00:00This is Jay Carper and we're continuing the conversation on a Sabbath to Yahweh.
00:07In the previous video we began answering the question of who is the Sabbath for?
00:14We talked about how the scriptures say explicitly that the Sabbath was given to Israel and Judah.
00:21But I also showed that commandments given to Israel can apply far beyond native Israel.
00:28And the prophets say that Gentiles who join themselves to Israel's God are counted as native-born Israelites in the millennial era.
00:39And as far as salvation goes in God's standards of behavior, there's no difference between a native-born Israelite and a grafted-in former Gentile.
00:50But in this video I'm going to talk about how some of those prophecies are fulfilled, how Paul and others talked about Gentiles being grafted into Israel,
01:01and how that relates to keeping the Sabbath.
01:05In Romans 11.17, as part of a longer conversation on how the Gentiles relate to the Jews,
01:13Paul wrote,
01:15But if some of the branches were broken off, those of the native-born Israelites, and you, although a wild olive shoot, that is, a Gentile, were grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing root of the olive tree.
01:29The Greek word for among in that phrase grafted in among the others is en, not para.
01:36It means among, not beside.
01:40That means that believing Gentiles are grafted in among the native branches, not on a separate tree, not on a parallel track of salvation.
01:51But we are all saved the same way through faith in the blood of Yeshua.
01:56There isn't one plan of salvation for Jews and another plan for Gentiles.
02:02And there isn't one standard of behavior for Jews and another for Gentiles.
02:07Believing Gentiles are grafted into the tree of Israel.
02:12This isn't about replacing Israel.
02:15This is about joining Israel.
02:18It's always important to keep in mind that Jews don't join a church.
02:24But the natural descendants of Jacob are already part of the tree.
02:29And believing Gentiles who put their faith in Israel's Messiah are grafted in among them, not the other way around.
02:36In Galatians 3 verses 28 to 29, Paul wrote,
02:43There is neither Jew nor Greek.
02:45There is neither slave nor free.
02:47There is no male or female.
02:49For you are all one in Christ Jesus.
02:52And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise.
02:57In the salvation that Jesus has bought for us, there is no more difference between Jew and Gentile.
03:05We are all saved alike.
03:08And right now, nobody has an inheritance in the land.
03:12Even at the time Paul wrote this letter, nobody occupied the inheritance that God had assigned to them in the promised land.
03:20All of the Jews who lived in Judea and Galilee, they were sojourners too, because they didn't have a land that they could call their own.
03:29When the Assyrians and the Babylonians took the Israelites off into captivity, the line of inheritance on each plot of land was lost.
03:39Nobody today knows who belongs to what plot of land.
03:43And so whether you are a native born Jew or a grafted in Greek, we have the same rights in the promised land.
03:50Which is to say, none really.
03:54We are a lot like the Levites in this respect.
03:57Their inheritance was God.
03:59And so they didn't get an inheritance in the land.
04:02Right now, our inheritance is Christ.
04:06Through him, we are made to be Abraham's offspring, and we inherit the promises that Jesus fulfills.
04:15Abraham's covenant children are a mix of native and adopted, just like the Hebrews who came out of Egypt.
04:23Some of them were native born Israelites, but many of them were Egyptians, Ethiopians, Midianites, other people who put their faith in the God of Abraham.
04:35And they were accepted at Sinai, right alongside the native born children of Israel.
04:40Jew and Gentile believers are both made parties to the new covenant by faith in God's promises to the patriarchs.
04:48Not by physical circumcision, not by baptism, but by faith.
04:55Here's another longer passage that I'm only going to quote in part, and I'm going to put the bullet points on the next slide.
05:02In Ephesians 2, verses 11 through 22, Paul wrote,
05:06Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility.
05:28So then, you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.
05:37Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone in whom the whole structure grows into a holy temple in the Lord.
05:44In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
05:51You are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.
05:57Let me read to you from Zechariah chapter 6, verses 12 through 15.
06:02And say to him, Thus says Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh of hosts, Behold the man whose name is the branch, for he shall branch out from his place, and he shall build the temple of Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh.
06:14It is he who shall build the temple of Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh, and shall bear royal honor, and shall sit and rule on his throne.
06:22And there shall be a priest on his throne, and the council of peace shall be between them both.
06:27And the crown shall be in the temple of Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh as a reminder to Helem, Tobiah, Yad-Iah, and Hen the son of Zephaniah.
06:36And those who are far off shall come and help to build the temple of Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh, and you shall know that Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh of hosts has sent me to you.
06:46And this shall come to pass if you diligently obey the voice of Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh your God.
06:52Although the immediate context of this prophecy is about the anointing of Yehoshua as High Priest of Israel,
06:59the real object is Yeshua, Jesus Christ.
07:04He is the man whose name is the branch, who shall build the temple of Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh.
07:10There is no physical temple in Jerusalem right now, and so in a sense we are the temple of Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh.
07:17We are the temple that Jesus is building.
