Leigh Waldman is in Kerr County as rescue and recovery efforts continue following devastating floods in central Texas.
Transcript
00:00In Kerrville, Texas, the search for flood victims was temporarily halted on Sunday as another round of thunderstorms hit the region.
00:08It was the first delay since the July 4th floods, which killed at least 132 people, according to the Associated Press.
00:15The AP also says more than 160 people are still missing in Kerr County alone, with 10 more unaccounted for nearby.
00:22As the week begins, AccuWeather forecasts more rain and thunderstorms today, tonight, and tomorrow, falling across central Texas, where saturated ground and swollen rivers continue the heightened risk for renewed flash flooding.
00:37All right, AccuWeather partner, CNN News Source correspondent Lee Waldman is in Kerrville, Texas, with more.
00:42Lee, good morning.
00:43Can you give us the latest here as we continue to track more thunderstorms in central Texas for today?
00:52Well, the rain has been nonstop this morning, getting heavier at some parts, lighter in other parts.
00:58And we had some serious thunderstorms overnight.
01:01Our crews was talking about we all got woken up by the thunderstorms that were happening overnight.
01:07And I do want to point out the river behind us.
01:09You can see flowing quite quickly, and the water level in the river itself is fairly high here.
01:16Now, also off this corner of my eye, we see some search and rescue teams coming up.
01:21They have a dog with them.
01:22We know that this is one area that has been heavily searched.
01:26We saw boats in the water just last week with cadaver dogs going up and down.
01:32Those are getting started once again.
01:34Over the weekend, some of those ground search efforts did have to be delayed and halted because of weather that came into this area and that flooding risk that was posed here.
01:42And even though we have some rain right now, we see a team getting ready to start their search again.
01:47Now, Lee, have you seen or heard of any new flash flood rescues or road closures as storms pushed through the region here this morning?
01:57That's a good question.
02:02So we know that there have been some road closures around the Kerrville area where we are right now.
02:07Some low-lying roads that got covered by water over the weekend.
02:11And also in some surrounding counties like San Saba County and Lampasas County, there was some active rescues that happened.
02:19The Texas Game Wardens posted about it.
02:21Governor Greg Abbott posting about it.
02:22Having to rescue multiple people after the water levels rose quite quickly.
02:27Here in Kerrville, people have their eyes on the river.
02:30Obviously, we heard from officials over the weekend with these heavy rains moving in that there's a sense of PTSD almost.
02:37People are scared of the water now and what it's going to do to the river behind them after what we saw come through this area on the 4th of July.
02:45We can only expect that the mood is still so grim there.
02:48You know, we had some drier conditions and some maybe brighter light.
02:50But how are people holding up as the rescue and recovery drags on with new storms moving in?
02:56We know that people here in this community are deeply impacted by what happened in Kerrville and in the surrounding areas on the 4th of July when those floodwaters came in.
03:10Like you all had mentioned, at least 132 people are dead.
03:13More than 100 here in Kerr County alone.
03:16More than 150 across this entire region are still missing at this point.
03:20We haven't had a live rescue since the 4th of July itself.
03:23So it's a very grim feeling, people over the weekend coming out for vigils, trying to honor those who were killed.
03:30And behind us, you can see these crosses set up.
03:32We spoke to the artist here and he said that he's trying to make a cross for every life that was lost.
03:37And he hopes that this is another place where people can go and remember the ones who were taken.
03:43We were walking down there just last week before the display grew as large as it is now.
03:47And there was photos of some of those victims placed on those crosses, a ribbon from one of the camps that was impacted, the Heart of the Hills camp.
03:55So we know that it's a very sad, somber feeling all throughout the city of Kerrville and throughout the communities impacted by these floods.
