Davey: Super-injunction was a cover-up

Sir Ed Davey accused Tories of letting down Afghans who supported British forces and protecting its ministers. It comes as a super-injunction blocking reporting about the “horrific” leak of data was lifted. The Ministry of Defence only became aware of the breach when excerpts from the dataset were posted anonymously on a Facebook group in August 2023, and a super-injunction was granted at the High Court in an attempt to prevent the Taliban from finding out about the leak. 00:00Like everyone else, I'm really surprised by this super injunction.

00:03I'm quite shocked by it.

00:05I'm afraid the Conservative government really let down so many Afghans.

00:09We had the appalling retreat from Kabul in 2021

00:12and the failure to get behind a lot of those Afghan soldiers

00:16and interpreters and translators who supported our troops is another scandal.

00:21This data leak that we're learning about now was truly horrific.

00:26The question we need to ask about the injunction

00:30is how much it was needed to protect those Afghans

00:34that the Conservative government let down

00:36and how much was it to protect ministers.

00:39And I'm afraid one's left with the impression that it went on far too long.

00:43I think we should all be grateful to the judge for this ruling

00:46that's exposed this attempted cover-up.

00:50We absolutely need answers to the questions from ministers.

00:53Liberal Democrats will be pressing them really hard at every opportunity

00:57to try to make sure we get answers for the British people

01:00and for those Afghans.
