00:00I keep saying sorry, sorry.

00:02That's what I can do.

00:04Because I don't want anything to happen to the dogs also.

00:18Meet 62-year-old Jenny Kong.

00:21She begins her day at 7.30am at her dog shelter

00:25tucked down a dirt road in Pandamarang, Klang.

00:28With the help of two live-in workers,

00:31Kong begins a thorough cleaning of the shelter

00:34after the dogs are let out to roam free.

00:37By 2pm, it's time to feed them.

00:41There are about 80 dogs in this shelter.

00:44On the street, on the street.

00:47Those that people abandoned, those that got hit by car.

00:51Old dogs, I don't know why,

00:54some dogs they are old already, you know, they cannot walk or what.

00:58Then they would just, you know, dump them on the street

01:01so they can't survive.

01:03So that's when I go and rescue, rescue these dogs

01:07and I keep them in my shelter.

01:11Kong began rescuing strays 25 years ago

01:14when her son brought home a scruffy pup.

01:17One rescue turned into many more.

01:20Soon, her home was overrun by dogs.

01:25Already known in Klang for feeding strays,

01:28Kong's devotion grew.

01:30But so did the criticism.

01:32I would go out and feed dogs around midnight.

01:38Because if I go out early,

01:40people were waiting for me,

01:42scolded me.

01:43Why you come here and feed dogs?

01:45Because you come here and feed dogs,

01:46there are more and more dogs there.

01:49So, no choice.

01:51I still have to say sorry to them.

01:53Because I don't want anything to happen to the dogs also.

01:57She opened a small shelter in 2014,

02:02but as the number of dogs grew,

02:04so did the need to open a bigger shelter.

02:07With the help of a benefactor,

02:09Kong opened a new shelter in 2023

02:12complete with secure enclosures

02:14and crates for tougher cases.

02:17One of Kong's most memorable rescues is Tony,

02:20a cancer-stricken dog

02:22whose owners wanted him put down.

02:25Kong took him in and nursed him back to help.

02:29But when she offered to return him,

02:31they didn't want him back.

02:33Because he already took in another puppy.

02:36So this one makes me really sad now, you know.

02:40Because from small, he must be the owner.

02:44Tony is now one of the beloved old-timers at the shelter.

02:48But caring for dogs like Tony

02:50and running the shelter costs over RM7,000 a month

02:54and this does not include vet visits,

02:56each one easily costing RM1,000 or more.

03:00Despite this, Kong keeps going.

03:04I pity the dogs.

03:06I cannot just let them go out like that.

03:09I cannot.

03:10And some of the dogs that people dump also,

03:12you know, very pitiful, you know,

03:14when you look at them.

03:15Their condition is very, very pitiful.

03:17The government should do something about it.

03:23This is the only solution.

03:25I think so.

03:26Because, I mean, we as rescuers,

03:30we can't do much.

03:32I think they should have a law,

03:34like those who, you know, die,

03:37you know, abandon their dogs on the street.

03:40And then, we should find them.

03:45For now, Kong is content with being the guardian

03:48of Klang's unwanted dogs,

03:50holding on to the hope that more kind-hearted Malaysians

03:53will chip in to help keep the shelter running.

03:56I really need people, you know, to come forward,

03:59you know, help me.

04:01I mean, like donations, you know,

04:04for their medical, their food, my helper.

04:08Because I depend on donations, you know.
