they were handling an explosive
08:21they'd recovered from a routine bomb squad call and believed it was safe to move when it exploded.
08:27The back window of that police SUV blown out.
08:30Investigators sealing off the scene for hours, all three deputies described as elite members
08:35of the arson explosive detail with decades of service.
08:39They are fantastic experts.
08:42And unfortunately, I lost three of them today.
08:45The sheriff visibly emotional as he addressed the media.
08:49I have met with two of the three families thus far.
08:51And as you can imagine, those were extremely challenging conversations.
08:59So anyways, ready for questions.
09:03And late today, a somber procession for those three fallen deputies.
09:08And Witt investigators are now trying to retrace the steps of these bomb squad members,
09:12trying to better understand the devices they picked up during that call on Thursday.
09:16They thought those devices were safe.
09:18They need to know how they exploded this morning.
09:21Witt has still a lot of questions in this case.
09:23Trevor, thank you.
09:25Next tonight, more than 60 million Americans on alert for flash flooding, dangerous heat
09:29and severe storms sweeping from the Midwest to New York.
09:32In Indiana, this camper caught in the floodwaters washed away and slammed into a bridge.
09:38A tropical rainstorm in Louisiana and across the Gulf up to two inches of rain in an hour.
09:44Lee Goldberg tracking it all in just a moment.
09:46But first, ABC's Alex Perez in New Orleans tonight.
09:49Tonight, millions on high alert for flash floods once again as summer storms fire up.
09:56Overnight, southern Indiana hit hard.
09:58In New Pekin, Indiana, this camper slamming into that bridge,
10:02bobbing in the water before it's crumpled like a soda can,
10:05sucked under the bridge by the fast-moving water.
10:08Oh, God, there it goes.
10:10Thankfully, no one was inside.
10:13From Texas.
10:14Oh, my God.
10:16And New Mexico.
10:19To New York City.
10:21The month of July has been marked by epic floods.
10:24And so far this year, the National Weather Service has issued more than 3,000 flood alerts.
10:29Along the Gulf Coast, tropical rainstorms flooding roads in New Iberia, Louisiana.
10:34And Whit, a flood watch remains in effect for southern Louisiana and Mississippi through tomorrow
10:39as this Gulf-fueled system moves in.
10:42Up to two inches of rain an hour possible in some areas.
10:46Whit.
10:47Alex Perez, thanks.
10:48Let's get right to Chief Meteorologist Lee Goldberg from our New York station, WABC.
10:52And, Lee, the risk of dangerous flooding continues tonight.
10:57And through the weekend, Whit, for many.
10:59Now, that flood watch will continue for parts of Louisiana and Mississippi for rounds of rain.
11:03That area of the country can take it.
11:05Two to four inches of rain.
11:06There will be some localized problems.
11:07But the more serious threat is to the north, especially over Virginia.
11:11In fact, we have ongoing flooding near the Richmond area right now.
11:14Rainfall rates up to about an inch in 30 minutes.
11:16And that could be severe during the overnight.
11:18In fact, the elevated flood risk goes from Kentucky all the way to the Outer Banks.
11:22Now, tomorrow, we're going to cover a complex of heavy damaging thunderstorms
11:25that will start near Des Moines in the morning, go to Chicago, Indianapolis, Detroit,
11:29even to Cleveland in the afternoon hours.
11:31We can see damaging winds and flash flooding, even a brief tornado from this.
11:34This is all being driven by the extreme heat from the middle of the country into the southeast.
11:38Heat alerts for 40 million Americans.
11:40It's only comfortable in the northeast, at least for now.
11:42Whit?
11:43All right.
11:43Well, brace for that.
11:44Lee Goldberg, as always.
11:46Turning now to the midair scare and the emergency landing because of a passenger,
11:50a pilot telling air traffic control the man tried to open an emergency exit
11:55and was fighting with a flight attendant.
11:57And late today, a reported engine fire in a Delta flight diverted to Los Angeles.
12:02Here's ABC's Marcus Moore.
12:05Tonight, this passenger on board a SkyWest flight is facing federal charges
12:09after allegedly trying to open the exit door mid-flight,
12:12shoving a flight attendant, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing.
12:16The passenger jet traveling from Omaha, Nebraska to Detroit Thursday
12:20with 71 passengers and crew on board.
12:23Listen as the pilot alerts air traffic control
12:25to a disturbance in the cabin with one of the passengers.
12:28In a fight with our flight attendant right now, trying to open that emergency exit.
12:32About half an hour later, the plane diverting to an airport in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
12:37Video showing officers escorting that passenger,
12:39identified as 23-year-old Mario Nick Prella, off the aircraft.
12:43The FAA says there have been 871 reports of unruly passengers so far this year.
12:48And tonight, the FAA says they're also investigating a new incident.
12:52This video showing a reported engine fire that forced a Delta plane headed to Atlanta
12:56to divert back to LAX right after takeoff.
13:00The FAA saying the plane landed safely and taxiing back to the gate without incident.
13:04With the passenger on that SkyWest flight remains in jail tonight,
13:08SkyWest says it has zero tolerance for unruly behavior
13:11and that the flight continued on to its destination with no other issues.
13:15All right, Marcus Moore, thank you.
13:17Now to the suspect and the brutal killing of a paddleboarder in Maine appearing in court.
13:22The 17-year-old charged with murder, and now prosecutors are asking he be tried as an adult.
13:27Here's ABC's chief investigative correspondent, Aaron Katursky.
