00:00So we're away with Switzerland in the red, Colombia in the yellow shirts.
00:12And there are some encouraging words from Colombian players who still believe that they could play a role in the World Cup beyond this evening.
00:21Valderrama.
00:28Herrera, that's it back. Valderrama again.
00:34And Herrera out onto the left side where Perez is waiting.
00:41Switzerland, one of the smallest countries in the World Cup, just approaching 7 million, compared to the 33 million of Colombia.
00:50They take their football very seriously there. Defeat has not gone down well.
00:57The overlap is on the left, but he's gone into an offside position.
01:00In some countries, if you fail in major tournaments, you get depicted as turnips in newspapers.
01:07In Colombia, you're fighting for your life.
01:10And Gomez, one of the players expected to be a focal point to this Colombian team, was not even considered for this game following death threats.
01:20Threats which were taken very seriously indeed.
01:26A little bit of encouragement now. Colombia beginning to play a bit. Haven't done too much of that.
01:32Liked a bit of penetration. O'Rell, a long ball forward.
01:36Asking an awful lot to keep that one in play.
01:39Lovely day in San Francisco.
01:43The Stanford Stadium.
01:47Does add a bit of spice to the game though.
01:51That's Brilla.
01:54Going at himself. This is what we want to see. A bit of adventure from him.
01:58Might even get the shot in. Too many men there. Rincon.
02:05And still a shot over the bar. Pascolo not forced to make a save.
02:10Well, Valencia is really a handful.
02:23He's already shown his goal scoring touch already.
02:26As the ball broke to him there. Flashing the shot, but couldn't keep it down.
02:29They finished against Romania. Their confidence must be at an all-time high.
02:36And they've got some defending to do now.
02:39Good flick on. Now, Esprilla.
02:46Shot actually came in from Rincon.
02:48Good save by Pascolo.
02:51And Pascolo doing well.
02:54With Esprilla bursting through.
02:57And he just made it off very quickly into the path of Rincon.
03:01Good save by Pascolo.
03:03Alderama takes it.
03:05Floated dangerously in.
03:07Still not away.
03:09Good shot coming in.
03:10Great save by Pascolo.
03:12Herrera must have thought that he was going to score the first goal.
03:25As Pascolo made a brilliant save.
03:28So another corner for Colombia which Valderama will take.
03:34A couple of times already.
03:36The Swiss have had real problems with these corners.
03:38Pascolo comes out again.
03:40And again he doesn't claim it.
03:42And the ball didn't quite fall for Escobar.
03:47Pascolo has got to really make up his mind whether he's going to come for these corners and claim them.
03:52Or just wait on his line and let his defenders
03:55clear the danger for him.
03:57But he was caught in no man's land here yet again.
04:00And if Escobar could have got the shot in without the intentions of Quentin
04:05then Switzerland would have been a goal down.
04:07But from open play very difficult to break down.
04:10And many teams have found that especially during the qualifying period.
04:15They conceded two goals against Italy but they still came away with a draw in that game.
04:20And they're under pressure again.
04:21Asprilla gets it across to Valderama.
04:25It's through again but a great save by Pascolo.
04:31Still not away.
04:32Valderama!
04:34Was that the use of an arm?
04:36Valderama is claiming the penalty and I think he's got every justification.
04:39Alvarez and Esprilla surrounding the goalkeeper.
04:46Rather the referee.
04:48But the goalkeeper was out of position.
04:51And look what happens here.
04:56Goalkeeper out of position and there was certainly a touch by Geiger.
04:59Goalkeeper out of position and there was a hand there.
05:00A hand there.
05:01Stupidly by Knut.
05:02That was absurd.
05:03Knowing how the referees were clamped down and that sort of thing.
05:05Yeah!
05:06Atlant.
05:07He's got a push.
05:10What I'm saying.
05:12There is no way to lose…
05:14Caled in by Braege.
05:15And there was a hand there.
05:17Stupidly by Knut.
05:21That was absurd.
05:22Knowing how the referees were clamped down and that sort of thing.
05:30Yeah!
05:31On this day of TV evidence, very unwise to do it.
05:41Valderrama, the ball in, the goal scored by Colombia.
05:48Deverea, just before half-time, used Colombia some hope.
06:01His first goal for his country, in nine internationals.
06:11And for once, the Swiss defence were hopelessly astray.
06:20Haskolo believing that one of his players had been fouled.
06:27But he should have stopped it anyway, there's no excuse for that.
06:31He could get two hands to that, basically, but he stopped.
06:38And Switzerland paid the price.
06:42He should always play to the whistle, Pascolo didn't.
06:45And Colombia take the lead because of it.
06:53They're the last summing to cheer for the Colombians.
