widespread heat today across the plains and all the way down into the central
00:04
Gulf Coast states. But the core of the heat relative to normal is in the
00:08
north-central United States today. Look at all these temperatures up over 100
00:12
degrees or close to it from Chicago Indianapolis all the way down in the
00:16
word Kansas City. Here comes the relief a front coming we'll talk about that
00:20
more in a second but this temperatures today it's a hot day and this is the
00:24
hottest day Chicago has seen in almost 11 years. When is the last time we had a
00:29
high temperature of at least 100 degrees in Chicago? I was a little surprised when
00:34
I looked at this. It's been 11 years the last time we were 103 or over 100
00:40
degrees was July 6 2012 so it's been over 11 years since we've been this hot
00:45
so this is not only the hottest day of the year yesterday was the hottest day
00:49
of the year when it was 98 degrees in Chicago that broke the record of 97 set
00:53
in 1947 but not only is this the hottest day of the year it's the hottest day
00:57
that we've had in 11 years in Chicago. It is hot. Records are going to be
01:02
challenging broken across Iowa, Missouri, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky today lots of
01:08
records challenged today as temperatures continue to rise and then you look at
01:12
your AccuWeather real field temperatures and we're zoning in on that red area
01:15
from the boot hill of Missouri toward Memphis all the way toward Shreveport
01:19
Louisiana where we're going to see an AccuWeather real field temperature
01:22
between 115 and 120 degrees. The other story with this and you forget about
01:28
this but what is just as crucial in a heatwave is the temperatures at night.
01:34
Certainly it's hot during the day but you know what if you can cool things
01:37
down into the 60s there's some relief for people that do not have air
01:41
conditioning but there's not going to be much relief even in Chicago you're in
01:44
the 70s tonight cooler than what you were last night but that's not going to
01:48
help much. Meanwhile look at st. Louis toward Kansas City along Interstate 7
01:52
temperatures tonight mostly in the 80s so no relief there but there is relief
01:58
coming because there's our upper level high now across eastern Oklahoma. What
02:03
we were talking about this yesterday is this moves to the south our wind flow
02:06
instead of coming in from the west southwest starts coming in from the
02:09
north northwest and that will bring a cold front southward. Watch where this
02:12
upper high is going to go as we continue to move through the period. It moves a
02:16
little farther east as we go through Friday. See here's the dip in the jet
02:19
stream now wind flow coming in from the north our front comes south here comes a
02:24
relief. Then that high kind of meanders around Friday and Saturday and then it
02:29
pushes to the south and east over the weekend and that will allow finally some
02:34
relief into the southern plains in Texas Sunday in the southern plains early next
02:40
week in the Texas. They'll be dancing in the streets in Chicago by the time we
02:45
get into Saturday we're going to be in the 70s what a refreshing air mass. Same
02:48
story in Minneapolis Detroit you're going to cool down Cincinnati you're
02:52
going to cool down even Kansas City you're going to go from a 103 degrees
02:55
on Friday to 85 degrees on Sunday with some thunderstorms. Also all of this dry
03:02
weather boy all of this heat continues to allow this drought to expand across
03:07
all of the central United States that's not good so we're going to continue to
03:12
watch that but the heat will be coming to an end. Stay with us.
