I keep saying sorry, sorry.
00:02
That's what I can do.
00:04
Because I don't want anything to happen to the dogs also.
00:18
Meet 62-year-old Jenny Kong.
00:21
She begins her day at 7.30am at her dog shelter
00:25
tucked down a dirt road in Pandamarang, Klang.
00:28
With the help of two live-in workers,
00:31
Kong begins a thorough cleaning of the shelter
00:34
after the dogs are let out to roam free.
00:37
By 2pm, it's time to feed them.
00:41
There are about 80 dogs in this shelter.
00:44
On the street, on the street.
00:47
Those that people abandoned, those that got hit by car.
00:51
Old dogs, I don't know why,
00:54
some dogs they are old already, you know, they cannot walk or what.
00:58
Then they would just, you know, dump them on the street
01:01
so they can't survive.
01:03
So that's when I go and rescue, rescue these dogs
01:07
and I keep them in my shelter.
01:11
Kong began rescuing strays 25 years ago
01:14
when her son brought home a scruffy pup.
01:17
One rescue turned into many more.
01:20
Soon, her home was overrun by dogs.
01:25
Already known in Klang for feeding strays,
01:28
Kong's devotion grew.
01:30
But so did the criticism.
01:32
I would go out and feed dogs around midnight.
01:38
Because if I go out early,
01:40
people were waiting for me,
01:42
scolded me.
01:43
Why you come here and feed dogs?
01:45
Because you come here and feed dogs,
01:46
there are more and more dogs there.
01:49
So, no choice.
01:51
I still have to say sorry to them.
01:53
Because I don't want anything to happen to the dogs also.
01:57
She opened a small shelter in 2014,
02:02
but as the number of dogs grew,
02:04
so did the need to open a bigger shelter.
02:07
With the help of a benefactor,
02:09
Kong opened a new shelter in 2023
02:12
complete with secure enclosures
02:14
and crates for tougher cases.
02:17
One of Kong's most memorable rescues is Tony,
02:20
a cancer-stricken dog
02:22
whose owners wanted him put down.
02:25
Kong took him in and nursed him back to help.
02:29
But when she offered to return him,
02:31
they didn't want him back.
02:33
Because he already took in another puppy.
02:36
So this one makes me really sad now, you know.
02:40
Because from small, he must be the owner.
02:44
Tony is now one of the beloved old-timers at the shelter.
02:48
But caring for dogs like Tony
02:50
and running the shelter costs over RM7,000 a month
02:54
and this does not include vet visits,
02:56
each one easily costing RM1,000 or more.
03:00
Despite this, Kong keeps going.
03:04
I pity the dogs.
03:06
I cannot just let them go out like that.
03:09
I cannot.
03:10
And some of the dogs that people dump also,
03:12
you know, very pitiful, you know,
03:14
when you look at them.
03:15
Their condition is very, very pitiful.
03:17
The government should do something about it.
03:19
The government should do something about it.
03:21
The government should do something about it.
03:23
This is the only solution.
03:25
I think so.
03:26
Because, I mean, we as rescuers,
03:30
we can't do much.
03:32
I think they should have a law,
03:34
like those who, you know, die,
03:37
you know, abandon their dogs on the street.
03:40
And then, we should find them.
03:45
For now, Kong is content with being the guardian
03:48
of Klang's unwanted dogs,
03:50
holding on to the hope that more kind-hearted Malaysians
03:53
will chip in to help keep the shelter running.
03:56
I really need people, you know, to come forward,
03:59
you know, help me.
04:01
I mean, like donations, you know,
04:04
for their medical, their food, my helper.
04:08
Because I depend on donations, you know.
04:12
If you can donate towards this furry haven of hope,
04:15
contact Jenny's son, Lester,
04:17
at 017-669-5142.
04:21
