00:47Sing with passion, sing with me, and strong, blessed, and close.
01:00The first touch by an England team in serious competition for two and a half years.
01:06Good evening.
01:07Euro 96 got underway with England against Switzerland at Wembley this afternoon.
01:11Before it, we had the Red Devils.
01:19We saw the Red Arrows.
01:28We heard from Simply Red, and then it was England desperate to avoid red faces against the red
01:39shirts of Switzerland.
01:45The fans were looking for a great start from the hosts.
01:52Platt was left out of the starting eleven.
01:57Southgate was in.
02:01Gascoyne's form would be crucial.
02:04On our bench tonight, Messrs Hullit, Hansen, and Gil.
02:08And we'll be reporting on the Germans who play tomorrow, and some of the other fancied countries.
02:13So, to the first match.
02:14England against Switzerland in Group A.
02:16Wembley packed to the rafters.
02:17The atmosphere electric.
02:19The commentary from Trevor Brookings and Barry Davis.
02:22It's the people's game, and what a difference it makes to have a packed Wembley stadium.
02:36The long wait is over.
02:40This is for real.
02:46So, there the Swiss line-up, their manager, Artur Grosje, having left up both Knup and Aaron Suter, can find no starting place for Stéphane Chapuisat, and recalls Christophe Bonvin, who last played for the side-back in October.
03:02Well, our goalkeeper, Pascolo, experienced goalkeeper with Servette, I think will have to play well if Switzerland are going to get any sort of result.
03:10Number 13, Jean Array, only his second cap, young player, I'd like to see McManaman get at him.
03:15And, of course, number 10, Svjordza, arguably their best player, their creative playmaker, and had a good season for Bayern Munich.
03:22The England team, known to the players since Wednesday, and the side that Terry Venables has put out includes six of those who served him in his first match against Denmark, two years and three months ago.
03:40We'll have to see if Gareth Southgate pushes into midfield, as we suspect quite often, but the two pools, I think, in St. Gascoigne, absolutely key players, and hopefully McManaman and Anderton out wide will give the sort of service that Alan Shearer will thrive on and quickly get off the mark during this tournament.
03:57The referee, Manuel Diaz Vega, our Spain, and the linesman from the same country.
04:11A new generation think that it's all about to begin, and it is now.
04:16For the record, only four of the England squad were born, when Bobby Moore, Sir Ralph Ramsey and company, had that great day 30 years ago.
04:30The first run in 1996, for Steve McManaman, cut out by Alan Geiger.
04:37Playing on the ground where he made his debut 16 years ago, Geiger.
04:43Fogel, who couldn't keep it in.
04:46Comes down, and that's a good save from Anderton.
04:55Got over the top of it, and hit it well, but it bounced up quite nicely for the goalkeeper.
05:01Yeah, it's a good long throw, and because England will always be dangerous, just bounced up a bit high, not easy to keep it down, and knocked it into the ground there in Anderton.
05:08Here's Jean Leray.
05:09Here's Jean Leray.
05:11Here's Jean Leray.
05:12Here's Jean Leray.
05:14That's confident.
05:15It's only a second cap.
05:17He's an expert in keeping watches.
05:19Here's Turkle-Matz.
05:21Still with the chance, and away by Gareth Southgate.
05:24The timing then for a moment didn't look too good for England as Jean LaRey set up the opportunity.
05:34Turkelmatz and Shreds.
05:38And it took Gareth Southgate to get in.
05:45Geiger into Sforza.
05:50Adams and Turkelmatz, it's going to be a good physical contest.
05:54Comptown got it back, and they've got him behind again, and again it's Turkelmatz, and this is really quite worrying.
06:00And again it was Gareth Southgate.
06:04For all his lack of experience at this level, he's taken the international football like a duck to water.
06:12Mind you, Turkelmatz again getting behind England defence, and that was good defended by Southgate in the end,
06:18but you don't want too many situations like that where you're short at the back.
06:25Bombay is up on the line, Turkelmatz in the six-yard area.
06:29That's okay.
06:35He's a very lively character, is Kubelé Turkelmatz.
06:39Manchester United now to their cost.
06:40He's playing for Galatasaray in a couple of European Cup matches.
06:52He's been the most dangerous forward on view at the moment, certainly caused England one or two hiccups that they wouldn't have anticipated.
