00:00our whole band was in the bus trying to remember what your name was we're like we're not using our
00:04phones we're like beat up we spent like a good hour on it eventually we got it
00:08rock metal frog and everything in between welcome to this episode of talk and rock with meltdown
00:16don't forget to follow the audio only talking rock podcast on all podcast platforms and now
00:21it's time for today's conversation here's meltdown how's your morning been it's been all right doing
00:28a lot of this uh press stuff but it really is um this is this is truly therapy for me and i haven't
00:35found the right therapist and i really desperately need one and so doing all of these like
00:39it's actually really good i gotta tell you a funny story about you yeah uh about you that you would
00:45never know happened there was a time when our whole band was in the bus trying to remember what your
00:51name was okay and it was a game that we played well by your name i mean meltdown yeah yeah and it was a
00:58game that we played we're like we're not using our phones what what what is his what is his radio
01:02name what is that guy's radio name and we're like we're like beat up uh slot we knew we knew it was
01:08something but we spent like a good hour on it eventually we got it and so okay i just thought
01:12i'd tell you that story is really funny and so now i'll never forget that you were a meltdown
01:16well thanks i thought maybe you were driving around the country somewhere and you heard me on your
01:19nearest radio but no not to me so just trying to remember your name hey so uh you know it's funny
01:26because you mentioned this is therapy but you know um i interview a lot of bands and there's not many
01:31bands i would say that write music in a therapeutic way like you guys do or at least you do this record
01:40is really therapeutic isn't it i hope so uh i hope so for the people who listen to it well i'm talking
01:49about for you to get stuff off of your chest uh honestly it wasn't as therapeutic as i would have
01:54liked it to be okay yeah i tried really hard i tried really really really hard for it to be
02:03therapeutic um and i had moments of it i had real big wins um you know obviously during pause there was
02:09a there was a there was some therapy happening there that was really good a song uh called what's
02:15the point that's on there there's a lot of crying uh and a emotional tension released during that one
02:21but um it was it was just more difficult for me than it than it has ever been now i think i read in
02:30in the bio that they sent me and this is funny because i was talking with geezer butler about this
02:35last year from black sabbath you know those guys came from very poor humble beginnings they write their
02:40first couple of records from that point of view and then after a while it's like well what do you write
02:44about now and i think you kind of touched on it uh a little bit in some of the writing in this album
02:50didn't you definitely yeah yeah but i mean yeah just just being uh being successful quote unquote
02:59right um it's kind of this like what now feeling like now what do i do am i done like what do i do
03:07are we just maintaining this thing are we are we going to keep growing do i have it in me
03:12to keep pushing and growing because i knew the amount of effort it took to get to this point
03:17um it's weird there's just never a point and i think this applies to any job
03:22uh whether it's a creative field or not probably more so in the creative fields like
03:29actors musicians whatever um but there's never a point where you're like oh i've made it and now
03:35i can just chill it just doesn't exist and you worked again with uh well i shouldn't say again
03:41have you worked with nick rascalens before no just just this time so why i mean nick obviously has a
03:47great track record with rock bands and stuff was it just uh as he was he local and that was easier
03:53did you guys want to work with him or how'd that come about well we wanted to work with somebody
03:56because i have produced everything myself well i produced the last album myself and i did that's
04:01typically my role but i was in a position where i just couldn't handle it i felt like i was too much
04:07pressure and i you know i just didn't have the confidence in myself so we brought nick in um to
04:12help jump start that and then towards the end of it i i kind of took it back and i was like oh
04:16thank you nick for the help i'm gonna i'm gonna do this my way again um but yeah but he was i don't
04:23know i i think um actually i think the story was his i think his wife and kids saw us open for
04:29incubus and then they told him like you've got to work with this bathwater band and so it just
04:32kind of worked out that's pretty cool so what was the experience like with him it was good awesome
04:38guy real easy to work with real fun and uh it's good to see uh that you're that the song detroit's
04:44finally on a record because that's been on for quite a while now that's right yeah and that are you guys
04:50still playing it are you still uh good yeah and uh you know and you mentioned pause we play that
04:57periodically and i have to admit it gives me a lump in my throat but uh uh someone once mentioned
05:01to me that uh life is just a series of dogs like every dog that you have is like your is like the
05:09next phase of life yeah you know the last time i had to put a dog down was four years ago and i
