Two people dead in Melbourne after Rye shooting, police believe man fled the scene

Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a man and a woman at Rye on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula. Detectives believe another man fled the scene.

00:00Police believe that the shooter, suspected to have been involved in what they think is

00:05a double homicide, is still at large.

00:08This incident unfolded in riot in a dress behind me at about four o'clock, where police

00:12believe that an altercation broke out between a group of people.

00:16By the time that emergency services attended, they found a man and a woman with gunshot

00:20wounds.

00:21Despite their efforts, they couldn't be revived.

00:23Police also believe that a man may have fled the scene, and that's probably the person

00:27that they're looking for now.

00:29Aside from that, we don't have many other details.

00:31One neighbour spoke to media and said that she happened to be up at about that time and

00:35heard two loud bangs about 40 seconds apart, but didn't think much of it until she read

00:39some of the reports in the news this morning.

00:42As you can see, there's still a crime scene in place behind me.

00:45Detectives have spent the morning combing through the area.

00:48They're currently going door to door, hoping to speak with neighbours and witnesses.

00:52But one difficulty that they're having is that this is a bit of a summer holiday destination

00:55with lots of Airbnbs and holiday homes.

00:58And at this time of year on a Monday morning, not too many of those people are home.

01:01So that investigation is underway.

01:03We haven't heard of any threat to public safety.

01:05I'm sure that police would let us know if there was a significant risk or anything along

01:08those lines.

01:09But their investigation is continuing, and was.

01:11We're hoping to hear from police a little bit later today.
