00:00Four animal activists have sued the Turanganu State Government and the Basut District Council
00:06over the alleged unlawful killing of a stray dog named Kopi two months ago.
00:11Plaintiffs Dr. Kartini Farah Abdul Rahim, S. Mukunan, Hong He San, and S. Shashi Kumar
00:17filed the writ action through their solicitors Rajan Sach last week.
00:21Based on court filings, the plaintiffs said the killing of Kopi by a council enforcement
00:25officer violated Sections 29E and 301 of the Animal Welfare Act 2015.
00:33They are seeking a declaration that the shooting of animals is prohibited by law unless it
00:37falls within the exceptions listed in Section 302 of the Act, including that the killing
00:42is authorized by a veterinary authority and is necessary to prevent an imminent danger
00:46to human life.
00:48In March this year, a video of Kopi playing with a stray cat went viral on social media.
00:53Kopi was later shot dead by the authorities in Basut Turanganu during a stray culling
00:58operation.
01:00Following Kopi's death, around 100 people, including representatives from various animal
01:04rights groups, gathered at the Sentul Police Station to file a report and demand justice
01:09for Kopi.
