The weekly Sabbath is a time set apart for God. It is a Sabbath TO God, in his honor. You can think of it as a date or as an appointment with the King.

00:00the first question we have to ask and to answer as part of this sabbath series is what is the
00:10sabbath really how can you talk about something in any meaningful way unless you know what it is
00:16so what is the sabbath first it's a time set apart for god second it's a statement of faith
00:23third it's a day of rest mercy and healing so let's look at that first definition a time set apart
00:32for god the seventh day is a sabbath to the lord your god exodus 2010 and this is also in exodus 16
00:41leviticus 23 and deuteronomy 5 just to name a few one thing to note whenever you see lord in the bible
00:50in all capital letters that means that the actual hebrew word is yod hey vav hey or yahweh now
00:57there's a lot of controversy about how that name is supposed to be pronounced so most of the time
01:02i'm just going to spell it out yod hey vav hey if i need to say anything about it at all
01:09i tend to go with yahweh because that's the scholarly consensus now i know that there is some
01:15disagreement yehovah yahuwah lots of variations but i'm not a hebrew scholar so i kind of have to
01:25defer to those people who are they know a lot more than i do the first thing that we can get out of
01:30this verse is that this is a sabbath to god but what does that mean in genesis 8 20 someone builds
01:40an altar to yahweh well what does it mean to build an altar to him it means as an act of worship to him
01:48now we're not giving him the altar the altar isn't for god's benefit it's for ours but it's something
01:54done in his honor it's kind of like a parade to veterans or a toast to a newlywed couple this is a date
02:04with god this is a time that god has set apart for us to spend with him a day to spend worshiping
02:12studying contemplating simply resting in his honor or in his name as an act of worship god created the
02:22sabbath on the seventh day of creation one thing that this tells us is that there are six days that
02:29god gave to adam to spend working in the garden and then one day in the garden to spend with god
02:37now when adam was there in the garden god spent that time with him he walked with adam in the
02:41evening in the garden but those were working days the seventh day is a day for god's purposes
02:50adam is still in the garden but he's spending that time with god rather than just being in god's company
02:56he is taking some time specifically to give all of his attention to god remember that god created man
03:04on the sixth day one of the most important things we can learn from that is that god didn't want adam
03:11just sitting around all week while he finished creation as soon as he created man god's favorite
03:18creature he immediately stopped and spent a whole day with him the sabbath is a time set apart for god
03:26like a date like a summons to a king if a king summoned you to his court on wednesday would you show up on
03:34tuesday or thursday or would you send a note back to the king saying you know i'll let you know what
03:39day works better for me no the purpose of the audience might be to help you so that you get to
03:46tell the king what you need but the king tells you what day you show up someone doesn't set a date with
03:52you and then expect you to show up on some other day or whenever it feels good to you we keep the
03:58sabbath for our benefit but we keep it in god's honor according to his standards and his timetable
04:07now let's look at this passage from isaiah 58 on the same topic if you turn back your foot from the
04:12sabbath from doing your pleasure on my holy day and call the sabbath a delight the holy day of yahweh
04:18honorable if you honor it not going your own ways or seeking your own pleasure or talking idly
04:25then you shall take delight in yodhe vavhe and i will make you ride on the heights of the earth
04:30i will feed you with the heritage of jacob your father for the mouth of yodhe vavhe has spoken
04:39this first part if you keep from doing your pleasure on my holy day god isn't forbidding fun on
04:45the sabbath that's not what this is about what this is really about is god's priorities not yours
04:52the focus changes from you to god you have all all week long to do the things that are solely for your
05:02purposes to make a living or to get your chores done or to worry about the things of the world in
05:08your own relationships this day is for god's priorities it's a day for building your relationship
05:15with god and also your neighbors because it's a community day but primarily it's about taking
05:21time with god and remember that this day belongs to god it doesn't belong to us even though it's for
05:28our benefit god wants us to refrain from doing the things that we want to do in order to do the things
05:35that he wants us to do and he wants us to take delight in this day with him it's not supposed to be a
05:42drudgery if keeping the sabbath becomes a burden then something's wrong with the way you're keeping
05:48it because it's supposed to be a delight specifically it's supposed to be a day of taking delight
05:56in god yodhe vavhe this can be a challenge if your spirit isn't in alignment with god's if you haven't
06:05learned to love the things that he loves and to hate the things that he hates it's going to be a
06:10challenge taking delight in his presence but that's one of the reasons that we do it so we can spend
06:16time with him to learn the things that he loves to learn the things that he hates and to make those our
06:22own to love what god loves to hate what god hates just to reiterate the sabbath isn't a day just for us
06:32it's not ours to choose what day of the week or how to do it it's a time set apart for god he set
06:40apart this day for our benefit so that we can rest so that we can refresh and recharge from a hard week
06:48but he did it so that we would take that time in his honor to spend a day with him this is a time set
06:56apart for god