05:15didn't i thought it was you know i'm actually almost to the day june 18th and um i thought i was
05:20gonna be okay i took the day off from work and i rode my motorcycle halfway to chicago and back
05:24yeah i don't think i'll do another one for a very long time yeah i just don't think i can
05:31yeah did you ever hear uh maggie's song from chris stapleton no oh yeah that's another one that gets
05:40you because it's about his dog maggie but yeah oh wow i didn't know someone else wrote a song about a
05:45dog named maggie yeah yeah i used to watch it run around and now it's you know crossing the rainbow
05:51i mean it's like it's it's so moving it's like one of those songs yeah it's it's a country song
05:56you know how these countries you know that my my dog's name was maggie i did not yeah now wait a
06:02second when this bio said that the dog was is is a dog still alive or no probably at the time of the
06:08bio writing she's not now yeah dogs are the best though i mean i'm a huge dog guy it's like you know
06:15uh i i just i just want not not even not even thinking about it i walked my dog today three
06:20miles nice yeah that's what you gotta do so tell me about the uh the rest of the record which by the
06:25way no place like home comes out on this friday as we record this uh snuff is out i got a big tour
06:31coming up as well but what about the the rest of the album what other kind of stuff are you writing
06:34about i mean all kinds of these themes of uh lack of motivation and self-worth i think there's some
06:45of that stuff in there um there's also just very interesting little story like snippets of stories
06:53there's a song called don't be a stranger which i think is really interesting um you know i like to uh
07:00i like to tell stories and we have some stories in there uh one of the things that caught my
07:06attention was a swinging hammer and um we've talked about this before but where you live outside of
07:12nashville on a farm yes how many acres you got 21 21 are you do you have any other animals out there
07:20right now i have too many cats and horses and horses how many horses do you have
07:25i honestly don't know there's a uh we have a family who are now friends basically who board
07:34their horses um and most of them are like retired movie horses and i honestly don't know how many
07:41they have here right now yeah but it's it's somewhere between eight and ten have you have
07:47you always been like a country kid no i'm from la yeah that's what i thought so how does this come
07:53about i was just impulsively during covid i was like i want to do something different oh okay yeah
07:59yeah because i kind of grew up in the sticks and i live in the sticks by choice were you driving to
08:05detroit to do this yeah how far away are you 28 miles how far away are you from like uh from nashville
08:13i'm an hour drive okay which which side i was i was in hendersonville and whites creek and stuff last
08:19time i was out there i'm south of nashville so just deep deep in tennessee okay yeah i was in
08:24franklin with uh jared weeks also from uh you know you know jared from same and able i don't know who
08:30that is okay yeah he lives down in franklin as well but uh yeah you got detroit on here you got a
08:35snuff like we just talked about uh london haunting you uh no place like home so why did you guys pick
08:41this as the uh as the i guess the the title track and in the first song on the record
08:45i just felt right yeah this just felt good the song uh it's it's there's no other song on this
08:55album like that one but for some reason to me it feels like it sets the mood it feels like it sets
09:02the mood for the time period we're in and then the rest of it is like my feelings is is there always
09:09like a song that kind of comes to the top when you're writing an album full of 10 or 12 tracks
09:13no honestly the album to me is it's just a collection of songs yeah there isn't some big um
09:22concept the only concept is this is what my brain was doing when i was writing the songs for this time
09:29period like that's it um which ends up being you know conceptual in a way but it's not you know it's
09:38not dark side of the moon so you got 311 this summer then a three three day uh three three days
09:45grace almost three doors down three days grace coming up in the fall and uh europe uh you gotta
09:50be chomping at the bit to play some of these songs live right yeah some of them yeah some of them i'm
09:56really we're really excited about yes how many you think you're gonna sneak in well the original
10:02idea for the 311 tour was to rotate the set list around so to do like different things it's weird
10:08like releasing an album and not headlining but it's just kind of the way it worked out where
10:12we release an album and we're supporting so we can't do the big uh album release tour yet so i think we
10:20might just yeah play with them well no place like home drops uh this coming uh friday and uh good
10:27luck with everything josh and in a one are you gonna get another dog anytime soon no no just
10:33just the cats just the cats got you i have 10 cats here right now that's funny all right brother
10:44well listen uh best of luck to you and the rest of the guys in the band with the new record and the
10:48tour and all that stuff and we'll see you next time you're here in detroit sounds good thank you
10:57you
