The Apostles often met on the first day of the week. Does that mean God changed the Sabbath from the seventh day to the first day?

This video is part 3ain a series on the weekly Sabbath.

Part 1: What is the Sabbath?
Part 2: Why does the Sabbath matter?
Part 3: Who is the Sabbath for?
Part 4: When is the Sabbath?

00:00this is Jay Carper and in this video we're going to talk about whether the
00:05Sabbath might have been moved to Sunday let me read from Acts chapter 20 verses
00:137 on the first day of the week when we were gathered together to break bread
00:17there are several times in the book of Acts that the disciples are recorded as
00:23meeting on the first day of the week but meeting on the first day of the week
00:28doesn't say anything about whether that day is the Sabbath they could have met
00:33on Monday or Tuesday or Wednesday and other places in Scripture said that they
00:38did meet every day of the week so this doesn't really have anything to do with
00:43the debate in fact the book of Acts also shows that the Apostles continued to go
00:49to the temple after Jesus resurrection even after Pentecost and they continued
00:55to go to the synagogue on the weekly Sabbath it was Paul's habit to go to the
01:01synagogue every Sabbath everywhere he traveled and while there he would talk
01:06to both Jews and Gentiles about Jesus in part of course he went there because
01:11that's when most people were there but the synagogues were also like community
01:16centers there were people there every day of the week but Paul didn't go to the
01:22synagogue on Sunday or Monday or Tuesday he went there on the weekly Sabbath
01:29keeping the Sabbath is the fourth commandment out of the Ten Commandments
01:33and idolatry adultery and murder none of these things are redefined in the New
01:38Covenant so why should we think the Sabbath would be any different especially
01:44when there isn't one single explicit statement anywhere in the Bible that says
01:49the Sabbath was moved from the seventh day to the first day another verse that
01:55people frequently go to to show that the Sabbath has been moved from the seventh
01:59day to the first day is revelation 110 in this verse John says I was in the
02:06spirit on the Lord's day and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet people
02:13often assume that this term the Lord's day refers to Sunday and it's true that
02:19some of the early church fathers used it that way but this is actually the only
02:25time that that phrase is used anywhere in the Bible and it's not defined John
02:30just says he was in the spirit on the Lord's day even today though many people
02:36disagree about what this phrase means some people say it refers to the weekly
02:41Sabbath some people say it refers to Sunday or possibly to the prophetic day
02:46of the Lord that great and terrible day of judgment at the end of time the phrase
02:52in Revelation 110 is kuriaki hemera in the Greek it literally means the Lord's day
03:00but there's another phrase that's used five times in the New Testament day of the
03:06Lord and in Greek it's hemera kurios it always refers to the end times and the
03:12difference between kuriaki hemera and hemera kurios is exactly the same as the
03:18difference in English between the Lord's day and the day of the Lord they
03:23essentially mean exactly the same thing from the context of Revelation 1 I don't
03:29know whether John really means the Sabbath Sunday or the great and terrible day of the Lord I
03:35think that all of those are plausible but none of them can be proved from this verse
03:40even if it refers to Sunday it doesn't say anything at all about changing the
03:47Sabbath from the seventh day to the first day people began to call Sunday the
03:53Lord's day because it's the day that Jesus resurrected from the grave essentially he
03:59resurrected on the eighth day of the week and eight in the Bible represents new
04:05beginnings and elevation from normal citizenship to priesthood or from the
04:12unclean status of a leper back to citizenship the first day of the week is
04:17significant because it's the eighth day on which the Messiah resurrected but that
04:23has nothing to do with whether it's the Sabbath or not this is Exodus 32 1 when
04:31the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain the people
04:35gathered themselves together to Aaron and said to him up make us gods who shall go
04:40before us this was less than 40 days from God speaking directly to all the
04:46people from the top of Mount Sinai in less than two months the Hebrews fell away
04:52into idolatry and this wasn't unusual this happens all throughout human history it
04:59happened again when they crossed the Jordan River into the promised land they
05:03had just spent 40 years in the wilderness in the presence of God being fed by
05:08miraculous manna and quail with a pillar of fire and smoke right there in the
05:13middle of the camp and yet the Israelites fell away in a single generation
05:18after crossing the Jordan River into the promised land and this happened again in
05:23the New Testament Paul visited the Corinthians and established a
05:28congregation there but then just a few years later he had to bring them back
05:32again because they had drifted so far from his instructions this isn't just a
05:38Jewish thing this is a human thing this is how all people behave if they are not
05:45constantly reminded of God's commandments and God's ways they start
05:49following their own ways were the church fathers in exception to normal human
05:55behavior I think we should actually be shocked if they didn't fall away very
06:01quickly after the first Apostles by the middle of the second century most
06:06Christian churches were keeping a first day Sabbath instead of the seventh day the
06:11primary motive for this was to separate themselves from the Jews they didn't
06:17want Rome to think they were one of those people so they decided to keep their
06:22Sabbath on a different day they started celebrating Passover on a different day
06:27they stopped keeping God's Commandments because they didn't want to look
06:31Jewish but this wasn't true of all believers many believers kept keeping the
06:38seventh-day Sabbath they kept keeping Passover on the same day that the Bible
06:43says to do it in fact at the very end of the fourth century the Council of
06:48Laodicea had to order people to stop Judaizing as they called it by keeping
06:54God's commanded seventh-day Sabbath they commanded the people to keep man-made
07:00traditions instead of the commandments of God exactly the opposite of what the
07:05Bible says to do Amos 3 7 says for Adonai Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh does nothing
07:14without revealing his secret to his servants the prophet remember that I
07:19pointed out way back at the beginning of this series that the Sabbath is of
07:23paramount importance to God Exodus 31 13 says you are to speak to the people of
07:31Israel and say above all you shall keep my Sabbaths for this is a sign between me
07:37and you throughout your generations that you may know that I Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh
07:42sanctify you but if the Sabbath is so important to God shouldn't there be some
07:48hint somewhere in the Bible that he was going to change it from the seventh day
07:52to the first day after Jesus resurrection but there isn't no prophet ever
07:58hinted that God would change the Sabbath day however there is one prophet that
08:04said someone else would try to change it in Daniel 7 25 it says he shall speak
08:12words against the Most High and shall wear out the Saints of the Most High and
08:16shall think to change the times and the law and they shall be given into his hand
08:21for a time times and a half time Daniel said an evil king would come to try to
08:27change God's appointed times and the law on the one hand keeping the Sabbath is of
08:34paramount importance to God and on the other hand destroying the Sabbath is of
08:40paramount importance to this Antichrist figure so which side of this equation do
08:45you want to be on Exodus 28 says remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy most
08:54Christians have no problem keeping most of the Ten Commandments they believe in
09:00keeping the commandments against idolatry murder adultery covetousness most
09:06Christians keep all nine out of the Ten Commandments or at least they try to but
09:12what about this one many Christians believe they're trying to keep the
09:16Sabbath by keeping it on Sunday instead of Saturday but nowhere in Scripture does
09:21God say that that's what we're supposed to do he said keep it on the seventh day
09:26and never said anything about the first day the Sabbath is the only one of the Ten
09:32Commandments that says remember and it's the only one of the Ten Commandments
09:37that the church tells us to forget this is Jay Carper from americantorah.com and
09:45commonsensebiblestudy.com in the next video we're going to talk about an
09:51interpretation of the Sabbath that you might not have heard of before
