As the RSPCA highlights a rise in cruelty cases, we ask people in Birmingham how important their pets are to them - or, if they don’t have pets, what they believe responsible ownership should involve.

00:00Yeah, so I have a dog and they're called Luna, she's a sprudel.

00:05And I'd say with dogs, I've got a special bond with her because I know she's obviously alive as well.

00:11And it's, I don't know, you kind of just know she's there.

00:15It's kind of like a child, for example, you don't know a bond until you have one.

00:18We don't have pets. My sister has a dog.

00:20And I feel like MSU got him during COVID.

00:22And if he was to die, I think he would just shatter our entire world,

00:25even though it was only four years ago.

00:27It's really sad to think that people aren't treating them with care because they are part of the family.

00:31They adopt your mannerisms as well.

00:33Yeah, I've got a cat. I love my cat.

00:36And over the last few years, I've had some mental health struggles

00:40and it's really helped to have just an animal in the house.

00:43Well, bring back the dog license for a start.

00:46I mean, they could use that money to fund the RSPCA.

00:50It stops people buying pit bulls and staffies just as a substitute for something else.
