I'm Stuart Wood and I'm the musician-in-residence at the Huntington and
00:04
Langham estate which is a care home for people living with dementia and also
00:09
people who are in later life or living with long-term conditions and we've had
00:15
here donated some instruments from percussion play who are makers of these
00:22
large sculptural musical instruments. This one is called a Liberty Bell and it has
00:30
three sets of bells each with four notes and I'll play these ones so you can hear
00:38
what they sound like
00:43
and this one is tuned the same but at a different tone so these are part of a
00:51
research residency which is asking a big question about what happens when we
01:00
play percussion instruments like these outdoors. We know quite a lot about the
01:06
benefits of playing musical instruments and playing percussion and we're
01:10
starting to know quite a lot about what it's like being outdoors in care and in
01:14
community settings but we've never really brought those questions together so over
01:19
the weekend we've been bringing residents and families and staff out to these
01:27
instruments which are dotted around here and by the lake and also public parts of
01:32
the home and we've just been exploring what it's like to play them, get together, try
01:38
to play tunes or try to just have fun and we've been learning about how these
01:44
instruments evoke and make possible different types of communication,
01:51
interaction and expression and we've really learned that they open up many
01:57
different possibilities and they create a lot of pleasure so we're looking forward
02:02
to as I leave and I'm not the musician in residence anymore how they're going to be
02:09
able to keep this kind of experience going and there's many musical people who live
02:15
here and work here and who visit here and so we're looking forward to seeing how
02:20
that gets along in future and how musical they continue being with these lovely
02:25
instruments out here.
