Police say that officers were first alerted to this incident following reports that a
00:08
man had discharged a firearm just before three o'clock yesterday afternoon at Menzies Drive
00:14
in the tiny central Goldfields town of Daisy Hill, which is about 100 kilometres from Melbourne
00:21
CBD and it is northwest of Ballarat, as you've mentioned.
00:25
Now officers tried to negotiate with this man, but it became apparent that a siege situation
00:31
was quickly unfolding and so they called in additional assistance from the special operations
00:39
group as well as the critical incident response team and also the dog squad and this standoff
00:46
lasted for several hours until just before 10 o'clock when police say that this man fired
00:53
shots at officers and police then returned fire and this man was shot dead.
00:59
They say that he died at the scene, he's yet to be formally identified and they say that
01:06
nobody else was hurt in this incident.
01:10
Homicide squad detectives will now investigate this case with oversight from Professional
01:15
Standards Command, which is the usual protocol for fatal police shootings.
01:20
Police say that any witnesses or anybody who has any information about this case should
01:26
contact them.