07:01Sheldon's from behind, Byron Shaw.
07:11There's a line of four, and McManaman just behind them.
07:16Pearce!
07:17Thunder is shot, but not the accuracy.
07:25Bad ball, he seemed to say there.
07:27Well, he said they tried to stretch him a little bit, but still good at shooting opportunities, Stuart Pearce.
07:32Didn't quite get over it.
07:33But they did say that England would produce one or two more inventive ideas from set pieces.
07:38That, again, gave Pearce a shooting opportunity, but yet to quite get it on target.
07:45Clearance by Conte.
07:47Pearce did enough to get the challenge.
07:49The referee plays a good advantage for the Swiss.
07:52This is Turkelmatz.
07:54Bombard coming to the top of the area as the ball goes out for the corner of Southgate.
08:10Game from Swartzer.
08:12Just didn't keep it down, but he certainly hit it, truly.
08:15Absolutely on the instep.
08:19Really good strike, and it was a good attempt to keep it down.
08:25Ince.
08:30Neville.
08:35Came off the head of Shearer.
08:41England's right.
08:50Hanneman.
08:52Pearce.
08:54Three in the area for the diagonal ball.
08:55He may go for the shots.
08:57Goals to Neville.
08:59Oh, he hit that well.
09:04First real stretch on goal.
09:09Comes from 21-year-old Gary Neville.
09:12And he really hit it well.
09:14It's a save that Pascalo would have expected to make, having cleared the ball initially.
09:19But even so, it was a good strike.
09:23He was all in line with the flight of the ball, the goalkeeper.
09:26Out by Geiger.
09:29Disappointing corner from Darren Anderton.
09:31Yes, good.
09:32Shearer.
09:33Ince.
09:34Anderton right side.
09:35McManaman left side.
09:36Shearer clear.
09:37Score!
09:39Score!
09:41Yes, good.
09:43Shearer.
09:44Ince.
09:46Anderton right side.
09:47McManaman left side.
09:48Shearer clear.
09:50Score!
09:54Well, wouldn't you know it.
10:02When it mattered, he knew where the goal was.
10:0512 internationals without a goal.
10:08But the first competitive one.
10:10And he hit that as though he'd had no problem scoring for his country at all.
10:16This was Alan Shearer of Blackburn Rovers.
10:24Well, that's good build-up play.
10:26Struck it in from the near post.
10:28To me, Teddy Shearer and Alan Shearer are both in offside positions when the ball was played.
10:32But as it's a home advantage, I don't think we'll dispute it.
10:35But I don't think the Swiss will be that impressed.
10:38The hand went up in the defense for the decision.
10:41It wasn't given.
10:42And I think there were two players, not just one.
10:45Well, I certainly wouldn't give you any argument about that.
10:49But Alan Shearer certainly won't be complaining and neither will he.
10:52And neither will he.
11:07Lancy stuff and it worked well.
11:08Pierce.
11:09Shearer.
11:10And it was the nearest on the far post from Shearer.
11:11Curling cross by Stuart Pierce.
11:13And the attack started by the light foot touch by Gascoigne.
11:16Wasn't too far away at the end.
11:17Won't come down for either of them.
11:18Very untidy.
11:19And the free kick in the end is given against Stuart Pierce.
11:20And it was the nearest on the far post from Shearer.
11:22Curling cross by Stuart Pierce.
11:23And the attack started by the light foot touch by Gascoigne.
11:25Wasn't too far away at the end.
11:26Won't come down for either of them.
11:27Very untidy.
11:28And the free kick in the end is given against Stuart Pierce.
11:30Take a mads, got away.
11:36Oh, off the other side of the crossbar.
11:45Would you believe it!
