Spurs’ stance after becoming Europa League winners as they have momentum ahead of summer

We asked James Trembath of LondonWorld to reflect on Tottenham’s Europa League triumph—and what it means for the club’s next chapter.

00:09To end a trophy drought was incredible with a statement win and mixing young stars and potential experienced.

00:16Now with European success finally secured, the club's challenge shifts.

00:20How can Spurs build on this momentum?

00:22A summer of smart recruitment combined with a clearer identity under the new manager

00:28could be the catalyst for sustained progress both domestically and abroad.

00:33We asked James Schoenbath of London World to reflect on Tottenham's Europa League triumph

00:38and what it means for the club's next chapter.

00:44So James, Tottenham Hotspur, Europa League winners obviously since we last caught up

00:49they have claimed that trophy in what proves to be Ange Postacoglu's final moments

00:54as Spurs' boss and obviously on a personal level for him he goes out on a bit of a high

00:59in terms of what was a terrible season domestically.

01:01But they got the job done in Europe, it was a bit of a lacklustre final by both sides really

01:06but how important it was for Spurs on the night to get it done.

01:10What was your take on the game? How it went?

01:12And then where it leaves Spurs now that can say they've had some success in Europe finally.

01:19Yeah, well I mean firstly what a night, what an absolutely unbelievable, unbelievable night.

01:25I was there at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with 40,000 other fans celebrating, watching the big screens.

01:31It was truly amazing to be honest with you. Big outpouring of emotion, of relief at the end of the game.

01:40I mean I sort of watched the last ten minutes from inside my jacket, I didn't look at the TVs,

01:44it was certainly nerve-wracking but we got the job done.

01:48I mean it's all about the result, the performance was robust.

01:51I think we had a game plan, very, very sort of European in terms of the way we've been playing.

01:56You know, we set up really, really tough to beat.

01:58We were bang at it, the football wasn't very good, you know, it was a very, very poor final.

02:05But we got that first goal, we got in front and then we kept Manchester United largely at bay.

02:10I mean, you know, they had one or two openings, van der Ven with an unbelievable clearance off the line

02:15and then a Luke Shaw header at the end, which was a terrific save from Vicario.

02:19But, you know, overall we did the job and that was what it was all about.

02:23We got that sort of monkey off our back.

02:25We've broken the Spursy tag, first trophy in 17 years, you know, first European trophy for 41 years.

02:31And, you know, what it meant to the fan base, you could see, you know, at the parade the following day,

02:36or the day after, sorry, you know, 220,000 people just shows, you know, what a big club Spurs is

02:42and what it absolutely meant to every single one of us.

02:45So, yeah, fantastic. It's memories that will live with me forever.

02:48And, you know, what an unbelievable achievement to win a European trophy.

02:53Yeah, there's a lot of sort of characters throughout the Spurs group, whether that is Posse Coglu,

02:58you know, Brennan Johnson as well, even James Madison, who got his moment with the trophy on the pitch.

03:03Yet in spite of sort of John Terry going back and forth on social media with trophies,

03:08you can't really argue with Terry's collection.

03:11But just a massive, as you say, monkey off their shoulders.

03:15How has it sort of changed the future? How has it changed the expectations of Spurs now?

03:20They're, you know, back in the Champions League.

03:22They obviously can't go and defend the Europa League now with the way it works.

03:26They don't drop into that if the Champions League doesn't go to plan.

03:29But they certainly don't want this trophy cabinet to, again, lie dormant for as many years as it did, you know, before.

03:37Well, I think it gives us a platform now. You know, I mean, the league form was horrendous.

03:41You know, a lot of context around that. We'll come on to that, I'm sure.

03:44But, you know, that's given us a platform now to build. We're back in the Champions League.

03:49And we've got the option now and hopefully the sort of momentum to kick on, really.

03:55And I think it was really interesting. So, you know, the parade with all the interviews and the sort of fan colour and the coverage, etc.

04:02But the one interview that stuck with me was Ryan Mason.

04:05Obviously, he's now departed for West Brom, but he was talking about how superior Spurs felt in that final.

04:11They were ready. They were prepared mentally. You know, they were bang up for it.

04:15And, you know, that sort of really rang true. And that's got to be the mentality now that we kick on with.

04:20You know, we've got the trophy in the bag. As I said, monkey off the back. The Spurs tag's been broken.

04:25It's now about what we do next. And, you know, we've got the momentum. We can continue to build.

04:30We need some win now players in the transfer window, which is going to be huge for Thomas Frank going forward.

04:36And we need to go and have a really good run in the Champions League.

04:38And, you know, you could say, well, to Spurs fans, we're sort of backed in Europe and that's where we belong.