07:01Although we've seen some rather unattractive aspects to their play in the last five minutes or so.
07:09And just signs that this game could boil over.
07:16Playing injury time.
07:24But I did say that a goal just before half-time has set things up for the second half.
07:28They'll know they've got an uphill battle.
07:36They knew that as soon as they lost to the United States of America.
07:41But they've got to go out with more goals.
07:47Not only for their self-esteem, but to give themselves any available chance of progressing.
07:51So, booze all around this ground.
08:04Following a rather tempestuous ending to the game.
08:07The only goal, though, from Gaviria a minute before half-time.
08:16Controversy surrounding the goal as to whether one of the Swiss players was fouled off the ball.
08:24But either way, Colombia go in at half-time, leading by a goal to nil.
08:29The position in the next round will be guaranteed.
08:43Still not away.
08:45Bregui.
08:46Inside to Herr.
08:48Just over the bar.
08:52But Dominic Herr is so good in the air.
08:59And when the ball came in,
09:03he just tried to throw the ball into the top corner.
09:06D'Avila falling over himself twice.
09:13Alderana again.
09:17That's Brutus' first touch, let him down a bit there.
09:19But he takes it on now.
09:20Can he get the shot in?
09:22He can.
09:23Saved comfortably by Pascolo.
09:26Might have feared the worst as he saw Asprilla surging into the area.
09:32Foul to Arminau.
09:34D'Avila.
09:35Goes for the shot himself.
09:37An easier one for Pascolo to deal with.
09:38He's done everything competently.
09:41Except when he let him the goal just before half-time.
09:46He was too busy worrying about a potential foul to one of his colleagues.
09:50Just taking his time.
10:01Switzerland entering the last minute of the game.
10:04And that's a beautiful opportunity.
10:07Chapoussa over the bar.
10:09Well, that was their best chance of the game.
10:15And you can see what he feels about it.
10:22Well, nine times out of ten,
10:24you would back Stefan Chapoussa
10:26to score from that situation.
10:29That's a good ball inside.
10:41Lozano.
10:42Can he get the shot in?
10:43He can!
10:44A second goal for Colombia.
10:49They scored at the end of the first half.
10:52And the substitute, Lozano,
10:54has scored at the end of the second.
10:56Well, a 2-0 scoreline
11:08means that Colombia
11:11are assured of the three points
11:14and will have a minus one goal difference.
11:18What they're hoping for now
11:23is that the USA can beat Romania
11:26for them to sneak into third place
11:31and then
11:34they'd be looking
11:36for other groups to work in their favour as well.
11:40Well, still the feeling is
12:10that Colombia
12:10knew that two goals
12:13probably wasn't enough.
12:16In all probability
12:17they'll bow out of the
12:19World Cup finals.
12:25They've hinted on occasions
12:27at the skills
12:28which
12:28we all hoped
12:30would delight the world.
12:32But instead of taking the tournament
12:34by storm,
12:34they were sadly
12:38out of sorts
12:41when they played
12:42their opening two games
12:44especially
12:44the second game
12:46against the USA
12:47which everyone had predicted
12:48they'd win.
12:50And although
12:50they've recovered
12:51some of their self-esteem here
12:52even if they'd progressed
12:57it's unlikely
12:57that they would have
13:01advanced too far.
13:03We've seen some better teams
13:04in the Colombian side.
13:05For Switzerland though
13:06they went
13:06and entered the game
13:07knowing
13:08that all they were really fighting for
13:11was which position
13:12they'd end up
13:12and where they'd end up
13:15playing in the next round
13:16of the competition.
13:17Valderrama
13:18ends the game
13:20on the field
13:21but certainly
13:22with the fans
13:23unhappy
13:24with his
13:26part in the game.
13:27Final score
13:28two goals to nil
13:29to Colombia.
13:29So a victory for Colombia
13:49one which
13:52gets back a little bit
13:53of self-respect
13:54for them.
13:56The goals
13:56supplied
13:57from the stroke
13:58of half-time
13:59by Gaviria
14:00a second one
14:02supplied
14:02and the stroke
14:04of full-time
14:05by the substitute
14:06Lozano
14:06in between
14:09fleeting glimpses
14:10of the skills
14:10of the Colombians
14:11but a victory
14:13which was somewhat
14:15shallow
14:16by their earlier
14:17performances
14:18in the competition.
14:20Switzerland
14:20a defeat
14:23for them
14:23but still
14:25the knowledge
14:25that they've got
14:26a part to play
14:27in this World Cup.
14:28we leave you
14:32with the second goal
14:35from Lozano
14:36with the final score
14:38Colombia two
14:40Switzerland
14:40nil.