13:31Tonight, the 17-year-old arrested in the death of paddleboarder Sunshine Stewart
13:35has been charged with murder.
13:36Court records identify the teen as Devin Young from Frankfurt, Maine,
13:40and prosecutors say he acted with depraved indifference to Stewart's life
13:44when he allegedly strangled and bludgeoned her to death.
13:47Stewart's body was found on this woodsy island earlier this month.
13:50ABC News was granted access to the idyllic private pond where she had gone out paddleboarding alone.
13:55This is the spot where Sunshine Stewart left on her paddleboard.
13:58She put the board in the water, went for a quick swim, came up on that ladder,
14:02got on the board, and paddled out to 100-acre island.
14:06Around the backside of that island is where her body was found.
14:09Sources told ABC News the teen had been summering with his family
14:13at the same campground as the 48-year-old.
14:15As relieved as I am that we have some answers,
14:18it still just brings up just as many questions.
14:21It makes no sense.
14:23Today, Young appeared remotely in front of a judge and denied the allegations.
14:26The judge ordered he be kept at a juvenile detention center in Portland
14:30until his next court date in August.
14:32With This is Crawford Pond, it is simply magnificent,
14:35a real summer haven, and people here are just baffled.
14:39Not only the alleged killer was so young, but also living among them.
14:44With Aaron Katursky, our thanks to you tonight.
14:46When we come back, the TSA opens new lanes to speed up airport security.
14:51We'll tell you who gets to use them.

14:56And the incredible video coming in,
14:58the shark feeding frenzy near a popular New York beach.
15:01Plus the kiss cam moment causing a firestorm on social media.
15:04The new developments tonight.

15:12Officials say the 18-year-old was in the water near New Smyrna Beach this afternoon
15:16when a shark bit his foot.
15:18He's being treated for his injuries.
15:20And further up the East Coast, stunning new video.
15:22Take a look at this.
15:23As sharks go on a feeding frenzy,
15:25drone video shows an aerial view of bunker fish near New York's Fire Island.
15:30Sharks can be seen feasting on this buffet of thousands of tiny fish.
15:33The drone operator says a shark swam near two snorkelers, but they did not seem to notice.
15:40Well, new lanes easing up air travel for service members and families.
15:44Travelers will notice the honor lane and families on the fly lines at more TSA checkpoints.
15:49Uniformed members of the military can access honor lanes to move through security quicker.
15:55And the families on the fly program is rolling out dedicated lanes in areas where families often travel with children.
16:00When we come back, a movie prop whips up a big sale on the auction block.
16:05Details on the price tag and the Royal Connection.
16:08To the index now, in the end of an era for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,
16:14CBS is canceling the franchise in May of 2026.
16:18Despite some public criticism, the network's president says this is purely a financial decision
16:23and is not related to the show's performance, content, or other matters at CBS's parent company, Paramount.
16:30The Late Show began in 1993 with host David Letterman.
16:33A kiss cam sets off a firestorm on social media.
16:37The camera zoomed in on this couple embracing during a Coldplay concert in Boston.
16:42The two quickly ducked away from the camera.
16:44Coldplay frontman Chris Martin reacted, saying they're either having an affair or just very shy.
16:50The CEO of tech company Astronomer is reportedly the man in the video.
16:55The Astronomer says it has launched an investigation.
16:58An iconic movie prop snaps up a fortune at auction.
17:01Harrison Ford famously cracked this whip in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
17:10The winning bid, a staggering $525,000.
17:14The prop is not only a piece of film history.
17:17Ford gave the whip to then Prince Charles back in 1989, who gifted it to the late Princess Diana.
17:24Still ahead here, he crafted the songs that brought movies and TV shows to life.
17:28Tonight, we're remembering a legendary Hollywood lyricist.
17:33Finally tonight, remembering Alan Bergman, the lyrical mastermind who gave life to the silver screen.
17:40Alan Bergman was an award-winning lyricist behind timeless hits of the 70s and 80s.
17:47Writing multiple TV and film theme songs, including for the sitcoms Mod and Good Times.
17:52And from the 1982 film Tootsie, the song It Might Be You.
18:01Bergman known not only for his talent, but also for his enduring partnership with his songwriting wife, Marilyn, who died in 2022 at 93.
18:10The couple writing hundreds of songs together, winning four Emmys, two Grammys, and three Oscars over their career.
18:17Among their most famous lyrical works, You Don't Bring Me Flowers, written with Neil Diamond, later becoming a classic Barbara Streisand-Neil Diamond duet, performed at the Grammys in 1980.
18:27You Don't Bring Me Flowers, and arguably their biggest success, The Way We Were, recorded by Streisand for the 1973 film of the same name.
18:42Streisand performing at the Oscars in 2013.
18:46In the wake of Marilyn's death, Streisand writing,
18:51Marilyn and Alan Bergman were like family.
18:54Their songs are timeless, and so is our love.
18:57Alan crediting his professional relationship with his wife for repairing any rare friction in their romantic relationship.
19:04But if there is, most of the time it gets worked out in the work.
19:09It's very interesting.
19:11Alan died late Thursday at his home in Los Angeles after suffering from respiratory issues, according to a family spokesperson, but continued to write songs till the very end.
19:21Alan Bergman was 99.
19:23And late today, Barbara Streisand posting an emotional tribute, calling Bergman a father figure, and revealing the last time they spoke, he was working on a new song.
19:34Thanks for watching tonight.