07:21And we are those far off who will be brought by Messiah to build that temple.
07:27In some sense, the phrase those far off in Zechariah might refer to the scattered children of the northern kingdom of Israel.
07:36But the divided kingdom is prophetic of joining former enemies under the reign of Jesus.
07:42And that includes Gentiles and Jews who used to have an enmity between them.
07:49That hostility has been destroyed, it's been taken away by Jesus.
07:55And now the native-born Israelites and the sojourners together are bricks in the house of God.
08:02That new temple can't be built without both of us.
08:06And we are all made from the same materials with the same rules.
08:11You can't have a house that follows two separate blueprints.
08:15You can't place a brick of one kind next to a brick of another kind with different properties like different stresses.
08:23Both bricks have to be able to hold the weight of everything below them.
08:28The same rules, the same standards of behavior apply to both the native-born Israelite and those who used to be strangers and aliens, but are now fellow citizens with those who had been set apart with Abraham.
08:43We are now members of the household of God, and not strangers.
08:49In Philippians 3, Paul wrote, Look out for the dogs, look out for the evildoers, look out for those who mutilate the flesh.
08:59For we are the circumcision who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus, and put no confidence in the flesh.
09:06Though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also, if anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more.
09:14Circumcised on the eighth day of the people of Israel of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews, as to the law of Pharisee.
09:23Look out for those who mutilate the flesh.
09:26These are the party of circumcision that Paul was constantly fighting with.
09:31These are people who wanted to circumcise new converts before they could be considered part of that new temple.
09:39But circumcision was never a requirement for entering the covenants of God.
09:46It was only a sign of already being part of the people.
09:51Remember that nobody was rescued from Egypt by circumcision.
09:55And most of the children of Israel in the wilderness weren't circumcised, even with God right there in the camp with them.
10:02They weren't circumcised until they crossed the Jordan River into the Promised Land.
10:07And only then did Joshua have them circumcised before they went into battle.
10:12There is no general commandment anywhere in the law to circumcise a grown man unless he's going to eat the Passover.
10:20But without a temple, without an active Levitical priesthood, without being in Jerusalem for Passover, you can't eat a Passover lamb.
10:31So there is no reason in Torah to require a grown man to be circumcised.
10:37These Jewish teachers who were going around to the Gentile converts and trying to make them be circumcised before they could be acceptable to God were adding to the law.
10:47They were telling people who were already party to the covenant that they weren't parties to the covenant.
10:53But circumcision and baptism are signs of a covenant that have already been made.
11:00Jesus' blood and our faith in that blood is the only requirement for joining it.
11:06We who worship in spirit are the true circumcision, a circumcision of the heart, and the physically circumcised and uncircumcised alike are one Israel in covenant with God.
11:19Salvation has always been by faith in the Messiah.
11:25Abraham, Moses, David, and Paul were all saved by their faith in God's salvation, which was enabled by the Messiah for everyone who lived before him and after him.
11:38The prophet Isaiah wrote, Thus says Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh, Let not the foreigner who has joined himself to Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh to minister to him, to love the name of Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh and to be his servants.
11:51Everyone who keeps the Sabbath and does not profane it and holds fast my covenant, these I will bring to my holy mountain and make them joyful in my house of prayer.
12:02Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar, for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.
12:12Everyone who keeps the Sabbath and does not profane it and holds fast my covenant, these I will bring to my holy mountain.
12:21The foreigners mentioned by Isaiah are those former Gentiles who have joined themselves to Yahweh who keep his Sabbath.
12:30They are like the mixed multitude that came out of Egypt, but they are the mixed multitude of a greater exodus of many more people coming out of the world, out of sin, to be part of God's people.
12:44Remember that the Sabbath covenant precedes both Sinai and the new covenant.
12:49And everyone who keeps the Sabbath and holds fast to my covenant, the Sabbath covenant, these I will bring to my holy mountain.
12:59These are the people who were made parties to the covenants at both Sinai and the new covenant promised in Jeremiah 31.
13:08And the defining characteristic of the Sabbath and the Sabbath covenant is faith.
13:14That first commandment that God gave Israel after they crossed the Red Sea was about whether they would have faith in him, if they would trust him to keep the Sabbath.
13:24Not if they were capable of following a list of rules, but if they had hearts to trust in God.
13:31Ultimately, faith is the defining characteristic of all of God's covenants.
13:37Abraham had faith in Yahweh, and it was counted to him as righteousness.
13:44The people of Israel had faith in God, and so he rescued them from Egypt, and he provided for them in the wilderness.
13:52We look back and have faith in the blood of Jesus, and so we are grafted into the covenants with Israel as a native-born.
14:02In part three of a Sabbath to Yahweh, we talked about who the Sabbath is for.
14:11It was given to the people of Israel and Judah, and also to the mixed multitude at Sinai.
14:17But the Sabbath applies to everyone who would join themselves to Israel's God, to worship him and become part of that new temple being built by Jesus.
