00:00The British people rightly expect us to have control of who comes into our country.
00:05The party opposite said that they would take back control. Well, Mr Speaker, they lost control.
00:15With one failed policy after another, no control, no security.
00:22In contrast, in the budget last year, I announced £150 million to establish the new border security
00:29command. And today, to support the integrity of our borders, I can announce that that funding will
00:36increase with up to £280 million more per year by the end of the spending review for our new border
00:44security command. Alongside that, we are tackling the asylum backlog. The party opposite left behind
00:53a broken system. Billions of pounds of taxpayers' money spent on housing asylum seekers in hotels,
01:01leaving people in limbo and shunting the cost of failure onto local communities. We won't let
01:07that stand. So I can confirm today that, led by the work of my right honourable friend, the Home
01:14Secretary, we will be ending the costly use of hotels to house asylum seekers in this Parliament.
01:23Funding that I have provided today, including from the Transformation Fund, will cut the asylum
01:29backlog, hear more appeal cases and return people who have no right to be here. Saving the taxpayer a
01:37billion pounds a year.
