Uber, Waymo Launch Public Robotaxi Rides in Atlanta Using Driverless Electric SUVs

Uber and Alphabet’s Waymo have launched public robotaxi rides in Atlanta, expanding their partnership. The service covers about 65 square miles, excluding highways and the airport, and uses Waymo’s driverless Jaguar I-PACE electric SUVs. Waymo rides in Atlanta are available only via the Uber app. This move follows a March launch in Austin, where Tesla debuted a limited pilot robotaxi service using Model Y SUVs with human safety riders this week. In contrast, Waymo vehicles operate without any human supervisors and rely on advanced lidar and radar systems, unlike Tesla’s cameras-only approach. While Tesla works to catch up, Waymo continues its lead in driverless tech, also facing competition from Chinese firms like Baidu and WeRide.
