The Prime Minister says as soon as she received the intel report from the TTPS about a syndicate plotting a coordinated attack on State Officials and institutions, she instructed the AG to call for an SOE. Kamla Persad Bissessar says she will not stand idly by.
00:00Prime Minister Kamala Pisan-Busasa prefaces her statement on the state of emergency reflecting on her promise to address crime in Trinidad and Tobago as a matter of priority and that a UNC government, she says, would do everything necessary to ensure citizens felt safe in their homes, workplaces, schools and places of worship.
00:22Pisan-Busasa says on Thursday evening, she received an intelligence report from the police commissioner and immediately directed the attorney general to advise the president to declare a state of emergency.
00:35Her statement reads, quote, I will not stand idly by for years, months, weeks or even days while a minority of illegally armed individuals act in concert to intimidate the people of Trinidad and Tobago.
00:48I will not tolerate a resurgence of kidnappings for ransom and other heinous crimes initiated by gangs.
00:56I will not allow these elements of society to continue to terrorize and traumatize law-abiding citizens and to wreak havoc in our land, end quote.
01:05The Prime Minister says while in opposition, she repeatedly called for an SOE not as cheap political gimmickry to appease the population leading up to an election, but as a critical measure to attack the crime situation within the parameters of the law.
01:22She says her government walks the walk by taking urgent action to cut off this immediate threat at the root and to ensure the state of emergency brings tangible results in the fight against crime.
01:34From the time the SOE took effect, she says the TGPS immediately embarked on operations to secure the citizens and institutions that uphold the integrity of the state.
01:45The Prime Minister assured the population they will be informed as necessary in the coming days.
