Safety tips for dangerous heat

Out of any weather falalities, heat-related has the highest numbers in the United States. Here are tips when you are overheating.

00:00When you think of dangerous, even deadly weather, what comes to mind? Is it tornadoes, hurricane, lightning?

00:06How about heat? When we look at the 30-year historical average, this data from 1995 up to 2024,

00:13look at the bar that is the highest. On average, 238 people die a year from heat-related problems here,

00:21flooding the next highest there at 113.

00:24You can break down the data even more. There's a lot of interesting information that comes from this graphic.

00:29Of the nine states that reported deaths from heat in 2024, these were the states that had the highest fatalities, right?

00:37I don't think Arizona, Nevada, California shock anyone, but how about Oregon and Washington,

00:43where we had deaths last year because of heat?

00:47You can see the categories, too, whether that's mobile homes, permanent homes, people being outside,

00:51and, of course, vehicles, a lot of fall into an other category as well.

00:55But it's the time of year to really pay close attention to your own body and those around you as well.

01:00So when we talk about impacts from heat illnesses, what to do in the case of overheating,

01:06you want to remove or loosen tight clothing.

01:08You can place ice packs under your armpits.

01:11You can mist the body with water and continue to hydrate.

01:14And in these situations, you want to avoid caffeine, alcohol, and sugar.

01:18So some important reminders this time of year.

01:20How about our friends, too, our furry friends?

01:22I did see a lot of people, you know, out taking their dogs and walks during the hottest part of the day.

01:27And that can be a really dangerous situation for them as well,

01:30especially if you're trying to walk them on the pavement versus the grass.