12:0066 is still in the mind it was that crossbar
12:06but Jeff Hurst hit when the ball went in then it was hit in 1996 and the ball stayed out
12:22super long ball which is well defended by contact
12:30I suspect a yellow car
12:35not before time for contact he was penalized earlier in the harvest use of
12:40his forearm and though he's questioning Alan Shearer about him I think he was due to
12:45enter the book
12:47and here's Shearer and somehow blocked by Pescalo Shearer again couldn't think it out
12:59and offside anyway not given by the linesman but given by the referee
13:05which looking back on the goal that England scored may well tell a story
13:17Adam and shot
13:19well was he off the field of play then the Swiss player that suddenly came into appearance it
13:24looked as though the linesman could have been right and the referee wrong
13:27Teddy Shearingham picking up a lots of space at the far post very similar to the area that
13:32Tony Adams quite often finds for Arsenal a clear header but just from the angle
13:37certainly Pescalo doing well to block it with his feet
13:40second goal would have been quite timely just before the half-time whistle
13:43Gascoyne sharing it
13:49Gascoyne has lifted the match again that near thing Gascoyne again trying to get between two
13:55and Oshou concedes the corner
14:03Adams on the near post and a free header for Southgate
14:07up by Kota and the flag is up this time for offside against McManaman
14:13what a chance that was
14:22and at half-time because of Gracie's miss it might be said England maintained their lead
14:31given them by Alan Shearer ending his spell of being unable to score for his country in the 24th
14:39minute
14:401-0 to England
14:49first touch for Sforza in the second period
14:54Switzerland will want him to be more dominant
15:01Bayern Munich
15:01it's Gary Neville
15:07contact
15:12Bonvain
15:12surprise in the team and indeed a surprise in the squad
15:16Vega
15:20what a good shot from a long long way out
15:26being their most impressive player
15:32one club man with grasshopper
15:34really that was a good attempt well covered clearly but even so
15:50Gascoyne
15:52suspiciously goes to handball referee gave in the benefit of the doubt
15:55Shira shooting chance
15:59close again
16:04with greater luck
16:06might have had a hat-trick against this man
16:08well struck
16:13the goalkeeper was a little bit late going down wasn't he Pascola not sure he would have got there
16:19but that's it
16:31foul by Neville and at a cost to himself
16:35came in from the wrong side and clearly committed a foul and is clearly hurt
16:38and possible first replacement
16:44is Gary's brother Philip
16:47they've been replacing each other at international and club level
16:52for a moment England down to 10 men
16:54she's on sure
17:05Sforza
17:06every man behind the ball for England
17:10grassy he's got away grassy and still
17:14and Turkomat's looking for the fullback and he's been left completely unmarked if the ball have come through
17:19like England pressurizing the man on the ball look at the top of the picture as
17:25Pearce comes across if that had been pulled back there was absolutely no cover at all
17:29Pearce had to win it and did
17:37Switzerland 4-3 ahead on corners and Neville back on the pitch
17:42met by Adams the corner
17:43and they're not considered to be one of the better sides of the championship
18:11now these are nervous moments aren't they Fogel
18:15midfielder plenty to turkle mats a little tug from Paulins
18:19fortunately the shot straight at David Seaman
18:21but definitely nervous moments for the home side
18:27Teddy Shearingham is the player to be withdrawn
18:36his role now to be performed by Nick Bombay
18:39and it looks like Steve McManaman is the other man to go
18:49so Steve Stone becomes the second substitute
19:00Token mats did well but not well enough the ball in fact had just beaten him
19:17but an indication of his pace and chef Risa also has pace
19:21that's he probably not so much it's a slightly risky policy it has to be said
19:27feeling that the one goal will be enough at the three points
19:32promising for switzerland that's he just inside good long run by foeby
19:48plenty of noise from the swiss supporters
19:50and concern for the english
19:53fogel again look at his team by that shot on the turf
20:03but they're dictating the style of the play
20:10it's a question for england of battening down the hatches
20:16they didn't quite get over that shot it was little number 17 fogel that picked up
20:20two and three of the loose balls in midfield Paul Gascon beginning to look a bit tired
20:24the fogel was starting to run at him and get him in defensive situations
20:29still not convincing by the home side
20:32grazie
20:35holding up the lights on the board
20:51and it's Paul Gascon
20:54and it's Paul Gascon
20:55and it's Paul Gascon
20:56and he's being withdrawn
20:58and it's Paul Gascon
21:05and David Platt
21:06who replaces him
21:07and David Platt
21:08who replaces him
21:09and David Platt
21:10who replaces him
21:11after the ball
21:12and he's sitting on the ball
21:22the corner on the bench
21:24and it's a pretty good
21:25and it's a good
21:26it's a terrible
21:29And he certainly made his presence well.
21:36Countdown with him from Balmby's cross.
21:39And it's a goal kick.
21:41Good cross from Nick Balmby with his left foot.
21:44And he assumes Steve Stone has been penalised for a challenge.
21:47A little nudge in the back, but it seemed to come off quite hard.
21:51But at last England get him forward, they've got to do that,
21:54because otherwise it's going to be an anxious last 13 or 14 minutes
21:58hanging on to this lead.
22:02Fogel, fouled by Adams.
22:05Woof, right on the edge, he's going to get the yellow card.
22:10It's quite right.
22:11He was lucky to get away with the first challenge,
22:13and the second one was perilously close to being inside the box.
22:19Well, my heart missed a beat there.
22:20It is just outside, isn't it?
22:28Might be a second touch here on a change of angle.
22:33Also, Fogel is behind Kola.
22:37Disappointing one, but here's Fogel.
22:39Oh, close!
22:41Really has played well in this second half, is Johan Fogel.
22:53I thought this was in, I must say.
22:56First touch was very good, right through a crowd.
22:59It's in right up to that last minute,
23:00and I don't think David Seaman would have got there.
23:02And it curled away in England's favour.
23:05Swiss are going to go away from this,
23:14feeling that they were more than a little unlucky in this opening match.
23:20All the stories about disagreement in the camp,
23:24of the fact that they didn't like the new coach
23:26after the popularity of Roy Hodgson.
23:30They are giving England an almighty scare here.
23:33That's it, blocked by the hands of Pearce,
23:37and that was a penalty.
23:44It's going to be down to David Seaman to save the day.
23:49Well, it was a mess up, a bad header in the first place there.
23:52They've got Gareth in Southgate,
23:53and then the hand was up, wasn't it?
23:55It's going to be Terkelmars to take.
23:59And it's 1-1.
24:01Rolled it in with great applause.
24:08And disappointing though it is for the home crowd and for the England team,
24:12you have to say that Switzerland deserve to be all square.
24:16No chance for David Seaman.
24:22Beautifully disguised.
24:27Having said that the Swiss deserve to be level,
24:29that player in particular, Terkelmatt,
24:31who's always been dangerous,
24:33great movement along the back line of England,
24:36and in the end,
24:37he was there challenging.
24:38Look at this,
24:40the hands are up for Stuart Pearce,
24:42and it's 1-1.
24:49Out to Aniston,
24:50down to Ince.
24:54Punched away by Pascolo,
24:56which perhaps made it look rather better than it was.
24:58This one knocked out by Paul Ince.
25:05Come through a ruck of players.
25:06I think Pascolo was just waiting.
25:11Not sure he should be punching there, really.
25:12It's always a bit of a risk.
25:16Ince.
25:20Never.
25:21Into the last minute.
25:30Shekwizat.
25:31Trying to turn Adams.
25:34Oh!
25:35Good block.
25:36From Grazi on the air post by David Seaman.
25:39Good skill.
25:42By Shekwizat.
25:44Pulling back.
25:46And Grazi,
25:46first time,
25:47it was a good block down by his post by David Seaman.
25:52Otherwise,
25:52things would have been even worse for England.
25:56Switzerland's sixth quarter.
26:02And Seaman grabs it again.
26:05As Plattu lost Shekwizat on that occasion.
26:16And the European Championship opens with a draw.
26:21Goals in the 24th and 83rd minutes.
26:26And the Swiss are very delighted
26:27that Alan Shearer's opening goal for Wembley
26:31was nullified from the penalty spot
26:34by Terkelmaz from Switzerland.
26:37A disappointing start for England.
26:39But perhaps it should be remembered
26:41that 30 years ago,
26:42England also opened with only a draw
26:45against Uruguay.
26:47Final score
26:48is England 1-Switzerland.
26:51to be in peace of the day has been on the delay.
26:55To be continued...
26:56I will see that.
26:58That you can't wait for a minute.
26:59We never see that this to be considered
27:01as a match of the choice of Eurovision.
27:01And the one is just,
27:02as I don't think,
27:02for the reason,
27:04going for it.
27:04It's the end.
27:05For the other to be done,
27:06I will look for you for the stretch
27:07of the rest.
27:07You're going for the stretch.
27:08I will look for the stretch.
27:09of the stretch.
27:09So,
27:09what was the stretch?
27:10The Outsourcing
27:11that was in the place.
27:12go to the stretch.
27:12I mean for this to be the stretch.
